To rebut MFJJ there at the end of the video. I went to a collar this year because I was having failures of the carbon directly behind the the insert even with relatively weak aluminum inserts. These failures were predominately from hitting hard objects (rocks and bone) at oblique angles. I guess for me, the collars aren't so much for lethality but for reusability. I know this would take a long time to do but did you tune your bow for each broadhead? I know some can fly differently. Great shooting and thanks for the awesome videos.
Dan the man, I agree 100% ABT Personally I've used 125 griz tricks for going on 6 or 7 years now. The 4x4 bull in my profile pic was shot with them. 1st shot was back liver shot 2nd shot was deflected but went through the spine, not a pass through but was about 16 inches up the shaft! Anyway i got some of the valklry (probably not spelling that right) broadheads this year but they dont fly any better than the griz tricks so to me its not worth the $ to switch over. Good luck to you this season and be safe
A perfectly bareshaft tuned arrow, bow combo should shoot nearly(NEARLY) any broadhead just fine. IF the broadhead spin tests true. Must spin perfectly.
Did u try switching the arrows with the broad heads? In my experience one arrow can shoot a broad head perfect but the next arrow might not. Even if u nock tune them
My son bought these on your recommendation that they are plenty for elk as we hunt NE whitetail. First one today deformed the tip on an upper rib bone 7 yard shot with a low exit. They fly well but we have never encountered a deformed ( bent at about a 60 degree angle) tip on a rib bone. Are they aluminum?
Have you every shot the sevr 100 grain expandable? My first elk hunt is this September and don't know if I should use the sevr which I have success with on javelina and mule deer.
I have actually tan the ethics one piece insert which is essentially the same thing as what you have but 100 grains. I found over time they all bens and ultimately why the insert and sleeve order the most longevity. The stainless do well for a little bit end up wobbling over time as I would pull the insert and install a new on and arrow was perfect again. Maybe you’ll have different results with these.
The iron will heads are great of course, but they are simply too dull out of the box. I understand that it’s a high quality steel, etc...but they need a better edge...especially when they are so many great options out there.
I had a buck move forward right before I shot and I hit him in the hind quarter with a grim reaper hades. He went about 30 yards before he died. Excellent broadheads.
Hey Dan, I've had a lot of people recommend Muzzy Trocar heads, honestly they look very similar and very similar cost, the Grims seem to be backordered right now but Muzzys are available have you ever compared them, thanks!
You gotta use the ballistic collars, bro! They're designed to add structural rigidity in conjunction with the insert. Also, your arrows are gonna look booty without them and you get another 10 grains or so up front.
I'm going with the Ramcat diamondback this year on Victory VAP TKOs. I think next year I'm going to start using 125s but with antelope in 13 days, it's too late to change
Hey bro what are your thoughts on shooting 80lb draw weight? I've been shooting 70lb for years and just bought an elite with 80lb limbs. I have a 27.5 inch draw so I was hoping to at least gain some speed and energy
@@codybabb147 it allows me to shoot heavy arrows faster. Granted I shoot an mx-15 but @27" draw I'm shooting 560gr 275-277 fps. The extra weight with the speed shoots flat and doesn't drop as fast. My person experience it carries momentum better on longer shots.
when you look through your peep sight are you able to see your whole sight housing or does your riser cut it in half. I just got my bow a few days ago and I have the spot Hogg fast Eddie and when I look through my peep I only see half of the housing. Will you or MFJJ talk about this.
I disagree with some of your priorities, but I do understand where you are coming from. However, I do really like the level of scrutiny you give to your training and equipment. I have personally gone with a heavier set up, but much of that is dictated by the components I wanted to use and I am still getting acceptable trajectories. I also, would not call your setup weak or light for the class of animal you are chasing. The problem was the fad about a decade ago of film hunters going after elk with something like a 330gr arrow with inefficient mechanical that rarely passed through even whitetail. While I would likely argue that my setup is "more betterer", I would begrudgingly admit that a hunter armed with a 60+ lbs bow and 475+ gr arrow with a good fixed blade is probably sufficiently armed for elk. (Obvious caveat of hunter's accuracy and proper arrow flight) FYI, I'm running an Easton Axis 340 cut to 27" with a 225 gr single bevel, 50gr Iron Will insert, and 25 gr collar. They come out to about 595gr and I'm pushing them right at 250 FPS. Way too much for the antelope I'm going to be chasing this year, but was building these for hopefully elk next year.
My issue is that at 40 yards my broadhead drop 6". I have tryd to figure out what is going on. The only thing I can think of is my bow shoots way too fast. I am shooting 300fps and my bow is turned down to 65 lbs. Slick tricks seem to work ok and mechanicals work fine and I just bot mussy 1's just recently to try them out too see how they fly. Any suggestions on anything else to try or think of? It's coming down to the wire on hunting season.
They drop 6 inches in relation to your field points? Did you bare shaft tune with field tips for perfect flight to start with? Out to at least 30 yards. 40 is better. Not on a windy day and don't bareshaft with broadheads 😳.
@@montuckyman4982 oh yeah I have done all of it. Shooting bullets with bare shafts and fletchings. Arrows spin perfect too. Mechanicals don't just the fixed. Running 15.5% foc and I don't paper tune broadheads just feild points.
I have a question for you guys. I'm going elk hunting in september and I'll be shooting a 464 grain arrow at 65 lbs. I love to shoot the 1.75 swhacker. What do you think about my arrow set up?
Shoot a sharp fixed blade you have a lot of trust in. Dan will be running the grimreaper microhades 125, I'll be running something similar in a 150. - TC
The Schwacker will have a pretty small entry hole. If you don’t get a pass through, which is possible, you may struggle to find blood. A mechanical dumps energy when it expands, and that will limit your penetration. As Tim or Dan mentioned, a good fixed blade will penetrate better. QAD Exodus, Muzzy Trocar, Grim Reaper Hades, Magnus Black Hornet or Stinger-there’s a lot of options for affordable good broadheads. Let us know what you ended up picking and how your hunt went?
Hey thanks for all the hard work into your videos..this was awesome to help me confirm my choice..I'm out here in alberta if you ever want a different mountain area to hunt..
I hear you but, Iron will baby bleeders are an inch, and that combined with the main blade gives you about 15% MORE cut than a 3-blade Dan. I'm shooting Sevr 1.5 so I honestly don't care what you shoot but I just want you to be aware your math doesn't add up. Not to mention IW always test sharpest out of the box on any testing I've seen anyway. Might be worth revisiting 👍
Just realized that's my second moreso negative comment in two weeks, sorry about that bud think you're doing great stuff overall. it would probably sound better if we were having a discussion rather than in a RUclips comment on its own. 👍
@@montuckyman4982 yep i use the 50grain outsert. These arrows are hammers. I like the selection of 100grain heads. I can shoot a 150grain head to get well over 600grain if i need. I shoot the hha tetra so i can use the spare wheel to change my arrow profile. Cheers
I’ve shot Slick Trick 4 blades and Muzzy Trocar with the offset blades with regular Blazer 3 vanes. The heads physically can not match my vanes, but they fly with field points at 40 yards and more.
His findings are interesting through his research a longer head and very high FOC seem to be the best for getting a pass through. Not necessarily the speed.
Ur theory on the collar is not true in my opinion which doesn’t really mean shit! But, when u say it makes ur arrows longer is not making sense to me. Example: if u have a 27 inch arrow and u used a collar system. All u would have to do is cut ur arrows a little shorter then usually would. Cut whatever the difference is by putting the collar on. And, if I am not mistaken isn’t it true that the shorter u can cut ur arrow the stronger the spin gets??? That’s perfect for FOC. or am I honestly ass backwards in my thinkin? Please; if I am help me out n set me straight so I know, ya know. Thanks for ur time. PEACE! ✌️

when you look through your peep sight are you able to see your whole sight housing or does your riser cut it in half. I just got my bow a few days ago and I have the spot Hogg fast Eddie and when I look through my peep I only see half of the housing. Will you or MFJJ talk about this.
It's common for a riser to cut out a small portion of the sight, if it's truly half of your housing something is off
Awesome video, ABT!
ABT 🤘
(Obvious caveat of hunter's accuracy and proper arrow flight)
FYI, I'm running an Easton Axis 340 cut to 27" with a 225 gr single bevel, 50gr Iron Will insert, and 25 gr collar.
Did you spin test your arrows and heads? Try the heads on another shaft?
awesome awesome video fellas
Why no tooth of the arrow?
Hey bro…did we meet in 051 in Nevada a week ago?
What made you go with the three blade micro hades vs the 4?
Have you or anyone else used GT Kinetic Peirce's and Ramcats?
Hey thanks for all the hard work into your videos..this was awesome to help me confirm my choice..I'm out here in alberta if you ever want a different mountain area to hunt..
send me an IG message Paul @_timconnor we need some canada hunts in the future
do you knock tune the arrows bare shaft ?
What range finder do you run with?
And whitetail at the end of the year 🤙🏼
What sight do you shoot
Watch lusk archery's test videos he like the grim reapers too I believe
Im shooting xtortions with 100gn magnus killlerbee 2 blade. Total 580gn. I like foc. Momentum is key, not kE in my opinion.
You like foc but choose 100 grain head? Do you have a heavy insert or footing system to add weight up front?
@@montuckyman4982 yep i use the 50grain outsert. These arrows are hammers. I like the selection of 100grain heads. I can shoot a 150grain head to get well over 600grain if i need. I shoot the hha tetra so i can use the spare wheel to change my arrow profile. Cheers
Shooting with the bow stand on the limbs?
The Matthews attaches to the limb pocket .it's designed to .shoot with it on
My favorites for years have been Magnus Black Hornet Ser Razors, check ‘em out sometime #ABT!
Do you line up your 3 blade broadheads with your veins?
You don't.. kinda splitting hairs on that. I used to ask the same question
I’ve shot Slick Trick 4 blades and Muzzy Trocar with the offset blades with regular Blazer 3 vanes. The heads physically can not match my vanes, but they fly with field points at 40 yards and more.
Great video...
Annihilator and Annihilator xl
So they don’t shoot like field points he hast to set his bow up to the Broadhead
Well he’s not hunting with field points so ideally, his bow should be set up with his broadheads.
@@MrBanolicious So if he wants to practice he hast to buy another bow because he has his bow set up for hunting. Mr. cheeky guy.
Listen to the new meat meat eater podcast with Dr Ashby. It's awsome to hear the guy talk who we've all been hearing about
His findings are interesting through his research a longer head and very high FOC seem to be the best for getting a pass through. Not necessarily the speed.
@Supercreech obviously you don't watch the outdoor channel haha
Ramcat and Thorn crown.
PEACE! ✌️
I'm assuming they don't want the collar interfering with the arrow rest.
Bought time your cutting it close
Not concerned about penetration but you want an entrance and exit wound? Sounds like penetration which I am totally for. Good hunting this fall.
Noice bro
Kudu broadheads with bleeders all day , second vpa 3 blade non vented
Kudu or ashby
QAD exodus.
too much $$$ for that.
