In sweden they take the losse bananas and put them in a basket and children can free take one when familys go shopping
In Iceland aswell :)
What a fantastic idea! It keeps the children occupied, and encourages them to choose healthy snacks as well.
There’s one of those in my local shop with all sorts of loose fruit (in the Uk!)
I actually have to correct myself, I'm sorry guys. There's a place in the grocery stores where children can pick fruit (all kinds actually) to eat when families go shopping but it's not just/it isn't the loose ones it's just all kinds of fruit that are on the edge of going bad and probably no one will buy them. I live in Iceland btw. :)
This is so nice!!!
Would you be able to do one where you bulk make all meals at the start of the week please?? 🙏🙏
Bulk meals could be a great idea for a vid!
@@MadeleineOlivia omg yay ❤
I'm really time poor so usually try to get all my cooking done in one day! Would love this vid
Lauren Draper this!!! Would be so helpful 👌🏼
It's pity that we don't have bulk stores like they do in the United States unless you think zero waste stores that sell foods could be used and supermarkets should introduce more zero waste/plastic free options.
Watching this post lockdown, you have reminded me of the simplier days when you could find pasta in shops and not be worried about pressing them against your face!
I spent £15 for both me and my bf for this weeks groceries, you were definitely the inspo for cutting back on cost as we spent more than double this previously!! (Super excited for the Waitrose version of this)
About the packing in plastic it honestly scares me when I see all food like that. PLEASE SIGN UP THE GREEN PEAS PETITION FOR THAT!
include a link in the comment
I started using Riverford precisely because of the packaging (and the fact that I wanted organic UK only produce), but it is more expensive. I think it’s worth it if you have the money, but if you don’t it really sucks that the supermarkets don’t have loose options.
@@Melissa.Garrett I agree with that because supermarket's would be able to lower the prices which would give local zero waste stores and health food stores some competition which means that the local zero waste stores and health food stores would lower their prices.
Unwrap everything. I burn all the plastic in safe containers
I work with a charity that focuses on redistributing food that would be thrown away by supermarkets. Asda often has bananas and potatoes but the biggest item is bread. They are really focused on making sure their excess food goes to people in need and work with several charities on this problem.
I Greece we make peas with onions, potatoes, carrots, parsley, diced tomatoes or tomato paste and we cover them with water for about 1 hour and it's delicious! You will love it!🧡💛💚
This sounds amazing! 😍
@Louise C. Gibson what sort of herbs
Oeh, does it have a specific name? Sounds delish!
@Louise C. Gibson sounds good will try it soon
You don't have to put any herbs, only parsley and a little bit of sugar. And the same we make the white beans, soak them in water from the night before and add 1 can of tomato, celery, carrots and onions, cover with water until they are tender, perfect soup.
I love these videos! Whenever I watch them tho, I keep being surprised at how cheap fresh fruit and vegetables are in the UK.. also, canned goods. Like how?! And I'm very jealous of the UK selection of vegan options. Get your act together, Dutch supermarkets!
yeah, in france they are very expensive as well, i'm also terribly jealous, but good for them ! we also almost never have kale, and when we do it's way more expensive.
As a French person, I have to say Albert Heijn is already kinda heaven compared to French supermarkets 😂
If you live in the Netherlands, you should take into account that the prices in this video are in British pounds, so the pricedifference isn't actually as big as it seems
We’re very lucky, the only bummer about UK supermarkets is all the plastic packaging. But we are definitely spoilt for choice and price. 👍🏼
DarkLittlePeople honestly same. Some things in the Netherlands are weirdly expensive.
When you can't get Asda's own chickpeas, go to the World Foods section and get the brand KTC; they are much tastier - perhaps a few pence more but sometimes they're on offer and the tin is bigger!
HTC are fab as a brand. We find Asda's own chickpeas to be a bit small and hard generally.
DUDE! Food is soo so cheap over there. Living in California and everything you bought would cost me at least double, even if I went to a discount store. Crazyyy!!!
Yes but the minimum wage in cali is higher than the minimum wage here so it makes sense that products cost more there
And your living in an expensive state. I live in texas so its pretty cheap as heck.
gotta remember the exchange rate, so for the prices in US dollars youve gotta add 20%!
I’m in Texas and I agree! Still cheaper there than here too so I don’t think it’s just California. I wish food was that affordable here!
True 100%
Alex’s editing is bloody hilarious in this. And omg YOU TALKED SO FAST THROUGH THE BIT AT HOME
Rebecca Rahi hahahaha OMG I know Alex even said that when he edited but I’m so aware of how long these videos get!!!
By the end of it I was like BREATHE WOMAN and also, think of your non-native speaking subscribers!!
There actually are tons of wild blackberries in the Pacific Northwest here in the US 😊
And wild blueberries more in the New England states like Maine.
Love these videos!
So true! We live in Maine currently and have all sorts of berries to pick, apples, pears and plums as well
In Louisiana we had wild blueberries and a type of grapes called Muscatine.
wild blueberries !!! 😍🤤
And in the south we have blackberries, blueberries, and mayhaws. So good.
raggedyann I was about to say that! I’m in NC and find blackberries everywhere 😌
I think potatoes and baked beans are definitely a British thing, I don't know anyone in the U.S. who eats it. Thanks to you, I tried it with my husband and now it's one of our regular quick meals! We love it and have shared with so many friends who also now love it.
What kind of baked beans did you use? Also from the US and I'm interested in trying it too.
@@sadiemiller1780 we have used a few kinds of vegetarian ones, mostly the kind from Aldi. I usually keep at least one stocked in the pantry of whatever inexpensive vegan-friendly ones I find at the store so we can make it when the pantry is empty or on lazy days.
Awesome! I mostly shop at Aldi. I'll have to give it a try sometime!
I love your tip about the single lonely bananas. We shopped today in Asda (we were inspired by this video) and picked up some things we wouldn’t usually have. I think we’ll probably stick to Aldi in the future but it was interesting to switch it up. We’re on a really strict budget of £100 a month for a vegan family of two adults and a toddler. My husband and I really enjoy this budget shopping videos and it gives us some new ideas.
If I buy something and it was packaged in plastic, I usually cut them up into small pieces and put them in a plastic bottle. That way, you don't have to throw the plastic into the trash where it might eventually end up in the ocean or something like that. I can't help it if some things are still in plastic packaging but I like to think that I helped prevent contributing to the plastic waste in the oceans. It's also called eco bricks
Samantha Friginal where do you put the plastic bottle filled with cut up plastic?
in nyc 14$ gets you one ripe avocado
I got 24 loose bananas for 69 p from Tesco yesterday 😁 cheap tip...get reduce ripe bananas and freeze then put a few pieces in with your morning oats as you cook them. Works out so much cheaper than using fresh every day. great video 👍
love these budget friendly videos! they really help me figure out what to buy when i need to focus on saving up!!
Loooove these kind of videos not just the idea of finding cheap vegan food but just getting ideas for what to buy(at least as a new vegan that’s what I look for)
I feel like food is SO cheap in the UK! I wouldn’t get half this amount of food for 30 pounds in South Africa!
Johane Berry they have so many cheap chain supermarkets, wtf!
Yeah, UK is very cheap for supermarket foods. Very expensive for takeout or takeaway foods though
It varies quite a bit, depending on the supermarket and whether or not they’re “speciality” foods (organic, gluten-free, meat and dairy replacements, etc.) - but there are certainly a lot of cheap options in the mainstream stores. We are lucky that so many brackets of income are catered for, no question!
Yeah, but try pizza in London. You’ll be broke
But I think this can not be profitable for the companies who make the foods at least for the ones growing vegetables and stuff like that, it‘s just insane 🙈 but it also depends on the supermarket and what kind of concept they have
single use plastics are not great for the environment but from what i’ve learned from disability advocates unfortunately pre-packed items are inexpensive & are often easier for them to cook healthy options. i’m not advocating for single use plastic use at all & am working on cutting down myself but disabled folks have mentioned their use & availability has been helpful so they have more access.
love your channel for inspiration!
About Blackberries: Idk about other states, but I live in Washington State and blackberry bushes grow EVERYWHERE where I live, so I just go to my backyard and I pick as much as I want usually towards the end of August. Right now the berries are all gone and it’s starting to get too cold. 🥰
I visit my Nan every year in Cornwall (I live in Germany) for 2 weeks as my summer holiday and every time we have to go to the Asda in Falmouth cause there is no Asda where she lives!
Watching you going in there just made me so happy xxx
If you cut the bag neatly you could reuse it to freeze things in or something
where I live in the U.S. you can't go anywhere without seeing blackberries. They cover the road and natural areas!
Cora White lucky you!!
omg i'm so happy because i started uni two weeks ago and Asda is the closest supermarket
In Italy we have the option to use bioplastic bags for vegetables and fruits in supermarkets. These kind of bags are made of corn starch, for example, and they are 100% biodegradable.
That's amazing, I'm so jealous
This series is tempting me to move to England just for the cheap groceries 😂
Same!
Same 🥺🙏😅
Lidl and aldi is top class😏
Not usually AT ALL that cheap tbf... that's just amazing planning and meal prep
Also Asda is owned by Walmart I believe
I am eating mainly vegetarian right now and being one person I can live pretty cheap. Love these videos. Shows the variety that you can do with a small amount of money.
Haven't clicked on something so fast in ages! I love your budget videos!! 😍😍😍
I am the same when it comes to being scared easily, the holes weirdness, and loving all the greens! So great to see that you guys can slow down a bit. 😊
Could you do this for M&S? These are available in most cities so would be interesting to see how cheap you can get a weekly shop 😁
Cheap shopping at M&S. Isn't that an oxymoron?!!
@@LibbyRoseEmbroidery I never said it would be cheap I just thought it might interest people. Also waitrose ain't cheap either and Maddy is going to look into shopping there x
I live in northen California in Humboldt county and it rains here pretty much year round and we have blackberry bushes everywhere. We have some in our back yard and the deer come every day to eat the leaves and berries. I grew up picking huge pails of blackberries and my mom would make cobbler. Yummmm!! Im so happy ur back doing these videos. I love seeing how cheap the food is there compared to the US.
Peas, Leak and potato soup is lovely and easy to do. I usually serve it as a cream, with some croutons
shop at Morrisons.... they have so many loose veg and they actually give paper bags instead of plastic to take them home in! :)
These videos are my favourite!! Absolutely love them! Please keep them coming ☺️
Honestly, the hardest part of grocery shopping is the fact I live in a pretty poor area - So, we get bottom of the barrel produce (gross wet greens, rotten fruits, etc.), and the selection of canned/frozen foods is sparse. (On top of that, all the restaurants around here are very meat-based - lots of fast food with no vegan options, unless you get a plain salad). If you're getting into gardening, maybe you could make content on how to grow/maintain your own foods! I feel the way you present information in a simple, accessible way would do well with those sorts of videos.
Anyway, great video! Always love to watch grocery hauls like this!
First time viewer here. I adore you!!! Thanks for sharing! I'm transitioning to more low waste and clean eating. Your videos are very inspirational! :)
Blackberries are HUGE in the US. Black raspberries are everywhere and free. And delicious! :)
Blackberries and blackberry foraging are definitely a thing in the US. At least on the west coast. They are an invasive plant here and are absolutely everywhere.
I take cabbage and cut it in half inch thick half moons. Then add your oil of choice (avocado is my fave), garlic, onion, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bake at 350° F until it gets golden and a little crispy. 😋
We live in Maine currently and have all sorts of berries to pick, apples, pears and plums as wellAnd in Virginia (where we are moving to shortly) they have all those and peaches, cherries, Asian pears, and loads more!
Single bananas have even their own # which is #lonelybananas ☺️ gret to point this out!
Asda’s owned by Walmart high might explain the higher plastic packaging. Thank you much for showing how budget friendly being plant based is👍
Excellent video. I don't like Iceberg lettuce because it is only full of water and no nutrients in it. I will be planning to grow lettuce in my allotment but it will probably be another variety. Sounds like Alex is the gardener in your relationship I would encourage him to continue to do that because it's good for your mental and physical health.
Would love you to try an Iceland shop and see how you get on with it! - lots of frozen veg and fruit (which is cheaper than fresh and can be just as nutritious) and they also do some vegetarian things as well.
I made this easy pea soup last week. Garlic, ginger, spring onions, vegetable stock and green Peas. Cook for a bit and use a stick blender. You could add coconut milk for this and soy sauce when your broth is low sodium. But for the cheap factor you don't need them, it tasted amazing without. Nice with some toasted bread.
Oh! Maybe add some patato instead of coconut milk. That was the one thing I'd do different next time but it tasted good. Patato just bulks it up a but so you stay full longer.
Asda has actually become so accommodating to vegan alternatives ! So great! Also love love morissons and tescos for it
In New England apples, concord grapes, blackberries are in season in july! There's loads to pick on trails and stuff
Quick note on the iceberg lettuce: yes it may be cheaper than other lettuce but iceberg has virtually no nutritional value. I am not trying to judge anyone but sometimes it's a good reminder that we buy food for its nutrition so the cheapest option might not be very cheap at all in that regard.
Agree, I never eat iceberg lettuce there's more nutrition in weeds from my garden.
ANY lettuce has nutritional value???!,
Yeah i think romaine has a fair few nutrients, and doesn't taste that different
@@jofuji8255 Lamb's lettuce is really good! I guess the darker the green, the better?
@@VerenaZyla Exactly! That's why I sub salads for cavolo nero (a very dark leafy green veg, similar to kale but I find the texture nicer) aand frozen spinach (I have part of my greens as smoothies as fresh salad & spinach are expensive AF in Finland)
Hi maddie and Alex great shopping haul. Don’t shop at Asda but will be as have a new cheese out Applewood smoked, melts like a dream I’m told. Noticed the soya milk was organic £1 cheap, I will buy some as I make my own soya yogurt. The new cheese patties look good. Thanks for a great vlog. Hope the new house is going OK. 😘
We have an apple tree in my garden and it produced so many apples this year like we picked 2 massive bowls full and there was still loads on the tree and ones that naturally fell off!
Happy to see one of these again. Always had the preconception that Asda wasn't great for vegan food so found this helpful.
Personally would like to see Waitrose next, I know they do a lot of good vegan food, but I know it's real expensive too, so would be a nice contrast to Asda
Oh my gosh love these videos. Please do Waitrose or Sainsbury’s they’re my two main shops and closest to me. I live in oxford and went to the unboxed store today I managed to get most of my weekly shop for one under 10 pounds!!
love unboxed store today!
s.a.b mohamad yes it’s amazing
I loved this, thank you! I shop similarly now, which made me feel really good because I've been vegan for a little over a year now and remember how these videos seemed so daunting when I started! I need to remember the canned tomatoes idea more though, so this was a good reminder! love from the US
I live in Missouri, a lot of people where I love go apple and strawberry picking. There are a couple of farms where you can pick blueberries and blackberries.
Last year we had so many blackberries in our area ,i crushed them up and put the whole lot through a sieve and froze the juice in small amounts...you have concentrated Vit C then throughout winter ,delicious on so many things including icecream and its free ...
Blackberries are huge in the US, especially the Northwest during summer they're EVERYWHERE. Its crazy. They're pretty frequent in NZ as well.
In the US especially in the south blackberries are in season in mid-summer and right now if you want to buy blackberries at the grocery store then they were probably grown abroad. But to answer your question yes they are definitely a thing here.
This is really helpful for getting ideas on what to buy on my next shop, only thing is I buy so much veg and by day 3 most of it starts to go off
Please do Waitrose!! I’m moving back to England soon and Waitrose is my favourite shop so very excited to see what you can get there!!!
Im so jealous canned goods are so cheap near you! I’m from the US and live in a city now so everything is overpriced. But even when I lived in rural Pennsylvania it was hard to find canned anything for under 80 cents!
See if there is an Aldi near you! The one near me has most canned goods for .59 cents!
Aldi is a good place to go for cheap stuff
Alex sneaking around in the back really made me crack up!
I'm in southern Louisiana in the states and we have tons of wild blackberries (mostly in the rural areas near Lafayette). My uncle uses them to make jam and wine and they're amazing.
Blackberries are very common in the Pacific Northwest in the USA. We have 2 species, the Himalayan Blackberry which is an invasive weed but easily to forage. The second species is the Oregon Blackberry. I don’t know about the rest of the USA.
The price of green in the UK (on Sale) is incredible!
Thank you for the video, it’s really helpful! My question, though, is how do you shop for one person only? I find it frustrating that supermarkets sell plastic packs full of veggies and not lose ones, because (environment aside for a sec) the amount is too much for me only and I can’t just pick the amount I manage to eat.
starting uni so soon so I'm learning so much about budget shopping here! Loving these videos! :D
A lot of supermarkets now sell balls of frozen spinach, these bags last ages and wilt so nicely in pasta!!
i‘m starting uni this week and this is so helpful thank you!
btw i just realized how big your channel is now, i‘ve been subscribed to you since you had like 2k subs crazyy✨💕
We have blackberry bushes. Ours were ready in about mid-summer. We live in NC in the USA.
Here in Italy we have biodegradable/compostable bags for fruit and vegetables. These are bags that destroy and decompose after a few months. Here these bags are also used to throw away food waste for recycling
BimbaElis They exist in the UK, too, depends on the area.
That's a stunning haul. I don't think food is that cheap anywhere near where I live. So cool. Also....everyone uses what they have in their cupboards, it's not a big deal. :)
Please could you video what you make with the food you buy for the week please? Breakfast lunch and dinner!
We have blackberries and apple trees everywhere in Maine and I love it!
Watching these videos actually makes me so excited for starting uni next year and doing my own budgeting and shopping! 😆😂
would love to see you doing a low waste shop in a regular supermarket! i do my shop at asda (the same one as this video ahah) on £14 and relatively low waste, all of my veg is plastic free. its easily done, it just takes planning and sacrifices, and tesco in falmouth do plastic free broccoli! also for people budgeting, asda have a scan and go which is really useful for making sure you stick to your budget
Loved the video! btw you putting those unwashed loose bananas and bell peppers directly onto your face drove me craaaazy haha I think that's where my teenage acne obsession kicks in.
Love these series. In the Netherlands in some shops the lose bananas are for free for kids to eat in the shop. I do most of my shopping at Aldi and Lidl and so much is in plastic so frustrating and often if there is a lose option is more espensive And you can get a fine for picking blackberries here. Not if you take a few I guess. No biscuits?
Yes, southern US has blackberries. It is also going to be pecan season soon!!!!
Love the vid :) Sooo many blackberries growing all around my town in northern California! I've frozen so many for smoothies already- yumm
A tip re chickpeas: look in the world food aisle - they’re usually cheaper!
Crazy how in the UK, major supermarkets have a store brand of mock meats and cheeses. And for so cheap! In the US, they are around $4-9 (£3-7) for vegan cheeses, sausages, and burgers(like impossible burger). I hope that with the rising popularity, the price will drop so it becomes more available to everyone
It's the same in our supermarkets, very poor choice of packaging free food. We're lucky to have a garden though so we started growing our own veggies, it really helps to cut down on grocery bills.
Was rewatching one of these videos yesterday wondering when you’d do another one, so chuffed, I love this series 💚
Great video, I can't wait for part 2 ! :D
I really like that you included loads of greens in this one, because the other one gave me the impression that it was not really possible to shop really cheap and be vegan and get all your greens so I'm relieved ^^
I usually buy local market in Kent . They use less plastics for packaging .
In second year at uni and I always try to stick to £30 for my boyfriend and I, who are both vegan and he is gluten free. We always meal plan as especially with our timetables I need to try and stay organised. I usually end up doing a combination of Aldi and Tesco to get stuff. As Aldi super cheap for canned goods and some loose produce, but they just don't have the range and some specialty items we need.
Omg Alex creeping up on you like that was the best 😂😂😂 I get scared really easily as well, but somehow it's still funny seeing others get scared!
Oh, and Alex's editing is always hilarious :)
You are so right ASDA soya milk has a stronger after taste I find too. I don’t know why?
I’d like to see Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. As I always find when I do a Sainsbury’s shop I seem to get less for my money? Maybe I’m just to tempted by their eat your veg range, expensive but yummy! Also can’t resist heck sausages and sainbugs always have the full range. But yeah Sainsbury’s on a budget will be interesting. I’d also like to see if you can resist all the nice chocolate in Waitrose for your budget hall, ha ha. I’m really excited for some cooking videos. I’ve really missed them! Love your recipes Maddie 😁
I’d love you to go to Sainsbury’s next, it’s our most local store ... really love your videos and find them helpful
Hi Maddie and Alex we enjoyed this video.good to see you two. you guys crack us up. Looking for it to the recipes that you use with the grocery haul.❤
I live in the US and I have red raspberries growing in my backyard. Love your videos!
The food and shopping videos you do honestly like make my soul happy and my stomach satisfied ❤️😊
Did Alex edit this video? I miss Alex's editing. Enjoyed the video Maddie looking forward to the follow up video.
He did indeed!
@@MadeleineOlivia your new editor has been found!!!! Haha hope whomever you pick can live up to Alex.
Love your videos you both do. Very helpful ways of doing shopping on a budget. Oh and it was really cool bumping into you both on Hayle beach the other week. I was on a break with my dog Yogi and seen you both with your dog. Keep up the great work. 😊👍
Blackberries are very big in North America you can find them all over the US and in Canada.
you inspired with these videos to be more thoughtful of food that we eat ect.
ive just started doing my own weekly shop and this is honestly a life saver
Packaged fruit and veg increase the quantities you have to buy. If they were unpackaged one could one or two apples. This way you have to buy that amount.
