I'm a wildlife conservation student and just as a heads up for everyone, sustainable palm oil is often a misleading term. It can be used to describe the cutting down of palm and replacing it with another tree, but the new tree isn't necessarily palm, it can be a tree of much less ecological value but they can still call it sustainable as they are technically 'replacing' the tree. It's worth investigating what the definition of sustainable is in a lot of cases and thinking critically about it if you can be bothered to do so. That being said, sustainable palm oil is probs better than nothing :)

I’ve been to Borneo Malaysia and seen the destruction first hand, it was utterly depressing. I would love to know the parameters to classify palm oil as sustainable. As far as I could see the damage had already been done, you can’t grow back forests that look thousands of years to develop. Also sunflower/ rapeseed oil can be produced much closer to home so also need to take that into account when considering the sustainability of a product.

I can't post links here but if you do a google research on chemical palm oil trees workers use you'll see it. Plus there's abuse going on on RSPO CERTIFIED palm oil plantations...many oils are mixed and put on a certified label...no need to be an expert just do some research and you'll find it. Any industry that does what it does to nature and people can never go sustanaible in only 20 or 30 years, we need more time than this. Search for the last report (2021) of globalwitness dot org article called "the true price of palm oil" there are many others. Sustanability can not come in a few years not even decades with this type of companies but greenwashing can in only 2 or 3. It's up to us not be that naive !

I am vegan and avoid palm oil. I respect the opinions that you expressed but as a tropical ecologist (masters degree and over 15 yrs experience working with NGOs), I don't believe that palm oil can truly be sustainable. There is a lot of literature about it in scientific journals. Please read these to fully understand and make an informed decision. I have also been to Malaysia and seen the devastation myself - deforestation, loss of habitat to wildlife, and also destruction of marine ecosystems due to run-off from the palm oil industry. Most of the foods that I eat don't contain cheap oils anyways though - for example I prefer the taste of nut butters that don't have any added oil. Just the nuts. If I get products with oil, it would be "quality oils" in hummus, pesto, etc.
edit: Since a lot of you have asked about "quality oils" - I was referring to oils that are not cheap filler oils and are not really needed in the product. For example, olive oil in hummus and pesto would be a "quality oil" vs palm oil or sunflower oil in bouillon or nut butters where it is used by the company to save money. Therefore I wasn't referring to the type of oil itself but how it is used. However I completely understand that these type of quality products might not be in someone's budget or be available (I don't have time to get into food deserts, etc but sadly a lot of these oils are used in products in areas where there is a lack of access to nutritious and healthy foods and this might be your only option). So of course do what is best for your budget. Also, I completely respect that some people are oil free and think that all oils are not quality and should be avoided - you do what is best for you! Avocado oil is an entirely different topic as that also is typically produced in a way that is negative to the environment and human wellbeing. Unfortunately there probably isn't a "good" substitute for palm oil since Madeleine is correct in that oils that are typically used as a substitute for fillers do usually have other negative consequences such as that they use more land to produce the same amount of oil. However their overall environmental footprint might be less if you take into consideration the entire lifecycle of the product - there is a lot to consider and a lot of research that still has to be done on this plus the impact varies depending on where the product is produced and where it is being shipped to. That is why it is best to use products that don't require these filler oils if you have the access and the budget. If you can't avoid palm oil completely it is best to use the "sustainably certified" palm oil as there is a chance that it could be more sustainable than the non-sustainable palm oil.
Then there are other products that are more difficult. Example, vegan butter. I use Miyoko's because she doesn't use palm oil, her packaging is 100% compostable, and I am supporting a small vegan company. She does use coconut oil, cashews, and sunflower oil, which do have environmental impacts. However all foods have some level of environmental impact and I think that these oils/fats are less damaging to ecosystems, animals, and people than palm oil (based on the literature searches I have done and talking with experts). Yes, it is more expensive but I don't use butter very often so it works for me. Plus I don't think that any vegan butters are certified sustainable (but please correct me if I am wrong). So, if you can afford it, this really is the best sustainable butter in the US (I have no idea about Europe!). Bottom line - don't let it overwhelm you and just do the best you can "to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation".
Another thing to consider. Madeleine is correct that some of the sustainably certified palm oil farms are small landowners and we would want to support them. HOWEVER, large corporations can be certified to be sustainable as well so you don't know which farm the oil in your product is coming from.

I hope things have actually changed with the palm oil industry. I wrote a uni paper back in 2017 and concluded that even RSPO sourced palm oil isnt sustainable. Back then when I researched, I found that they're allowed to mix sustainable and non-sustainable palm oil and are legally allowed to still call it sustainable. What I can remember, I think it was even 50/50 mix... I also found that 2/3 of ALL products contain palm oil... and they don't have to lable it on cosmetics. There's a list if you search on Google, it contains the hundreds of names that palm oil can have. So even if you think you're buying something without palm oil, it could still contain it... and likely not the "sustainable" kind. Palm oil is almost impossible to avoid, unless you go raw. Of course RSPO has to tell you that it's more sustainable, but I would love a video where you look into their process and what actually accounts to the label "sustainable". As I wrote in the beginning, I hope the industry has changed. I love what you do Maddie! Idk, I just hope you've done the research before giving this much credit to an organization that might not be as great as you're making them look.

    After watching:
From the research that I’ve done post watch, don’t trust this aspect with American grocery shopping. I love your videos Maddie but have to disagree about "sustainable" palm oil as many people have mentioned below. Also, you can't be impartial if you're being paid by someone who benefits from the sale of palm oil. Boycotting palm oil isn't being uneducated, it's feeling strong enough about an issue you don't want to be involved in it. Like veganism. And comments regarding over consumption of other oils in its place is tricky because if everyone chose an oil harvested closer to them/less air miles/etc it would probably cause less overconsumption of one certain oil. It's never black and white though. All of our food habits are so far removed from past generations where simple wholefoods predominated rather than ultra processed foods where ingredients like palm oil are favoured due to its availablity and low cost.

I'd just like to add that if palmoil is RSPO certified it's BS! The whole problem with palmoil is that the ground isn't usable anymore after harvest. I don't remember for how many years but definitely more than 2. Which makes the farmers want to get rid of more rainforest so they can plant more (obviously because they need to feed their family) or the big enterprises just get rid of a big piece of forest so they can do more at once etc.. not quite sure how it's possible to do that sustainably?

I'm also kind of disappointed that you're not sayin where you're getting the info from because brands can obviously tell you anything that doesn't mean it's true.. I used to work at a chocolate factory and first of all: just because there is a label on the packaging doesn't mean the materials used in this exact product are certified it just means that in a years worth of production you need to used a certain % of the certified materials. The % depends on the laws of the country I believe. And 2nd: my friend from there did a research paper about rspo certified palmoil and his conclusion was that it's not actually sustainable. It is a little better for the environment and humanity than regular palmoil but not actually good. If you google rspo problems you'll find a lot really quick supporting that.. I will definitely still not be buying palmoil unless I absolutely have to

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  2 года назад +34

Yes I do! Certifications like MSPO are working with smallholder farms and preventing the deforestation caused by non-sustainable palm oil.
If we totally boycott something but don’t take into account the alternatives that are being used instead as a result of this boycotting, we are missing the whole picture. As I shared in the video, so many vegan products are using other vegetable oils in replacement of palm oil, likely because these brands are fully aware that many vegans avoid this ingredient. However these vegetable oils use more natural resources to create the same yield of useable oil as palm oil. The world will never be perfect, and I typically don’t buy many products with palm oil in them anyway because of my diet. But if I am to purchase a packet of biscuits or some vegetable stock I’m going to opt for the one that is certified over the one that isn’t. Learning the difference is key because if we simply boycott palm oil altogether I don’t think it would be as effective as putting pressure on brands using palm oil (that is still the most widely used vegetable oil despite boycotting campaigns) to be certified sustainable and encouraging consumers to check this certification

I guess that we will never be able to get rid of palm oil now that it has been accepted in the food industry unfortunately, but we can choose variety, because variety is key ! Palm oil is absolutely awful to health just like any oil that solidifies like coco oil, etc if you only take one type of oil...the best one is olive oil that's for sure but not all the time too.

my understanding from research done is that these countries are making millions out of allowing their land to be slashed and burned to grow palm oil so they will be more than willing to certify the product . Certified and uncertified oil goes in to the same production factories abroad so it’s all but impossible to guarantee that the ‘certified’ oil used in well meaning brands is actually correct. Also how can a product be classed as sustainable when to grow it means destroying rainforests, driving locals out of their villages and animals to the point of extinction. These are not vegan principles surely? Sorry Maddie, I’m passionate about this one and we will have to agree to disagree 🙏🏻

I understand that palm oil can cause these issues, but so can other vegetable oils. I even boycotted palm oil for years. Sadly, no food is without destruction. Even almonds, cashews, coconuts, vegetables etc all cause harm to animals, wildlife and our environment.
If we are to buy products from the supermarket that contain palm oil (because it’s everywhere) it’s good to focus on certified sustainable palm oil over oils we cannot trace. Like I mentioned in the video, we are swapping out palm oil in vegan processed foods for other vegetable oils that require far more natural resources to produce the same yield. And we have no knowledge of where these oils have come from or the sustainability of them.
Nothing is perfect, but I like to know that if the option is there then I can choose something that has certification. MSPO is a good example of certification that is focussing on smallholder farms and preventing deforestation.
As palm oil is the most widely used oil, I was keen to educate my audience that if you’re going to buy it, to look for these labels.

This is a very interesting video and thank you for prompting us to think about sustainability in our everyday choices, especially food shopping. I’m honestly not sure how to make such decisions because I find the information to be partial or biased for most things. Regarding palm oil and sustainable palm oil, I’m too skeptic to believe the institutions that provides the sustainable label are not corrupt as many others that provide food labels. The idea that reduced items go straight to the bin is not true either. Most retailers have MANY steps in place to reduce food waste and reducing items is the first step (and the only one that we see as customers). As I said, quite often I feel the information about sustainability is incomplete. For instance, I’ve been thinking and researching about electric and hybrid cars. I can find data on reduced carbon footprint for using those cars but I can’t find data comparing the whole carbon footprint cycle, including manufacturing the car and recycling the batteries. So I honestly don’t know if that’s a better choice and might be lying to myself that I’m doing something good for the environment when I can’t find all the data. How do others feel about such things? Do you also feel that often there’s just partial information attempting to manipulate our choices and play on our personal values of sustainability and caring for the animals?

A great budget shopping in Sainsbury's. I have spent £15.00 per week in Lidl. My nearest supermarket is a Lidl a 15 minute walk away but Aldi and Tesco between 25-30 minutes walk away so it means taking longer to walk there and using either a bus or taxi to get back home. Palm oil regardless whether it's sustainable or not isn't the healthiest because like coconut oil it contains high levels of saturated fat which increases heart disease risk. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕 Madeleine & Alex.

I have loved your Reno videos but soo loved you bringing back these food shop vids!! Ah so amazing :) if i am honest I have in most recent days heard of articles saying palm oil research shows links to it helping cancer spread. I am not sure if it is correct or not as i have been skeptical about articles but do not know if it is true facts :/ so ever since hearing it i see the words palm oil and it scares me a bit. On the back of your video i now am educated in knowing the labelling of sustainably sourced palm oil so i will check that from now :)

Yes I do avoid palm oil. It’s fattening, and unsustainably sourced on the whole. The peanut butter that I buy doesn’t contain any oil.
I live in Italy and eat olive oil. It’s possible to buy the oil which is produced from trees that I can see out of my kitchen window. 🫒

You are so fortunate to live in such a vegan friendly part of the world! I have often thought this when I watch you shop. I moved to the rainforest of NW Panama where United Fruit & Chiquita had plantations in the 20th century. Palm oil here is not sustainably produced and neither are most vegetables grown organically. My eyes have certainly been opened here! There are more vegans living here than we originally thought (great!) but there is still a lot of social animosity and need for education. An opportunity 😊 Thank you & Alex for sharing your efforts

I eat a whole food plant based diet and I deliberately avoid palm oil for the same reasons that you mention. I don't believe there is such a thing as sustainably sourced palm oil. They still chop down thousands of acres of tropical forests to plant palm oil trees. We need to stop disforestation. Forests such as the amazon and the tropical forests of Indonesia are the lungs of the world. In addition, I avoid rapeseed oil because in the growing of rape seed the plants are sprayed 20 times with chemicals during it's growing season. I know this because I live in the countryside surrounded by farmland and I see it happening. I try to always buy organic fruit and veg to support the organic movement, also I don't like the idea of consuming poisonous chemicals

Researchers have found that creating synthetic replacements for palm oil could still be years away; consequently, more attention should be focused on making existing production processes more sustainable. Despite the significant environmental impact of palm oil production, none of the existing alternative products are currently economically or environmentally viable at scale, according to researchers at the University of Bath’s Centre for Integrated Bioprocessing Research (CIBR) and Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies (CSCT).

Hi Maddie! I would love to see a video like this (if you have the option of doing it!) about using food that would otherwise go into landfill - I will preface this by saying I am super lucky where I live in Nottingham, we have two social supermarkets that redistribute surplus food, and I also use Olio a lot (would really recommend!) and Lidl does a £1.50 box which contains food that would otherwise go to waste (I don't know if that is rolled out across the country or is just here in Notts). I think it would be so cool to see what recipes you could create with food that's 'rescued', I was so interested by your comments on how to reduce waste by buying reduced food and thought this might be a logical progression! Thank you so much for creating such incredible vids- from a very newbie vegan, you are bringing me so much joy and inspo!

Being British-Nigerian, I used to put palm oil in almost all of my soups. However, once I discovered it has other oils mixed in, I have decided to stick with olive oil instead. Another thing, living in England - a temperate country - requires that we should use oils of a runnier nature than either palm or coconut. The reason being is that during winter/autumnal months, we don't want vegetable saturated oil to stick to our arteries.

I'm surprised you managed to film in a Sainsbury's. My friend and I once saw a department sign in one of their stores that said deserts instead of desserts. He took a photo and then we were quite quickly approached by security and told we couldn't take photos in there.
I suppose they've relaxed the rules as it was about 7 years ago.

Good piece of advice. Definitely will use sustainable palm oil at least because it's the only vegetable oil that is not afraid to stand up against the critics and came up with own sustainability certification schemes. Are other oils willing to do the same?

  • @krystleboss8573

It’s not just about oil. The amount of products made from palm kernels makes it the most efficient commodity that oil is made from and it wouldn’t be possible to have enough land globally to grow all of the alternative crops to replace all of the products produced from a single crop.

Sorry, vegan or not, love their roast chicken and also their fruit flan cake! Been your subscriber for almost a year now. Love watching your naturalness a-it-is vlog rather than all those other done-up vlogs. Here from a tropical country, Indonesia. Ah, you mentioned Malaysia, Indonesia do not use a lot of palm oil as in the past when I was a kid only. Strangely enough, now the West love everything palm or anything coconut including coconut milk which has high cholesterol. A little bit of it it's declicious! PS. I have palm/coconut trees in my garden so it's all just plucked off fromthem for anything coconut which I;d have in the afternoon every once in a while.

Plain and simple...deforestation. Hopefully cooperation to grow will curb deforestation. It can take 4 to 6 years to maturation. One acre can sustain 55 palm fruits but takes careful cultivation. Other countries are not participating as it may be the only money making venture for the individual. And, it is correct to say other types of oils require more space and nutrients. I gave up my favorite hazelnut spread . I am not sure some grocery stores in our country cater to a large population of individuals seeking a vegan alternative. It depends on how wealth is distributed as some go to food pantry just to get a meal for their families and at this time, many food pantries are low in food. As long as food inequality exists, many will buy foods containing palm oil just to eat. Hamburger helper is am example. I enjoy your videos and for those who are financially comfortable your examples are great. Say hello to Roxy.

I don't know if this applies in the UK but in Germany vegan alternatives are considered luxury goods which is why the tax is 19% and not seven. Also I think vegan stuff doesn't sell in high amounts so the price per bar or can or whatever is higher. Plus they probably care more about the working conditions and things like not using pesticides. All that might explain why it's more expensive

I’d be curious to hear you talk about organic vs conventional foods. In North America at least, organic farming often uses more land for lower yield and because it uses natural fertilizers and can’t be as precise, it often uses more of the product and creates more nitrogen runoff that affects water systems. Maybe it’s different in the UK?

I don't buy packaged foods except for frozen fruit and some veggies. I found out yrs ago I have a tin allergy so canned goods and I don't agree. I buy fresh foods and frozen. I go to our local Amish store to buy things in bulk like flour, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions etc. I do buy cabbage, mushrooms. tomatoes, squash, cucumbers etc. and will ferment them to have year round. (Home made sauerkraut is great) I do A LOT of freezer canning as well. So the issue of buying things with palm oil hasn't come up for me. I do use sesame oil when I cook Chinese, Vietnamese etc. , olive oil for most needs and occasionally grapeseed oil in cooking. I don't use store bought noodles since it's so easy to make noodles with flour, salt and water with just a tiny bit of oil. Bread is just adding yeast :) I guess I'm old school cooking especially since going vegan (I was vegetarian for a long time but found my cholesterol was climbing from having too much dairy so went vegan in april this yr.)
