It's interesting to me that the "bird contemplation" scene is so powerful, yet so simply devised.
Most of our favorite scenes are like that.
I wondered if the symbolism of the robin was intentional - it's an incredibly friendly bird, especially for gardeners, and is often viewed as a good luck symbol. Maximus is a farmer as well as a general, so he would have been very familiar with the robin.

For the Romans, Augury (the act of reading birds and their flight patterns to tell the past, present, and future) is one of the oldest forms of divination. used in Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and probably more (but of course called by different names). The robin was often used since it had a special place in their mythology.

well the costumes are great, the score in the background by hans zimmer is great, russell is great, so in short, it's not so simply devised.
One of the most gifted actors of all time. Fantastic movie as well as his performance in 3:10 to Yuma.
I love how relaxed Rusell is with himself. He really is a treasure trove of memories and beautiful insights. And a cracking actor to boot.

Sounds like Ridley Scott is a very chill guy who doesn't panic like most producers in big budget films. He even praises the films of his that many critics and audiences hate.

@@vb8428 you should hear his WTF interview with Marc Maron. He's actually hilarious in it, in a cranky old man way.
There are just a few directors that can handle projects like gladiator, and ridley scott is at the top 2 probably. The size is just a huge responsibility, he was 60 at the time.
He's also a one-taker. One take, that's all you get and then he moves on.
Russell and Joaquin played their parts really well. Great movie Gladiator was.

Gladiator and Titanic I think was everyones first DVDs. They were some of the first movies u saw and thought " id watch that many times and i want it the best quality i can buy".

Excellent film and excellent performance by Crowe and excellent work by everyone. It’s amazing how there was essentially 22-26 good pages in the script and yet it became a modern classic.
He was truly amazing in Gladiator. Looked the part and acted so immersivity. Then with Hanz Zimmer sound track to boot .. unreal the script was so small. Was quite complex

Gladiator stands the test of time. It is better now than the first time. I viewed it as a "Braveheart" knock back then. I may even prefer Gladiator now.

Gladiator, the first Rambo, and John Wick movies are my go to staples when I don’t see anything good to watch.
I'm glad you said the first Rambo. And for me the first Wick was the best of that series as well
For me John Wick 2 is better but still, you have some solid picks overall.

I love Russel's work but I'd love to see a breakdown of what text in the film came from the screenwriters and what didn't. I'm pretty sure all the big scenes and dialogue were handed to him.
I'm pretty sure all of it came from the screenwriters. Just because they started with 20-ish pages doesn't mean they weren't writing more.
Thankyou, he's trying to rewrite history, he's not satisfied with starring in it.
