Santa Claus has been given a new name and face. and the name is ?...... Lee Hoy 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Happy Thanksgiving Lee. Lots of good ideas for the wife to get me for Christmas. Showing her the video next.
Hahaha, this is hilarious but a great idea George!
I did a workshop in Wyoming several years ago with Olympus ambassador and Pulitzer winner Jay Dickman, staying overnight in Jackson Hole. Beautiful place that I hope to see again someday.
I love Jackson Hole and Grand Teton in winter! It is a very special destination at that time of year!
Thanks very much. I’d got most of my settings right but some I needed to change.
Glad the video helped! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi Lee. Even though I couldn’t see your images, I still feel like I learned a lot from this. Thank you so much for posting it. - Mick
You bet bud! I will rerecord at some point for better images!
Great packing ideas. Have a great trip!
Thanks David! I am excited!
Good packing list! Have a great trip!
Thank you sir!
@@leehoyphotography Are you planning to take a tripod?
@ most definitely!
Can you please share information on your RUclips channel about using lens coats or other types of lens protection, when shooting out in the elements, it is not a normal for me to be out taking pictures in weather is cold as -10 Celsius that is a warm day in the winter where I live a -30 Celsius day with no wind could actually feel warmer believe it or not, but if the wind whips up, I’m soon wanting to get back in the house or in the car.
With OM System, I never use any covers on my camera or lenses. The only lens protection I have is a nice looking lens wrap from Alphagvrd on my 150-400mm. If you shoot OM System, you don't need to worry about it. If you shoot another system, then some type of protection from moisture is good. I no longer use Lens Coat products as the quality sucks and they allow mold to grow under them after getting wet!
I’m gonna be using my new lens out in a minimum of -10 Celsius with snow blowing around from time to time and lying on the ground with my camera and lens, do you recommend I use a lens coat? And what are the best companies that make these type of lens covers, or do you think they’re a waste of money?
See comment on other question about this!
Hey Lee, thanks for doing all these videos, there is so much to take from them, I just wish my memory would retain them all. That said having got to the point of updating my laptop I am looking at getting photo editing software (currently I have none). I have looked at DxO for years and LR etc. My questions are endless as my head spins with all the knowledge that I gain from watching and reading stuff on internet but I will try to limit them as I know you are extremely busy. Is it worth getting the entire PhotoLab 8 or just the PureRaw4 to work with LR? The buying outright option as opposed to subscription is more appealing but only if it is suitable. I have the OM1 mkii and am wanting to do photo stacking but as yet haven't taken the plunge for either Helicon or Zerene, do you use either of these? If so would that nudge me in one direction for getting LR or DXO PhotoLab? I have tried to remember if you have covered this in any of your videos but have failed, I am sure that you must have done, apologies. When doing photo stacking are you able to do a group of images in DxO PureRaw so the are all the same settings, or would you do that elsewhere before putting into stacking software? Once again sorry for the ramblings. I am sure that once I take the leap all will eventually fall into place but thought I would take a punt from a trusted source that might have a valued opinion. I have tried looking at the DxO site today but it must be offline as there is just a message about something coming soon. If you have gotten this far in this ramble, I thank you!!!!
I would only get the PureRaw4 and use LR for the editing. I didn't like the PhotoLab as much as LR. I love the subscription as I get constant updates! I use Helicon for that, but for most people, they can use in camera focus stacking versus buying a software and doing focus bracketing! But I like Helicon as it is very easy to use! When doing focus stacking, I take my images through DxO PureRaw first and then into Helicon for stacking! Hope that helps!
@@leehoyphotography Wow thank you for replying (and so quickly too) and offering words of wisdom, great to know that is what you prefer. I have contacted the folks at Helicon previously about the remote feature and if it is compatible with OM cameras but had no answer. Maybe I will write again. I am finding the focus stacking feature in-camera a frustrating experience what with all the different parameters and the step differential value and number of photos taken. It seems so easy when folks share their experiences on the internet. I think Focus Bracketing is definitely the way forward and gives better control in the end. A shame as it was one of the reasons I purchased OM1 mkii but there are so many more reasons to smile about it. Thanks again Lee for replying, I didn't expect you to if I am honest.
@@banjowillowwarbler-gm4jk If you look, I have replied to all my comments thus far even though I travel about 270 days out of the year! i try to keep up!
@@leehoyphotography and we all appreciate it, well I definitely do. Hope all your travels coming up in future and all your workshops go well and you get some amazing images. You are truly dedicated to passing on your craft.
I want to see OM systems bring out an all new OM-1X with a minimum resolution of 24 megapixels at all new image processor, I want the new camera to be slightly smaller and slightly lighter and also with very slightly bigger buttons and dials, then was on the E-M1X, OM systems should seriously consider bringing out an all new OM-1X to complement big white and the other super Tele photos lenses they make, before making such a camera they should make sure they introduced all new camera smaller for the street and travel photographer. Otherwise this camera will get lotta opposition from those who feel that OM systems has forgot about them, which I feel is a problem right now, I want to see such an all new OM-1X she use with bigger lenses and I’m sure there are other wildlife landscape photographers that want to see such a hammer brought out as well. Can you please do a survey on your website asking that question.
I don't want to go back to the 1x model with a built-in grip! I like having the choice of adding one and not adding for landscape and macro! Don't care if we ever get a single extra megapixel, not needed. You can't want a bigger sensor and a smaller camera and lighter camera. They are already crazy light! OM hasn't forgot anyone, stop watching the stupid drama filled videos on YOuTube, they do those videos for lots of views. I am in the field for 270 days out of the year, I do many OM events and OM only workshops and never heard anyone say "they are being forgotten." NO ONE who truly knows OM System worries about this stuff. It is the stuff of RUclips hell. I don't need to ask the question, I am out talking to people ALL the time! Watch videos where you actually learn how to capture images, not what a camera company may or may not be doing!
Great video thankyou. Im thinking of getting the 150-600 lens
It is much closer in AF capability to the 150-400 than the 100-400! It is on sale right now!
PLEASE RESPOND - WHAT IS THE BEST UPSCALING AFTER THE CROP?
I use Topaz Gigapixel and try to get back to the same dimensions as the original! Does that help?
Thank you. I’ve watch this twice.
I love hearing that! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for your useful review. PureRaw 4 provides superb DNG files, and it was a nice bonus this month (November 2024) that DXO released version 4.6 which included the latest XD2s feature, which may also be found in Photolab 8. This was very decent of DXO, since they could easily have delayed XD2s until a future PureRaw 5 release.
Yep, love the software and very happy to give them my money based on the results of their software!! Thanks for watching!
Just ordered the om1mk2, getting one of my em1mk3 sensor modified for astro😊
That will be awesome! Hope you love the Mark II! I do!
i would love to see all the images you are showing here on another RUclips channel of yours, cant see the photos.
I will record this again here at home for better quality!
Thanks Lee for the great sharing,. I'm your avid follower from Malaysia. I wish the camera was at a better spot so I could admire those pic all during your presentation.
Yea, sorry about that, I was very limited on my options! I will re-record this someday when the setting is more conducive!
@@leehoyphotography Nothing to be sorry about. I enjoyed every min of your recording. Looking forward to your next video or training. Thank you.
I am from Ohio,
Well, then it isn't a big surprise! ;) I mean, from a scenery standpoint, it is limited.
Lee Great video lee. Love the concept of looking at an animal as an individual. They all have their individual personalities. That should be what you attempt to capture in your photo. As always looking forward to next Sunday. Great job.
Thank you George, much appreciated!
I wasted an afternoon´s shooting because I had not disabled the shutter button focus while using BBF. Thanks for the solve. Also, I had not realised the depth of field is so shallow, even for subjects 20m away, the DOF is only 25cms. I was always shooting wide open to blur the background. Great tips, much appreciated.🙏
My pleasure Mike, glad the video was a help to your photography!
Great discussion. I was an active film photog in my 20s. I believe I was at the state you describe then. I'm 62 now, just retired and just ordered an OM-1 Mark II and a 150-400. I know the challenge ahead of me is huge but this video gets me pumped to get to that state again. Thank you for your frankness. PS I had to Google "chimping". 🐵
I love hearing how excited you are! Get out and capture some great images!
Newbie question. OM says the shutters are rated for 400,000 actuations. If you shoot that many photos in one trip how does that work?
Well, that is for the mechanical shutter only, you don't wear out the electronic shutter! I shoot in electronic shutter 95% or more! And it is over the full year, not one trip! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@leehoyphotography Thanks Lee.
Found your channel recently, love it Looking forward to learning more
So glad you are enjoying it, thanks for being a part of my online community!
My biggest issue is inexperience in editing
That is true for most photographers so you are not alone!
I find the shutter on the mark 2 to be very touch sensitive moving the RF system.
Yes, it is easy to capture images using the electronic shutter! I like it, but it does take getting use to the sensitivity!
Another great video Lee. Very pleasing to hear your comments on the 12-100. Mine is just a week old and it is nice to know my research paid off and you have confirmed my choice. I am also really enjoying using it. Now I just need to figure how to do your masterclass! It would be another good decision.
Glad to hear that! Would love to have you in the mentorship program! Thanks for watching!

It was an amazing workshop!
What? I never thought I’d hear you divert from the chimping rule….🤡 rule
Deb, it is close to the holidays when we give gifts! ;)
Lee A great presentation. I'm starting to do some macro and enjoy it. Will be checking out your workshops for next year. Thanks again.
George, would love to have you join me on a macro workshop!
This was a phenomenal experience and I learned a ton! For anybody considering a trip like this, I highly recommend it. Thanks, Lee!
Thanks so much Steven! Finally home for more than 2 nights so responding to comments!
Hi, Regarding your issue with the OM-1 taking images when you lower the camera after a burst Ive shot Nikon for over 40 years and am very well experienced. Recently I switched to the Sony A1 with motor drive and had exactly the same issue as you which was completely random and very annoying. I even had the camera checked out by Sony and it came back without and issues discovered. After a few weeks the problem came back which was very frustrating and was very random. Again I thought it must be the camera but after a while I finally realised what was happening, when I lowered the camera after a burst the fleshy part of the palm of my hand was pressing against the shutter release button on the grip caused by the weight of the 600mm lens as it was lowerred . This never occurred on my Nikon's as the shutter button on the battery grip was well recessed, but on the Sony it wasn't. So I now always make sure the Grip shutter release switch is turned off. Problem solved, it may be worth looking at this on you OM-1 - Let me know of this helps.
I can 100% assure it wasn't from me still pushing the shutter button. The vertical grip button is located in such a way that the only time I have ever accidentally had this happen was with the camera sitting on my lap in a vehicle! The last firmware update has almost totally eliminated the issue!
You look healthy, Lee.. lost a few pounds 😀👍👍
About 62 so far! Thanks man!
Great video Lee and really wonderful images. Particularly loved the 12-100 pics. Have the 7-14 so maybe a look into the 12-100. Thanks
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video. I have chosen to buy Photolab 8 rather than just Pure RAW 4 and I see the benefits you describe. Also - a tip: once your image has processed and you are back in the (silly) catalogue which DxO insists on, I do two things - I hit numeral 7 key to add yellow colour tag to the processed file; I then right click the file and select "Go to Folder in Library" which immediately takes you to the original folder of your images where the processed one stands out in yellow. This avoids trying to find the folder manually. Cheers
Yep, one of my videos on here is about that very thing on how to go to the original folder. Thanks for watching!
Your video is excellent at explaining the sh2 mode, thanks a lot.
My pleasure Margaret, thanks for watching!
Just saw this video, Lee. Frankly ... WELL SAID!! I've been photographing professiionally for 17 years and am a partner in a fine art gallery in the Texas Hill Country. I switched to Olympus in 2019 and follow you now regularly because you ARE honest and say it like it is -- and you know what you are talking about! Thanks for being you!
Thanks James, I appreciate your support!
Hi Lee - another great and informative video - thx as always! 12-100 is a constant companion in my bag. Was wondering in the images you showed for this lens, particularly the river/mountain shots if you used a polarizer or not?
I don't remember all the images I showed, but I didn't for the mountains shots in Patagonia! I do use one on occasion though!
Zuiko 7-14mm is a very good super wide angle zoom and i have it too!
Love hearing how others enjoy their lenses! Thanks for watching!
Hi Lee, new to your content and quickly becoming engrossed in all the knowledge you are passing on! With your c1 settings - what AF Area configuration do you find most useful as a default. Thx in advance!
On the OM-1, I use All AF Points most of the time with AI Subject Detection and on the OM-1 Mark II I use the Large Box AF Points with Subject Detection. If I am tryhing to pick out a specific subject in a group of other subjects, I use the Small Box with AI Subject Detection. Hope that helps!
Thanks, Lee. I've had the LC-1 for some time now and you are definitely right that it is a versatile light source, even for some night photography. I was unaware of the small rig and just ordered it through your link! Photographed out in your area a couple of weeks ago while you were out of the Country--Fort Davis has gotten hard to eat food in now that the drug store only serves breakfast for hotel guests!
Thanks for the support James! Much appreciated! Yes, the hours for many restaurants out here is limited as they are family run and employees are limited!
Some great lights
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I started photography on safari in South Africa 40 years ago and could not agree with your approach more. I have spent many hours with lion, leopard and cheetah and capturing their personalities to me is very important. Capturing a female leopard with her cub sharing intimate moments and you don’t have to have the whole body of each animal. Getting the catchlight in an elephant’s eye surrounded by that textured skin, photographing a red billed oxpecker cleaning ticks off the lip of a white rhino. I love looking for those special moments.
Thanks for watching and commenting David! Great to hear from you!
Thanks Lee Great information. I'm going to check these babies out.
You are welcome George!
Not gonna lie, all the smallrig light's swappable attachments alone make me want to get one.
It is awesome to have those options in the field!
Just a thought, would it be possible to avoid problems with car headlights by temporarily covering the lens (like the old world portrait photographers) until the headlights moved out of shot? It would probably need good anticipation.
You would get gaps in the star trails by doing that! Good thought though!
Very informative video sir. However, you are a OM System ambassador. I understand you really can’t slam or talk ill of their products even though OM System may not be as good as the competitors when broken down into genre specific uses. I am a fan of Olympus mirrorless cameras, but in low light, the micro 4/3rd format is really substandard with any ISO over 6400 in low light. This is from my experience doing concept portrait photography. Now if OM System is only marketing the OM-1 II as a wildlife/bird photography camera only, then I would not be interested. However, can you advise on portrait uses for this camera? Thank you.
Were it not for some tests I did yesterday, shooting with the OM-1 Mk2 and the 100-400 at 6400 and 12800 iso, for the first time I've ever shot images at over 3200 iso I might have agreed with you Ed. I did this test just for the hell of it, with no doubt in my mind that the feather detail on the hummingbirds would be soft and the noise beyond excessive. The noise was excessive in the Raw files, but the images were very sharp. I think what made the difference was using Adobe Camera Raw's new AI de-noise feature, which I had never used before as I always shoot at 200 iso and very rarely at 400 iso. I first tried my 2 year old Topaz DeNoise program and the images looked crappy, as I expected they would. It was out of desperation, and partly because I wanted to prove all those OM System Ambassadors wrong that I then ran the files through Camera Raw. The IQ of these files at 12,800 iso processed in Camera Raw while using their AI de-noise was virtually indistinguishable from my normal iso 200 shots. I've never been more surprised in my life. Adobe has been sleeping for too many years with their noise reduction, but this new October release is beyond magic. It's like having full frame image quality with an m43 camera. I honestly thought many of these OM System Ambassadors who were advocating shooting at 3200 and 6400 were either conning me or had very low standards. I could not have been more mistaken. Noise is no longer an issue for me. I can't imagine detail much finer than a hummingbird feather, so to see the noise-free results along with tack sharp images surprised me more than anything I've ever experienced with digital photography. If you have Lightroom Classic or Photoshop I strongly suggest that you download Camera Raw 17.0 and process your images with their AI noise reduction. I think you'll be as surprised as I was.
If you watch my videos, you see that I am honest on all issues regardless of my role. You are VERY wrong on this, I have ISO images over 12800 you couldn't tell from a Sony camera. You just aren't doing one of the following: 1) exposing to the right 2) starting with a sharp shot 3) not cropping the crap out of the image and 4) dont' know how to post process correctly. I have several videos on here that will make you withdraw your comment on high ISO performance. I like to say to folks who say you can't shoot at High ISO with OM, "You may not be able to do so, but I can all day long." ;)
What are you thoughts on the 8mm f/1.8 fisheye pro for night sky photography?
It is a fun lens to use for that! It helps to place the horizon mid level to reduce the fisheye distortion. It isn't a cheap lens, but great quality lens!
Great video as ever. When I switched from FF I already had the Lee 150 filter system. When I got the 7-14, I bought the Lee adapter for this lens. I love using it with the 15 super stopper for seascapes etc.
Love it! Glad you are enjoying that lens, it is amazing!
Hi Lee. Since this video is a little dated, do you know if the 150-600 lens is compatible with sh2?
It is at up to 25FPS! Not the full 50FPS!
@ Got it. Thanks.
