I first saw this video just after I got the OM system gear and was new to it all after coming from Nikon FF. Now, 6 months on I have been amazed by the whole system. I have all the lenses you talk about and your comment about FF users cropping the crap out of their images is so true. I’ve found, as a wildlife shooter I have far less work to do in post, I don’t need to crop anywhere near as much and the quality of the lenses is amazing. You are my go to channel for all things Olympus and I wish I didn’t live so far away, otherwise I would look to do your OM workshops. Thank you. 🙏
Just discovered your channel Lee - love your no b******t delivery. A breath of fresh air. Far too many armchair experts who wouldn’t know good photography if their life depended on it
Yes, do not be afraid of that combo. As long as you are not "cropping the crap" out of your images, you will be fine. Proper exposure, sharp images, and great post-processing will help!
hi Lee I really appreciate your honesty. you call man and horse, and are straightforward. that's what people benefit from the most. it separates sense from nonsense and puts people back on the ground. yours sincerely
I try to always maintain a full 100' BS free zone when it comes to discussing gear, photography, technical elements, creative elements and the like! People may not always agree with me, which is perfectly fine, but not going to tender foot around! Thanks good sir!
I love my OM-1 and 40-150 2.8. It's such a capable system and the lens is awesome and I'm not afraid of a little rain when I'm out. I agree the 150-400 is not overpriced compared to other lenses from the full frame camera makers. Some of them cost a lot more, with fewer capabilities. Olympus glass has always been great, I still have my 50-200 4/3s lens and that thing is tac sharp.
Thanks for the video. Full of terrific insight again. I have never owned a lens as good as my 40-150 pro. It is so versatile especially when paired with the 1.4 TC. I use it for birds butterflies, dragonflies, landscapes and even macro. I ordered the 2.0 TC on Monday and it is due on Saturday. Can't wait to get it in use. I have the 100-400mm Panasonic Leica and like it but was considering adding the Olympus lens to pair with the TCS. I think that I would be better served if I wait a little longer and go for the 300mm.
That room looks like the Antler Inn. Stayed there last summer for a landscape astrophotography workshop for Olympus users only. Looking forward to going back some day. My three must haves are the 7-14, 12-40 and 40-150 f2.8 PROs. Awesome glass!! Just recently found your channel and really enjoy it!
Hello I selected the 8-18 leica above the 7-14 and 8-25 because it is 2.8, and takes 75mm square filters. Quality is great, not sure how it compares but very nice
Thanks for watching! The challenge with non-OM System lenses is not all computational features will work and it varies by lens. The impact is less on wide-angle than telephoto. Also, the 7-14 is a constant F2.8!
40-150 f2.8 is the reason I stay with Oly/OM Systems. It is such a fabulous compact tele lens. In fact, I just sold my EM5 and will be getting OM1 next week to pair it with 40-150. I do use it with 1.4x teleconverter. I never thought of the 2x until you mentioned. How is the quality? If it is comparable to the 1.4x, I might get it as well. As nice as 300f4 pro lens is, I think I would have preferred the flexibility of zoom lens.
I had great success with the OM-1 and 40-150 with 2x! I broke my 300mm f4.0 on a Galapagos workshop and that combo is what I used for rest of workshop!
Thanks for another very interesting and informative clip, Lee. I'd love a "temptress" (150-400) but in Australia it's divorce-level expensive though I readily accept that you get a lot for the money. I'm advised that I'll have to make do with the 100-400. And the tip re panoramas and telephoto lenses is invaluable, because I do more landscapes than anything else.
Hahaha, so true though! The 100-400 will serve you just fine! Make sure to turn on Lens IS Priority in the AF menu for that lens! I will do a video on long lens landscapes at some point!
Hello Lee. I just joined your channel based on the recommendation from Rob Trek. I have been a nature photographer for quite some time, but converted to M43. I don’t own the OM-1 System yet, but did get the EM 1 Mk3 before Olympus sold. Anyway, I am enjoying your channel and commenting on your work.🎉
Thanks for joining Stuart! I appreciate the shout out from Rob! I will be posting much more OM System information so stay tuned for more from the straight shooter from west Texas!
Hi Lee. Just discovered your channel and have watched some of your stuff. I’ve own many cameras in the past and most recently moved from canon 5div to OM1 systems. I must say I’m impressed. I’m a geologist and based on the recommendations of the camera store guy purchased the OM1 & 12-100 f4 pro as my all purpose walk around camera. I must say that I’ve found this is a fantastic all round setup. This video has basically confirmed my next purchase will be the 8-25 f4 and the 40-150 f2.8. I’ve also been looking for a wide angle prime but not sure what to pick. Eventually I may even consider the 90 macro.
Well, those lenses and the 90 Macro are stellar! Just a tip, if you purchase those lenses through my Affiliate links down below, I will offer a free one hour zoom meeting/class to help you set up your camera or cover any topic(s) you like! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi Lee!!! Just found you on the u tube and I’ve been watching your videos and enjoying your advice! I just got my 150-400 yesterday!!! I’m super excited to start leaning how to use it. I have had the OM1 with 300 f 4.0 and mostly used the 2.0 on it for birds on a stick but could never really master birds in flight because of the fixed length and having to remove the 2.0 or put on the 1.4. I absolutely love the 300 for sure it is a super sharp lens but am so excited to get out and start using the 150 - 400 f4.5 pro. Started watching your workshop on BH about mastering birds in flight. Great info!!! Hope to see you in the field someday!!!
Congrats on the new lens, my all time favorite lens! I do offer some OM System Only Workshops! I have an OM System Only Mastering Birds in Flight Workshop in Florida in March 2025 (wildsidenaturetours.com/wildside-tour/florida-mastering-bird-in-flight-photography/) and I am putting together a 2025 Alaska Mastering Birds in Flight OM Only with myself and fellow OM System Ambassador, Eric Rock!
Hi, thanks for great content. Need your advice for wild life / nature lens, I can't decide... The 40-150 2.8 + teleconveter 2x but no lens IS or... the slower 100-400 that have IS ?
@@PaulMrPKcom You are welcome Paul! I personally think the 40-150 F2.8 is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 100-400 in terms of IQ. I have used the 40-150mm F2.8 with the 2.0x many times with great success.
It is unreal the level of not giving AF I have reached! It is the most freeing thing in the world! ;) Thanks for watching and giving encouraging words!
Hi Lee! Recently found your channel and what a gem it is. Thank you so much for sharing some serious knowledge about photography. Not only the gear which can save folks a ton of money but the science of creating the images we hope to achieve. I appreciate you being a straight shooter and find it both refreshing and entertaining. I wouldn’t change a thing. Everyone is so focused on getting the latest and greatest bodies but I think they would be better served saving up for the best lenses. Seems every year these manufacturers are trying to outdo themselves and the competition. How many of these new features are a requirement vs stick with a camera you know inside and out. I love Olympus and have 4 bodies and it’s been a minute since I’ve upgraded and I think maybe it’s time to jump up but then I think about that 150-400. Much bigger investment but definitely a game changer. I also think it’s great that you offer an Olympus only workshop. I’ll have to check that out. Another great investment over a new camera body.
That 150-400 . . . the temptress! Thanks for watching! I have a saying "Master Your System, Master Your Photography." It is my headline for my OM System Mentorship Program! You are so correct in that mastering what you have will always trump new gear that someone doesn't understand! Would love to have you join me on an OM System Only Workshop!
Thanks for the video. Good information. I'm thinking of switching from Canon (R5, 500mm F4, 100-400 L, etc.) to the OM system. I'm wondering if I would be better of for BIF to have the 40-150 2.8 with a teleconverter 2.0 as opposed to the 100-400. I can't see needing to go out to the 800mm full frame equivalent mm.
Well, you have posed an interesting question! For birds, focal length rules! I would ask if the 150-600mm is in your price range? If not, the 40-150 with 2x is better quality than the 100-400, but that 200mm of extra reach is great!
I have both 40-150 f/2.8 and f/4, the only lens i doubled up on. I can combine it with the 12-40 and 300 f/4 and other stuff without going beyond the 7kg airline carry on limit. The f/4 is very sharp wide open.
That 40-150mm is a special lens, you can not tell me it isn't sharp with both the 1.4 and 2.0 and you say the same as me! That is an awesome three lens set as well! In fact, before I had the 150-400, that was mine! Would love to have you join me on a workshop some day! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I also have both the f2.8 and f4.0 40-150 lenses. Like you said, the f2.8 with one or both teleconverters is incredibly versatile and relatively compact. However, if you want to travel super light and don't need to go past 300mm 35mm equivalent, I can't say enough good things about the f4.0 version. It is super small collapsed and the IQ is amazing like all the OM PRO lenses. Thanks for another highly useful video.
@@gregfeeler6910 I have tried to think of a way to justify having another 40-150 just because I love lenses, but I can't really do so, even though I know it is amazing! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@leehoyphotographyIt wasn't my plan to have both. I got the 40-150 f4 when I got my OM-1 bundled with the 12-40 f2.9 II so I'd have two lenses with the IP53 rating. A year later I found a deal on a 40-150 f.8 I just couldn't pass up. Like everyone else, I just love that lens, but I do a lot of cross country motorcycle touring (I have friends in the Big Bend area) and the f4 40-150 is perfect for that because of it's small size and the IP53 weatherproofing.
Nice video Lee!! I shoot landscapes. The 8-25 is just WONDERFUL... I use the 40-150 f4... I have both the f2,8 and the f4, but I basically use the 2,8 for portraits because the image quality is the same... (I do landscape.... not animals). The advantage is that I can carry it in my pocket. About the 150-400... I try hardly to keep myself far from it.... it is too good. By the way, the new 150-600 is quite good!!! It's synch stabilisation is fenomenal
That white lens is my biggest wish i have a lot of great lens all pro and all Olympus but here in Australia they are 13500.00 dollars and as much as i love 40-150pro amd my 12-40pro for sport i think that 150-400 would be God send . Great advice .
Out shooting cormorants the other day, trying my hand at tracking birds in flight. A lot of the photos were blurry. First thought, "Lee Hoy will tell me my shutter speed is too slow. I'd better ramp it up the next time!" 😉 I went straight from the old Lumix 45-200 mega ois lens to the Oly 300 f4. I could see right off that the results were _much_ better, though I'm also glad of vids like this that confirm it was money well spent. The 40-150 2.8 is on the shopping list too, though I want to see how this rumoured 50-250 (or is it 50-200? Conflicting info) turns out first.
I love that comment about "Lee Hoy will tell me . . ." That is EXACTLY why I do these videos and don't care about the haters! Your comment is why I invest the time in doing this and love hearing that it is helping! Thanks for sharing that with me! Been some rough stuff to deal with while in Cuba (not the trip proper per say) and this helped!
My favorite kit: 40-150 2.8 (and teleconverter) and the 12-40 2.8 and the tiny 12 mm in my pocket in case I want a tiny camera in my hand or pocket. Or if I am specifically looking for birds: the 300 and the 12. I will try the 40-150 for panos, I had not thought about that.
Brian, would it be mostly for birds? How good are you at getting close to birds? For quality, I prefer the 40-150, but that extra 200mm of reach is nothing to sneeze at! For small birds, the 100-400, for everything else the 40-150 combo!
Curious why you add a tripod plate to your 150-400… looks like you’ve added an Arca swiss plate to an already compatible foot. Side note, I’ve newly discovered your channel. I appreciate your down to earth style. Having a collection of my own Olympus gear, I find that I am often subjecting myself to the “should I switch brands” debate but with no evidence that my setup has any faults. I still use an EM1 MK II - and look forward to adding a new OM1 MKII in the coming months (adding, not replacing!). Thanks for your thoughts.
Well, nice eyes! I am impressed you caught that! It is for one reason and one reason only, to mount a medium Really Right Stuff Flash bracket for off-camera flash use. The built-in arca swiss plate has that padding on the top and the RRS bracket will not sit level on it! It adds more weight and I should remove when not using the flash! Thanks for the nice words about the channel, I will always keep it real! Don't get caught up in that debate! Focus on mastering your gear!
I'm in between the 8-25 f4 or the 7-14 f2.8 but don't know which one to pick but as far as other lenses I own are the 12-40 f2.8 ll, 90mm macro, and the 150-400 f4.5.
What do you shoot the most? I love them both, but I use the 8-25mm 100x more than 7-14. Check out the sun dog image from today in Grand Teton on my Instagram page (leehoyphotography) or at my facebook (Lee Hoy). I love them both but if you do much with filters, the 8-25 wins! You have a cracking nice lens set! If don't do night sky, for sure 8-25mm!
@@leehoyphotography Well I really don't shoot the stars at night but I do quite a bit of blue hour cityscapes which you don't need 2.8, But kind of thinking since I already have the 12-40 f2.8 maybe the 7-14 would be the better option.
Great video. Im new to cameras and recently got a new OM-5 with the 12-45 for a great deal at 1100€. I originial wanted to buy a used EM5 MK3 but with the same lens they were around 800-1000€ so i just went for a new one instead. Already got myself the 20mm 1.4 pro and now im looking for a 40-150 2.8 with the 1.4 teleconverter which should be fun for birds in the city and going to the nature park or zoo where animals are used to humans and come closer. Its been really fun to finally use a actual camera even tho i have a lot to learn, and your videos help a lot with it.
I love hearing how my videos are helping fellow OM System photographers! The OM-5 and that lens is a great combination! The 20mm 1.4 I don't own but I don't do many portraits but I bet it would be GREAT for that! The 40-150 F2.8 is the #1 selling OM lens! It is a spectacular lens! If you can, go for the 2.0 instead of the 1.4 for birds! You will be glad for the reach.
@leehoyphotography i thought about the MC20 but I think I rather put that money towards the 300mm F4 pro for next year. Should be a good combo with the 40-150
Appreciate the to-the-point video. I'm getting ready to get rid of my Canon DSLRs (6D and 80D) plus my 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 lenses and other pieces and parts. Just a little too heavy and bulky for this old man these days. Oh, and hola from Kinney County. I can still swing and use my gear, but it's just too bulky and heavy anymore for just-for-fun shooting. My for-a-living days are way behind me. I'm really looking at the OM-D E-M5 Mark IIII and a few good lenses. I thought about primes all around. I do like fast primes. However, I also like framing the image with a good zoom essentially cropping before you take the image. I'm going to be limited starting out to spending what I can get out of my gear. I'd love the Pro short and long zooms. I was considering the 12-200mm 3.5-6.3 and maybe a good prime in the 40-50mm 1.8 in full frame, 35mm equivalent. I'm retired with just a lousy SSI and minimal VA disability and my wife is a teacher. So, not the discretionary income to go for the lenses I'd love to get. I do like the thought of the 40-150mm f4 (2.8 even better) and the 12-40 2.8, but I don't think I will have enough from the old gear to cover that level even buying clean, used. Is the 12-200 a good performer for the budget restricted? Or any suggestions for a po boy to cover wide to tele and still get good image quality? Thanks. Edited for typos.
Wow, Kinney County! Hello from Jeff Davis County! The 12-100mm F4.0 is the BOMB, I had bought for my wife and I started using and won't give it back! True story! You should be able to find a good used copy too! I would say save up a bit and go with this lens, the difference between it and the 12-200 3.5-6.3 is pretty dramatic! Just be patient and you will find a good used copy at a decent price.
Thanks! Going to the Oly system is on the back burner for now. Too many other projects than funds, but I think the end goal is the D5 MkIII and that lens. Appreciate the response!
Of course, all camera systems and brands are capable, but it is nice to hear in-depth information about this system and its advantages. I always liked the PEN cameras but would go for one of those with the viewfinder if I was to buy one now.
Exactly, you can capture a great image with cameras from any system, have to consider the various distinctions between them and what works best for you! If you decided to change, let me know, always enjoy hearing what someone chooses!
I'm not young but new to enthusiast level photography and want to upgrade from a small 1/2.3" Bridge super zoom (which I've started to like). I've watched so many videos and read so many reviews but to cut a long story short this system is probably the best for my use case. I am not convinced I need really expensive glass and big cameras to get the results I like. The picture you took of a bird where you could see the mites on its beak at a high iso looked flawless to me on a screen larger than any print I'd ever make. Highly likely I will buy an entry level om system with EVF at this point.
@@jebbytunnelcoats1182 Take a look at the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV! I just got my father-in-law one for Christmas. It has many of the special features found on the pro level OM-1 but with an easy to use interface (of course, some of the special features don't have the same options). But this camera is VERY impressive as an entry level OM System body! I was sent one to test by OM System and I was surprised at the capabilities!
I have a E-VOLT 500 that takes very nice pictures with the kit lens. There are lots of videos about birds and landscapes, now I am interested in taking pictures of inside and out of large old houses and barns without the walls collapsing inwards. Can you do a talk about which lens is best?
OM System and the m4/3 system has the best lens selection of any system - especially the PRO lenses. Everything is so good, it makes it hard to choose what to carry along sometimes. On another note, any chance we could get a firmware update that lets lens function button's "function" change automatically based on the lens mounted on the camera? For example, if I mount the 12-40, I would like the function to go into high res mode, and if I mount the 300 f4 I want it to be focus limiter. Maybe a good idea for the OM team to consider for future updates?
I was just thinking that very thing about the function button and guess what, as an Ambassador, I do have a way of submitting those requests!! Consider it done!
Hey Lee, Just found your channel and I love it! I am relatively new to the OM system. I kind of just by accident received my dad's (pretty new) gear. It is the E-M1 Mark iii, 17mm F1.2, 30mm F3.5 Macro and the 100-400mm and a tripod. As a newer photographer, I want to both be able to photograph natur and wildlife, but also during travels in cities and such. My question is, whether it would make more sense buying the 12-100 F4 stabilized lens or should I go for the 40-150mm F2.8? the prices for those to a very comparable in Denmark where I live.
Mathias, so glad you found the channel and hope you learn a lot from my videos! Thanks for watching and commenting! Wow, asking me if I would prefer the 12-100 or the 40-150 is like asking if I would like a Ram Rebel 1500 (which I have) or a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (which I have had in the past). I love them both but for slightly different reasons. The factor that pushes me to my answer is your current lineup of lenses and your stated photography interests. the big difference is the F4.0 versus 2.8 and the focal length. Both images are outstanding quality and you won't be disappointed with either, I own both. For street photography, the 12-100 is the winner on that comparison, as well as, for most landscape photography. I do use the 40-150mm for long lens landscape images and long lens panoramas a lot. You already have the 100-400 though so to avoid a slight bit of overlap, the 12-100 is the slight winner. The 40-150 is better for nature in general as you can easily add the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters and have great results. But adding those converters gets you to focal lengths the 100-400 already provides. Hope that helps.
@@leehoyphotography Hey Lee, Thank you so much! Great answer and much to think about. I am definitely also planning at a later stage to upgrade the telephoto zoom as you say above. I am definitely interested in the 300mm F4 but the budget needs to keep up
@@mathiasandersson1308 The 300mm F4.0 is an amazing lens, I have two and they are super high quality! Once I got the 150-400 though, I have hardly touched them!
I am sure the 150-400 is amazing, but that is definitely outside of my price range. Probably will stay that way tbh. I am think a hiking setup with the 17mm F1.2, 12-100mm and a 300m maybe with a 2X coverter. Then that should cover everything i need. Oh, and then the 30mm macro since its only 120g and tiny
I find it interesting that you use a circular polarizer on a super wide angle lens. Do you use it for reflection control? In my experience it just rearranges the light and dark parts of the sky, because the direction of polarization varies so much across a wide field, and still requires editing in post to fix.
I pay careful attention to the direction I am shooting and thus, I have no issues. But you do have to pay close attention. I do use quite a bit for wide angle landscapes, especially black and white landsdcapes.
I don't know a single Ambassador who shoots with it that wouldn't say it isn't exceptionally sharp. All the ones who shoot landscape mainly love that lens.
Quality and overall system size and weight are why I switched to OMDS years ago. I do have 2 x OM-1 and when going out for wildlife photography, In my ThingTank Airport Essential, I have two bodies with 300mm F4, both MCs, Pen-Leica 200mm F2.8, 40-150mm F2.8, 12-40mm F2.8 and Penleica 9mm F1.7. The 40-150mm F2.8, I might not take it with me if I only anticipate taking birds images only. I don't really do landscape but more family vacation photos. My recent trip to Thailand with my family, I took with me in the same bag, 2xOM-1, 300mm F4, two MCs, 200mm F2.8, 17mm F1.2, 45mm F1.2, 75mm F1.8 and 9mm F1.7. I could have easily include 40-150mm F2.8 but didn't feel I need it. Not sure I can carry something like this with any other system in one carry on camera bag! Keep your great content coming Lee. Hopefully, I get to do your workshop in the future.
Great kit! I hope the Thailand trip was the bomb! I haven't been but would love to get there someday! Don't you love putting all that into a carry on! One of the best feelings! We were tearing it up today, we spent 9 hours photographing wolves on a bison! Thanks for watching and commenting!
That sounds fantastic Lee. Not sure how my back will handle should I have opportunity to do winter photography over at Yellowstone NP. I am assuming you are there at the moment. I went to one of the largest NP in Thailand, Kangkrachan. Not the peak season yet in Jan. Most photography activities were for family. But I am heading back in Feb and hope to have more time for birding at a few different locations. Stay warm and best of luck.
I was confused about which were the actual 3 specific lenses. You talked about several options. For me. I take the 8mm f1.8 fisheye, the 12-100mm f4, and the BWL. My wife takes the 60mm macro, the 12-100mm f4, and the 300mm f4. We both use OM-1 ii, and I also carry the TG-7 for special situations.
John, first, thanks for being a part of my OM system community here on RUclips! Second, I normally use Lightroom for stitching and have had grest success with it.
Very interesting video, Lee. Together with the OM1 body, I travel with the 8/1.8 and 12-100/4 for vacation photography. Or, if I'm out shooting wildlife, it's the 40-150/2.8 and 1.4TC, and I will soon add the 300/4. Either way, I will have just a two lens bag depending on what the purpose of the trip is. For me, it's all about travelling as light as possible. I would love to have the big white lens but can't justify the cost for recreational photography. Keep up the great work on content - much appreciated.
Those are two AWESOME lenses and the 12-100 goes with me to the Galapagos Islands everytime! I love my 8 f/1.8 and it is one of my go to lenses for night sky! Thanks for watching and I will keep the content going!
I'm conflicted, whether I want to go the 3 lens route (8-25, 40-150, 300) or 2 lens (12-100, 300). I love the 40-150 to bits, and after having played for a day with the 8-25 I'm convinced that it's a fantastic lens, but I feel like I want to reduce the amount of lens juggling I do on my trips. I guess I'll end up with both 8-25 and 12-100 🤷 EDIT: Oh, and you can count me in as one of those who complain about teleconverter image quality ;) The only lens I use my MC20 is the 300/4, for moon or insect shots. With the 40-150, teleconverter images are... I don't know, there's something off about them.
I suspect there are a few things related to shutter speed, cropping, etc. that lead you to not be happy with the teleconverters. I can use them and rest assured I don't think anyone could tell a difference between them! I will do a video on it sometime! I always carry two bodies so I can have two lenses ready to go at anytime. Swapping lenses is a pain at times, but I think either way you will have a great kit! Not sure what genres you enjoy the most but that should drive your choice!
I've tried 40-150 with MC20 and 300 side-by-side, in the exact same conditions. The thing I am put off by the most is the amplified chromatic aberration you get when using the teleconverter. It is pretty good, as long as you can decently fill the frame with the subject, and for some tele-macro(ish) work. As for the lens, I guess it will mostly boil down to whichever goes on sale first, when I gather enough savings :)
Been an Olympus user for quite a while now Lee and have a similar stack of lenses. What's your view on the cosmetic OM-1 v 2 uprade? Did they short chnage OM-1 users and deny them a fix for the auto-focus issues?
It was more than cosmetic because it was a big memory upgrade and GND, but the difference isn’t nearly as big as that between E-M1x and OM-1. My testing so far is great difference for landscape, more range with sensor and GND is amazing. For bird in flight, not sure there is an improvement.
What about the 150_600? I'm on the disguise to get this over the 300pro. What are your thoughts? I have tried the 300 and its awesome but not yet the zoom one...
Lee. I am having trouble with your links that you have below. I tried clinking on camera and video workshop or class on my iPad Pro and also on my iPhone. All the sites say page not found. Maybe you can help me out. Thanks
Well, if I could afford it, I would choose the same lenses. But today, I have the 8-25 and the 40-150. Mostly I use the 8-25 which is such a gem. I love that lens with all my heart. Yes, 2.8 would be marvellous, but I cope as it is. I also use my 12-100. But not as much because of the weight. I would love to have it replaced by a 20-200 f3.5IS PRO. Is that possible to wish for 😅? Will it be too big? What else would I wish for? A 100-350 f3.5IS PRO maybe? Anyway, I like that you go all in for the 150-400.
There is no doubt cost always is a factor in our camera kit! Believe me, I do understand and realize how blessed I am to have that lens! What aspects of the 8-25 are your favorite? That 20-200 3.5 would be heavier than the 12-100!!! It would be an interesting lens. The 100-350 F3.5 would still be an expensive lens and a bit short for me for wildlife, but I am not saying I wouldn't buy it! ;)
@@leehoyphotography Thanks for your words. I love the versatility in the range 8-25. I often need wider angle than 12 mm in my photographing, due to I take photo in military. And I also take many photos around 25 mm. Yes I realise the 20-200 would be big. But I would prefere that over my 12-100. Since I have the 8-25, I don't need the area 12-20 in the 12-100. But I do really much need the area between 100-200. And the area 20-40. Quite often at the same shooting place and switching lens takes much effort in bad weather. I will maybe buy a 100-400, but I need faster than 5.0-6.3. And I probably also need IP53 durability. So in that case I want that lens to be 100-350 or 100-300. And f3.5 if possible. I think it would be a interesting lens if it reach 350 mm. I understand it will be an expensive lens, but maybe I sell one of my houses if I have to haha😅.
…and for those of us on a tight budget, 7-14, 12-100 and 75-300 (until I’ll have enough money saved for the 100-400). I’ve often thought of selling the 12-100 + 75-300 and get the 40-150 f2.8, but I know I would miss the 12-100 in the end.
If I could only take three lenses as a wildlife photographer then has to be 90mm macro, 40-150mm f2.8 and 150-400mm + 1.25TC together with x1.4 and x2,0 TCs
@@leehoyphotography it is much smaller as an e.g. 300mm f4, so it would be more versatile an more in use :-) on the other hand it has a great focal range & can be doubled (in camera digital zoom inkl. high res).
@@stehlealexander I am not sure that a zoom covering that range would really be too much smaller than the 300mm f/4 but I would be curious to find out! Also, the in-camera digital zoom is terrible in terms of quality!
@@leehoyphotography compare with the mana leica 50-200mm! 2x digital zoom is by the way much better than cropping! especially with in combination with high res mode :-)
I've not read the other comments. Maybe someone else pointed out that the MC-20 on the 40-150mm f/2.8 will give you f/5.6 and not f/4 as you said...a little slip of the tongue. Yeah, big deal. Anyone with a clue can figure this out for themselves. And I'm not here to look for nits to pick on, cause they don't mean a thing. I will say that I have the 40-150mm pro and I use the MC-20 on it a lot...and it's fine. Anyone who says it's not must be cropping their images too much!!! At least, that's what someone told me. haha. I also have the 300mm f/4 and I use the MC-20 on that too...and again, it's fine. Truth is, I like my MC-20 better than my MC-14. So, what do I use the MC-14 on? I have the 100-400mm Oly lens. And the MC-14 works fine on that. I've tried the MC-20 on it to get maximum range, but it doesn't work so well. Hmm. That same MC-20 works great on the Pro lenses. What's the problem with the 100-400mm? I'm guessing its diffraction because with the MC-20 on that 100-400 racked out to 400mm...the aperture is now pushing f/13. It's just too much. I'm thinking it's best not to use anything above f/11. Just my 2 cents. For night photography, I have the 17mm f/1.2 pro. That is the sharpest lens I own...and I have quite a few. It hits its peak at f/2.8, but it's plenty sharp even at f/1.2. My 2nd sharpest lens is the 12-45mm f/4. I thought it was a little travel lens and wouldn't be as good as my 12-40mm f/2.8. Turns out I was wrong, the little lens is a bit sharper everywhere (even at f/4)...yeah, it's pixel peeping to notice the tiny difference, but there it is. I will add that both of those lenses are a bit sharper than my 40-150mm pro at 40mm. Again...have to pixel peep to notice.
Yea, slip of the tongue on F-stop with that combo! Good catch! I agree on that combo of lens and extender! No problem of you follow ETTR, start with sharp shot and DxO! Love how my comments on cropping are catching on! I use the MC-14 on the 300 at blinds and on the 90mm macro! No, the 100-400 doesn't handle extenders well! Would you believe I haven't got the 17mm F1.2 yet? I am sure it will end up in my bag at some point! Thanks for watching!
@@leehoyphotography Mmm, how dare anybody having a view that conflicts with yours. Hope that you may, one day, realise that's not a crossroads but quite normal. Realistic people are usually grateful for feedback.

I came here to hear about the 60mm macro, why put it in the description and not mention it? Or are you just bragging about the expensive glass you own?
Do you wake up and decided to comment like an as*hat or does it just come naturally? Those are links for affiliate purchases. NOWHERE in video description does it say I will discuss that lens..
@@leehoyphotography So it's basically a click bait video. You have listed them in the description BEFORE the lenses you then talk about. I think you need to reread your own description. I hope your not as obtuse with your paying clients.

Hmmm, I am curious. Who else has a 80-300mm F2.8 for anywhere near the price of the OM System (40-150mm F2.8)? Please, send me the link for that lens? I do not think your basket has oranges to oranges, I think you are throwing in some apples, pears, and bananas! And who else has a 300-800 F4.5 with built-in 1.25x for close to our price?
Just to see how goofy your comment was, I went and searched B&H Photo. Just taking the OM System (40-150 F2.8 - 80-300 F2.8 35mm equivalent) and did a quick search on B&H. First, no company has anything even close to that. There is the standard 70-200 F2.8 lenses and the prices are way higher (except for Sigma). Did you actually bother to find facts before posting? It is amazing the difference they make to an argument.
OmDS charges these prices because that is what it expects you to pay. It's all about getting as much money from you. It has nothing to do with the product.
@@formermpc10 they sell rebranded sigma lens for 250% markup up lol APS-C / FF body & lenses have decreased in size / weight nearly matching most MFT. This big bald clown thinks you need f2.8 FF to match the DOF you get from f2.8 MFT 🤡
Thank you. 🙏
Love hearing this and glad you found my channel! When you nail it in camera the post is so much easier!

Thank for your video. It made me rethink about 40-150mm + MC20.
Yes, do not be afraid of that combo. As long as you are not "cropping the crap" out of your images, you will be fine. Proper exposure, sharp images, and great post-processing will help!

Have you tried the 40-150mm for long lens landscape and pano photography? It is amazing!
Don't get another `100-400!! Wait for the 300mm or the 150-600!
Yes sir, you are correct! For landscape and astro, those are a great combination! Thanks for watching and being a part of my channel!
Hello
I selected the 8-18 leica above the 7-14 and 8-25 because it is 2.8, and takes 75mm square filters.
@@leehoyphotography thanks for your affirmation! Can’t wait to get it!!
I love that you don't give a toss.
The 150-400 is on my wishlist. I may never be able to afford it, but its on the list. I love yhe 40-150 f2.8 and the 300 f4.
Those are two awesome lenses! The 300mm F4 is such a great long lens! Thanks for watching and I will do some videos on those two lenses in the future!

@@leehoyphotographyIt wasn't my plan to have both. I got the 40-150 f4 when I got my OM-1 bundled with the 12-40 f2.9 II so I'd have two lenses with the IP53 rating. Like everyone else, I just love that lens, but I do a lot of cross country motorcycle touring (I have friends in the Big Bend area) and the f4 40-150 is perfect for that because of it's small size and the IP53 weatherproofing.

I went straight from the old Lumix 45-200 mega ois lens to the Oly 300 f4. I could see right off that the results were _much_ better, though I'm also glad of vids like this that confirm it was money well spent. The 40-150 2.8 is on the shopping list too, though I want to see how this rumoured 50-250 (or is it 50-200? Conflicting info) turns out first.

My old 50-200mm 1:2,8 with mft dapter is very sharp and very good for close ups.
Nothing like having a great older lens that is still producing!
Great lens kit! The 12-40 and 40-150 are killer pano lenses! That 12mm is so small, I have it and love that lens!
I have 12-100 f4. Love it. Would you recommend the 40-150 2.8 with 1.4x and 2.0x, or the 100-400? I’m a hobbyist
@@leehoyphotography Well I really don't shoot the stars at night but I do quite a bit of blue hour cityscapes which you don't need 2.8, But kind of thinking since I already have the 12-40 f2.8 maybe the 7-14 would be the better option.

Great video. Thanks for the information.
Thanks!
Ok I think I will have a look at the OM DE EM10 MK 4 like you suggested in comment. Danke
I have a E-VOLT 500 that takes very nice pictures with the kit lens. There are lots of videos about birds and landscapes, now I am interested in taking pictures of inside and out of large old houses and barns without the walls collapsing inwards. Can you do a talk about which lens is best?
You bet, I will make a note of that!
Thanks for the video. I think you meant f/5.6 for the 40-150 f/2.8 with MC-20.
Yep, I sure did, good catch!
Unrelated to photo stuff but Lee can you recommend good accommodation up there? Looking to come up from New Zealand for another trip in the spring😊
We were at the Parkway Inn. It is decent, will be much more in Spring (but so are all the places!!)
Hey Lee,
Just found your channel and I love it!
I considered trading in my. 12-45 f4 Pro for the 8-25 but I am not yet convinced it is exceptionally sharp.
@@narinthip3058 Holy cow! Yesterday we were the first snowcoach to arrive and last to leave the Wapiti pack bringing down a bison! It was incredible!
Great video and love your outspokenness😄.
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching!
The 3 I mentioned in the video as the three I don't leave at home are 8-25mm F4.0, 40-150 F2.8, and 150-400 F4.5!
Just curious what panorama stitching software you are using for your 40-150 f2.8 hand held landscapes mentioned in this video?
I guess I'll end up with both 8-25 and 12-100 🤷
EDIT: Oh, and you can count me in as one of those who complain about teleconverter image quality ;) The only lens I use my MC20 is the 300/4, for moon or insect shots.
For me, when it comes to wildlife, I will always go with a zoom over a prime if possible!
Is the 300/4 with 1.4x sharper or the 150-400 at 400mm?
Oh, the 150-400 would probably be. But, if I post processed an image taken either way, I highly doubt you could tell!
You go boy
Hahaha, thanks!
If I had enough money for the 150-400mm they'd have to physically stop me bringing it with me every time I left the house 😄
Hahaha, well, maybe some day you can!
Lee. I am having trouble with your links that you have below. I tried clinking on camera and video workshop or class on my iPad Pro and also on my iPhone. All the sites say page not found. Maybe you can help me out. Thanks
Thank you for letting me know, let me check!
Thanks, something had truncated the links so thank you for pointing that out!
@@sweden_ove2074 Great description of why! Enjoyed reading, hold off on the 100-400 and go with teh 100-350 when it comes out!
Can Olympus users attend your OM Systems workshops?
Heck yeah David! You bet!
That 12-100 is a killer lens! What are your favorite genres of photography? That is so key to picking the best lenses for you!
The 40-150 f2.8, with the 2x teleconverter, gives you ff equivalent of 600mm, but at f 5.6, rather than f 4 as the video states.
8-25 f4
90 f3.5 macro
150-400 f4.5
That's my killer lens set.
Honourable mention 75 f1.8
That is a great list too!
If I could only take three lenses as a wildlife photographer then has to be 90mm macro, 40-150mm f2.8 and 150-400mm + 1.25TC together with x1.4 and x2,0 TCs
Yea, if I am going to do any macro, the 90mm macro goes as my fourth lens!
I want the 50-250 f4
What is it about that focal length in particular you would use it for? I love hearing how people anticipate a lens' use!
@@leehoyphotography it is much smaller as an e.g. 300mm f4, so it would be more versatile an more in use :-) on the other hand it has a great focal range & can be doubled (in camera digital zoom inkl. high res).

Are you like me and never watch videos that tell me what and what not to do?
Well, it depends on the topic! Some I want the exact steps and others no. It varies and there may not be a rhyme or reason as to why all the time! ;)
