    Very much older listener here. In the early 1970s I asked my boyfriend if he would consider changing his name when we married. He was emphatic that he had worked hard to make a name for himself. My back went up and I replied that I had, too. I kept my name which was not usual for the time or for my family. One of my sisters later kept her name. My first husband and I divorced. I kept my name again with my second husband. When he remarried, my first husband hyphenated his name. Both of our second marriages are going on 45 years.

    • @ivylasangrienta6093
      @ivylasangrienta6093 Год назад

      I hyphenated mine, because I love my last name and I'm the only one of my generation to carry it on. Got divorced and went back to just my original name, and would never change it again for anyone. Had a son and he now has my name, so at least the (very rare) surname carries on for one more generation.

    For the canceled wedding question, if she wasn't interested going, isn't close with the bride, and tighter budget wise, I think she was overly generous with the $200. I believe don't give out what you can't afford to lose, and so she shouldn't have given that much, especially if she has an issue with the bride regarding financial matters in the past. While yes the bride should return things, I think it's inappropriate to ask for the gift back, or try to sneakily get it back, because at the end of the day, it was a gift. Implanting the idea into a mutual friend, or just gauging what the bride is thinking seems like the best bet

      I would not even expect it to be the first thing to do. Like I would be fine with it taking like 3,4,5 months because I know its got to be stressful and you got to be hurting and sad. But I would just expect that they had normal etiquette and would send gifts back for something that never happened.

    10:45 Devin's answer to what she likes best about her job is about the most Finance answer I've ever heard. Things are right or wrong, black or white (or red, as the case may be), must be done today or can be done tomorrow, etc. I've worked in Finance support jobs before and often got the benefit of that without actually having to be a Finance person. It's really refreshing.

    I would probably not expect the money back from the wedding and be surprised if I got it back.. The problem with asking is the present is for both the bride and the groom so who do you ask for the money? What if you ask her because that's your friend but he ran off with the fund? Or the honeymoon was already paid for and non-refundable (which is likely), so it will take them a while to raise the money to pay people back..

      Like I would not ask for the money back, but I would expect it to come back to me. Like I get that it would probably take awhile to get back to me, because it got to be shit show, but I would definitely think they would be giving all the gifts back. 🤣 Like that would just be normal etiquette.

    For the name-changing question....in most, if not all, Hispanic/Latin countries...when you get married, the woman keeps her last name. If the couple has kids, their kids will carry both parent's last name. I'm one of them....I'm Puerto Rican and in my birth certificate I have both of my parents last name....and also, EVERYTHING you apply for or do in PR, you get asked for both last names...and they are not hyphenated.

  • @mariaam6235

    We had the EXACT conversation about name changing. It was really important to both of us but were on different sides: he wanted it changed to his and I wanted to keep it. While dating, this was the reason we broke up, but we got back together and while engaged, it became a hit topic again. No one was budging until we accepted to compromise and hyphenate. Both had cultural as a reason for our opinion.

Also with that guy, he does seem very controlling and not just unwilling to compromise but also very insistent on not even seeing her perspective even if he disagrees and personally I would suggest talking to her friends to see if this is a one off or if she just has love blinders on and this is a consistent thing other people have noticed

    200 bucks is nothing! We gave my SIL 1000 back in 2019 for their wedding, which first time it was cancelled due to COVID, and the second time just cancelled overall. So the money was never used. That was a lot of money for my husband and I because we were planning our wedding too, and we thankfully had the opportunity to get married in 2021 and her and her partner didn’t help us with any sort of financial assistance nor gift!! I’m slightly salty about that, not with them not helping, but just not giving us back the 1000! Also we found out later they were buying things, and I always wondered if what they purchased was with assistance from our 1000 bucks we gave them! if they decide to get married later they’re not getting any money from us, even though they’ve made comments and how they expect family to help again🙅🏼‍♀️ I’m sure they also didn’t return any money of other people they asked money from. So overall sucky situation!
