Yes, agreed, 12-40 f2.8 I also, as an amateur, use mostly. Then 40-150 mm f 2.8, 300 mm f4, and macro 60 mm. As a pensioner, I do not have the finances to upgrade to the OM 1, but must be satisfied with the Olympus em1 mark II. For flying birds, you have to work hard to find focus. Otherwise, this old camera works perfectly
That sounds like a great set you have there. The bird detection gets better on the newer cameras, but to get flying birds in focus is a challenge with any camera. I struggle with it from time to time. I don't do birds enough these days, so I really need to practice again when I do it. Thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment. Keep enjoying that camera system you have there 😊 grt guido
@chetanunindracusin664 There is not much difference between the om-1 and the om-1mk2. The live gnd is a nice feature, and for the rest, everything just got a little bit better. I would not upgrade the om-1 but if you want to upgrade one of your older cameras I would definitely choose the om-1 mk2.
Thank you so much for your careful review of the oly lenses and your personal feelings. I had to laugh when you described and showed your pack because, except for the big white zoom, mine is exactly the same! I have not really gotten the hand of my 100 to 400 lens and you may have explained why. I am often using it at 400 which may explain the softness in my recent bird photos. Thank you for that. I will keep it below 300 and use my 2x teleconverter for the longer reach when I need it. Such a joy to have this camera system as I can carry it up mountain sides and still have room for a lunch.
An excellent discussion of all these lenses (I have several of them) and making the point of using the right lens for the occasion, and how you can get a so much kit into a bag with Micro Four Thirds. One lens which you didn't mention, and probably not a good fit for landscapes, is the 40-150mm f4 PRO. It is so small relative to it's f2.8 big brother, but still delivers extremely sharp images wide open. I do a lot of motorcycle travel where space is at a premium and the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO and the 40-150mm f4 PRO pack so small but cover such a range with superb image quality. Thank you.
I actually bever tried the f4 version of the 40-150 but that is because I would never trade my 2.8 but you have a solid point there. Seen amazing reviews especialy for such a small lightweight lens. That's the whole power of the system tha ability to take great equipment with you even when you have to travel light like you do on the motorcycle. Thanks for watching and your comment! Grt guido
The minimal focal distance with om system / olympus lenses is usually very close so most lenses are perfect for clos up shots. I also shot some ice cones with the 40-150 in sweden looked like macro shots. Thanks for watchibg. Grt guido
Great video, I haven't tried many of the lenses you have there, but your final choice is close to my set. 150.400 most used, with 12.100 and 60macro .they cover most things I need.
That is a great setup covers the complete focal range for 98 percent of my shots 🙂 you're o lying missing the extreme wide angle but like I said I hardly ever use that in the netherlands. Thanls for watchibg. Grt guido
I recently purchased the 12-200mm and even though it doesn't have excellent quality I love its versatility, very light weight and compactness. An ideal lens for travel and street photography.
I've actually never tried that lens. The focal range is fantastic, but I always felt that the aperture at 200mm was a bit to high for my taste. But it is small and lightweight so for travels I totally understand your idea. Maybe in a few years when I decide to downsize even further 😅 thanks for watchibg and your comment!
Hi Guido, You've got some really nice glass there. Have you considered: 12-45 f4 pro and 40 - 150 f4 pro ( would be a considerable weight saving in your bag ). You mentioned your very long lens is a tad soft, I own all the denoising software but find DXO pure raw is outstanding for this kind of problem as they calibrate for each lens individually and you can test it out free. Take care, Martin 👍
I've heart great story's about dxo but I am very comfortable with lightroom. It's is a bit soft but I can always solve it with lightroom or topaz Sharpen. I know the f4 lenses are lighter but I am very happy with the 2.8 version so I see no need to sell them. Thanks for watching grt guido
My favourite at the moment is the 40-140 f4 pro. So small and so sharp. So much fun to take with me when I'm out with the dogs. Also a favourite for me is 45 1.2 pro. Best image quality on MFT imho (together with 75 1.8).
I agree that the 45mm 1.2 is a fantastic sharp lens. The only problem that I have with it is that I don't like using it for my landscape photography. I always struggle with primes and I just love thenflexibility of zoom lenses. Can't say I really have a favorite lens I just love the fact that I can take all these focal ranges and photograph whatever comes to my eye. Thanks for watching and your comment! Grt guido
I shoot mainly wildlife, my favourite lens used to be the 300mm it is so sharp, but now i have the 150-400 mm ,that hardly ever leaves my camera .. i had the 7-14 but found it too wide for me but i needed something for the occasional landscape so i went for the 8-25mm im very pleased with it , and like you love the weight of the system
I get what you mean. Since I have the 150-400 on loan, I don't even take the 300 with me anymore. Unfortunately I will have to return the 150-400 😟 inhear a lot hood things about the 8-25. I never used the 7mm like i said in the video, but that was untill last night. Shot a lot of images with it all of a sudden 😅 thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment! Grt guido
Great, I agree with you and like to take the 12-40 pro and the 40-150 pro even if the 12-100 is a swiss knife.... I add the 14 mm converter... The fishye 8 mm is a great fun too. Thanks for your video
I'm happy to see you liked the video. It's a great system and it gives you very flexible possibilities. Where are you from? Thanks for watching grt guido
@fernandevaudan7774 ah that's great! Love your country I'm actualy spending a couple of days there in a couple of week on my way to tuscany. We're staying in interlaken again just like last year 🙂
Haha, that's is amazing right! 3 lenses in your pockets witch other camera systems can do that 😅 I always say you can't use what you can't take with you and that definitely applies for m43 it makes much more flexible photographers. We can photograph all kinds of subjects without planning in front. Just go with the flow because we can photograph all those possibilities with the lenses we can bring. Thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
The Olympus pro lenses are very affordable compared to Pro grade FF. Right now my wish list includes an E-M1.3, 12-100, and possibly the 8mm f/1.8 fisheye. I think with nice used gear I'm looking at around $1800 usd or basically the same price as a single RF L series lens.
Your looking at a quality set if you manage to buy that second hand. Hopefully you will find it for even less money. Sometimes I find real cheap stuff online but indeed compared to FF it's all way more affordable. Thabks for watching grt guido
Grt guido
Great content and informative advice from a pro. Asking what lens etc is like asking what’s your favorite food or item of clothing… depends. Look forwards to more.
That's exactly what I meant. It depends on the subject and it will be different for every photographer. For me, it's just the flexibility to do whatever I want with those lenses. I can shoot the whole focal range from 7 to 500 and even 1000 with teleconvrters and even macro. That is what makes these lenses unique, in my opinion. Thanks for watching. I appreciate the comment! Grt guido
I see a lot of people switching when they get older due to the weight and size difference. But I think there js just more to it than myself. I only see advantages here. Thanks for watching grt guido
That look in your eyes when holding the 150-400. True love 😁 I have to agree with everything you say. My 12-40 Pro is almost always on the camera and I always have the 40-150 and 1.4TC with me. I also have the 60mm but rarely use it. I've been debating either the 300 or 100-400 and your video has cleared up the debate for me. I need to get the 300. First time I've watched one of your videos. Subscribed!
Welcome to the channel! It is indeed true love, and I feel very privileged that I'm allowed to use a lens like that. It sounds like you have a great set of lenses there. Just to clear something about the 300 or 100-400. For me, it would totally depend on what you are photographing. If you are in to wildlife and birds then the 300 is amazing. If you are more of a random photographer like me that photographer everything on its path then the 100-400 might be a better choice. From a landscape perspective I prefer the focal range of the 100-400 but the sharpnes of the 300. But to get a landscape exactly right for a 30p shot is very difficult. So it's a very difficult choice that totally depends on what I would photograph. That's why I love the big white one. That lens had the best of the other 2 combined. So the question is what do you photograph? Where are you from? Sorry im always interested in were people are watching from 😊 thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts here! Grt guido
This is very well stated and tends to match the feelings of others that use the Olympus/OM system. My dad began shooting Olympus eons ago (I think during the 1980's), ultimately shooting professionally with 4/3 when moving over from the 35mm cameras. When I began shooting again around 2007, I really didn't think twice about buying Olympus kit, either, and it paid for itself many times over. Now I'm using the E-M1X for mostly landscapes and wildlife, with a few other subjects tossed in for good measure. I find that the 12-40mm f2.8 tends to stay on the camera the most and it's simply a solid workhorse. I DO use the 7-14mm f2.8 frequently, though, for I am most often shooting in the northern Great Plains and northern US Rockies regions with a lot of very open vistas (though it does come in very handy for more isolated subjects, as well). The 100-400mm is always with me, too, for the handheld performance available due to the stabilization is very, very good. My next addition will be the 40-150mm f2.8 to round out the usual "trilogy" but I'm going to bypass the 60mm macro and hold out for obtaining the 90mm macro instead. That 150-400 mm would be a VERY nice addition to my bag, though, I must admit! :))) I thought about other systems, sure, but I just can't justify buying into larger/heavier/more expensive systems when the end result truly depends upon the person behind the camera. I remember my dad scoffing at the pixel-peepers long ago and I suppose I do the same. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the gear... I look forward to visiting some of your other videos, as well.
Thanks, it always makes me happy to see other kong time olynpus users 🙂 I had the same. My dad owned an olympus trip during the 80s, and that was the reason why I bought my first dslr, the analogue om-30. Never looked back, and I never bought a different brand. Sp10, sp30, e520, e3, em1, em1x, om1 and now om-mk2 haha to many cameras when I look at it now hahaha. Where do you live? Thanks for watching and your comment l! I really appreciate it that you took the time to write such a long message 🙂 grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater You're quite welcome. I enjoyed watching the outing. I live in northwest North Dakota near the borders of Montana and Canada where spring is only now on the verge of beginning. I began in digital by borrowing one of my dad's E-1's, then bought an E-510 to begin doing aerial photography that he did not have time to do anymore. I was still shooting 4/3 until I bought the E-M1X (over 50k shutter cycles on the E-510, so I was looong overdue to upgrade! lol) and now hope to turn this into my retirement work.
@johnniewelbornjr.8940 sounds like a great location to live. So Theodore rosevelt national park is on your door step. Must be amazing to live near those great planes it's been on my wishlist to visit wyomibg, montana and north dakota. Great planes, mountains and wildlife. What more could i wish for? Who knows some day... grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater Yes, I moved here from Tennessee (beautiful in its own way but now overpopulated) and have come to love this region. I frequently shoot in the badlands of TRNP, for it's a park that is rarely crowded with people. Wyoming, Montana and both of the Dakotas have many isolated places to shoot that are incredible.
The white lens is the dream. The rest are more accessible to most people. It's nice it exists, but I'm not sure how anyone can afford one. I tend to use the 12-100 more than anything. The 12-40 is good, but it's not as versatile. So unless I need the extra stop of light gathering, I'll use the longer zoom. The 40-150 is amazing and sharper than about any lens I've used. Even with the 2x tc it does very well. I shot photos of the eclipse with that setup, and I was able to capture sunspots. I can only wish I'd had the 150-400, but again, one can dream. Thanks for sharing your experience, Guido. As usual, your thoughts are informative and insightful.
I cab only say just keep dreaming! I did the same and i never thought that I would ever get to the level were I owned all this stuf and was able to borrow such an amazing lens. Or that i would have a weekly youtube channel were I visit all kinds of amazing locations. Or have lots of subscribers that support what i do. But somehow all those dreams slowly developed into reality. Sometimes i still feel like I'm dreaming with my eyes open. As long as you put you hart and soul into something then I'm confinced you can do anything you want. But i also had a lot of luck. But you have to make you're own luck partly i guess. Thanks for watching and i hope your dreams will become reality someday! Grt guido
Hi Guido. I own the G9 and G9 II. I do a lot of bird photos and landscape as well. The lens I use the most for wildlife is the pana 100-400mm + 1.4TC. I solved the problem of direction of zoom ring. I just pull or push on the extending portion of the zoom. That also takes care of the tightness of the zoom ring and it is very fast. But if I know I might also get the chance to do some proxi macro, I use the Olympus 40-150mm f 2.8 Pro lens. It is the sharper lens by far and is my favorite lens as it give the best IQ. I hope to add the 300mm f4 Pro if I can find a used one at a reasonable price. Great description of versatility of mft systems. Get better soon. :))
That's a good solution to just pull on the lens. I never use that technique maybe I should try it sometime. The 40-150 is an incredible lens. If I could only go out with 1 lens I think it would be that one. The 300f4 is great I was lucky i find a used one for bargain. But since I have the 150-400 on loan I haven't touched it at all. Buy when the 150-400 goes back ( I'm afraid eventually it will go back ). I'm sure I will start using it again. Its by far the sharpest lens that I have ever used. Thanks for watching and your comment. Younhave a great diverse set of lenses there! Grt guido
Thank you. And I thibk that everyone has a different taste depending on what your favorite subject is. For me the flexibility makes it great. Thanks for watchibg. Grt guido
Awesome video. Last year I decided to get back into photography and chose an EM10.3 with the pancake 12-42 & 40-150r because one day I wanted to eventually be able to build such a versatile kit. Recently added an EM1.2 with 12-40 and I can still fit all of that together in a medium shoulder bag with room to spare. It's actually tough finding a small enough bag for just the EM1, 12-40 & 40-150r so I can throw it in my work bag and keep it with me daily.
That is the biggest power of this system. All hat power that brings the ability to adapt to almost everything is just in one tiny bag. That's why I love it so much. Happy to see you are enjoying it to and that you got back in phorograohy. Thanks for watching the video grt guido
Great video , thank you. I came across it because I’m researching whether to get back into m4/3. I bought the EM5mkII when it was new and it came with the 12-40mm f2.8 pro. Fantastic lens. I was primarily a landscape photographer and didn’t shoot very often so I couldn’t remember how I’d set the camera up, became frustrated with the user interface and moved to a system with analogue style dials. I also felt that the lens was overkill for my needs and it was too big to sit comfortably on a PD clip on my backpack shoulder strap. My current system has much smaller lenses, is heavier but has a huge megapixel sensor that can easily crop to more than 80mm equivalent. No IBIS though and I miss that. Can you think of a smaller lens with similar reach that’s good enough for a hobbyist like me who just doesn’t need a lens as good as the 12-40?
Thanks for watching and sharing your comment. Here are a couple of lenses in that focal range that are made fot a lower budget. So they aren't as good as the 12-40 f2.8 but still very decent lenses. They are smaller and just a stop less in quality. If you don't mind a prime look at the 12mm f2.0 I own that lens and it extremely small and razor sharp! I only use it for star photography. You can also look at the 14-42 f3.5-5.6II if you want some zooming ability. I've never used that one myself but I've talked to people that were very happy with it. Grt guido
Great and informative video 😁 that’s a whole lot of gear. I share similar thoughts, I tend to use the 24-70 (full frame equivalent) the most myself because it’s just a generic range. I love my wides and telephoto, but lately have been carrying them a lot less 😅 every single time I dont bring them, I wished I did!
Now it makes me wonder why you don't bring them... is that a weight issue then? I think that is the whole advantage of this system I don't have to make that decision. Thanks for watching grt guido
It was nice to watch this video, to find out your opinion about the lenses. I did not saw a fisheye in your kit. What about a fisheye ? Did you tried it ? I always take the fisheye with me, it's one of the most used lenses. When I started using it it opened new perspectives, new ways of doing landscapes. And I am a wildlife photographer.
Honestly, I have never owned a fish eye. I tried one on a photo fair once, and my first thought was... what the f... and until today, I don't see any use for it 😅 I do admire people who use it. You have to have a great imagination ability to see shots with a lens like that. Maybe I should take one for a longer period and nust try it I have no idea. Thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
Yes, the fisheye is that kind of lens which you like or not (not all people like it). Maybe it is not for you, but you can give it a second try. All the best !
Grt guido
Thanks Guido. Helpful video (although I was nervous watching the 150-400 near the edge of the table 🤣). I have the 12-40, 40-150 and the 100-400 lenses. Could you clarify one thing you said near the start (2:16) of your video please? - I think you said that the 100-400 IS works with the camera body but I thought that although IS in camera and lens can be left on, they don't synch (like they do with the 40-150 for example). Kind regards
Yes that is correct it's not a sync is with the olympus 100-400 but the camera decides witch is it uses. So it can be the lens or the body but not at the same time. You can indeed leave them both on. With the Panasonic it's only the lens stabilisation. And in my opinion the stabilisation of the okympus lens only was also way better. And yeah the 150-400 was on the edge. Of course that one wasn't mine would not risk it with my own 😅🤪 thanks for watching. Grt guido
Nice video. Thanks for your review! I especially appreciated your comment about adding IS to the 40-150 MM. I actually would like to see them extend the reach to 200MM. Panasonic has clearly seen the advantage of adding IS to their updated 50-200 lens paired with the G9 Mk 2. I like the Panasonic 100-300mm Mk2 (IS) zoom as a very lightweight option. It isn't s a pro lens but very lightweight for travel for extra reach and worthwhile considering and not expensive if you are traveling on a vacation and concerned about theft, etc.
Thanks for watching and your comment. Some helpful tips about the Panasonic equipment. There are rumours of a 50-200 f2.8 from om system but these rumours have been there for a long time so might be a hoax 😅 grt guido
Welcome to the channel! I'm happy to see you like the videos. Florida wow, I wish we could borrow some of you're sunshine 🙂 thanks for watching and your comment I appreciate it! Grt guido
I'd definitely have to say the 300mm f4 is my favourite. Not my most used, but my favourite. I had a Lumix 45-200 lens for years, but kept meaning to upgrade to the Lumix 300mm. A series of moments happened where I wished I had more reach and better IQ, so I finally went to buy that lens, only to find it was discontinued! I went for the Oly 300mm instead - the quality blew me away and opened the door (or should I say, gave me a lot of GAS) for Olympus and OM products. I got the 1.4x teleconverter for the 300mm, very nice! The 12-40 PRO II came as a kit lens with my OM-1, and it's criminally underused. My main focus is on wildlife, with a new interest in street photography, so I tend to choose from among my wider lenses according to portability (usually one of the popular Lumix lenses), rather than sheer quality. I need to change that, it's too good a lens to sit idle in a drawer! I keep hearing good things about the 40-150 PRO. I thought that'd be a great zoom backup for the 300mm, but after spending too much on gear, and hearing about the new 50-200 (or 250?) coming from OM, I'm holding back. In the meantime I stumbled across an Oly 4/3 50-200 for a decent price, complete with adapter. Nice lens, but I agree with what you say here - the 4/3 gear is heavy! I haven't weighed them both, but it feels like I doubled up on the 300mm, when I take them both out. I may buck the trend of youtube commenters and get the 150-600. I don't expect it to replace the IQ of my 300mm, but the reach is tempting. Though considering the price, I'm looking about for a used 2x teleconverter first, to see what 600mm feels like. The 150-400 is right out. 😄 The price has scrubbed out most feelings of envy and FOMO in me - this lens is just a thing that happens to _other_ people. GAS has it's limits!
If you want to see what 600mm looks like try the in-camera 2x digital converter, you may be pleasantly surprised! Unlike the the optical converter you also retain the f/4 maximum aperture of the 300mm lens.
That is indeed a smart way to see what 600mm looks like. But the image quality suffers a lot from the in body converter ( it's purely a digital enlargement and therfor you loose half of the pixels ). Ut to get a feeling of what 600 looks like it's a great idea!
I can tell you that there is no lens as sharp as that 300mm f4. After that comes that 150-400 and after that the 150-600. Until now, I have only seen positive reviews of it, including myself. The 50-200 is an amazing quality lens but indeed very heavy and it has a very slow auto focus compared to the modern day lenses. There 50-250 are all rumours untill now. As far as I know nothing is confirmed but might be worth the wait if it ever comes. Thanks for watching! Grt guido
Guido, I bet you can’t return that 150-400 pro. I’ll happily follow your advice to re-enter this hobby after selling my Nikon D700 full frame kit, with the OM-1 mkii 12-40 and 40-150 f2.8. But, my oh my that 150-400 just tics all boxes a nature and wild photographer can dream off. Just like the Nikkor 600 mm f4 x1.4 but then half the size, half the weight, half the cost and with a very useful internal zoom. Yes 7.5k is easier said than justified to the spouse but I recon she can see the possibilities and quality too. My wife hates me for watching the 150-400 pro reviews, but had to admit that the pictures of taken with that lens by the natures and wildlife OM System ambassadors are nothing else but stunning. 😅
Don't forget that the 150-400 also has a built-in 1.25 teleconverter that you can switch on and of. So technically, it's a 150-500, and then you can also add a 1 4 or 2.0 teleconverter. So that is a full frame equivalent of 2000 mm! Absolute insane as far as I noticed the 1.25 built-in has no effect on image quality. You only lose a stop of light. Tested it its the 2.0 converter and found the images to be very good but still need to do more testing. Hope I convinced your wife now 😅 that it's a lot of money, but it is worth every penny. There is just nothing like it out there on the marked. Thanks for watching. I hope you can pick up your hobby again 😊 grt guido
Totally agree with you. You could say the 12-100 is better for a shoot anything walk around lens, but the 12-40 is just amazing. Would never trade it for anything. Make sure you keep that pen f these thing are popular and worth a lot of money these days. Might become a collectors item when they are in good shape. Thanks for watching grt guido
There are many people waiting in line for the rare loaners ;-) so, hope you already had the chance to send it back. Love the selection / also love the 40-150 f2.8 However, there clearly is a 100 - 300 f 2.8-4 missing in the line-up
Haha this lens is actualy from om system in the netherlands so it's probably not one that will be rented out 😅 but as far as I know I have to return it at the end of this month. 100-300 would be great or a 12-200 or something like that. But I'm satisfied with what I have right now 🙂 thnx for watching. Grt guido
No, I'm very impressed by the 8-25, but I'm not sure if I want to trade it for the 7-14. I have to test one out for a longer period. I would never trade the 12-40, that's for sure. I love that thing. But I've seen lots of great reviews of the 8-25 and my own experience when I was at photo fairs testing it was also very good, so who knows someday... thanks for watching. Grt guido
Totally agree. a lot of my images are with that lens. I also like the 8-25, but then I miss a part until 40 mm where I do shoot lots of images. The mkii has a bit better coating, but indeed, there are probably lots of great second-hand options out there. thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
Hey Guido, I've got the exact same setup as you. I lean more towards bird and wildlife photography, with a fair share of landscape shots too. The white lens is just too pricey for me. Even if I were to sell my 300mm pro and the Oly 100-400mm, it'd still be a stretch to afford it. One thing I don't entirely agree with is that, apart from the Olympus lenses, I also own a couple of Panasonics. Among them, the Leica 100-400mm stands out as my favorite. I prefer its stabilization set to the lens only, and it's still remarkably effective. Plus, it's more compact, lighter than the Oly 100-400mm, and entirely metal instead of plastic. But, as they say, to each their own. Here's a tip: Your Oly 7-14mm, I also don't find myself using it much. So, I opted for the 9-18mm, which is pocket-sized. Sure, it's 9mm and not 7mm and not waterproof, but 12mm to 9mm is already a big difference, and how often do you really shoot in the rain? Anyway, all the best from Belgium ! Regards, Marc
You have a nice setup there then. Indeed opinions vary a lot specialy for the Panasonic and olympus 100-400. I was just never satisfied with the Panasonic. I've heard good story's about that 9-18mm from Panasonic. But I think I will just keep the 7-14. It was a big investment and I don't think I want to spend more money on it now 😅 Thanks for watching and your comment. Appreciate it that you took the time to write such a large comment! Grt guido
That's probably the best way to represent the case for MFT, although there are many photographers for whom the argument wouldn't be persuasive for the simple reason that they don't shoot the sort of variety that you are drawn to. It's a great feeling though to be stepping out knowing that, whatever you encounter, you've got the gear on hand (well, i have - you seem to be a bit light as i heard no mention of the Fisheye!). Have a great day, man - looking forward to your postings. PS - this talk about the 150-400 being expensive. First, it's a lot of money. But second, is it a lot of money for what it enables - is it 'expensive' for purpose and utility? I'd say no. I'd say we're lucky it can be made at any price (regardless of whether i can afford it or not). I'd also refer people to past realities of Olyworld, like the 300 f/2.8 which came out in 2003 with a list of US8k - which in 2023 $ is 13.5k! That's expensive, but hand-built legends are (i've not calculated the price of the old Bigma in 2023 $, but i suspect it's not far off 30k). End of Rant. Cheers.
You are definitely right about the price bot being expansive, but if you don't have the money available, then it's too expensive for me. If you look at other brands' similar lenses, then this lens is a bargain! Last Saturday, I did a lecture in a camera store, and I was stunned by the prices of similar lenses. And then I'm not talking about the massive size and weight? If you can compare the whole system with ff equivalents then you are thousands of dollars cheaper with the same quality. And then you gain that flexibility that I love so much. All in all a fantastic system! Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater This lens in New Zealand is NZ$12k... about the same price as a 35mm 1.4 Summicron, and half the price of a fast Noctilux 50mm. Using Leica as the baseline, which is reasonable given that so many people would love to strut around with an M to dangle on their wrist or casually place on a cafe table, what would a 150-400/500 Leica tele be priced at?😅😅😅
@@GuidoVanDeWater No experience, but my hunch would be a bit of both. Reasoning: it's been around a long time, occupying a special place in the market and the aspirations of photographers. The price point that that has enabled (+ relative scarcity) means that products can, in principle, be built without particular regard for market price - a vision of 'quality' is not compromised by the willingness and ability of a small group - made up primarily of dentists - to pay. If this thesis is true(ish), then Leica are in a sweet spot. I'd sum it up as 'Nobody, not even Leica, make a better Leica than Leica!'
It's difficult to let you hear the sound because it all depends on how close the microphone is, how loud the volume of recording is and how loud you are playing the video. I think it's not loud and you can always use the silent shutter. Best thing you can do is actually listen to one in real life. The closest camera store will probanly havr one. Thanks for watchibg. Grt guido
I still have my doubts if it's worth switching to the 90mm from the 60 that I have. I would really have to commit ro more macro to justify the extra money. Don't know if I'm willing to do that. Thanks for watching grt guido
Grt guido
While I do have other Oly lenses, my GOTO lenses are: 60/2.8 macro... 12-45/f4 Pro... 40-150/2.8... 150-400/4.5... (I also always have my 25/1.8 in the bag but rarely use it.)
Sounds like a great kit that can give you a real flexible approach to your photography. I hope I can that 150-400 as my own lens some day 😅 thanks for watching grt guido
Do you use DXO pure raw Or some other similar software program to improve image quality when shooting high ISO, what do you recommend to use when editing OM system files.
I only use Lightroom for my edits and sometimes a little photoshop for focus stacking or a clone removal tool. I've seen good stories about dxo but I'm very comfortable in my lightroom chair and I don't see myself leaving it soon. The Ai noise tool in Lightroom works great. Use it on almost all of my images at the moment as the high iso once. Thanks for watching, and your comment appreciate it. Grt guido
For me the 12-40 is the lens I use most and the 40-150 f2.8 the 60mm is sharp but feels and focus poor. 1.4 convert great x2 not as sharp 300mm f4 great but I struggle with the weight But the but is still 20mp and other brands have upped the game am `thinking Fuji but the best range of lenses is for sure olympus
I agree in you're take here 🙂 I personally don't see the advantage of going to a different brand for more mega pixels. I often hear people say that they need more mega pixels so they can crop there images. I hardly ever crop an image because the lenses are just really great and I can zoom to the exact composition. If I see a shot that I want as a 1x1 or 16x9 I just huse the high res function. But who knows if there is going to be a new top model maybe they will increase it a bit like the Panasonic. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater I do worry i have been olympus for 10 years and have a big lens collection I do find the hi-res mode great but look at 40mp as the new normal should I jump now as my kit is working quite a lot and if OMS do not progress will be like an old PC . the very long lens extreme macro is not for me better files are I did shoot 6x6cm film for that reason at a3 and above 20mp is starting to show its age, love the olympus lenses but evolution is moving on. thanks for the video.
It surprises me that nobody has made a 400mm prime for MFT yet. The zooms are great, but both the PL and the Olympus 100-400 are quite soft at 400mm, to the point where the 200mm f2.8 and the 300mm f4 are sharper cropped. Most of my wildlife shots are cropped to at least 400mm. Sure, ideally I'd find a way to get closer, but that's not always easy or dignified. 😔
I do agree with you that the 100-400 gets a bit soft fully out. The 300 f4 is even sharper with the 1.4 tele converter. Don't know the budget, but the 150-400 has the best of all worlds. Super sharp images, amazing stabilisation, lightweight, and even a built-in teleconverter for when you really need it. But there is a heavy price tag to that. Anyway, thanks for watching. I appreciate the comment. Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater It's not even anywhere close to my budget, and I generally prefer primes. The 300mm f4 and 200mm f2.8+tc are already great, but a 400mm prime might be greater :)
No not yet I find it a bit overkill with the lenses I already have but I'm going to test one soon and find out for myself what all the fuss is about. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater yes sure! I purcheased 8-25 because it's more easy to use normal magnetic filters and for extension to 25 focal. I have 50-140 F.2.8, 12-40 F 2.8 and 90 macro f 3:5 (this is really incredible lens). I sold 60 and changed with 30 macto very good for some macro compositions, like flowers or mushrooms.
Slightly late in watching this one. I'll agree 12-40 f2.8 is great for taking photos of old steam trains and static aircraft at airshows. 40-150 f2.8 is a good mid range lens when going to wildlife parks and I'm looking at buying the newer 150-600 lens as I can't justify the cost of the 150-400 lens as a hobbist photographer although I would like it for wildlife.
Better late then never is what we say here in the netherlands. I thibk the 150-600 is an excellent alternative for the 150-400. If you can handle a prime then the 300 is also an option. Anyways, lots of choice these days 🙂 thanks for watching grt guido
Grt guido
Ja best tevreden. Maar 60mm zeker even goed.
You don’t get the lenses for free? OMG!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Joking. Even with the ambassador advantages I still buy used because it is cheaper. Don’t return it… they will not notice 😅😂
Haha yeah who knows maybe they will forget about the big white beast 😉 but I doubt that it will happen. I got the 300mm used also haha. I do like that 8-25 that you use a lot. Maybe I will buy that sometime. Thanks for watching my friend! Grt guido
Sorry that it's not what you expected. I can't please everyone, unfortunately. I hope you will find a channel that suits your expectations. Thanks for watching anyway. Grt guido
@GuidoVanDeWater It a lot difference from om1 and om1 mk.2 I just have X,mk3 and om1?
@GuidoVanDeWater thank a lot now I want to let go of my em1X and em1 mk3 frist ps.my self I used grade filter some time(nisi)
Grt guido
@ljmacman awsome lens isn't it. I use it all the time. Thanks for watching grt guido
Interesting choices confirming mine. I just love the 40-150 f4 for flowers etc. because I can get in really close.
Hi Guido,
You've got some really nice glass there.

We're staying in interlaken again just like last year 🙂
For me the 12-100 is my go to. I’ve found that I can travel with just that and the 8-25. Plus the 17mm 1.8 in the jacket pocket😊
Grt guido
Thank you. Interested in converting to 4/3 for weight vs my age.
I thought about other systems, sure, but I just can't justify buying into larger/heavier/more expensive systems when the end result truly depends upon the person behind the camera.

Grt guido
Hello Guido
Nice collection of lenses. Have not so much but I like the kitlens 18-55mm om my Nikons. Followed by the 70-300mm Tamron.
Grt Ernesto
That is a great focal range. That 18mm is a pretty wide angle lens. Thanks for watching again 🙂 grt guido
Grt guido
This was a good video. I agree with you it is very difficult to say what a favorite lense would be they all have a purpose. Thanks again
Beste Guido
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I really enjoyed your video and I am a new subscriber. Thanks again. Hello from Florida, USA.
So technically, it's a 150-500, and then you can also add a 1
4 or 2.0 teleconverter.
My bag: the f/2.8 trinity, the 90 mm macro, the 150-400 great white and both TC’s. All that and the OM-1 fit in a carry-on bag.
@WalmyrBuzatto is super nice! We use almost the same set then except for the 90mm macro. Who knows, someday I will buy that one 🙂
I had 150-400 2 years love it
Did you sell it? Grt guido
My 12-40 Pro basically lives on my PenF. It is the best walk around shoot anything lens ever made.
Love the selection / also love the 40-150 f2.8
However, there clearly is a 100 - 300 f 2.8-4 missing in the line-up
Haha this lens is actualy from om system in the netherlands so it's probably not one that will be rented out 😅 but as far as I know I have to return it at the end of this month. 100-300 would be great or a 12-200 or something like that. But I'm satisfied with what I have right now 🙂 thnx for watching. Grt guido
Fun gear talk. You unimpressed with the 8-25/4? Seems like you could swap it in while also swapping out the 7-14/2.8 and 12-40/2.8.
Grt guido
Agreed, the 12 to 40 MM is the must have lens. Never seen a bad review, now a Mk2 is out, the original is cheaper on the used market.
Totally agree. a lot of my images are with that lens. I also like the 8-25, but then I miss a part until 40 mm where I do shoot lots of images. The mkii has a bit better coating, but indeed, there are probably lots of great second-hand options out there. thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido
Hoi Guido
It was a big investment and I don't think I want to spend more money on it now 😅
Thanks for watching and your comment.
Using Leica as the baseline, which is reasonable given that so many people would love to strut around with an M to dangle on their wrist or casually place on a cafe table, what would a 150-400/500 Leica tele be priced at?😅😅😅
Probably around 20k 😅 I always wonder if it is really vetter or that it's just the name that you pay more for...
I really would like to hear the OM1MII in all shutter modes ( I think the mechanical shutter is quite loud )
Grt guido
In my bag now always included 90 f3.5 macro and macro rail
I still have my doubts if it's worth switching to the 90mm from the 60 that I have. I would really have to commit ro more macro to justify the extra money. Don't know if I'm willing to do that. Thanks for watching grt guido
@GuidoVanDeWater my though not worth it for me I had 60 long time ago and I sold it with my em1
@Angeliekje2 zeker geen spoilers meer 🤪
While I do have other Oly lenses, my GOTO lenses are: 60/2.8 macro... 12-45/f4 Pro... 40-150/2.8... 150-400/4.5... (I also always have my 25/1.8 in the bag but rarely use it.)
Sounds like a great kit that can give you a real flexible approach to your photography. I hope I can that 150-400 as my own lens some day 😅 thanks for watching grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater I’m primarily a birder / wildlife shooter so the 150-400 is perfect. Such an amazing lens. I know I’ll get the shot with it.
@TerryD23 even for landscapes it's just fantastic! I use it more and more. Best lens for m43 🙂
Grt guido

@@GuidoVanDeWater Helaas inmiddels 22 jaar geleden 😢
For me the 12-40 is the lens I use most and the 40-150 f2.8 the 60mm is sharp but feels and focus poor. 1.4 convert great x2 not as sharp 300mm f4 great but I struggle with the weight
But the but is still 20mp and other brands have upped the game am `thinking Fuji but the best range of lenses is for sure olympus
You do not have 8-25 F4 pro! It's incredible!
@Tom-Tenerife sounds like an amazing set of lenses! Are you located in tenerife?
@@GuidoVanDeWater Yes, in Puerto de La Cruz, I'm born in Italy, in Milan
@Tom-Tenerife nice. Seen great images from the canary islands.
De 300mm zit nog in mijn wensen pakket 🤓
Zeker de moeite waard! Grt guido
Grt guido
Ja best tevreden. Maar 60mm zeker even goed.
You don’t get the lenses for free? OMG!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Joking.
Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater i shoot almost 80% of my photos with the 8-25… I love it.
You talk too much without saying that much! You need to cut it way down.,
Sorry that it's not what you expected. I can't please everyone, unfortunately. I hope you will find a channel that suits your expectations. Thanks for watching anyway. Grt guido
@@GuidoVanDeWater You should start with conclusions.
Thanks for the feedback.
Sorry, to much bla, bla!
No problem!
