    Cinderella Man makes me tear up every time I watch it. One of the best films ever, and one of Crowe's best films. Crowe is a phenomenal actor. Love him in Gladiator but great as he was in the film, Cinderella is my favorite of Crowe's films. Jim Braddock is a good man with a golden heart. A quintessential family man. That scene where he went to fight starving because he saved the meager food for his children breaks my heart every time. Husbands and fathers like him have a special place in heaven. The Depression era tested people's mettle; it was a time when those made of lesser stuff turned into brutes and there were good men like Braddock.

    I recently heard a story in an interview with the director of the Civil War movie Gettysburg. They were casting the movie and hadn't decided on who would play the part of Col. Chamberlain. They hadn't signed any big "name" actor to play the part yet like the producers wanted, so the director started holding open auditions just in case they didn't get a star to play the part. One of the young unknown actors that came in to audition was Russel Crow, who wasn't known in the US yet. He apparently nailed the audition.
    The director wanted to cast him in the part right then and there, but a producer wasn't having it. They kept searching for a few weeks and the director kept saying they should just hire the young Australian actor. The producer told him, "If you mention that Australian guy one more time, I'm pulling my funding, and the movie won't get made." The director dropped it, and they eventually cast Jeff Daniels.
    Now don't get me wrong Jeff Daniels was perfect in the role, and it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the part of Chamberlain. But I do wonder what Crowe would've been able to do with the role had he been given the chance.

The shots, the music, the commentary, etc. on top of that, history teachers across the world use that movie to teach their students what the Great Depression was really like. 10/10 movie on every level. The only thing I didn't like about Cinderella Man was when I found out how they character assassinated the antagonist, Max Baer, to "tell a better story."
    According to Baer's family, he was tortured by the deaths he caused, although others claimed he boasted about those victories. (One thing not in dispute is that, after killing Joseph Campbell in a 1930 match, Baer donated purses from his next several fights to the dead man's family.)

    • @baceff6478
      @baceff6478 22 дня назад +5

      honestly the only thing they did wrong for Baer is when he tells Jimmy "people die in there"...other than that they say Baer talked a lot of smack on people and their wives out of fun just like in the movie and they even subtly showed he had a soft spot for Jimmy and didn't want him to get hurt

    • @DH1985-MB
      @DH1985-MB 21 день назад +4

      In the film it is the press and others that label Baer a killer and that's exactly what happened at the time. It's not showing you Max Baer from his families view, it's showing it from boxings point of view, the press and journalists are highlighted throughout the film for the stories they make up. The film never shows Baer bragging about being a killer.

    • @MDK384

      you can be publicly boastful and privately tortured. especially as a boxer when being boastful is kind of part of the job for promoting fights, but yes i'm sure they leaned into the antagonistic aspect of baer. have to have a villain.

    Many years ago in Auckland, New Zealand I was strolling down Queen Street and here was this guy busking so I stood a spell and heard him out. I put $5 dollars in his guitar case because he was such a scrawny looking kid but he was as keen as hell to do his gigging and was not very good compared to some of the Street Talent around the city, I remember thinking he shouldn't have left his day job and ought think of a career change. That man was Russell Crowe or Russ Le Roc as he ran with back then. $5 bucks would have afforded him a session at McDonalds at the time and going by the look of him here, he has kept up with eating the Maccas. Good onya Russ, talk about being committed to make a name for yourself, Ya did good kid.
