Peter Jackson has said Casting LOTR was super important because he didn't want known actors and big block buster attention being focused on the characters. In doing so it would ruin the whole atmosphere of the film and detract form the characters themselves and not allow the audience to fully believe what we were seeing on screen. So hats off to Russel for picking up the sublet silence PJ gave him as his way of saying a polite no thank you.

Master and Commander remains the most underrated movie of all time. Ever. The only criticism would be things like they say 'shoot' in the RN instead of 'fire.' Fire means something different on a wooden ship. You're reduced to nitpicking to find anything wrong with that film, it was FANTASTIC.

Met him in New Orleans at his concert for his band. Nice guy, got to hug him. Didn’t get a chance to talk at length with him because of the rest of the people waiting to meet him before the show, but I made him genuinely smile with what I said to him about his music and how I related to his movie Land of Bad (I am retired military and all too familiar with toxic leadership). Everyone else seemed to want to talk about Gladiator and I guess that get’s old after a while. So it seems he appreciated me bringing up something else.

The actual truth of gladiators and how much closer they were to professional wrestlers than duelists to the death (most of the time) is very interesting to get into. The way they were split into different "classes" based on their body type and given specific kinds of gear, and matched up to each other very specific ways. Very RPG like in a way. Plus the fact the best known ones were essentially larger than life celebrities, endorsements, all that stuff.
