Synopsis:
A man robbed of his name and his dignity strives to win them back, and gain the freedom of his people, in this epic historical drama from director Ridley Scott. In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is one of the Roman army's most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus' devious son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences. His battle skills serve him well, and he becomes one of the most famous and admired men to fight in the Colosseum. Determined to avenge himself against the man who took away his freedom and laid waste to his family, Maximus believes that he can use his fame and skill in the ring to avenge the loss of his family and former glory. As the gladiator begins to challenge his rule, Commodus decides to put his own fighting mettle to the test by squaring off with Maximus in a battle to the death.

22 years later I still get chills watching this scene
I hope Galidator goes to TCM next year
You and me both! What a scene!
Chills and tears man... That helmet rising scene with bgm... Uuff
I really miss those days 😢😢😢😢
22 years ! Wow time flies ! It was amazing watching this in the theater.
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
"👍"
Most epic lines ever.
@@abrahamgideon Some of the most epic ones for sure. But there are some I'd put around the same level, such as, _"Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else."_ 😁
@@Wolf-ln1ml Thats an equally good one. Not sure who wrote it, but Mira Furlan owns that line. :)
@@Wolf-ln1ml One of the best sci-fi "fuck around and find out" moments
@@abrahamgideon J Michael Strascinsky
“I served with you at Vindabona”
I love that subtle acknowledgment of Maximus and his generalship from the ex soldier. The way he turns and gives the knowing look is also very telling.
חוץ מניפוח שרירים שיהיו מאכל לתולעים מה אתה מבין מהחיים?
That was an amazing line.Only noticed it today.
i was expecting such scenes in Napoleon but couldn't find one, it sounded fake
I heard it right, but I doubted. I needed the subtitles. Thanks. The accent makes it difficult for me to understand.
@@barbietuerick Same. Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator are such amazing movies, so my expection were very high
7:01
This very scene gives goosebumps even today.
" Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife.
I will have my vengeance in this life or the next " 😮😮
But if their is a next, then his wife and son are not really death, aren't they ? They live again maybe a better life, so maybe he needs to live with that and not being a egoïst
@@ShitinthemorningHe means on Eliseum Fields, sort of like Christian paradise.
You really can't tell the emperor, that you're about to kill him. Well, this is the way to tell the same thing.
@@Shitinthemorningbro are you fucking kidding me? It’s a figure of speech holy shit read the room
I always love the way the entire colousseum screamed "live" because the barbarians had won their battle fair and square. I never get tired of Gladiator, it's a true classic war film.
I can’t unsee the pressure tank on that chariot at 2:43
Doesnt matter how many times, I can watch this movie 5000 times and it still hits the same
That part when he throws the sword and shouts “Maximus” it’s brilliant
Makes you emotional
notice the detail where the sword is not perfectly tossed but maximus' hand just regrips it without effort, probably out of musle memory
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Also he didn't know his name yet
And how feeble the emperor looked trying to hush the crowd, and everyone ignored it. Now that's humiliation. Love it.
One of the most iconic scene in movie history.
Let’s be honest - the era of great movies are behind us.
Partly that’s because we happened to like more binge watching 12000 seasons of a fucking grey’s anatomy instead of one movie like this. Shame to the public, shame to us.
I don't know... Just to name a few, Beau is Afraid, The Nightingale, The Lighthouse & Ex Machina are among my favorites of all time and are rather recent movies. As for Triple A movies, I might agree, but there are still wonderful movies being made in my opinion!
Oppenheimer says otherwise
Yup, people can point out a few examples. But they are exceptions to the rule. Wokism has ruined cinema.
@@vajidali2658 Wokism? You mean those Disney and Marvel productions? You had your fair share of bad movies in the late 90s/early 2000s, too. Maybe they didn't try to be "woke" then, but that didn't make them better. There are more than "a few exapmples" that stick out as excellent films for me that came out in the last 10 years or so. Parasite, The Babadook, Her, Joker, The Irishman, Mad Max: Fury Road, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Wailing, Get Out, The Wolf of Wallstreet, Hateful Eight, The Master... the list goes on and on and is quite diverse in terms of genre. To be honest, I even think that there are more movies that I love from 2007 to 2023 than from 1990-2006... But that's quite the subjective matter.
A truly phenomenal movie. This scene always impacts no matter how many times you watch it.
Big baby lol
One of the greatest scenes in movie history in my opinion. Amazing action sequences and acting. I still get goosebumps when he takes his helmet off. 👏👌
My friend just died like a week ago. So this movie is very special to me because of that famous quote. The "I will have my vengance is this life or the next",and the "I will see you again, but NOT yet". Because I will see my friend,my father, and the the people that I love again in the after life, but not yet....
My condolences mate... was your friend killed? Revenge is a teribble disease... remember that.....
bro..i know how u feel...
n i understand wht you trying to say...
but revenge cannot be a answer...
... trust me.. once the moment your start step to revenge.. whatever the result..
its will.continiue
Maximus Decimus Meridius Kibiniro
Not yet 😇
So ein unfehre Kampf . Geschichte wiederholt sich . Leider 😢.
The way he greets his former commander... respectfully and honorably, even though he serves commodus. that's brotherhood!
I'm a little bit surprised this needs to be explained... He's giving an insincere salute as a mockery of the man who arrested him. Quintus only obtained his station through betrayal, Maximus gave this salute knowing it would not be returned.
@@sauercrowder with you on that. The “greeting “ is pure irony.
Probably the only time I have felt in a cinema that I am watching a scene that I will remember forever.. in a movie that 23 years later still is my favorite of all time. An ageless classic.
Yes, this scene, and a scene from Titanic when the band plays last song. the famous "Gentleman it was a priviledge playing with you tongiht!"
Best scene in a great movie,Pheonix should have got an Oscar.Brilliant.
It's true. One of the best villains/supporting cast ever. I think it's his second best role after Joker.
@@cun7us Totally agree.I love his acting.
and now Napoleon@@cun7us
A true masterpiece that only comes together once in a generation. The rousing music, the phenomenal acting by every single character, the atmosphere in this scene is a thing to be admired for its cinematic beauty.
All true, an incredible masterpiece, the best of all time.
Commodus: I rather enjoy surprises.
Maximus: Hold my beer.
The music makes this scene, perfectly timed to every part of the sequence! Incredible
This movie is where real men cried. Everytime I watch this I still get goosebumps. This is a true classic. I was around 7 years old when I first watched it. And I cried.
The acting, the dialogue, the music, just epic...
What a movie. Gives me chills every time I hear that famous speech.
20 some years later, this is still one of the best movie scenes! Superb acting!
It is the same feeling when I first watched this film and I still watch it now. No matter how many times I watch gladiator,I still feel the same.
Gladiator is a movie that makes you dream, just like Star Wars (the original) did. The prowess of Maximus and the ruthless Emperor in his shining armour on the top of his power, having fun with the games, deciding life and death, brilliantly played by Joaqin Phoenix! I can´t get enough!!
what a great performance from joaquin phoenix. even better knowing such a humble guy to play this role makes more amazing
You gotta love all the other gladiators jump right up around him to protect him no matter what to help their comrade because he lead them to victory.. goosebumps
Gladiator is the most beautiful historical film ever made (cast, set, sound, music, screenplay, exteriors, the story itself), impressive, touching, affectionate, true# Ridley Scot❤️💎
Winning the Best Picture & based of the remake 1964 movie The Fall Of The Roman Empire
It was so good that everyone including Ridley tried to recreate it the next few years and failed
Despite not being all that historical, but that doesn't really matter it's a fun adventure movie with a roman empire theme.
Literally everything. Even the costume designs were phenomenal. The movie is flawless.
This scene is to be taught in business schools. You have it all: the leader, the authority a-hole, the team work, the professionals , the desperates.
Fabulous!.
And the working slaves
I have lost count on the number of times I have watched this movie. Timeless movie, gives lessons about loyalty, leadership, teamwork, devotion to motherland and love for a great mentor. This is truly a wonderful movie.
By far one of the best scenes in cinema history. Who agrees with me?
If you have survived the fall of the Roman Empire, you kill this kind of pictures in the crib.
Just like everyone else I watched this as if new. This will always be a masterpiece. Russel and Joaquin didn't do many but they were exceptionally talented and this and a Beautiful Mind are just amazing from Crowe.
I just hope Hollywood doesn’t try to remake this classic.
Spectacular special effects and audio one of best films ever. Wish I could go back to those early 00's again
Joaquin Phoenix was magnificent in this movie. He should have gotten an Academy Award for this one.
I think he got
On all his movie, the person he portrayed is perfect. You forgot that it's only acting 😅
@@michaelamontemayor448 Isn't that the fact in all movies?
Na
brilliant actor
Joaquin Phoenix amazing performance
Great art completed with LEGENDARY music from LEGENDARY Hanz Zimmer , perfection
Live,Live,Live...... along with the background music..... and the emotions.......it is a masterpiece
The greatest movie ever made, Aussie Russell Crowe is magnificent as is Phoenix. That sensational score is Zimmer`s best work, this movie will never be equaled. Australian Lisa Gerard wrote the lyric in ideoglossia and finessed it perfectly in song. Moody, threatening and sombre. All together genius in movie.
23 years & I'm still enjoy watch it
One of the most iconic clips in cinematographic history really!!
Russell Crowe was made for this role‼️
Gladiator and LA Confidential two of my all time favourites!!
Iconic movie! Can you imagine if this was remade in this day and age... Unicorns, no fighting and a netflix cast that were traumatized by the script.
I was so in love with Joaqin.... even this day he gives this great villan vibes
These kinda movies will never get lost forever
23 years later and this is still my favorite movie of all time❤❤ perfect casting indeed such a great great story!
My favorite movie of all time. This is so well directed and acted ... two oscar's should have been granted here not one. Joaquin and Russell, two acting Titans.
Still get Goosebumps after watching the scene and the dialouge
This entire movie is more than epic.
I remembered this film while with my two auntie my uncle my cousin still alive. We watch it and now im watching it alone so sad. They are dead now.. soon we will meet again my love once.
Anayone who saw gladiator more than once will never forget this scene and dialogue. More so somebody who saw the movie 30 times in 2004.. like me. Know most of the dialogues and the song Elysium theme heard for many years..
That moment when th wrongful heir to th throne realizes he really has little choice but to giv a thumbs up for maximus - - - - - even knowing how trapped he's potentially becoming.....
One of the best moments in cinema
I love Joaquin Phoenix and Oliver Reed's characters expressions of bloodthirsty delight at the gruesome deaths.
There are very few things in this world that reach Perfection.... This movie is one of the perfect masterpiece of Art....❤ Timeless and breathtakingly beautiful....
One of the greatest films of all time
Such a powerhouse of a film. Seeing this on the big screen at full power just blows your mind. Fantastic film from start to finish. Steve 👍

5:36 i love how the guard enter the arena and Hagen ist just absolutly ready to fight them as well
Yeah, the Germans were really something.
One of the best movies ever.
My uncle had vcr player and he got this cassette “GLADIATOR@ and we would watch ot every sunday repeatedly
You're captivated by the thrilling showdown between Maximus and Commodus.
I was in high school when this came out and I still remember 1/2 the boys walking into our A level lesson on British government and politics quoting verbatim from the movie. The teacher took the register and got to one joker who said “my name is maximised decimus meridius, commander of the armies of the north etc etc”. All the girls in theclass were like “what the hell is wrong with these guys” and the teacher was rolling his eyes and smirking. It is such a generation defining movie for me. It is still the best action epic out there in my view (along with last of the mohicans which is amazing as well)
Joaquin is the GOAT.
Twenty-four years after the release of "Galdotor," this scene still sends shivers down your spine, its haunting power undiminished by time.
this is just cinema at its peak
imagine growing up watching Gladiator yet you only understand it in 2023 when you hit the vocabulary jackpot (English is my second language, I'm a caucasian north African)
Phoenix was perfect for this role 👌
I cannot get over how great this movie is WATCHED IT A BILLION TIMES ❤
One of the best films of all time in my opinion
One of the most beautiful scenes ever made/filmed
One of the best movies I have ever seen. Never get tired of it and this scene O.M.G
I remember watching this back in college during school days in cinema’s, brought back memories
How Russel Crowe play in this movie in 2000 and how he played in Thor Love and Thunder 2022. Show us how sick the world is nowadays.
Best moment (helmet reveal) from the best scene of the best film ever.
Hrdost je tim když jiný můžeš měnit vteřiny smrt bere jen kdo je jiný má za sebou . ❤ Srdce neumírají jen žijí v srdcích mrtvých sláva tomu co vyhrál respekt co jse postavil .
A very first movie i watch in movie theatre... with my father.. rest in peace😢
Not sure which gives greater chills. Russel's eyes when he turns round or his speech
Went to see it for my bday when it came out- the opening scene in a cinema was epic as was the rest of the movie - still one of my favourite films to this day in 2024 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🥃🍻
Joaquin Phoenix must be his best ever role. He is the very best in this role
8:24 The "I don't want peace. I want problems always" guy.
This movie is so great I love it. I'm watching like it's new. Russell crowe is a wonderful person.
22 years later still better than %99.9 movies
One of the greatest films of all time!
the 2 greatest actors of all time! Gladiatior movie is a masterpiece!

Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor

This is one of the best films of the last 100 years.
Joaquin was so excellent in this
A symbol of Loyalty to my own principles no matter what the truth is😊
7:20 gives me chills 100 times.
in my opinion this season and the last scene where he died after killing the king gives me goosebumps and moves me to tears
Best movie ever made.
I am Spasticus Autisticus!
I have watched this movie over 20 times. My only regret, not having seen this in a theater.
Little did Maximus knew that, in the next life, Commodus becomes THE JOKER!
300, Gladiator, Brave Heart, Troy, Kingdom Heaven man those kingdom and medieval wars gives human spirit and rage
For whatever Gods you believe in, may you forever live long & may your name echo till eternity, the great Hans Zimmer
Still one of my top 10 scenes from a movie!
