The Guy Pearce story is gold! Their chemistry on-screen together is the main reason (out of many) why “L.A. Confidential” remains one of my favorite films of the 90’s. Great interview!!
If Master and Commander had been released one year earlier or later. His role as Capt. Jack Aubrey would be the one we'd be talking about. One of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it every few months every year. Excellent, excellent movie!

Captain Jack Aubrey is more of a kind, straightforward man with great leadership and temper. I personally found Johnny Depp Captain Jack Sparrow more legendary but that’s just me.
So true that Capt. Jack and Horatio Hornblower were great characters set in the Napoleonic wars, but Captain Morgan is the best...his rum is delicious.
Russel Crowe in Gladiator was not only an impeccable actor, he got so deeply under the skin of his character that it's simple IMO: Maximus is my top favorite character of any movie ever made.
Awesome that you enjoyed the movie for me I think Russel had a better performance in some of his other movies not because of any criticism on his acting skills more due to the script of the movie which is one of the reasons I hear that it had to be rewritten many times during the production however with what he had he did a great performance and had some memorable lines.
His peaceful, reflective reponse to his career choices have left me with the feeling that he is a solid, self-actualized person of great character. I'd like to sit with this type of person and have a strong drink or even a mild green tea and discuss what comes next and why. He looks peaceful to me...and that is a grand measure of a (hu)man.
There is no more iconic character than Captain Jack Aubrey in Peter Weir's masterpiece, Master and Commander. It was not only Crowe's best role, it could be the best movie of the last 50 years. There is not one false note in it. Why is it missing? I could listen to Russell Crowe talk all day. What a creative mind.
I made the mistake of rewatching it lately and my god we have come a long way with fight scenes since then. Story and acting is still marvelous, but the fights looks like a B-film compared to todays movies.
So articulate & engaging Russell is, these GQ break downs are a hit & miss for me, you can tell 3 min in if the speaker is going to keep you hooked or not. I found myself wanted to watch Russell speak for hours. Fantastic video
That decapitation was such a nice touch. It gave the character a sense of being so much at the top of his game he's bored and getting creative just to entertain himself. Really cool that Crowe came up with it, it's clear he really understood the scene he was in.
@@NomeCultJoe - or search for some of his vids where he's literally whining, crying (actually crying), etc. Otherwise, we literally had to struggle through the one Crowe film we managed to watch (can't recall, he was that memorable).
I remember how transfixed I was with Russell Crowe's role as Maximus. Such a perfect movie; great acting and the story line included 'divine retribution'.
I love everything about Russell Crowe. His acting is fantastic, his ability to express himself so clearly (with that great accent) and how genuine he is just puts him right at the top of my list.
The first time I saw Russell Crowe was in “The Quick and the Dead”. He spent most of the movie chained to a pillar in this old West town. He was totally unknown here in the U.S but Jesus, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Saw “Romper Stomper” after that. I loved young Russell Crowe so much. And then (after “Gladiator”) he got old and doughy and had some bad report cards in the School of Being Civil to Other People and my love disappeared. This interview was great. I’ve never seen/heard Crowe speak so eloquently and with such love towards the people he’s made movies with. So - great interview , GQ or whoever made this happen.
Such a great career I wish he would've talked about "American Gangster" but more than anything I wish he would've talked about "The Nice Guys" (soooo underrated, need a sequel ASAP).
"Russel Crowe" - great man, great actor. Seen Romper Stomper, LA Confidential, Robin Hood, Master and Commander and the truly excellent Gladiator and loved them all.
@Lizza Royal What a charming fella he is. Bravo. --This makes me want to see Robin Hood but also to skip Unhnged. Imagine a 90 minute film focused on a man whose thought processes the script and the actor don't want to explore! Huge mistake. Still, we'll always have Master and Commander.
I can promise you, Russell - breaking down your most iconic characters was by NO means boring.. It was very interesting to hear you speak about the characters that you played.. Your a great actor..
He's been consistently great in every role he plays....and he has the best voice. Interesting to know he's part Maori... great grandmother or something.
I never realised what a distance there is between Russell Crowe and other actors. This man is a performer, an actor, a phenom, a force of reckoning. Others just show up and play themselves.
Really loved this breakdown, he's such a powerful actor and very intense, but has a very soft and smiley face when he's enjoying himself. His portrayal of Bud Whit in LA confidential is why i keep watching the film over and over
Why do people in this world has so much issues with aging?? As I got older, I see people aging not ''weird or old-looking'' but adorable and full of stories and experiences to share with others. Can't we just not focus on just image? Because we are always complaining about beauty standards and BLAH BLAH BLAH then we are the first ones to point out the ''flaws of aging''. It's exhausting.
Gosh!! Thanks for that!!! Exactly!!! Why to criticize so much? Let the guy be as he is and enjoy ( as I did) the stories and the very relaxed way he tells them. That surely is really something to talk about.
I think it‘s because young people have not much to show off - except for their youth. So mocking old people makes them feel powerful. Which is quite dumb.

What movie?

It’s so mesmerising i can’t not watch it if it’s on tv, just incredible, best acting of all time.
gladiator is the only movie, ive ever shed a tear whilst watching.
He is astounding in every role he has ever played. He is also one of the coolest, most down to Earth people it seems. Love you Mr. Crowe!
Bravo! Very well said
The problem with Russel Crowe is that he would have a drink. And then like 30 more, get irate, and try to throw you out of a window.
He’s n the wagon ...now and it looks good on him

Beautifully stated. Thank you.

That decapitation was such a nice touch. It gave the character a sense of being so much at the top of his game he's bored and getting creative just to entertain himself. Really cool that Crowe came up with it, it's clear he really understood the scene he was in.
