  • Over the past few months I've had various questions about my B&O's.... So here is a video :-)
    Please check out the playlist with all my CRT and B&O vids!
    • Bang & olufsen CRT Videos
    These are the geometry settings I used (these will be tweaked in the future but make a good base setting. You will probably find that they will want altering on your set as well)
    I must stress to write down all of your original settings before any adjustments are made, it's easy to get lost!
    These are the settings I used in the video:
    Brilliance 32 colour 52 contrast 61 tint 32
    Rdr 36
    Gdr 39
    Rcu 33
    Gcu 15

    Great advice! Nice one. I have an MX7000 with software version 2.0 so I need to jump two prongs inside the tv after taking the back off to access the service menu and it won't allow me to view anything but TV mode while in service menu. It's extremely annoying. People should be aware that there is a Horizontal Position Potentiometer on the back-end of the Yoke assembly so if your HPH - Horizontal position setting in the service menu isn't helping enough then that can be played with. Unfortunately my AV signal goes bad after 10 minutes of being powered on and starts to flicker badly. I think this is down to capacitors so that's gonna be a pain in the arse to fix.

    Great video mate, good to know depth etc for future purchasing! Interesting you mentioned about the smaller set being your preferred choice; I had both a 29" and a 20" (poss 21) Trinitron and the picture was better on the smaller set and I preferred to play on that as it seemed to have a sharper image (using RGB SCART).

    • @GRUSSNewton
      @GRUSSNewton  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Darren I imagine it's down to pixel size which makes the picture look more or less sharper... Or I could be making it up.!
      I've had 2x both of these sets and I still prefer the 4000. I imagine if you just had the larger 7000 then you'd never know.
      Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

    very cool!! so jealous, due to the tiny hatch into my mancave/loft the only CRT I have up there is a tiny Phillips video monitor (plugged into my A1200)
    Would love a nice B&O or Trinitron up there for the ultimate retro experience :)

    • @GRUSSNewton
      @GRUSSNewton  7 лет назад

      That's a shame Chris, must be a tiny hatch. The B&O 4000 as you've seen it's fairly slim in comparison to other tvs

    • @Wobble2007
      @Wobble2007 Год назад

      @@GRUSSNewton They are different tube types that both have different looks, Sony use aperture grill while B&O use shadow mask, Sony sets are better for higher fidelity 3D games and watching SD video content (especially animation), B&O are amazing for 8 & 16-Bit 240p, perfect for NES/SNES/SMD/etc, Sony is superb for DC/PS2/GC/XB/etc, I'd also say AG tubes are better all-rounders, whereas B&O/Panasonic/Thomson/Toshiba/JVC (these all have a similar curvy style tube) curved shadow masks are best for 240p arcade/retro content with nice prominent scanlines, they are not too soft and not to sharp just right imo for playing 8/16-Bit console and arcade games.
      Of course either CRT type, if it's a good set it will look good regardless, the above is just how I prefer to display games/content, then there is also SD 16:9 aspect, the same rule generally applies there, curvy widescreen shadow mask CRTs for some games/content (some SD 16:9 DVD's look best on these sets) and flat-screen AG widescreens for higher fidelity/resolution games/video, for instance Laserdisc looks awsome on a 32" flat-screen Sony Trinitron, and if you have room you can even have a decent progressive scan widescreen CRT, Sony and Panasonic are the only decent ones for the most part, I'm sure there are some exceptions though.

    This is what i found out about the settings so far. The color settings are superb :). But why did you change the Horizontal frequency? Isn't this a standard by the manufacture? I'm not an expert :P so sorry for the stupid question.
    RDR = Red Drive
    GDR = Green Drive
    RCU = Red cut-off balance
    GCU = Green cut-off balance
    BRI = Brillance preset
    COL = Colour preset
    HFQ = Horizontal freq
    HPH = Horizontal position
    HAM = Horizontal amplitude (width size)
    VAM = Vertical amplitude (height size)
    VSC = Vertical s-correction
    VSH = Vertical position
    VLI = Vertical linearity

    Great video Russ! I'm assuming you know that on the MX4000 you need to go to sound menu and select speakers 1 (3 is the default for some reason). And you get much better bass and overall sound. On the MX7000 it makes no difference.

      I'm on regular TV, then press menu, then sound, all I get is balance / volume and then on the next page Bass /Treble / Loudness.
      Can you point me the right way?

    • @Lennart942
      @Lennart942 Год назад

      You need to turn that of in the menü. The 1-2-3 is only relevant if you got two active speakers hooked up ( meaning 1 only the Tv is playing - 2 only the two speakers playing and 3 - all of them ) You can turn that off so you dont have to change it. And the Tv will play with full bass.

I've used your settings for vam and ham and I see your genesis covers up the whole screen as mine doesn't. I even built a Scart cable where pin 8 is disabled so the TV can't start in 16:9 either. Wonder if you have any suggestions what the issue might be? Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the software information. Many MX series being sold on Ebay with SW version lower than 4.0. So is that a setting at the time of manufacture and cannot be upgraded by end user? Also would you say that the Beovision MX series is best B&F for retro gaming being CRT and 60Hz (for light gun games). Or is there another B&F that is superior to MX for old school games.

    • @GRUSSNewton
      @GRUSSNewton  6 лет назад +2

      SaminPK I don’t thing the S.W version can be changed, I’ve had a couple of earlier versions and there was a slight difference in picture quality, but the main thing is the access to the service mode via the remote.
      Personally I love the smaller MX4000 for retro gaming although the set isn’t fantastic for light gun games due to the contrast screen on the front.
      I use my PVM for that (I have a video) but for style and space the 4000 wins in my book.
      If the 4.0 on eBay has the remote and is cheap enough, it’s probably worth picking up.
      Hope that helps and thanks for the sub :-)

    I have an issue with my mx7000, and I'm hoping someone can help me with it. I've bought an RGB SCART cable to go with my SNES to improve its visuals on the tv (even though it's pretty darn awesome as it is only using component), but when plugging it in using AV1 and the V-Tape "mode" the image comes out really dark. The sound comes out fine but the image is pitch black. However, when accessing the menu i on V-tape mode, the image pops back in view until you exit the menu, and it again turns completely black. I've seen others having the same issue and asking the same question online, but I've failed to find an answer to the problem. Does anybody know what causes this, and is there a remedy for it?

      Hmm have you got another console you can try? PAL scart lead on a PAL machine?

      Actually, I just solved the problem, and it was just me being ignorant. I'm from Sweden, so I'm running a PAL system and I bought the cable on an online auction site where the seller said that it was a PAL RGB cable. However, when I picked up another B&O set from a retro gamer, I asked him about it. He said that the issue was that the cable was an NTSC cable, and then proceeded to sell me an actual PAL cable, and it worked great. So it all came down to me not realizing it was an NTSC cable. The thing I couldn't understand was why I managed to get a picture when pressing the menu button on the remote. As it turns out, when doing so in V-Tape mode, the TV automatically switches to composite mode rather then RGB and you get a picture. So there we have it. Thanks for the answer though :)

      I think the dark picture is due to some extra resistors in the cable. I had the same issue but after i removed those the picture was perfect.

      +Caladas could you explain so i could understand? i use PS1 on MX6000. And Aldo have the dark color/nice color when pressing menu.

      The thing with SNES RGB cables is that they differ between PAL (Europe/Australia) and NTSC (North America/Japan) regions. The difference being that the PAL systems does not require resistors in the RGB scart cable, where the NTSC systems do. That means that (as I did) if you use a PAL system with an NTSC cable with resistors in it, the picture will not get through the resistors in the cable, and you will get no picture. Unless you press the menu-button, then the signal will change to a traditional composite signal, and the image will get through. I am not an expert on this though, nor on PS1's, but I recall there are differences in signals between PAL and NTSC regioins there aswell. I suggest you check out the "My Life In Gaming" channel here on youtube, and watch their episode on PS1 (ruclips.net/video/f7fCTHu99bk/видео.html), there they talk a bot about RGB options for the PS1. Also I suggest you buy a good cable from "Retro-gaming cables" (www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/) and make sure it's for the correct region for you PAL/NTSC. And as a last thing if you run a NTSC console, make sure the TV supports 60Hz, or I fear it will not be able to display unmodified NTSC signals.
      Hope that helps :)

    Hi. I got an MX7000 as a birthday present, and I love it. I just have a few difficulties with it. I can't find the "SOUND" cue to add to the list when accessing "ADD?", and, because of that, I can only play in Mono. I also read from someone that they can access "SOUND", but mono remains mono (I also tried tuning it, but, it doesn't change it).
    My other issue is that when I plug in my ps2 through scart, the image is less bright than my android tv box for example, which I have hooked up through a converter to SCART.

      Yardley I wouldn’t be sure if you could gain access to the service menu through the remote with that software version.
      You probably could access it manually by removing the back and fitting a switch across the service pins but it’s just a bit of a pain.

    • @elbitxo5945

      it really depends were you live and how fast you want to sell it. If you live in a big city there will be many people hunting that model, but it's a niche market, not so many potential buyers in a small village. They are more common in Britain and Northern Europe too, so they go cheaper. I'm trying to get one (or Beovision1/MX8000) in Madrid, and I have seen sales of that model from 50€ to 200€ during the last year, usually over 100€ at second hand apps, but looks like they don't sell nearly as fast over 120€.

    Thank you for the review. I just got my hands on MS6000 (not MX). Its sadly SW 1.2 . Whats even worst i cant access TV menu. Picture has slight black bar on right side of the screen trough RGB on my PS1. While Megadrive (Genesis) has both bars on right side and bottom (testing with PAL games on PAL console). I never encountered this problem back in 90s when i tried these consoles on multiple CRTs. They always fit the screen with no overscan. If i adjust the screen for PS1 it wont be enough of an adjustment for Megadrive. Almost as if it is wrong aspect ratio. Any help would be appreciate it.
