    I hate that Alex is my internal monologue here 😅 but yeah, times are hard, and right now the 20p here or there really does make all the difference. I know I can't afford to check if my soy milk is organic, or if the cheaper tinned tomatoes have more water in them than the second cheapest. But having the choice is wonderful, and knowing Lidl has so many organic options is good! Also, fun fact, the Tesco's Wicked Kitchen tofu is £1.85 for a 300g block!

    I enjoyed your budget food shopping video. I'm in the US and even though we have a Lidl not far from where I live, they are not as inexpensive as yours. Also, if I bought the amount of food you just bought, I'd pay over double what you paid. I can't get over that you got spaghetti for .28P and the flour was so cheap! Also, I just bought blueberries and they were "on sale" for $3.99 US. The majority of what you bought shocks me as far as prices go. I don't understand why we pay so much here. Ever since the pandemic, when the prices went up so high, no supermarket here has lowered their prices back to where they used to be. I know we are in some economic crisis here (and of course in Europe too), yet you can still get great prices on your food. Thanks for taking us along on your food shopping. I really liked watching what you bought and seeing the prices.

    This is so interesting! My husband and I are vegetarian, he's dairy & gluten allergic, and I'm soy allergic, so our protein comes primarily from beans and lentils, eggs for my husband, and dairy for me. Here on the west coast of Canada we shop at the cheapest option, lots of off brand (Great Canadian Superstore aka President's Choice), and use their credit card to collect reward points for cash off groceries. We average $660 CDN a month (including $63 a month in delivery fees because we live on a gulf island), so that's just over $80 each per week, but also includes dinners for a senior auntie that I cook for, so let's say $75 each per week. Doing the currency conversion, that's 44 british pounds per week, so we are paying more than double here compared to what you're spending there. Crazy!!

I'm jealous that they had bigger tofu packages, we only get the 200gr packages here. Many things are the same, like very slim selection of mock meats, but in the last year alone they have introduced a lot more products and also vegan cheese for the first time, so there is hope that they'll expand the range even more. I do agree that it's cheaper to cook from scratch most times, especially if you are a bit more experienced and thus sometimes able to swap expensive ingredients for more affordable ones. But those items it still do cost money, especially if you want to have a certain variety on hand to have some taste variety.

Oat milk is ever easier no need to soak, blend 1 cup of oats with 3 cups of water - only for about 30 seconds though otherwise it might get claggy (not had this problem but others have) again add salt and honey to taste. • @bearclaire
      @bearclaire Год назад

      Chickpeas and coconut milk is easy to avoid. You can use other types of beans there are plenty of options.
      As for milk if it comes to like a curry you could just use another type of plant milk, it won't have the coconut taste obviously but it will add some creaminess either way and you'll be adding spices for flavour. You could try a rice milk which is naturally sweet from itself so probably closest to a coconut milk. But There are plenty of other plant milks you could try too such as oat, almond, cashew, rice, pea protein based milk.
      There is also yogurt based on oats or almond.
      And for tofu you can just leave it out of a recipe or if you wish you can replace it with a soy free alternative such as seitan, beans, mushrooms or other soy free meat substitutes. Depending on the recipe and your wishes

    For 2 years I’ve been buying lots of sweet potatoes because I was trying to save money. I was always surprized at my receipt total, but I never checked what made it high. Turns out 2 small sweet potatoes costs 4 euros here in Norway ☠️ 1 chocolate bar also costs 4… 1 bag of groceries typically costs 50 euros for me. Pretty sure it was 30 before

    It's interesting to see how Lidl's range varies from country to country. Here in Sweden we definitely have vegan mince in the freezer section (and a bunch of other "meat" basics like meatballs, burgers etc). Maybe it's a supplier thing cos here they stock a swedish brand of vegan products, not quorn 🤷🏻‍♀️ I miss how cheap food is in the UK though! We'd never get that trolley for that price at Lidl here.

    My top tip for hiding carrots in sauces or soups or stews is to grate them (the big grater holes are fine). I hate hate hate the texture of cooked carrots but if you grate them and sauté for a bit with the onions, they really cook down and almost disappear, leaving no icky textures xD

    For people wondering about getting protein without eating meat, the book Diet for a Small Planet will tell you about the concept of complementary proteins. Basically, you eat plants that have all the amino aids that make up protein useable by humans - if you eat them within about a week of each other, your body will combine them and you'll get what you need protein wise. But what Maddie doesn't tell you is that no plant gives you vitamin B-12, a major source of energy, so you have to take it as a supplement. But the balance of B vitamins, all of them together, is very important, so take a B complex. Before going completely meat free, do some research first so you know how to do it.

      I recently had someone question this and then when I told them I have a good variety of legumes, tofu etc they claimed that the way in which beans are grown and produced harms the insects and can kill them from injesting, so they argued that then by choosing a plant based alternative lifestyle I'm contributing to that, so that left me at a bit of a loss!??! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔

    Aldi did a vegan range in January, and they had amazing salsa pizzas. Then they stopped them, I literally filled my freezer with them. • @bearclaire
      @bearclaire Год назад +1

      That's personally up to you. Everybody's needs are different. You may need a larger or smaller amount of kcal/certain macros than someone else, it's not one size fits all.
      Also not all tofu is equal, like plain tofu is lower in kcal than let's say a smoked tofu which is more dense and has more kcal and silken tofu is genarally lower in kcal. And a pre packaged pre seasoned tofu that has additives like oils and such making it higher in kcal. If I have a quick look at a package sold here in the supermarket it says portion 100 grams.
      But if you feel like that's not enough to satisfy you, eat some more..

    • @sarahowick5456
      @sarahowick5456 Год назад +1

      @@curleq77 Same in Montreal, it's depressing. The price of watermelon is so weird! Also, peaches and nectarines are like $2 EACH which makes no sense since they are in season. It's just pure price gouging and taking advantage of consumers. I don't know how underprivileged people afford to eat.

    Hiya,
    Love your shopping videos, really helpful. I went to Lidl today, and left disappointed. They usually do a cheap, accidentally vegan, chocolate bar which I use in baking. Good thing I checked the ingredients because they have increased the price, by quite a bit, but have also decided to now add milk😢😢😢
