Thank you very, very much for this video series! Per your guidance, I fabricated a bearing adjuster tool, collected all needed replacement parts and tools and dove into this repair on my 2013 Ram truck. As anticipated, the forward pinion bearing had failed on mine, so I did the same as you and replaced all bearings races, seals, crush-sleeve and pinion nut. Also replaced the axle bearings while things were apart. The whole job went great thanks to your informative videos and commentary. Thanks again for the great resource!!! :-)
I just wanted to say thank you. your video was well done and easy to follow. I finished putting in new bearings in the rear of my dodge ram. I never would have attempted the fix without your help. I made the tool for adjusting the preload on the carrier bearings and I also used my lathe and some pipe to make a tool to press the big bearing on the pinion. A big thumbs up and a thank you from texas
Hi, thank you so much for posting. Excellent Video, CLEAR and EASY to follow. As an amateur the idea of using lathe tools and Shop press to rebuild bearing pinions can be a bit overwhelmed. So I will not take on this challenge of Differential repair, but take the truck to a shop. But the video sure helped me gain the knowledge of the internal working mechanism of of the Differential so I can communicate the issues to the service adviser... And yes, the C-clip retainer is sure SCARY... What a poor design!! Think of how they would engineer parts on the space shuttles is a scary thought... Thanks again. Just SUBSCRIBED.
So what would cause a loose chain noise when I de-celerate. People keep saying it's the rear differential. But the sound in this video isn't anything like the noise I have. It's up front and sounds like a loose chain.
Gotta say man that I do fully endorse your actions to involve your "little lady". Make it a family moment. I just stumbled on this vid but I will be subscribing.😁
Great video with good explanation of parts, tools and methods. The bearing adjuster tool is key, so I recommend everyone view that video and the other two videos that complete this differential repair job. definitely going to subscribe to this channel.
I love it when you bring in the kids. I haven't been doing car repair for very long, and some of the tasks are still kind of intimidating. Seeing kids and other non-professionals is encouraging. They're only doing the jobs which are within their capabilities, of course, but that same rule applies to me. Good job, kids.
Wish my father showed me these things at his business...best wishes to you and your family.. the children will come back and take care of you when you get old...take it easy...
I learned something new today. At 4:08 you placed the tire under the frame. Not sure if you did that on purpose, but if the jack stand fails, the truck falls on the rim and not my face. Thanks.
Mine is like jerking and jarring when I put it in reverse and try to back out of my jar of light I was watching the drive shaft when my buddy backed it up just a couple of foot maybe up to 5 ft 6 ft it was like spinning smooth as could be one second and then it would like jerking jar and it will go back to spending smooth I'm hoping I can either replace the gears or put some stop slip in it and do a rebuild kit myself without having to buy the whole rear end and the axles and all hoping but thanks for the video and advice my mechanic buddy knows about all this stuff and is very gifted in this line of art I am not I know basic maintenance and not enough of that even but watching your video has taught me a little bit more about it and also I appreciate the knowledge y'all keep up the good work
Excellent. Looks fairly easy but I think Ill hire this one. I think I can get it done for less than the cost of materials and tools. . The noise is exactly whats going on with my Dakota. I have replaced every axle bearing and velocity joint in my 4x4 trying to track down that sound. Good video !! (needed the bearings anyway 200,000 miles and still runs good.
Thank you very much for the instructions. It has completely prepared me to do the job, however, I need to know where to purchase the bearings and the seals for this job. I live in South Florida or I may buy them on-line....please direct me. Thanks.
Would this apply to a dually as well. I have this problem on a 93 cummins dually, I'm debating whether to go with a newer dodge differential but I have not been able to find much imfo on 1st gen dodge dually rear end swap for newer dodge diff. With disc brakes. Let me know what you think. Great video, thanks for the good imfo.
Have 2001 ram 2500 diesel when making left turns the engine revs like its in neutral and after turn is complete the tranny or rear end grabs again and truck is ok ever hear of this?
Great vid. However, doesn't seem it's the issue I'm experiencing. I'm hoping you can help out. I have a 2016 1500 sport model with the 8spd/hemi. I am hearing a rattle from the passenger side rear, possible the exhaust, but not 100% sure. It happens mostly on cold starts and the rattle used to go away somewhat as I drove and the truck warmed up. Now I hear it consistenly, especially over bumps. I haven't had this truck long, and started noticing this rattle as the weather got colder. What could this be? Again, it seems it is coming from the right rear of the truck, possibly behind and/or below the cab. Thanks again.
Hi, I have had my 2005 dodge 150 ram HEMI, diferencial worked on 2 times in about 3 years, and I have the same problem again so I’m leaning towards getting a diferencial from a yunk yard, mi cuestión is what’s compatible or how to know, thank you
Great videos. Wonder how many miles on this truck; in other words, about how many miles until pinion bearings go bad? I'm only intimidated about setting the pinion preload. Hope it's going to be as easy as you said, torquing in small increments. Also curious you didn't do a tooth contact pattern. If the pinion preload is OK, then the tooth contact should be??
Your Awesome Bud I Just Subscribed Thanks Just Bought A 4x4 Dodge 97 Rear End locked up On The freeway Had It replaced I Do all my own Crate Engines And tranys Now that I Got My truck back this morning I Still hear A little Howling This Tells me i Need To Inspect My Front Differential Gears I just dropped A New Crate Engine In This older tired Drive Train Trany is Next When I can But i still Have the front differential and Transfer Case To consider But when im All done Shel be worth it Love your vids !!~!
Love seeing the little lady fixin stuff :) Reminds me of my nephew (6 or 7 at the time) went to go find a pry bar, little rascal had all but one bolt outta that fender!
The whine from a manual in reverse results from the straight cut gear teeth. The gears engage all at once making that particular noise. Typically the forward gears are bevel cut, like the ring and pinion so the engagement of the gears is progressive and quieter, though not as strong.
I have a noise coming from the back of my truck. it's an 03 dodge. it's not that high pitch whine that you described as a car going in reverse though. it's more of a roar I guess you would call it. it does it when the truck is moving no matter what speed. I can hear it.
+Ghondi1 it is either your U-joints (although most the time the make a "whomp whomp" sound) wheel bearings, or differential carrier bearings. my dad's truck had that same roar you are describing...it was the differential bearings
Hey, bro liked your videos very helpful, was wandering if you had a part# for the kit you used to rebuild rear end. I been lookinh for a master rebuild kit cant find🤠
nice family there those who work together stay together and damn that c clip was easy to get out, mine was a pain in the behind! lastnight axle would not push all the way in (even hitting it with hammer) had to pry on it (in the diff) and it still wouldnt come all the way but was able to get clip out, then rechanging the axle bearing and putting it back in axle still wouldnt go in anymore? had to pry on it again and wedge clip it a lil then pound it in with hammer..
Great video, thanks so much. I love how the kid is doing this kind of work and yet there are grown men who are to lazy to even put gas in a car. GREAT JOB KID ;-)
I have a 2006 Ram 1500 4x4 and when I’m driving I can hear a rumbling sound under my truck and it’s not the wheel bearings since I payed 400 dollars to get those fixed.
this story reminds me when my uncle was watching me. He was a tow truck driver. I watched what he did and where he hooked the chains up and how he secured the flatbed. how he winched everything in and how to attach lights. Eventually I was 13-14 years old doing this job while he was filing the paperwork. I was even given tips just for surprising people I gues. What kid hooks their stuff up secures it and then comes back smiling like what else ?

Both mom and daughter have more differential experience than i ever want.
How cute!! I love how family oriented this video is makes it less boring.
Glad to see that your daughter is always wearing her eye protection. Great video!!
I love when the kids get involved in this stuff! Always nice to see them learning useful skills.
Oh you bet!
Your series on changing the pinion bearings, including the homemade tool, helped immensely in my SUCCESSFUL pinion bearing replacement. Thank-you!
You sir are a refreshing and informative look at auto repair
I love this video....The cutest little female mechanic....God Bless her...!!!!!

Where'd you get the chrome trim?
Excellent video - thanks for taking the time to make it!
Love the idea of how you got the little girl involved in this video. Bravo :)
how much would you normally charge for a job like this? or do you know roughly what the average price would be?
Thank you very much for the instructions. It has completely prepared me to do the job, however, I need to know where to purchase the bearings and the seals for this job. I live in South Florida or I may buy them on-line....please direct me. Thanks.
Greetings.
What is the year of the van?

Does this cause a howling noise?

I just went to remove the pin and found that the 5/16 bolt was snapped off by the previous owner. Do I drill it out? Thanks.
Were is the ratio number in the differential, 2003 dodge ram 1500
Great job getting the kids involved.
Can I put a 2011 rear end on a 2010

Very informative set of videos. Adding the kids was cute too. And now I know that I can not do this in my driveway.
OMG, the kid's awesome !!! Those guns get heavy.

I'm wondering if a 2008 rear-end fit in a 2002 both dodge 1500 but the 2008 is a v8 and the 2002 is a v6

I must be too late. I didn't find the homemade tool in Part 1. Where (how many minutes into the video) is it?
Love seeing the little lady fixin stuff :)
Reminds me of my nephew (6 or 7 at the time) went to go find a pry bar, little rascal had all but one bolt outta that fender!
Looking back at it... the pry bar I couldn't find he had taken out of my work bag for God only knows what. 😂🤣😂
very clever video nice touch with the family helping

Can't get axle out of the rear end
Great, I like it!
I don't quite understand is it that Pin that holds the axles apart, so that the "C" clips stay in their groove ? P. S. the kids are GREAT!
that young lady does more work to that truck than most of young guys i know these days!
You're little girl is a beast dude lol raising them right
