Thanks for this video. I have looked at 25 pictures and at least 10 videos, but you are the first to show where the linkage hooked on the back side. Thanks again
Sir, i want to thank you for this video. Like you my son acquired a mower with a kawasaki fh721v engine that was partially disassembled. The throttle rod and choke rod were missing as well as the 2 springs. Your video was instrumental in getting this engine back running, and i just wanted to say thank you. One of my main problems was I had the fuel solenoid facing the engine which was in the way of the choke rod. When i saw your video i noticed it facing the rear! Great Video!!
I know this is an older video, but it sure helped me today. Thank you so much for the detailed info on the spring locations and the backwards governor setting.
You sir are an absolute life saver! Thank you so much for showing that because those diagrams are absolutely not helpful in the service manual for where that governor spring attaches to the plate, and my engine had a bent up piece of coat hanger wire for a choke arm that wasn’t working properly from someone else’s repairs and this made installing the new Kawasaki part stupid easy. My engine blew a head gasket and I was told to buy a new ZT mower and quoted over $1200 for repair and it was less than $50 in parts to replace both head gaskets; adjust all the valves and rebuild it myself in a few hours time. Just a little mechanical know how and a few hours of work. Thank you again for giving me the final piece to getting it back together. Even with photos I took during disassembly I was having issues with being confident where the springs went back behind that plate.
Thanks for this video! I have 2004 GT235 with the Kawasaki motor and was not sure how the back of this control plate looked, was missing info, and your right TM manual does not show clear picture of back. This answered questions for me. Nice job on this and the rebuild tips video as well.
Thanks, my mower was suffering from low skilled repairs. This was very helpful in getting it back to original shape. I will say it is also helpful to see how to set the RPMs with PTO engaged. I have figured that out by other videos.
thank you for the video, while i was pulling the whole piece the governor spring came off and i was unsure where to attach but thank you to this video i figure it out.
Thanks! As you mentioned I could not find a good picture on how to setup and which way to turn the governor. Bent taking apart to replace crank case seal. This is very helpfull.
Even though this particular Kawasaki engine is not set up exactly like my engine, I was able to get the gist of what you were saying , So I took your advice and applied it to my engine and it worked. Thank you
Have an FH641V in a 48” Ferris ZTR that developed a governor shaft seal leak. It finally started leaking pretty bad making for a mess so I needed to repair It which I did. The only problem was: where did the choke lever go and how to reset the governor on the thing? This video did the trick, and I had it back in service quickly. A big THANK YOU for this video!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you! This engine has been driving me nuts for hours now. I replaced the governor shaft seal and could not figure out why it was over revving on me. Kept thinking i had the linkage wrong. I had it on full throttle when setting the governor but i needed to hold the linkage at full throttle while setting it. Thanks again
Great video. My governor linkage fell off the control plate before I got a chance to see where it hooked up. This was the 1st video to show where it went.
Great Video, I have been fooling with this problem of not getting full RPM, saw that I didn't have enough pull on the governor spring; had not noticed the slotted plate but now i see my problem and will try raising it up and see if that takes care of it. Thanks for such a great gift!!!
Gonna do the same as the others...THANK U very much! My choke spring and lever came off, was not sure where the spring went...lucky your picture showed that! Hat's off! Nice of U to help others!
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know! And since I’m mowing at about 75% power, I’ll try the governor adjustment you mention at about 5:58. Not sure I fully understand, but I’ll give it a go. Thanks again!
I know its an old video, but you just solved my problem, that thin spring around throttle, i had no idea where it connected to, thanks so much, from Australia
Thanks for the Video! I wish you could show how to actually adjust the governor. My Hustler only makes 2900RPM, but according to the manual it should make 3600RPM, and I cannot figure it out.
Great job on figuring it out. Mine was filthy and it fell apart taking it apart. So I was flying blind on re assembly as well. All the connections are hidden. What a silly ass way to make it
Just want to let you know you saved me a trip to the dealer. I took the plate and Governor arm off to replace the governor seal. The first time I started it up it revved to the moon!
Thanks so much. My 08, john deere x320 fh661v engine carb linkage fell off when I just had to replace the crankshaft from the pto clutch bolt breaking off inside. Tried everything to get the bolt out and then the ez out broke off far inside and could not get that out. Wish I had the newer valve tapped adjusters as these old original ones are almost impossible to set the valves. Just waiting for a new bottom case gasket because with gasket sealer it is not enough of a shim and the crank lock's up in the case and won't turn. Why would a pto clutch bolt just decided after 13 years to snap off? I was really worried about this linkage, but I asked my local john Deere dealer for a schematic of how it all connects. Hope I got it correct now. Thanks. 😁
Thanks for the information but still trying to figure out which screw I’m turning to the left to make the proper adjustments. Thanks in advance for an answer
Great video thanks. Went through the same process and as I don't really know the game, I decided to just replace the carbie ignition coils and plugs. Starts perfect, no smoke and runs clean with and without pto engaged. BUT it's at full revs and I can't get it to idle. Can you please advise. Thanks.
Thanks for this video. I lost the clip that locks the long linkage from the governer arm to the throttle lever...this has happened to me before. It always happens when I am stressed and fighting all these poorly designed controls.
Just a note ; I think the slot at 6:55 is to set the governor spring tension "that is the top RPM" rather than bending the spring tab! I am embarrassed that I didn't see this at first. WE just live and learn don't we????
Do you have a video showing anything about the two limit screws on the bottom of the plate and what they are doing. Flange was bent on one of mine and they don't seem to be doing anything. Thank you for your video. It's still helping people years later.
Thanks for the video and allowing us to see behind the governor plate. I am having issue setting the governor. not running the throttle rod is in wide open position, yours I noticed was at idle. Can you explain what the difference is. My engine is same model. Thanks
Thanks for the great video. I have a Scag Zero turn powered by a Kawasaki FX730V. The governor shaft seal was leaking. I replaced the rubber seal. When I reapplied the linkage on the shaft I attempted to put it back as it was originally. The engine runs great while cutting but when I return the control arms to stop position the engine has a tendency to increase the RPM's; making me think the gov isn't adjusted correctly. (but I didn't disassemble or readjust the gov.) I attempted to relocate the gov. plate onto the flat spot of the shaft. Any ideas? Tim C.
Is the governor rod behind the control panel? I feel that is where I have a leaking seal and searching videos on how to disassemble the FH721V on a Ferris Pro Cut S series. Thanks,
Thanks for video, would be nice to see the throttle cable and coke cable connected as mine are not connected and need to reconnect it all. I think I can figure it out though. Just a suggestion as all manuals make it hard to see these linkages.
Very informative video,on my kaw twin 61" ferris will not stay at rpm I set when running ,slows back to idle . Is this a govener or throttle cable problem?
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to find the solution to a recent issue I am having with my Kawasaki FR730V which is on my Husqvarna tractor model GTH24K54. First I will say that the engine has about 730 hours on it and is just shy of 10 years old. Yesterday, the throttle would not go to full power nor would it drop down to idle . it looks like all the parts are moving, arms, springs, etc. but it just continues to run at idle with very high rpms and will not max out as it has in the past, which is needed when the grass is as high as it has gotten these past few weeks. I'm desperately searching for suggestions. I'm certainly not an small engine mechanic but i have done all the servicing on this tractor for the past 10 years and I'm hoping this is something that I can tackle without too much hassle. I will add that the heat shield for the muffle pipe cracked and half of it has fallen off (into the abys I guess). I have ordered a replacement for that. I mention this because I have read that heat may have an impact considering the throttle mechanism is right above it. Thanks! look forward to any/all suggestions.
So can you increase the governor max throttle without taking the plate off? After having my carburetor rebuilt, my mower's max throttle speed is now only about 90% before I sent it in. I want to adjust it back to whatever the max throttle was before having it worked on. Thanks in advance.
I was changing out the throttle /choke cables and knocked off the linkage in front. Can you send me a picture of how that curved linkage wire is connected to the clip to hold it in place. Kawasaki FH641V. Thanks.
I’m in this situation now with a Kawasaki FM570v in my toro 419xt. I’m in trouble here. The throttle linkage doesn’t move up or down so I’m in a bit of trouble on this
Thank you for recording this for posterity! I inherited a zero turn with the FH680V that's obviously had some work done on it - I've been poring through Kawasaki service manuals but the poor diagrams only show so much. This is very helpful. Only question I have is that my throttle does not seem to want to hit the idle stop - it's either loose with some movement if I have the throttle down, and tightly open with no movement when it's open. Is that common?
I need help with my Kawasaki FH451v, my high rpm do no not stay in high... when I go into high rpm the governor goes back to low. any idea what it can be? how should i adjust the governor?
Do you know much about the Kawasaki fx801v with the governor arm that is a two piece. I can not seem to get enough rpm out of this motor and do not know how to set it
long shot but hoping for a response, the smallest adjustment when increasing throttle almost instantly puts it at full throttle. i had replaced crank seal, case seal and shaft seal for governor. what could i had done wrong on re-assembly to cause this
I saved a cub cadet zero turn from a scrap yard. After fixing the wiring and replacing fuel lines I managed to get the engine running. However it runs at full throttle even with the throttle set to low(turtle) I'm thinking it's a governor issue. I'm going to try and sort it out. Hopefully I'll get it in proper working order so I can mow my yard and not sling a piston through the side of the engine. (It's the exact same engine as the one in the video)
What are the signs of a Gov being broken? I had to adjust mine the opposite of your directions to keep it from just running away. I turned my Gov shaft clockwise and throttle closed, then tightened. That at least lets me adjust the throttle, but if I go over 1/2 throttle it really lets loose and I have to be careful to keep it under 4000rpm (4500 rpm sounds scary!!).
Hi, I just rebuilt a Kawa Fr691 and It's my first time attempting this so I'm pretty green. I literally have idle and wide open and I've tried to adjust the linkage a few times. I have stumbled upon some info saying the flag might not have been set right in the sump when I reassembled so before I pulled the engine back apart I wanted to see if there was something I was missing. Currently my governor arm only stops about 1 inch from contacting the carb when I move it up after removing the linkage/rods/Springs. Just looking for general info if possible, should I be able to move that governor arm that high, I replaced the piston arms, and cam shaft on this mower originally fyi, and I did not pay attention to how the governor was set in anyway when reassembling.
The governor arm should have maybe 20deg of rotation. Sounds like something got assembled incorrectly. Don't feel bad - we've all had to assemble things twice
My John Deere Z445 25hp Kawasaki just started surging. Any ideas on why it would suddenly start doing that? Seems intermittent, gets worse when it warms up. Sometimes it just goes away...bad gas? Thought about adding some Seafoam through the next tank of gas. Also, air filter was pretty dirty. I cleaned it and order a new one, but not here yet. Fuel filter is new & clean.
Thank you for posting this video. I have the same motor on my Ferris zero turn. I took off the carb and cleaned it but lost one of the welsh plugs on the top (not the ones that are raised but sit directly on the body of the carb). I cannot find a part number anywhere online, would you happen to know the part# or recommend somewhere that I could find it?
Sorry, I have no idea. You can sometimes find generic plug sets online and you just have to find the one that fits. Measure the diameter of the hole and search taht way (ie 4mm welch plug)
Know it's an old post, BUT, the welch plugs are just to keep out gunk from getting down into the high and low mixture adjustment screws, put a little grease down into them and then silicone over.
I have replaced the carburetor on my Kawasaki engine because it was surging. This did not fix the problem. Could the governor be causing this issue. I can see the throttle on the carburetor going up and down as the engine surges.
I need help with similar engine. Fh541v is reving up high even at low throttle. I have to shut it off to keep from blowing up. Any ideas what's causing this
Got a Kawasaki fh580v engine on a Scag Pro V, and it is incredibly hard to pull the pull start, so hard that I have been through 6 recoil starters. Adjusted the valves and and it still is super hard to pull, one of the 6 recoil starters that has grenaded was just after the valves were adjusted. Ordered another but at $50 a pop it’s getting expensive. If you can pull it without destroying the pull start it starts right up and runs great. Is there an automatic compression release on these engines? Would that involve pulling the camshaft out?
Are you sure the resistance is compression rather than friction or drag somewhere? There is a compression release mechanism built into the camshaft, but I've never seen one malfunction unless it broke in half. The cam uses a secondary governor to raise and lower some ball bearings in the lobes to create a variable cam. If that governor got jammed, it could prevent the decompression. No easy way to check without taking the engine apart unfortunately.
My 22 hp kawasaki engine is in my husqvarna lawn tractor. My plate s holes are both oblong and I cant find the right spot. When I'm throwing snow the Gov doesn't kick in and when I move the plate it doesnt run right or backfires. I'm at a loss
I took my off and now my Kawasaki fh601v runs faster, if I move the governor plate either up or down will that make my rpms go faster or slower? I just ordered a rpm tachometer, thanks, I'm just wondering how to slow down the motor,
Just wanted to let you know what a tremendous help your Illustrated explanation is! Very clear and concise.
Thanks for this video. I have looked at 25 pictures and at least 10 videos, but you are the first to show where the linkage hooked on the back side. Thanks again

Thanks a bunch. I was getting quite upset with myself for not making the linkage better. This was just what I needed.
Thank you for the video. I was given a Yazoo that a friend gave up on after taken it apart. This helped me get it running great again.
thank you for the video, while i was pulling the whole piece the governor spring came off and i was unsure where to attach but thank you to this video i figure it out.
Perfect. You saved me loads of time trying to figure mine out.
This is the best video that I have seen on RUclips, this young man knows exactly what he's talkin about. Great knowledge the best I've ever seen.❤
Thanks! As you mentioned I could not find a good picture on how to setup and which way to turn the governor. Bent taking apart to replace crank case seal. This is very helpfull.

Glad it helped. A tip for future projects, use different colored sharpie markers on the shaft/hole pairings so you know where to put things back
Thank you Thank you Thank you! This engine has been driving me nuts for hours now. I replaced the governor shaft seal and could not figure out why it was over revving on me. Kept thinking i had the linkage wrong. I had it on full throttle when setting the governor but i needed to hold the linkage at full throttle while setting it. Thanks again
Thank you for making this video, I 've been looking for this for about three days, I can now put it together.

When he says "spindle", he is referring to the governor shaft, which comes out of the crankcase.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I can now put my 601 back together. 👍
Oil leak , marked everything but after putting back together it running wide open. No Governor control.
Thanks, One of the most Beneficial My Needs. Detailed, Well Explained, with Good Quality Video to show what You are Explaining.
I know its an old video, but you just solved my problem, that thin spring around throttle, i had no idea where it connected to, thanks so much, from Australia
You just saved me. I couldn't figure out where that big spring hooked to on that bracket. Thank you!
Very informative and well done. Thank you for taking time to make this video. Linkage is definitely important and your video gives great visual.
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER! THIS ISTHE ONLY VIDEO I HAVE FOUND THAT HELPED ME. YOU ARE THE MAN.
Thanks. Good quality, good explanation and thanks for the tip on the coil bolt.
Thank you. Best video I've seen on this matter. Good visual. 👍
Thank you! Couldn't find anything on how to adjust this. Throttle cable works great now.
Just what I was looking for thanks for your video
Thank you for taking your time Very that was helpful again, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. Buddy.
Awesome tips, you saved the day!
Thank you for this video, it helped too.
Thanks for showing. I really appreciate it...
I was trying to figure out what my small Spring went to this video helped thanks. liked!!!!
Thanks, I needed this ..... sooooo helpful
Thank you for the video. I was confused and set the governor clockwise (not good lol) like a Brigs and it lost all governor control.
Great help! Thank you for this!
Thanks for this video.. I didn't know where the little spring went... a return choke spring.. Thanks for letting me know where it went 👍
Thank you, this saved me a whole lot of trouble.
Thanks for your video it really helps.
Thanks for the info great job!
Just what I needed, thank you so much! Working on a FH541V and was about to rip my hair out haha!

Thanks for the video! I was in the same boat. Got it now.
Thanks for the great video. Now I just Have to figure out how to set the governor
Just want to let you know you saved me a trip to the dealer. I took the plate and Governor arm off to replace the governor seal. The first time I started it up it revved to the moon!
Just wanted to thank you for the video !!! Credit you with the fix..
Great video thank you thank you so much

Could you do a video on how to adjust one of these Kawasaki engines then get it running!
Any idea what the part# or the spring holder/retainer is called that snaps in on the throttle linkage?
Thank you. Hardly no info on adjusting the governor's on these engines. U need info on how to adjust i think fx730 27 hp Kawasaki governor
sana marami kpang magawang vedio tong kol sa motor
Very nice. Gotta 721 with some bogging issues right now.
So when you have the throttle set, you adjust the governor lever all the way up and then tighten it?
I was changing out the throttle /choke cables and knocked off the linkage in front. Can you send me a picture of how that curved linkage wire is connected to the clip to hold it in place. Kawasaki FH641V. Thanks.

Do you have better picture of underneath I have a 721D in a Ventrac having trouble adjusting the governed correctly. Thanks
Sorry, don't have this engine anymore. I had a 721D as well - the governor adjustment procedure should be the same
Thank you for posting this video.
Thank you
I have replaced the carburetor on my Kawasaki engine because it was surging. This did not fix the problem. Could the governor be causing this issue. I can see the throttle on the carburetor going up and down as the engine surges.
I am struggling with my FH601v and every time i start it up, its stuck on full throttle. Thoughts?
