Thank you so much! Amazing explanation on Snapshots! Really appreciate it. Seeing it walked through like this makes it much more understandable than trying to decipher the manual. I got my Helix yesterday to replace my HD500 and I am amazed and a bit overwhelmed with the magnitude of improvements. This thing is built like a tank and can't wait to hear what it sounds like on Sunday through the big PA. Thanks Again!
Thanks, I have been looking around at some of the IRs out there. Both free ones and the pay ones. The 3 sigma ones sound I am listening to sound wonderful. How do they compare with the Ohnhammer ones? The 3 Sigma ones seem to be a bit more pocket friendly as for $30 can get pretty much all the cabinets I would want. Still trying to wrap my heads around the IRs. I understand what they do and their purpose. But the whole wav files and the full tonal expression going through to make the wav file to produce the behavior of a cabinet is a bit over my head. LoL. Can anyone make their own IRs as well? Though $30 bucks seems to be worth it, if they sound that much better than the stock or the Assure ones that Line6 released for free. Seems like Line6 should have included a bit more in that department. Thanks for the info, will definitely check them out.
Just bought both the Vintage and HiGain Essential pack. So mainly it is just 1 cabinet for each with different mic placements? One thing I noticed with the presets included with the packs that they don't store or maintain the IR that was originally used with it. I have to go in and set it to the appropriate IR. Man, they make such a difference than the standard cabinet. Still not sure why they are needed at all and why Line6 or any other maker for that matter make them sound like they do with the IR in the first place. One question with your Global settings for the snapshots. The Discard setting. That is to ensure any edits that are made while you are using a particular snapshot aren't saved? The manual kind of hints at that, but not sure why anyone would want that to be saved anyway. Wife is not going to be seeing me too much for the next few days. Soo much to mess with. ;)
BTW, I have the same JTV59 as you have hanging on the wall. Love that thing. My Les Paul is jealous since I use the Variax most Sundays. So nice to have such a versatile guitar for Sunday, and when they throw a curve ball on a last minute key change I can simply turn a knob and play it the same.
Another question. Why are the IRs all set to -18db by default? WOuldn't it make more sense to be 0.0? I notice when I switch to an IR I can barely hear things.
You've shown how to assign settings to pre existing snapshots but how do you create the slots in the first place. The mode button toggles between stomp mode and scene mode but I can't see anywhere how you actually create a patch and then assign snapshots to pedals within the scene/patch?
You just need to hit Edit, then Global Settings, then Footswitches...now, you choose a mode that has Snapshots in it. I prefer 8 Snapshots mode. Rock on, Scott.
Angel Martinez IR’s need to be purchased separately. Unless you want my custom IR, which I use for everything. Email me and I’ll send it to you: TheHelixChannel@gmail.com
I 've noticed a couple of constants in your programming style. LA comp, and pitch shifters single and dual for slight detuning. Do you think is always necessary cut bass and especially highs freq in IRs? What about digital fizziness in Helix?
Yep, there are certain sounds I really like, the LA studio comp is one, the pitch shifter is another. I do find it necessary to cut highs and lows in the IR's. Cutting highs removes fizziness. I also leave my global EQ on, it cuts highs around 2k, and lows around 100hz.
I rarely use fuzzes, but, for my 90's Grunge presets I made a few presets that used a fuzz in conjunction with a Marshall JCM800...by bringing the drive down on both the amp and the fuzz I was able to get a few really cool tones! One was for a Bush tune, another for an L7 song. Rock on, Scott.
hey I found your channel while looking up instructional videos for the Helix cuz I just got my mine I like your channel and I like your humor. anyhow working on setting up snapshots but once I'm in snapshot mode the camera icon does not appear on any of the foot switches I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong... any suggestions?
where did you get the IR that you are using on the preset? I would like to get the exact same one for a test. I know everyone loves IRs but when I put them in my Helix they sound really thin and brittle. I would like to build this exact preset and see if mine sounds like yours or if my Helix has a problem. The reason I think my Helix has an issue is because when I was listening to this video through my Helix via USB it was all distorted.
that was weird, on my laptop the site did not work, when on a different computer, it worked fine and I found them. thanks for all the help, awesome information your providing
Quick question if anybody can help. I just got the Helix and I'm wondering, to create a new preset, do I have to overwrite a pre- existing preset to create a new one? Say for example.. the first preset on my Helix is '01A US Double Norm'.. Would I overwrite '01A US Double Norm' to create a new preset? I can't seem to find a section where there is a blank preset section (if there is one) Any help would be appreciated.
No, just knob by the Menu button (the three lines) and you'll see the factory presets and the User folders, pick the User 3a or whatever one you want and you're off to the races!!! Rock on, Scott.
Sure can! All you need to do is touch the switch that you want to copy for about 2 seconds, then quickly touch the destination switch, then, follow the prompt. Rock on, Scott.
No fizz , I enjoyed your video for this reason because the tone was pure you made and not a fizzy mess thru earphones
I'll go as most of the cliche comments: I got my Helix today! This video is a gem! Thanks!
Psychosis 51 Thanks for watching my videos!
I’m happy to help.
Rock on,
Scott

One tip, try some 3 Sigma Audio IR’s, they really help the Helix to sound and feel more like a real amp.

Scott's Digital Guitar Playground thanks Scott! Amazing that such a key feature is not even mentioned in the manual as such an awsome feature
I move the "cursor" as far to the left as you can on the top path, to the little guitar icon, that's where the gate lives.
Rock on,
Scott.
pro tip : you can watch movies on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Ryan Winston yup, I have been watching on flixzone for since november myself :D
@Ryan Winston Definitely, been using Flixzone for since november myself :)
@Ryan Winston yup, have been using flixzone for years myself :)
I wanna take an existing preset and alter it to make snap shots and I'm stuck
At 5:12 where did you get that beautiful clean sound?
Angel Martinez Not sure, there’s no guitar playing until 7:40
Hi where did you get the IRs from? I can't find any in my HELIX
Angel Martinez IR’s need to be purchased separately. Unless you want my custom IR, which I use for everything. Email me and I’ll send it to you: TheHelixChannel@gmail.com

I'd like to know you opnion about Fuzzes in Helix, I found them untweakable.
If you know a way to make them sound better...

Mario You're a jackass, and I totally agree with you. So I guess that make me a jackass too!

Sorry this took me so long...what mode are you in? When you go into the Global Settings, in the Footswitches menu, what are your settings?
The Helix Channel thanks I've since figured it out. I just hadn't touched the mode button... duh lol dig the channel, keep it up

It's a Hi Watt 4x12 from 3 Sigma Audio...the 1a IR. If you didn't have an IR in there, it'll sound very bad.
Rock on,
Scott.
thanks, I searched 3 Sigma, and I did not see that cab IR, is it actually a Redwire IR?
It's on page two of the 4x12's:
www.3sigmaaudio.com/items/category/4x12/page/2/

Can you copy Snapshot 1 to Snapshot 5?
Sure can! All you need to do is touch the switch that you want to copy for about 2 seconds, then quickly touch the destination switch, then, follow the prompt.
Rock on,

Where can I get some IR's?
ML-Sound Lab, Ownhammer, Dr.Bonkers, York Audio, 3 Sigma Audio and Seacow are great places to get Impulse Responses :)
How do I get my snapshot icon red. Mines white
Press the far left wheel, then press "rename snapshot", then from there you can adjust the color.
Rock on,
Scott.
The Helix Channel no. He means the actual Icon (📷) I was wondering the same thing. what is the Icon next to it, Variax?
The Helix Channel I love your show. You're funny. Thanks for sharing.
This is NOT from scratch. Automatically you assumed I knew something about this Which I dont.
I love your videos but the audio when you talk is really low compared to the guitar volume.
