For the gradients the way I do it is I select the colors I want to make as a gradient, put them on their own layer then Alpha Lock it. Then go to the icon in the top left, the magic wand, and go to Gaussian blur. Easiest gradient
Okay I know this was a while ago but also if you long press on your eraser ubber it switches to your current brush so say your using the water color brush but you are using a monoline eraser you can easily switch. Do the same thing to your brush it switches to your previous brush
I'm new to Procreate and absolutely obsessed with it! Your videos have been so incredibly helpful in making my intro to Procreate easy and fun as opposed to overwhelming and stressful. Thank you!!
Hey there. The quick line shapes doesn't work for me for some reason. "Quickline Created" appears when I long press but the shape doesn't get created... Can you help, please?...🤯
Bought an iPad Air and Procreate based on your videos and I love it! My drawing habits have increased about 1000%. Thanks Brad for all your wonderful content!
Great video! For those that want to shapes to be continuously editable and resized you can always make the shape it's own layer. You don't get the point-based "vector" control but the selection/transform options make up for it.
Thanks for the tips Brad! A tip those with the 2nd gen pencil might like, I set my preferences so that I double tap the pencil to bring up the copy/paste menu. No more 3 finger swipes. Keeps my screen cleaner that way. A dirty screen seems to wear on my pencil nibs. 🤓. Also, have you ever shared what pressure curve you use? And what brush do you use for your line art? Thanks!!
Very nice update Brad! I have been using Procreate for 3 years and never used a reference layer 🙈 I’m definitely going to see if there’s a use case for it in my lettering workflow ☺️
You just saved me so much time, thank you! I’ve been enjoying your videos for a while now and this was what I needed being new-ish to procreate. I got your brushes and am eager to goof around with them and bought your course too. Now I can learn to use this app and tools more effectively instead of doing everything by hand.
Thank you so much for the explanations. What is the deciding factor in using SELECT as opposed to REFERENCE in a layer? I like to shade my lettering on a separate layer and ultimately I always need to go back and do clean up and erase ‘overspray’.
Great list, Brad! Thanks for sharing. I'd be interested in hearing about your top-down camera setting. I'd be interested in knowing if you are able to draw comfortably without the top of your head getting in the shot. I tend to lean in a lot, so are you pulling back to compensate? I'm not sure if that's within the scope of the videos you do, though Thanks again!
All of these features are wonderful! Making a gradient with either a brush or other technique and combining it with the Clipping Mask so I can scale and adjust it is the latest trick I've been playing with.
Hello from korea! You are sunshine of my life. Thank you for those useful and detail tips!! I pushed likes and subcribes. Really want to learn how to be a pro-creater
Thanks for this! Quick suggestion for taking your video production up another level: make sure you lock exposure in camera before shooting. That will make your video not get washed out when looking at a darker screen. Thanks for the great videos!
Great advice! My new camera has been pretty good about that but I did notice as I was going from the dark interface to the light one it was getting over/under exposed.
Hi brad! Just bought your vector class on Udemy. My second course on Affinity Designer. So far so good. However, I’ve found the lock feature in that the layers panel to ONLY keep he object from being moved. It is still editable, unlike even the manual describes. 👊🏼
Mate - this is such a helpful video. Thanks so much for taking the time to update in line with the ever advancing app and technology. Huge fan of your channel and your art and appreciate the work you put into it. Big love from the UK 🇬🇧❤️👍🏻
I am a super baby when it comes to art and i ended up picking up an ipad and apple pencil during a sale at best buy! I have been having a lot of fun with procreate and this video has opened my eyes to so many tips and tricks I was needing!!! Alpha lock is my new bff
ALPHA LOCK. Thank you SO freaking much. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how the heck to do that! I've been using the select and then add a layer to get that effect! Alpha is so much easier to use, and to see!
I have your course already. I have so many things going on, from Affinity Designer (have that one too) to Photo. I’ve had Procreate since the beginning, and I would play around with it every now and then, but had NO idea it was so powerful. Love your stuff, and I’ve also signed up for the newsletter! I’m looking forward to the brushes!!!
Super video skipper. Haven’t even got a iPad that I can draw on yet (using a iPad Air 2 currently) and I want to get a iPad Pro and procreate to do some leisure drawing so this video has sealed the deal for me. Just to get the money together now. Thanks
It's great, too. They've stepped up their game a lot over the last year or so. It used to be fun (and pretty good), but the features they've added make it nothing short of capable of professional work.
Christoph Riess well, if you’re not going professional it’s a little expensive compared to other apps like idk tayasui’s sketches or something. But I didn’t say it wasn’t worth it
great tip vid dude. just wanted to throw out there, you can do gradients with using the Gaussian Blur as well. that way you don't have to save a ton of brushes. just do your color at one side of the screen and swipe the blur all the way up.or use one dark tone and one light tone. takes so experimenting but it's how i do gradients. just trying to be helpful! thanks again for the video.
i wish they would remove the layers limit on the regular ipads. i know its all about the RAM but i would sacrifice stability and speed for a little bit layers or bigger canvas
I LOVED this video. I am very new procreate user and you covered a lot of techniques I have been struggling with. Unlike many videos I have tried, I finally found a voice that was clear and easy to understand. You have a new fan that is happy to subscribe. (Sorry to be such a RUclips noob but where do I find this course and discount you refer to in this video? … every video says look “down below” … and I don’t know where that it????)
brad! I love you so much!! I had no idea about the reference layer feature. I would usually just duplicate my line work to put my color on another layer. but it was highly impractical.
I am not an artist, I’ve never used any drawing program, just a couple of weeks ago I bought my iPad. Should I purchase procreate? Because when I come across some of the drawings that has been done on procreate, it pulls me in.
Dude this helped me SO MUCH!! I've only recently gotten my ipad and procreate and this has helped solve soooo many of the obstacles i've bumped into XD thankyou so much for such an informative and clear video...really appreciate it
Hey, great video, very helpful. I have a question I was wondering if you could help me with. I accidentally filled my outline layer with color and saved it yesterday. Is it possible to delete the fill without deleting the outline? The outline is relatively detailed, so going in with an eraser tool and manually deleting the fill would take forever. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this! When I first got procreate it took me about an hour to find out were the eye dropper tool was, I didn't even know procreate had those other features till this video, it's gonna be so much easier and faster now to make art! Again thanks so much! 😄
You can actually continue to edit the shape and edit any shape or drawing you make or any portion of your drawing using the arrow and select tool. In fact I am surprised you left out this feature as it’s a very awesome feature and you alter images in many ways and mover it around. I suspect you’ll be making another procreate video at some point in the future and if you do make another video include this tip.
Hi, thanks for good advice and tips. i'm totally fresh with procreate. I wonder if it is possible to get a ruler so I can, for example, draw a straight line in the center from bottom to top or from side to side in center or for example exactly 10 cm in
Space Pirate Art and Design YES! Upvoting this comment. Savage Interactive did a demo on doing gradients this way some point last year over on Instagram. It’s super easy to do, and I think it allows for more variation and control over gradients than using just a brush.

Great video. Your videos have sold me on the iPad Pro and Procreate as the way I'll be going. I own the affinity Suite for my MBP and I'll also add those to the iPad. Once I can afford the iPad I'll sign up for your Procreate course. I'm already taking your Affinity Designer course.

Noob here on procreate: this video is incredible. I was going to take so long to discover some of these. Thank you and one thing I have no idea what it means - when you resize the canvas, - what the number of layers means?
Fernanda Nevitiv da Costa Maximum number of layers. As the canvas gets bigger, you get less layers because of how big the canvas is. The smaller, the more layers! Hope this helped :)
Since you cover both Apple and Windows topics, as a subscribers I would appreciate it if you made it clear early one (in the title would be best or in the comments) which environment your video is aimed at. I'm always interested in new tools but only those that work in Windows or Linux. My Apple days have ended. Thanks for a great channel.

As a new Procreate user, this video was EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!

To add on to this awesome list, if you long-tap the color selector circle in the top right corner, it'll actually give you the previous color.

Thanks alot for this. The reference layer tip fix My issues I had with fill coloring in procreate
I've never had an iPad. I just ordered one.
I'm excited to say the least.
I can already tell after the first 45 seconds this video is going to be a game changer for me 😁

I like both videos: this one and the 2016 version. You didn't go over the perspective guides this time around though. Is that still a feature?
Brad, I love your videos! Always very enjoyable and a lot of cool content. Thank you! Bought your courses for procreate and affinity design right now!

Hey Brad, I have found that you can achieve good gradient effects using Gaussian Blur :)

Very instructional video. Thank you, Brad! Are you using an iPad? If you are, which model is it?
3 years later still helpful
I usually just use the soft airbrush for gradients.
The smudge tool is really good these days. Gives you really silky and natural gradients.
U can also use Gaussian blur
Wow Thanks Brad!!! I always learn something new when I watch your videos.
Procreate 5 is due out by the end of the year! (2019). Do you have any info re: device compatibility? Do you know if the new features will work with the original Apple pencil? Thanks!

Thanks Brad that reference thing was te most usuful when I started working on precreate some time ago with your previous video. Good to see you updated it. (I've got some new tips this time too)
I know ProCreate very well but watching the video to support you, Brad!
I've been using procreate for a long time now and I'm very satisfied with it. Recently, I just found out and came across an app called "Artbook Pro - Digital Painting" I haven't tried it yet, but it looks very much similar to Procreate. Have you heard or checked it out yet?

Brad! Where can i get your gradients brushes? I love them! Thank you for your many awesome videos!
I use gradients with layers, there's an option that lets you make a gradients layer and you can customize it
Hey Brad, great video as usual! I just wanted to know if there was an advantage to using alpha lock over clipping masks?😅
You can accomplish a lot of the same effects. Alphalock will cut down on layers but it comes down to preference.
Brad Colbow thank you for the reply :)
I already knows that this was gonna be the most useful video I will have watch
great video, its been a few years since Ive used procreate so Ive been watching videos on how to relearn it, btw I saw a video on gradients using two solid colors and then Gaussian blur them together.
this is super super helpful, i learned a lot watching your vid. seems like theres still a lot of thing i didnt knew about procreate
this was by far the most helpful tutorial i’ve seen !!!! thank you so much
That reference layer feature is awesome! Is there a similar feature in photoshop?
Hello, I'm wondering if buying iPad pro or Wacom, the general question is - does apple pencil support rotation sensitivity as Wacom pencils do?
really hoping that procreate inputs fonts for comic use. im want to create comics on procreate and with the new shape tools its made it far easier! the only downside of course being that you cant input fonts and have to move your image file onto another program in order to do so, but i dont see fonts being that much of a stretch in the far future!

Awesome! I just picked up Procreate and this video is a godsend! Thanks.
I’ve been using Procreate for about a week, I thought I knew everything about it but turns out, I DIDNT! Thanks a lot Brad Colbow, I will defiantly use these options!
What gear are you using? Can I do all of this with the old iPad pro?
Thanks for the update! I’m glad crop and resize is now in Procreate!
Omg THANK YOU for this video. I wish I knew about the color drop threshold! I've gone back and had to redraw linework just to fill it SO many times.
Are you using the new ipad pro or the 2017 one?
Oh MAAAAAN!!! I didn't know about the reference layer option. I could've saved many hours on my children's book! I spent a LOT of time coloring inside the lines on a different layer (setting the colors to "multiply").
Me: buys a wacom intuos medium
Also me 5 mins later: * watches this video *
Me again: I WANT THE IPAD PROOOOOOOOO
Me again: Oh right I'm poor as heck
Edit: glad to be poor :) Wacom is awesome. Maybe not so cool as an ipad, but perfect for drawing.
It’ll be the worth the wait my friend
Procreate also works great on a regular iPad.
Dude literally same
I’m telling u use ur photoshop ur gonna regret it
Have you thought about buying a refurbished ipad pro 2018 My daughter bought one it works great Alot less money.
Can I use the drag and drop fill tool capability with my finger? I prefer not to use a stylus. So far I havent been able to get it to work. Thanks!!
Just asking, but are we allowed to use the free gradient brushes on your website for professional projects?
You’re a genius! Thanks for the vid. Finally someone who explains things well.
Hi Brad,
I'd like to create a simple stick figure animation. Is it possible on procreate? I'd love to see step by step instructions. If not procreate, would you recommend another app? I'm using an ipad pro.

Hope you have a great day ❤️

Thanks , useful video.
Hi can you tell me how I. Can get your free brushes you talk about in you video and we’re would i find more information on your courses . Adam’s great videos by the way
You too!
Thanks same to you
Does procreate have any sort of ability to use a color wheel? That’s my preferred method for picking colors
Ton of useful features I didn't realize Procreate had. Thanks, Brad!
Great tips for a new user, and efficiently communicated! Thanks Brad

I signed up for newsletter and was wondering how I get access to the Procreate brushes
WOW... I had no idea about colourdrop threshold.... THANK YOU... O_O that is gonna be a lifesaver for concept art and costume design.
Is there a way to make a pattern as a fill color swatch? Corel has that and I love it.
