I've now learned, by the end on how to be a mechanic properly, thank you Rodney Dangerfield.
When I had my TEXACO Station back in the late 60 - 70s - - my famous warranty answer when a customer asked what is the warranty while paying the bill was - - - are you ready for this - - ONE DAY OR 10,000 MILES - - WHICH EVER COMES FIRST ! Now that got some mixed reactions from blank stares, to laugh, to Oh I Guess You Think That's Funny ! The last one ended up in everyone in the showroom laughing - - he was a good customer and great sense of humor.
I l4arned more about cars from my dad that never finished high school than most mechanics before fancy computers took over. Now you need a special computer to tell you what computer part of the car is bad so you can replace it.
That is true, but sadly without those computers we would still have 8 to 10mpg and with 4 dollar plus a gallon being the norm, it would erase your wallet faster than your partner at Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
The days when classic mechanics (myself included) could rebuild a 4bbl carb and change plugs and points and condensers are long gone. Now it's OBD II and at least you can purchase a Bluetooth module that will tell you error codes on the fly on your phone.
That's a huge plus when you need quick and accurate info and don't have a Chilton's copy available.
Is it a good thing? Yes and no. Because some error codes are actually engineering errors at the factory. Ford was bad for that in Explorers and Expeditions. Same stupid shit like emissions, cat converter, and sensors.
Nuisance faults.....I could go on, but I do miss the days of simplicity. Plugs you could change, carbs you could rebuild, and a tune up with a timing light. Ahhh memories...
@@deathstrike I would rather have a six cylinder 1966 ford pick up I can service myself which is dependable and very cheap on gas (up to 30mpg) as well.
@@deathstrike changing points and rebuilding carbs is nothing compared to the complexity in todays cars. They constantly push mechanics to learn and get smarter. That old school mechanic stuff was elementary. And that's coming from someone who can do both.

This skit is how I feel, after going to all three local mechanics, and having them totally screw me over.
Hope what you said is not true. I'm a mechanic (have been one for over 40 years) and I hate hearing stories of people who feel they have been cheated. This situation occurs usually because of three things:
1) The mechanic is incompetent (misdiagnosis, poor skill set, etc.) and does not correct the problem on the customers vehicle but still charges the customer for basically what amounts to fiddling on the car. If the problem is not resolved, the mechanic should not expect payment. Full stop. No excuses. There are more incompetent mechanics than there are intentionally dishonest ones.
2) There is a breakdown in communications and expectations are not met or managed between mechanic and customer - usually time of completion or final bill.
3) The customer's vehicle was returned in worse condition (dirty, scratched, damaged components, etc.) than when it arrived at the repair shop.
@@ronb1057 One mechanic dented my car & refused to pay for it, another charged 7 hrs for a 4 hr book rate job, the 3rd guy forgot to tighten battery cable clamps leaving me stranded at 10pm outside of town
