- Burger Scholar George Motz is taking you on a ride through regional American fast-food burger history! A lot of the big, commercial fast-food places have given the hamburger a bad wrap. Which is why George wants to set the record straight and show you two family-owned, hyper-regional burger chains that still do it right-Swensons in Ohio, and Fat Mo's in Tennessee. These beloved burgers are highly unique, and take a few twists and turns to get to the finished product. Swenson's "Galley Boy" burger uses both barbecue and tartar sauce. Meanwhile, the "Double Mo" burger from Fat Mo's incorporates a secret 18-spice Persian marinade. In the words of George, "These places are proof that you don't have to sell out to be a success!"

My dad worked at a factory very close to the original Fat Mo’s for 40 years. When I was a kid, he would bring home a bag of Fat Mo’s burgers every Friday night. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I went back and watched a bunch of Burger Scholar Sessions after seeing this comment and I can confirm that George has burnt himself in some way, shape, or form, in almost every one.

@@micktyler6579 yeah true. It came about because the voice actor was vegetarian (vegan maybe?) and they wanted him to do advertisements for meat as Shaggy. As far as I know he fired back and said he wouldn’t voice the character at all until they changed him to a vegetarian.

@@Granger744 you're correct, I'm pretty sure it was due to a Toy deal with some fast food company like McDonald's or Burger King, there were going to be kids meals with Scooby characters and they wanted Casey Kasem to voice Shaggy for a commercial which he morally disagreed with.

Love it! Swenson’s is a gem in NE Ohio. Great job on the recreation of the Galley Boy. The only ingredient that no recipe can recreate is the memory of eating there as a kid!

As someone who grew up a couple miles from a Swenson's I'm really happy it got some love on Burger Scholar. I always figured George Motz knew about it given the more obscure places he's been, just happy more people will learn about the NE Ohio gem!!!!
I agree. I personally think Swensons is in that elite class of fast food burgers. I can't decide whether them or In n Out is my favorite.

My man!! Fat Mo's is a LEGEND! I used to live within walking distance, everything on the menu is great, even the veggie burger and fried pickles! Absolute must stop if you're in Nashville!

Same deal for me, it has made me try out about 15 different vegan burger replacements - some taste almost identical to beef, so I'm still enjoying burgers!

There are several Fat Mo's in the surrounding cities like Murfreesboro and Smyrna that are sit down as well as drive through, and they also serve an almost 3lb burger that has all the normal toppings along with bbq sauce, sauteed mushrooms and onions, jalapenos and other stuff and GOOD LORD is it good
that 3lb burger has been a memorable part of many regretful nights in college xD

A while back I started a spreadsheet listing all the restaurants I want to try when in different parts of the country/around the world. I love George's show because I add two or three restaurants to that list every episode!

I absolutely love this dude, man. First time watching him I thought to myself "eh, burger scholar? Really?" but I was instantly hooked. Dude knows his shit down to a T, and his personality is genuine as hell. Give this man a longer show, he deserves more airtime.

My grandfather was a carhop at the original Swensons. Finally getting one down in Southern Ohio this year
I grew up nearest the original Market St. location in Akron. Back then (early-mid 80's) it was just a nondescript cinder block building with a parking lot around it. I was surprised by how many Cadillacs one would see in such a slummed-out looking location -- which, of course, were grandparents spoiling their grandkids. :)

I myself have worked as a professional cook in many kitchens but this show has taught me the true art of burger craft. Ive tried quite a few burgers from this show and everytime they turn out fantastic and better than any other burger I could get at a joint around me. Thankyou

I used to drive 200+ miles from Cincinnati to Akron for my Swensons fix. I live in NC with family in Illinois.. I drive through Akron (adds about 8 hours to the drive) just for my fix. Dang, it's been so long.... Need to make a trip and go! Another drive-in in the Akron area is Skyway. Similar burgers, also very good. George, I LOVE YOU for this!!!!
