  • Most retro gamers own CRTs, but which consoles should you play on them? In particular, what about those 6th generation consoles (Xbox, GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast) and even the Wii? I cover the information you'll need to decide which consoles play best on a CRT TV and which consoles play best on something different.

It was always simple for me: Gen1-6 on 4:3 CRTs, Gen7-9 on 16:9 non-CRTs. Yes, some Gen6 games support EDTV, but the vast majority of people played them on SD-CRTs during the first half of the '00s. This fact, combined with the massive leap in online accommodations from gen6 to gen7, leads me to consider Gen1-6 truly retro and Gen7-9 truly modern. Radically different eras of gaming.

    • @mr.jamster8414
      @mr.jamster8414 Год назад +14

I see it as four groups:
1-2: "dawn era" the kind of games they have pre-booted into hospital screens or as Easter eggs in certain apps.
3-4 "2d era" classic arcade style and adventure games from this era. When games first got actually fun and interesting.
5-7 "3d era" 3d games with a lot of depth and creativity, especially around 2004-2012 with so much unique things coming out like Spiderman 2, Skate, and Minecraft. (Yup)
8-9 "corporate era" when games got stale and loot boxes became a thing.
GRAPHICS-wise, though, it really depends... Zero Tolerance and Beneath A Steel Sky are two games from the same year, one of them looks like dogshit on anything *but* a CRT, and the other is hand-drawn backgrounds that look good on anything.

Hooking it up to an HDtv made the image so fuzzy that it was practically impossible to make out any in-game object that weren’t right in front of the player, now with the CRT it all looks crisp and clean (and old and pixelated, just the way I like it haha)

My go to explanation for why CRTs are better is the pipe in Mario. A CRT blurs the chekerboard pattern of light and dark greens into a third shade of green, creating a gradation effect that makes the pipe look round. That's why it was designed with that checkerboard effect. On an HD display, it doesn't make any sense. It's like watching a 3D movie without the glasses; it will look awful because the image was not created with the expectation that anybody would be watching it without the glasses.

Man my parents hoard everything even as far as old used calendars. My old Panasonic 50cm flat screen 480p CRT lived under their house buried behind and under a pile of junk for over 10 years. A couple years ago I decided it was time to get it and make some space at my place. The pile of junk was still there, the TV was not. For whatever reason they were compelled to sift through old bits of foam mattress cutoffs, broken laundry baskets, punctured bike tyre tubes and the like, take out the mint TV, place it on the curb and put all the literal landfill back where it was. Absolutely baffled by that logic but oh well.

I have a huge 35” CRT that I got for free from local Craigslist. I keep it in the bedroom corner sandwiched between to my 55” HDTV and my 20” monitor that I use for my Dreamcast. I use my CRT for my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, GameCube, N64, PS1, PS2, PS2(pal), OG Xbox, and the Wii. My HDTV for my 360, and Xbox one. Using two switcher boxes, I have all hooked up ready to go and just swap out the wires for my Dreamcast light gun games. In our living room on the 65”4K, I have another 360, PS3, Xbox1X, Switch, Wii U, and PS4 pro with PSVR. It’s pretty sweet!!

For Gen 6 consoles I find a plasma or a 720p LCD to be a great solution as they handle 480p pretty well and these consoles do support 720p widescreen in some cases so it's a catch all. The other excellent option for 5th 6th and even 7th gen consoles is a nice DLP projector. They upscale amazingly well - even the 4K models.

CRT televisions capable of progressive scan are hard to find, and some of them have digital processing that adds lag, so a reliable way of doing 480p on a CRT is using a computer monitor!
The only problem is how to connect a console to one. If you can get HDMI out of your old console you can then use a hdmi-to-vga adapter (with separate audio out in the adapter). In other cases you could use something like an OSSC or RetroTINK 2X Pro Multiformat scaler to input 480p to the scaler via the console's default component cables and output HDMI and then use the aforementioned HDMI-to-VGA adapter.
Of course a computer monitor isn't natively 480p, but it should look much better that playing on a flat panel.

I generally use my crt for my PS2 and 64. Mostly because with games like Tony Hawk and fighting games that require precision inputs, the crt doesn't give you lag like say plugging it into a HD TV would.
Plus component cables really give the PS2 a much clearer, deeper and sharper image than the standard composite cables I used for years.
The only issue I have with the crt is where to put it when reorganising the room
