You do a very good job planning your sessions so it is not luck but planning. That first image of the tree was outstanding and so was that last one. Thanks Guido keep up the good work.

Hi! Great video and tip, but this function actually doesnt affect the raw file. If you import to Lightroom the file is completely unaffected. If you use OM Workspace, the setting comes along with the RAW file, where you can turn it on or off. In camera it only affects JPEG file output. (and also the RAWfile previews which you see onscreen in the camera which is a bit misleadiing unless you use OM Workspace for your editing) Thanks for a very enjoyable video, makes me want to get out there 📷
Thanks for your comment, and you are absolutely right. Some other people also noticed this, so I did some research. When I recorded this video, I used a pre-production model that only used JPG files. Because it was so visible in the menu, I kind of assumed they made it for RAW... In a later video, I mentioned that this was a mistake. Sorry, I caused the confusion. It would be a nice option for the future! It will definitely be a game changer if they can create that feature in RAW. At least, I'm happy, so see that I inspired you to go out more! Thanks for watching and the comment! Grt Guido
Thank you. It's not a 100 percent clear if this trick works on the raw files. Someone stated that the adjustments are only shown in om workspace and not in other editing software. I will look in to it further when I'm back home. Thabks for watching grt guido
I watched this video from Veritasium, a science channel, that luck is a big determinant to success. A lot of landscape photography conditions we chase is somehow related to luck, but we can repeat the plan over and over again until we get the right conditions increasing the chances of being there when that “lucky” moment comes. It’ll come, sooner or later.
I don't know if that is luck when you plan for something carefully and you are persuasive enough to keep going for that one shot. I think that's just called reward for all the effort you've done 🙂 thanks for watching grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater totally get what you’re saying, but for me it’s still related to the concept of chance. You can increase that chance with the forecast and predictions, but if weather still decides to play on you and goes outside expectations, it’s up to the weather gods if one photographer gets it in the 1st try and another photographer on the 100th. The first one is definitely luckier than the other, but doesnt mean they are better 😂
Hello, I have only very recently discovered your channel and found it worthwhile and subscribed, thanks. With regards to your highlight adjustment tip and the need to reset it afterwards, I'd like to offer my tip as an addition to your tip. If you have a custom model set for landscape for example, you can apply that temporary highlight mode and assuming you haven't set your camera to remember changes to the custom mode it will simply reset to your saved custom mode automatically with the highlight function turned off again once you have moved to a different mode or turned your camera off
Welcome to the channel! I'm happy to see you like the videos and images! Good idea to program it in a custom mode! When you use it in A (aperture priority) it does not reset itself when you turn of the camera. I will try using it in a custom mode and see if your tip works! Hey Guido, nice video.
Grt guido
Thanks Guido for showing us that feature! I’ve worked out how to activate it on my OM1 MK1. It will be quite handy. Just went through the manual, it mentions it a few times but doesn’t show how to use it.
There is some discussion if this setting is applied to the raw file or not. I did a couple of tests and noticed a difference but someone else said it made no difference. So I will do some more testing when I am back home. Thanks for watching grt guido
I think that is well spoken. Although I don't like to plan much, the experience tells us what area suits the weather that day and what shot fits that perfectly. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Grt guido
Yeah, iK I doubt to pull this video back, actually. I was very enthusiastic but later I discovered that the changes are not made to the raw file.since they put it so prominent on the back of the camera i assumed it did ( lightroom could not acces the raw files back then ) so I only watched the raw files. Anyway, thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Grt guido
Very good philosophy... There IS some measure of luck, sure (being in the right place at the right time for special light or unusual animal sightings, etc.) but the key word is planning for whatever weather or conditions (or fewer people!) to increase one's odds of capturing those special, unique images. Perseverance DOES make a big difference, of course. Have I kicked myself sometimes for being lazy and not having my gear with me or being lazy and staying in bed? Yesss! I'm only human... lol The best images I've obtained have been because I kept my gear with me, paid attention to weather conditions, then played the proverbial hand of cards that nature dealt. I see the "rushed" mentality in society these days (including visitors I overhear at our National Parks and other sites) and many fail to realize that images (such as your deer and tree image) are a result of patience and being there more than 30 seconds. I use exposure compensation a lot on my E-M1X, of course, but I never did look at this "curves" function you shared. On the E-M1X, it is accessible on the control panel (a box with a diagonal line) and functions in similar fashion to your OM (by default, the front/rear dials control the shadows and highlights, mid-tones are controlled after clicking the "OK" button). Pressing and holding the "OK" button resets it to the flat curve. I shall play with this when I am out to shoot next time, for if it saves it to the .raw file, then that would certainly give one a better starting point when beginning their post-processing. Thanks for sharing!
I guess we are all human. I have to admit that I'm also too lazy sometimes 😅 I always say to myself that I can't miss what I didn't see. So that's why I never look when images are taken on social media because that's when it starts to hurt 😅 people often see photography as taking a simple image. I'm totally OK with that and am not going to explain myself anymore. But like you say, a lot of time goes into an image. Possibly multiple trips and lots of planning. I didn't know the feature was also on the em1x. I sold mine 6 months ago, but in the 3 years I used it, I've noticed this, haha. I've been using it more and more very useful from time to time. Thank you for watching and your comment. I really appreciate it that you took the time to write that! Grt guido
Ah, just forgot. I use the function you described actually quite a lot. I use it in conjunction with the Grainy Film Art filter. This filter looks standard like Tri-X film if I am correct, but by changing the highlights and shadows you can make it look like a completely different film like for instance Agfa APX (the original film, not the modern version). So handy!
That sounds like a great experiment! Do you shoot in raw or jpg and are the adjustments you make also saved in those files? There is some debate whether or not the information is actually saved to the files. Thnx Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater I shoot in RAW but using an Art filter automatically means a JPG file is created. The highlight and shadow adjustment is saved in both the JPG and RAW file.
Great video Guido, I think your skill and preparation along with your perseverance mean you have more success. Thanks for taking the time to make this 👍

I wonder why this feature (19:00) is not promoted more - I've not seen it on other cameras, and it doesn't seem to be mentioned in other OMS videos. The manual is very brief about it. I much prefer it to Live GND which takes time to process and can look artificial in real landscapes. Thank you for demonstrating it.
There was some debate about this feauture ij the comments weather or not it would work on a raw file. Some mentioned that nothing changed in the raw file and only in the jpg. For as far as I tested, it did change the raw file, but I still have not double-checked it properly to make sure it worked as I mentioned. Hopefully, I will be able to do that soon! So before you start celebrating I would test it first 😅 who knows you will see the outcome on the channel soon. Thanks for watching and your comment. grt guido
@boboneill1828 That's exactly what I experienced, and so I shared this tip, but then people got their doubts. So I'm happy to see that I wasn't telling anything stupid here. Bu the way I was just as surprised as you were that there isn't an official announcement on this feature. I asked my ambassador contacts here in the netherlands, and they didn't even know about it. Try combining this with the live nd or gnd filter and you can crazy dynamic range results. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@@GuidoVanDeWater I'm sorry I deleted my earlier reply after I did a test with jpeg (artificial light) last night and the effect shows clearly in the jpeg but not the raw file. Very disappointing 😥 I willI was hoping it would give a small increase in dynamic range without the artefacts of HDR. It's just another "computational" feature that I will probably never use. I'll stick to my polariser and post processing. The manual should be more clear about the limitations, and not simply add it to exposure compensation which does affect raw files. I going out this morning so I'll try again with landscapes but I am not hopeful.
@@GuidoVanDeWater I did a trial today, saving both raw and LSF. Unfortunately I found that only the LSF files showed any effect, the raw files were unaltered. On processing the images I could get much better results from the raw files. The feature seems only to apply a curves filter when saving, with the potential of increasing shadow noise. I don't see the point of having a feature which has the potential to give an enhanced dynamic range, then saving it to an 8bit jpeg.
I did some testing also, and i found exactly the same results. I also looked at the files that were Initualy tested this on. I'm actually wondering if this feauture has been out programmed with the first firmware upgrade. If I look at those first images from months ago, I can clearly see a difference. I have no idea what I did then and how it worked, but it definitely isn't working on the raw files anymore now. Who knows, we will get an upgrade someday with this feauture installed to raw. I would love to use it again. Thanks for sharing your experience. I will male a video soon where I share this new info. Sorry for the disappointing result. Grt guido
I consider myself still at a level that 80% of my photos are made with pure luck. Or I am just a very lucky boy 🙂. For instance, a few days ago I walked to a pond because I had seen a beautiful blueish frog. As I approached the pond it jumped under water. No frog photo for me. When I walked around the pond I found nymphs of the Libellula Depressa and some just hatched males. Got home with nice photos but I was just lucky once again.
That sounds like a great morning you had there! Although I don't feel it that much anymore, I do think that those lucky moments are the best in photography. Even when the shot isn't that good, that moment will stay with you. Thanks for watching grt guido
Thanks Guido, I turned the exposure box on but I can't turn it off. It says Reset OK Hold but if I touch the box it doesn't go away. If I press OK it doesn't go away.
If you go into the diagram you have to hold the ok button for 2 seconds or so to reset it. Good thing to remember is that the diagram settings are only applied to the jpg files and not to the raw files. Thanks for watching grt guido
20:45. No, that’s a nice shot. It could be even better if you had a more textured sky or better light to work with, but that’s where luck (and your perseverance) come in. Thanks for pointing out that exposure compensation feature. It looks interesting, but is there a specific advantage to doing that in-camera as opposed to post-production in Lightroom?
Well the changes are made to the raw file as file as I noticed. It at least gives you the feeling that it happened in the field. I always like it more when I get home with an image I really like even before editing it. Thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater I feel the same, and have been experimenting with the Live GND filter for that reason. I guess it would depend on how much time I would have to set that up, and remember to reset it once I’m done.
If you just get out once a week or soo, you can not expect always the best you hoped for, I am lucky I mam located near the Harbour in Manila, Usually I shot white Egret, Night Herons and Whiskered Terns, those you would see every , even you don' get out often, but when starting to go nearly every morning before work, I discovered there a Swallows, Yellow Bulbul and Black Winged Stilt . The more you go out the luck will come to you.
We make our own luck! Or at least when can increase the chance for more luck by going out more and more. Also your experience grows so you know what your doing and it doesn't feel like a lucky shot in terms of settings. Sounds like a stunning place we're you live! First comment from the Philippines as far as I know 🙂 thanks for watching grt guido
There is a software update coming later this year for the om-1 that should fix the problem. I have to say that I never noticed it myself so I can't say if it's better on the mk2 or after the software update. I hope that will solve your issue. Grt guido
I can’t find any information about the adjustable highlight and shadow control in the manual more than the symbol and that you can set it on a multi functional button. But nothing about how it works. The big question is if works on raw files or only jpeg?
I tried that and this is saved to the raw file. It doesnt even save a jpg as far as i noticed.Like when using the gnd filter or live nd the camera does not even save a jpg when using this tool. There is indeed info on this feature I just came across it by accident. You even use it at the same time as your live gnd filter. So you can darken the sky and at the same time use this tool to light up the foreground. Surprising results for me untill now. But don't forget to reset it. It already fooled me a couple of times. Thanks for watching grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater I did some test now with 3 different curves and its applied to the raw file when you study the raw file in OM Workspace but when I import them to Lightroom the effect is gone and they all look the same???
@pernorgren hmm that's something I have to test. I actually looked in om workspace to see if there was a difference but didn't look if the difference was visible in Lightroom. I just processed the images that looked best. I will start testing that soon. I recently also noticed that lightroom can't process the high ress tripod shots from the om1mk2. It just says it can't import the files. But when I do a handheld high res it can be imported in lightroom. Strange might be a lightroom issue
@@GuidoVanDeWater I tested now also in DXO Photolab and the same result as in Lightroom. They all look the same after import. The strange thing is that in both Lightroom and Photolab in preview before import they are different but after import they look the same. I also tested to export them as JPG and they look the same in both LR & PL but in OM they are different so same result after export. very strange???
I have to examine that when I get back home. It appears that the difference is only vissible in om workspace (both raw and jpg). Once you start editing the files in lightroom the adjustments are gone according to some viewers so it's not really clear why that happens. Grt guido
I know i can do without but there are multiple reasons why i still use one. It's easier to fine-tune my compositions and the most importantly, try filming yourself and holding the camera and showing what you are doing. It's just impossible. I sometimes actualy bring 2 tripods. One for the video camera and one for the camera. Makes it much easier to make a decent video. And the photo quality doesn't get worse by it. Grt guido

Grt guido
Thank you

@ Good as I don’t use jpg files. Thanks. But I still have the exposure box but it is set to normal exposure.
Strange that it doesn't go away. Should work like that.
I use auto-focus regularly on my OM-1, could they finish fixing that?
There is a software update coming later this year for the om-1 that should fix the problem. I have to say that I never noticed it myself so I can't say if it's better on the mk2 or after the software update. I hope that will solve your issue. Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater Too little too late. Guido. I can't believe how they have acted so stupidly.
There is a saying “the more you practice the luckier you get!”
Thanks gerry, that Is deffinitly true! So I will just go out more 🙂 grt guido
Is this function only on om1 mk2 or on mk2 to?
Good question I just checked an om-1 and the function is not on it. So it appears to be mkii only.
@@GuidoVanDeWater Maybe you used 14-bit for highres shot and LR can't handle that? DXO recently added support for 14-bit files for OM1 MK2.
just fore the jpg? not raw
I have to examine that when I get back home. It appears that the difference is only vissible in om workspace (both raw and jpg). Once you start editing the files in lightroom the adjustments are gone according to some viewers so it's not really clear why that happens. Grt guido
WHY do you use a Tripod?...
Grt guido
