When I was in university about 3 or 4 years ago, my friend was really really sick and the only food we had in the college cafeteria was super oily, salty and it was all deep fried food. So I made her porridge using this recipe and it was the first time that month I saw her finish everything. Her mother and father actually messaged me on facebook to say thank you, and they told me they also always cook porridge for her since she was little whenever she got sick. Now I cook all kinds of porridge for my toddler, who just started to eat soft solid food. So actually Maangchi taught me not just how to cook, but also how to take care of other people. I really am so grateful for you.
Dear Maangchi, I can't thank you enough for posting this video. My mother just had open heart surgery, and she can only eat soups and other soft things, and she absolutely loves this recipe. Thank you so much for giving her a lunch she can look forward to, you have no idea how much it means to me.
this was the perfect thing to find posted.. my daughter (she is 20) is going to have surgery (gallbladder) right now she can't eat very many things without pain, & lastnight she was in so much pain she couldn't eat, I saw your video and made your soup this morning..she can eat it without pain... & she loves it ~! I added two kinds of mushrooms I had on hand & baby bok choy but everything else was the same ( I even had red & yellow peppers on hand) .. thank you so much (again)
I, too, have a wonderful memory of my father and soup. He learned how to make chicken or turkey and rice soup from his mother and I learned it from him. Now my children know how to make soup from a wonderful bone broth. He always made turkey and rice soup after Thanksgiving and Christmas, from boiling the pan drippings and the bones left over from the holiday turkey. I make chicken and vegetable soup at least once a month and I always think of him. He is gone, but his soup recipe lives on!
it was stormy and rainy outside today. so i made this porridge the first time. it was so good. really warms you up from the inside even with such a weather outside!
I'm an international student studying in the United States. Although my college's near an Asian supermarket, I hardly find good Vietnamese spices and I can only find Korean, Chinese and Japanese spices . Your recipes have been helping me a lot to "survive" because I really miss my home country food, and the college's dinning halls food are not really tasty. Thank you so much for your contribution and non stop uploading delicious Korean cuisine.
Hi everybody! Thank you so much for your nice comments and sharing your touching story here! English and Korean captions are coming soon (영어, 한글자막 곧 올릴께요). The full recipe is in the link in the description box.
fatcat sneezing i think its not about how much she earned from posting her vids on utube but its how she wants to share her learnings in cooking korean recipes..
This recipe makes me think of an italian one: risotto, or minestra di riso! It's funny how food and tradition can be similar across the whole world. I always love your recipes, and your stories make me want to meet you in person. You are so lovely! Thank you for sharing!
oh mangchi this porridge looks so yummy and healthy is a little similar with a chilean porridge called "carbonada" i remember my mommy when i eat it...thank you so much i will try cook this!
I made this for my mother today who is recovering from surgery and she loved it. My mum is in alot of pain and so she doesn't have much of an appetite and this is the first real meal I've been able to get her to eat. Thank you so much, Maangchi, I'm really grateful because you gave me a way to help my mum and show my love. Really, thank you so much! You're the best!
I made this when I was recovering from my wisdom teeth surgery it was amazing I ate the whole pot in 2 days and I guess it's a placebo but I felt like it helped me heal faster
+carlosth3 I don't think it's a placebo. Certain foods seem to really make the body feel good. I made American-style chicken noodle soup when my husband was sick. It was his first time eating it (because he is not Aemrican) and after a couple of spoon fulls he said he was beginning to feel better. This porridge seems to have that same effect.
+melodramatic7904 and organic farm raised chickens are especially different and better for making soup like base (like this recipe with chicken-but use bones in boiling to get broth) for getting better.
I love your videos Mangchi! I just made this for my auntie who's sick. Also it rained last night so just felt like this would be great for breakfast! It tastes so gooooood!
Hello my dear Maangchi, your cooking is an art. God bless you and your family. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes. That soup not only look delicious, its very healthful as well. Bon Appetite. Alicia.
Delicious!!! Finally tried to make it and it was amazing. My husband is on a stricked diet because of his stomach aches. He loves it! he asked for seconds!!! thank yoi!!!
Maangchi, this porridge recipe sounds delicious, but what I absolutely loved was your story about cooking for your dad. It was so bittersweet and moving! Thank you for sharing it with us! I'll definitely think about you and your dad whenever I make this.
Korean foods are spicy and full of vegetable. That's why I like eating Korean foods without worrying about gaining weight. Anyway, I have just show your kimchi recipe and my mother loves it so much
I love porridge! I think it's a stable in most Asian families. My favorite is with fish. Also, I love it when you share a story behind a dish. I think food and story just go together :)
My mother died of cancer 3 years ago and my eyes teared up when you spoke of your father. Love your recipes and videos. You are amazing lady and the recipe looks so good!
Aww i love that each recipe of yours has a story a memory that you remember whenever you are cooking. I think that what makes cooking more meaningful😍😍😍
This will be perfect! My father is sick, he has a tumour growing in his stomach and has to have surgery on April 22. He might have to take his stomach out. This recipe would be perfect to make, as he is only allowed to have soft food after the surgery. Thank you so much Maangchi for sharing this recipe!
The Aura Tree My father actually just had his surgery done on the 22nd. YES my father is alright, but he no longer has a stomach, as the tumour was compromising the esophagus. As each day passes, he is recovering a lot more from the procedure. From now on he'll have to be eating soft foods, and a lot of liquids. Thank you for asking. :)
Thank you for sharing about your father. I miss my father very much after losing him too. I agree, even though they may not be here with us we have the terrific memories.
A few days ago I was very sick and my fiancé made me a soup similar to this; I asked for some vegetables and rice in it so it would be easy to digest as well as nutritious and tasty and it turned out similar to this soup. I became healthy from his soup and his love, so of course your father must have felt better from this soup and the love and care you put into it!
I'm going to try this recipe! I want to feed my toddler this because it looks so nutritious, healthy, and tasty! I'm really hoping my daughter who is a very picky eater will like this. Thank you for sharing this recipe!!

Hello Maangchi! Your recipe is very similar to a burmese dish called "saambyo" that my mom taught me .We use goat meat(Lamb) instead of beef.My parents were born in Burma(Rangoon) but moved to India when they were still young.I can almost taste Your dish.I'm guessing it tastes the same...I love it.Thanks for sharing.

I love your cooking Maangchi. This is perfect, My fathers is sick and i was looking for Porridge recipes. THANK YOU!!! God Bless and more power. By the way, I made your Kimchi recipe. It was so delicious. Love it! :-)
This looks so delicious. I have to find a good Korean market here in Texas to get some fish sauce and some other things you use often. I look forward to making this.
You can find fish sauce at any Asian grocery store. Sometimes they even sell it at large mainstream supermarkets. It's great for flavoring soups, as it adds another dimension other than just salty.
These rice porridges are fantastic. As someone with stomach issues, they're great. The porridge itself is easy on the stomach, and you can add any flavours you want to it.
Maangchi, could you please share if there is a vegetarian porridge recipe. My father just suffered a massive heart attack I want to make it for him. We are all vegetarians. Thank you!
Actually you can skip the beef in the recipe to make a vegetarian version. And also if you like to make the porridge more savory, add vegetable stock instead of water. My homemade vegetable stock recipe is here. www.maangchi.com/recipe/chaeso-gukmul
My boyfriend is sick, so I'm going to ale this tomorrow! He usually eats Chinese style porridge when he's sick, so I thought I would give this a try. He has liked all your recipes I've made Maangchi! Thank you.
You are just all heart. You don't know this but we've been in a relationship for the past three years. I have you in my ears and your stories gives me strength to power through what is a rough patch in my life stories. The food is just the extra. And of the best kind. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Very nice recipe please kindly let me know if instead of fish sauce what other ingredient could be added
Use soup soy sauce (light colored soy sauce). www.maangchi.com/ingredient/soup-soy-sauce
