Well it's certainly been a long time since I made a monster hunter video, but never the less it's time for us to head back into the world of monster hunter, and this time we'll be tacking one of the most important aspects of the entire series, the weapons. The weapons in monster hunter are going to be your tools in taking down these larger then life beasts, and in this video I will be discussing which of the sixteen weapons are my five favourite.

God damn, I love that jump ability.

Glad to see my favorite weapon as #1! Although, it's quite stupid how the weapon made for support (Hunting Horn) is the least used weapon online. This is why I have the utmost respect for Hunting Horn users (also Gunlance users because GL is incredibly difficult to use.)

The HH is not made for support man, it is an added bonus that the buffs also effect your teammates. The HH works perfectly fine solo, where you just buff yourself.
Not to say that being on a team with a HH user isn't totally awesome.

I picked up Gunlance at the start of 3U and instantly fell in love with it. It's a shame it's been made even slower in 4th generation though, because that's the one complaint you always hear about Gunlance.

First off, love the video, and found the other two highly entertaining. Great job!
A counter-argument to your SnS comment, however: While, yes, the Sword and Shield is kind of a newbie-friendly weapon, it does have a lot of hidden power. It's a fast weapon, beaten in speed only by the Insect Glaive and Dual Swords. But it has better raw damage than the Dual Swords does, and a defensive option that the Insect Glaive lacks.
It has a top-blend of raw damage and elemental, with both normally being very similar figures. It's manoeuvrable too, making it great for hit-and-run tactics, and it's strong enough for those who like to really beat seven shades of purple out of Monsters (like myself).
Being able to use items while your weapon is drawn is great for quick recoveries, and essential for those running support (Wide Range +2, bro!). Even with your weapon drawn, you are barely slowed down at all.
Plus, the SnS is sharp... Having a higher average sharpness (and being less likely to bounce than most other weapons) makes it a great cutting tool for tails. Add in the fact the shield bash can do KO damage, and you can really round out your damage output.
The only real drawback for the SnS is the lack of major range. Granted, that's been fixed slightly with 4U's jumping mechanic (speaking of, the SnS is the only weapon that attack while going up ledges! Plus, it can attack twice in the air!), it does still suffer slightly.
It's fast, it's versatile, it's surprisingly powerful, and it can block a fair amount. It's max damage output is focused around the combos, however. And making sure you keep those going can be tough, as well as making sure you do the correct combos (mash X until the KO kick, then press X+A together to do the spin slash), then back-hopping, charging, release and repeat, and you'll find yourself ready for some tough Monsters any time.
Source: SnS main on Tri, 3U and 4U, and 2000 hours play time on Tri, 1500 hours playing 3U, and about 200 hours on 4U.

Thanks very much i'm glad you enjoyed the video, but just to clarify while I said it was great for beginners, I still acknowledge it being a very potent weapon for expert players, I just didn't feel that from my experience with the weapon, the SnS was for me once I started getting more familiar with weapons like the dual swords and switch axe, which is why i dropped it.

    • @si421
      @si421 8 лет назад +2

Don't mistake me, this wasn't meant to be an attack on your reasoning at all! I think your point is perfectly valid.
It was kinda meant as a balancing argument, so those new to the series/considering new weapons based on this video and comment thread could see some positives to SnS.
But yeah, as I said. Your reasoning is perfectly valid, so don't fret. (We should hunt sometime!)

As someone who mains both SnS and DB with well over 2000 uses in both, I simply cannot agree with your statement that SnS deals higher raw damage than DB. That is simply not true, and the difference in dps only increases once elemental damage comes into play (although this is often slightly mitigated by SnS having higher elemental values in general). Yes, on their own, SnS attacks have slightly higher motion values than those of DB, but when factoring in the speed at which DB dishes out those small hits, SnS is left behind quickly (you're comparing a top 5 dps weapon to one of the bottom 5... SnS' X -> X -> X -> A -> A -> A -> evade -> repeat cannot hold a candle to Demon Dance or DBs (X+A -> X -> A ->) X -> X -> A -> repeat in Archdemon mode ).
That isn't to say that SnS is a worse weapon than DB, far from it actually. However, SnS' advantage definitely isn't damage. It is mobility (DB users are surprisingly restricted by long attacks such as the Demon Dance, but the movement speed is the same and DBs have a better evade, however, SnS have a much easier time canceling their combos, have a shield for emergencies and have the utility of doing mount attacks up a ledge which is better overall) and the unique utility of using items with your weapon drawn (also, Oils gave SnS an additional edge over DB in MHGen, but even with affinity oil, DB outdamages SnS). DBs advantage is being the straight up more damaging weapon and being a better status abuser (in theory, since MHGen Capcom hasn't been giving us any good sleep or para Dual Blades while letting SnS have some juicy stuff such as Deathprize. Look at optimal MH4U status relics to draw a fair comparison).

What I think about the weapons:
Greatsword: A powerfull and reliable allrounder
    Longsword: Range and speed
Sword and Shield: The utility allrounder, my personal favourite
Dualblades: Fast and ferocious, though very limited
Hammer: A real powerhouse, but not usefull against the really big elder dragons. Limited through blunt damage
Hunting Horn: Somewhat powerfull, but not a solo weapon. Also blunt damage which means no tailcuts
Lance: Defensive and passive but can still be a quite powerfull weapon with a high skill ceiling
Gunlance: Reliable but lacking mobility, also maybe not a weapon for multiplayer. Was ruined in my opinion by the changes made in MHGen since they turned it from a static to a situational weapon
Switchaxe: Good range, highest raw damage(though not that powerfull motion values), playing only axe-mode is not a good idea. Great for cutting tails and breaking parts
Charge Blade: Extremely powerfull but also a very high skill ceiling. Not a weapon for beginners
Insect Glaive: A lot of fun to use, quite powerfull and viable, though it´s expensive to get a good kinsect
Light Bowgun: Fast and versatile, perfect for dealing status damage or breaking parts. Can also be a viable supporting weapon
Heavy Bowgun: Requires a lot of positioning, siege mode exposes you from your cover. High risk, high reward
Bow: Fun to use but not too powerfull. Too reliant to stamina, only to be used with dashjuice and under no circumstances against monsters who inflict water damage

    • @erase4473
      @erase4473 7 лет назад +1

hunting horn is incredibly powerful even by itself you can give yourself great status buffs. also the lance may not be very mobile but it can block almost every attack it's a very good weapon just for that fact and it can even attack behind your shield. and the bow is one of the more/most powerful weapons espically in gen we're you can shoot 2 shots and insta charge it if you Dodge correctly.

    • @darthplagueis13
      @darthplagueis13 7 лет назад

This video was about the weapons and how they behaved in MH4U so adept style is no argument yet. HH is powerfull, but you can still make more use out of it in multyplayer and I´m also just no fan of impact weapons. And I didn´t complain about lance, I just said it´s slow, defensive and difficult to master but not bad at all....

    • @erase4473
      @erase4473 7 лет назад +1

Darthplagueis13 how's it difficult to master? It litterally only has a few attacks ( forward attack, upper strike, charge, and running )so all you do is just stand there block then attack and repeat

    • @darthplagueis13
      @darthplagueis13 7 лет назад +1

I sad to master, not to learn. It takes quite some experience and exercise to time all of your attacks properly, to know what you can block and what not, how do you avoid the attacks you can´t block and how to compensate for the slow movement...

    • @reicherwallace6774
      @reicherwallace6774 7 лет назад

Don't forget about stamina management. It's not like you can block all day. You gotta know when it's safe to let your guard down so you can get your stamina back. Lances are one of my favorite weapons. I am starting to like Shield and sword a lot more too with MHG. Lances are so underrated it feels like.

I prefer longer videos, even for top 5s, because it gives a much better idea of the weapons and why he enjoys they. I hate the hammer and insect glaive, but I can respect his opinion because he actually gives detailed reasons as to why.

      Same.
Honestly, the Long Swords are extremely reliable and versatile. They ask a lot more in the realm of planning and foresight from their users, but if you're smart enough to predict, and quick enough to act, the Long Sword can decimate without ever leaving you open.
I feel they've always been overshadowed by the Greatsword and Dual Blades in terms of popularity, and with some of the newer weapons that's only gotten worse. It's kind of a bummer considering how amazing they are when people take the time to learn the rhythms of Long Sword combat.

Oh, ho, ho, Yeah! I know that feeling of a really powerful new weapon. It was love at first sight when I first used the Charge Blade. Landing an Ultra Burst to a monster's head is just so satisfying. Although Switch Axe is my second favourite weapon in the series, no one can deny that the Charge Blade is a really good contender against it. I hope you give the Charge Blade another chance. You'll really start to appreciate the weapon once you get the combos down. Love your list, btw. :)

I know this video is a little old now, but I just had to say, I completely agree with everything you said about the SA. In my opinion, that weapon is so under-appreciated, almost no-one ever uses. At most, 2 people (counting me) use it in online game rooms. That monster of a weapon has saved me so many times, I almost never use anything else, except maybe CB or IG.

For me my favourites would probably be
    5. Switchaxe. The first weapon I ever picked up, so it will always have a place in my heart.
    4. Hunting Horn. Saved me (and my allies) on so many hunts and its got a super easy to use moveset.
    3. Sword and Shield. amazing mix of high damage, high mobility, and high utility, the Jack of all Trades Weapon.
    2. Heavy Bowgun. Nothing beats siege firing 30 Normal shells into a monster's face. Comes with a shield too.
    1. Gunlance. Amazing high damage support weapon, great at drawing aggro, great at destroying the hardest of parts, and it is pretty great when it comes to mobility if you know what you're doing. Difficult to learn though.

My Personal List would (as of MH Generations) be:
5 Switchaxe (very interesting, loved it in MH3, definitely have to try it in MHGen)
4 Bow (has been a lot of fun in all the games it appeared in, Definitely my favourite ranged weapon)
    3 Insect Glaive (in MH4U)
2 Greatsword (Aerial style = dishing out level 3 Charges all god Damn Day)
1 Longsword (Adept/Bushido style = it's back to the top)

Honestly, when my friend showed me Monster Hunter, I swore up and down I was going to main using Dual Swords. Then when I finally got MH3U, I booted it up and... Well I tried out the Dual Swords for hours and hours. And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get into the swing of it. It didn't feel right...
After a bit more fiddling around, I tried out the Long Sword, and I use it pretty much every hunt now, only switching to a hammer if I feel I should. I love the tactical and precise strikes. The range on it is really good and it has good frames in terms of how soon you're able to dodge. I enjoy the damage boost from maintaining the spirit guage. Also, let's be real, nothing can quite compare to the badassery that is the Fate Slash. You look so fucking sick when you sheath your blade after it and it's even cooler when you use that move to kill a monster (which happens more often than you might think because it deals a lot of damage).
I'm still looking forward to when I start on MH4U and especially Generations with the addition of hunting styles and hunting arts. I hope it amplifies my love for Long Sword even more.

  • @sirmuz
    @sirmuz 8 лет назад

    My list would be:
    5. Long Sword. The second weapon that I picked up. I love fade slashing around monsters.
    4. Dual Blades. Being able to dodge around like that and hitting all those slashes at once is so satisfying, especially the ledge jump.
    3. Lance. I use an evade lance setup and it is so much fun being able to keep up the attack and weave through the monster's attacks. Gravios just do not survive this thing.
    2. Great Sword. The satisfaction of hitting that fully charged attack or combo is amazing. I don't find it anywhere near as slow as many people seem to think it is, you just need to know when to unsheathe your weapon.
    1. Charge Blade. This was the first weapon I picked up and is still the one I use most. It dropped off a bit in mid game until I started to discover all of the more complicated mechanics. I will never fight a diablos without this thing and guard pointing it to death.

If you haven't already embraced it, you would be entranced by the striker switch axe. It has affinity and ability to maintain amped sword through the charge and riot. On top you can maintain vertical swing for high monsters and tails, and the charge attack can be repeated to either exploding or canceling and repeating which makes "the chainsaw" as one usually calls it. Demon riot trance slash when buffed especially will prove to be the most powerful move yet. It completely replaces lack of defense for offense, strike so hard the monster never fights back.

A really good video and all, but you neglected to mention 2 things about the Dual Blades.
    1. Archdemon mode. This mode is practically THE reason i use the DB. It's the best of both normal and demon mode.
    2. The fact that during certain attacks(especially in demon mode) you get stuck in the animation. SO yes, while the attacks are quick you get stuck into most of the big ones.
and as for the Sword and Shield, it's the 2nd best weapon for mounting after the IG. The X+A lunge off of a ledge and when climbing on to a ledge are just GREAT. My Top weapon for sure

    my top 5 weapons
5.) the sword and shield. the SnS is a fast, but weak, weapon that can block and can give a monster almost any effect from sleep to to poison very quickly.
4.)the long sword. the long sword is longest weapon (it's in the name) in the game and does good damage. the long sword can also buff itself a few times if you use a certain attack.
3.) the insect glaive. the insect glaive is another fast weapon with long range like the long sword. the insect glaive can also buff itself from sapping essence from the monsters with the kinsect. you can also use the kinsect as a way to damage the monster from range and even hit them out of the air with ease.
2.) the duel blades. the duel blades are the fastest but weakest weapon in the game with poor range. the duel blades makes up for this with it's speed and great mobility. you can also buff the duel blade by entering demon mode. in demon mode, your attacks are fast and stronger, you also sidestep instead of rolling. when you attack in demon mode, you build up the demon gauge. when the demon gauge is full, you enter archdemon mode. in archdemon mode, your attacks are faster and stronger. you can give a monster any effect in seconds in archdemon mode, from sleep to blast. you can also get two extra damage types, for example, you can have physical, dragon and blast damage on a dual blade at the same time.
1.) the charge blade. the charge blade is my favorite weapon in the game. the charge blade is the swiss army knife of the monster hunter world (not the game). it starts as a sword and shield. in this mode, your attacks can be used to charge your phials. the phials are ether impact or elemental. you can charge your sword or shield to buff it one way or another. you can also transform your sword and shield into a large axe. in this mode, you can use your sword charges as powerful attacks that can break monster parts in seconds. however, if you charge your shield, it buffs your attacks in axe mode and increases your defense when you block in sword and shield mode. if you charge both your sword and shield, you can unleash a powerful attack that does the most damage in the game. this however uses up both of your sword and shield charges and take a few seconds to use so use wisely.
i know i made a lot a grammar mistake, don't hate and you can do a lot more with the weapons then what I wrote, I just wrote the basics.

My favorite weapon is the Bow. Light and ranged. Great for all types of monsters. Just need a LOT of patience though.
    Heavy armor? Piercing
    Too fast? Spread type
Great assist weapon as well, not as intrusive to allies as bowgun (in my opinion, you know pellets).

    1. Hunting Horn
    2. Insect Glaive
    3. Heavy Bowgun
    4. Gunlance
    5. Uh... I guess longsword?
Hunting Horn is by far my favourite monster hunter weapon, the versatility of its attacks and non-reliance on combos for a poking fighting style is well suited to me. I first picked it up because I wanted to play support, but was reluctant to do so due to my obsession with loot (tailstailstailstailstailstails). I got over that obsession by playing through MH3U with just the Hunting Horn.
Insect Glaive was my first weapon, since I started in MH4U. It's a flexible weapon able to attack at a long range using the Kinsect and has good reach in melee to hit more difficult parts. While I tried to go to other weapons because I dislike aerial combat and wanted to keep my feet on the ground, the kinsect providing a true pet based combat style drew me back every time. I don't use it anywhere near as much as I used to, but it's my go to weapon for when I need to grind out loot. Not a single weapon cuts tails better as not a single cutting weapon comes with the same mobility, reach, mounting and KO potential.
Heavy Bowgun? In any shooter I play I love artillery and gattling weapons. The heavy bowgun is a natural draw. Even if the light bowgun would be more fitting for me, the fact that the heavy bowgun folds is enough. The controls change in 4U also makes the weapon behave in a natural manner and it's what taught me how to prepare for hunts, which helped me master using the hunting horn.
I'm bad at Gunlance. I only play these 4 weapons and Gunlance is the one I play the least and the hardest to master. But when it works, it's flashy and satisfying. The weapon still has an identity crisis that makes me question why I'm not just using the standard lance, but every precision explosion silences that niggling feeling at the back of my head.
I had to acquire tails before 4U somehow. The longsword is easy to use, has good reach and doesn't feel like the switchblade, a boring sword with a bad but fun mode. Instead it's a bloodthirsty weapon that yells at you constantly that it yearns to taste wyvern flesh. It has tools to help you stay on the monster and keep attacking, but it's not the type of weapon I like, but again, I had to acquire tails somehow.

  • @johns783

    My MH weapon progression:
low-mid rank: Hammer. Make the strongest raw hammer you can at any time and plow through. Make a single easy to make but viable armor set, starting in the mid ranks.
When i run into things that are hard to stay on with the hammer, or need tail cuts, I grab a lance, and make a lance set prioritizing guard. Great for learning new monster attack patterns or dealing with things the hammer can't easily exploit.
Upon reaching G rank make evasion/earplug/sharpness/guard armours and have a good starting selection of one bash happy hammer (usually the Onslaught first, then w/e is the true beast of Raw) and elemental lances. From there, make a workable gunner set.
I make the best heavy bowgun available, followed by situational elemental or status lbgs. Create more gunner gear appropriate for various enemies.
At that point I've generally got all I want, and work on expanding armour sets for more situational purposes, general improvements of what I have, and for kicks dual blades and bows.
Then, keep making shit till your box fills. ;)
    top 5:
    Hbg
    Lbg
    Hammer
    Lance
Duals/bows (I really only main the first 4, though)

If I had t make a top 5 of my weapons it would be something like:
    5-Hammer
I loved this weapon in 3U, although with the introduction of the Charge Blade in 4U it has lost a lot of what made it king back in 3rd generation. Still incredibly fun to use though.
    4-Bow
Gunner weapons never get much attention, but bow is a weapon I love. Just the fact it can make some monsters like the Brachydios or the Shagaru Magala complete jokes because of its mobility and speed makes it a great choice for when I don't wanna get hurt too much during a hunt.
    3-Sword and Shield
I think people don't give SnS enough credit. While everyone is busy drooling over Dual Blades, I've always been the guy who prefers a shield over a second blade. Alright, I admit the shield on the SnS is pretty useless, but the ability to use items with your weapon drawn is still a huge bonus that derives from it.
    2-Switchaxe
I'm a huge fan of the Switchaxe as well. It has the right combination of speed and power and when using an evasion set you can pretty much evade everything at anytime. The Ceadeus Switchaxe line holds a special place in my heart because of how much I had to farm to get that weapon in both 3U and 4U, and because the thing is just damn powerful.
    1-Gunlance
It's slow. Do I care? No, because it's just incredibly powerful. Just the concept of a Gun-Lance is badass enough, but it also happens that I love using it as well. Nothing beats whipping out my Artillery God set and going to town on dem Apex Rajangs and Deviljhos ignoring their precious armor.

Oh I enjoy the Gunlance and I do feel I should give it another go, but it's because I'm so familiar with the Lance that playing Gunlance throws me off. I keep expecting to do one thing because I'm so trained on the Lance, but the weapon does something completely different.

    • @TNB12
      @TNB12 8 лет назад +1

I can play both fine, it's just that it requires a lot of time to get used to whichever one you tried later. I picked Gunlance first and then learned Lance, but the best tip I can give you is try to incorporate shelling instead of a third stab. Instead of stabbing three times just go X->X->A. Makes the weapon a lot more bearable instead of having to sit through the overhead slam animation. And of course you can start another XXA combo from there without having to backhop which is nice. Just make sure to reload those shells.

My six favorites have to be:
6.) Bow- I like how it's both very versatile and pretty easy to use
5.) Longsword- I prefer this over the great sword due to it having better mobility and I really like how fluid it is when it comes to combos
4.) Hunting Horn- it has good mobility and having it give buffs to the whole team makes it great for multiplayer
3.) Insect Glaive- i love how flashy the combos are and even though I hate the process of upgrading the thing, Kinsect is a fun thing to mess around with
2.) Switch Axe- you basically took the words right out of my mouth with your entry.
1.) Light Bowgun- it's the weapon that I started with when playing Tri and has been my favorite weapon since. It gives great mobility, good evasion, and though it doesn't do as much damage as the HBG, it makes up for it by being more elemental and having rapid fire to conserve bullets.

    My top 5 weapons? Hm...
    1. Light Bowgun - My currently main weapon I have used most. You can keep safe distance in enemy that gives you time to react their attacks.
    2. Longsword - Can't go wrong with it - Unless you fight Mohran. It was my main weapon in MH3U.
    3. Bow - While at first I didn't really enjoy Bows in earlier games, but in Worlds it has been improved A LOT.
    4. Insect Glaive - While I liked it in MH4U, in later games I didn't use it that much, even if now in MHW using Kinsesect to leave Blast Powder in air is fun.
    5. ...Hard one. Charge Blade is my choice though, as it can change from Shield & Sword into a Big-ass axe.
    Weapon I dislike?
    ...Hammer and Hunting Horn.

In monster hunter gen, the first monster hunter game I had and currently have, I use dual blades, due to the new hunter styles everyone weapon has a perfect balance depending on the style and weapon used together. The dual blades with areal style practically makes damaging flying monsters easy, and mounting easy, that's one reason I like dual blades, the other is that I always liked the idea of using 2 knives as a weapon in an rug and monster hunter gen was the first I got that ability

If you think great sword is slow then you're not using it properly. You draw then roll and sheathe, then you keep on doing that. I fought nargacuga with great sword ( by myself ) in the MHX demo and I defeated it easily. Switch axe may rival the great sword in terms of base power and versatility but great sword if used correctly can attack faster than the switch axe.

    1. lance, this weapon is my one as the skill needed for this weapon suites my style (and im not saying all weapons are easy compared to the lance but this is just my personal opinion)

My favorite Weapons of Monster Hunter are Great Sword, Long Sword, Dual Blades, Hammer, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, and Insect Glaive.

I can use most every weapon effectively if not proficiently. My top 3 weapons, in no particular order, are Switch Ax, Charge Blade, and Insect Glaive. I love all 3 because they're so multifaceted and can use all 3 in most any fight. My number 4 would be Bow, mainly because everyone thinks that ranged gets you killed faster and I go around dealing a lot of damage while not getting hit. It's just annoying that ranged weapons need their own armor sets and skills. My number 5 would probably be the Hunting Horn. The Horn has some of the most solid dps, with everything being an infinite combo, and can KO almost as well as the Hammer, not to mention that the songs it plays help the entire team, effectively giving you a 5th player in damage dealt. It's an aggressive support weapon.

I always had that, "but ranged weapons are so much weaker and the armor sucks!" mentality until I finally decided to start a fresh 4U save file, and decided to play through caravan with HBG as a main... I can kill most monsters faster with HBG/LBG than I can with any other weapon, even gunlance, a weapon that I consider myself to be a pro with. Most people tend to forget that while ranged armor does have significantly less defense, it has much MUCH better elemental defense. People don't really give the bowguns much of a chance, which is a crying shame because they are FANTASTIC weapons!

I came here to complain that the switch axe wasn't on another top weapon list, because well... I never stopped using it since I first unlocked it in Tri. I'm glad this video disappointed on that front. One like and one subscribe.

As an adamant tryhard in just about everything I do, not just monster hunter. (1,000, 3,000, 6,000, and 1,000 hours in unite, Tri, tri Ultimate, and 4 Ultimate respectively) I'd like to say I appreciate this video and wish people in general, and monster hunter videos in general and wish people would have the "I'll find a way to do it" attitude in general. I very much dislike the approach monster hunter is taking by having a "user friendly lower skill ceiling game" essentially diminishing the appeal to me and becoming a sellout game while also introducing increasingly less challenging monsters and dramatically more powerful equipment. Well I will say that 4 ultimate did a very good job with the Expedition Crown tier difficulty monsters, you have to get through the entire game to get their, and cannot face certain monsters on that difficult, and personally hoped that would its own rank for people who actually wish to acheive. Because lets face it, once you figure out monster hunter the game becomes extremely easy. I made it to Guild G-rank, Solo, with the story completely beat, in 100 hours.
    Also favorite weapons would be:
#5: Hammer (Freedom Unite, due to how useful having the KO potential can be against some of those fucking things)
#4: Hunting Horn (Tri Ultimate Because of the incredible changes made to it making it much more fun as well as practical)
#3 Heavy Bowgun (Tri because of custom Stock/Barrel/Frames)
#2 Bows (Tri Ultimate because of the HUGE upgrades it recieved while still remaining an insanely balanced weapon)
#1 Greatsword (Tri Ultimate Due to its skill ceiling, and how rewarding the weapon can feel, But to my insane disappointment became pretty overpowered in 4 ultimate)

Switch-axes can only do more damage with power phials.

the storms collide No, they're not. Power phial and just sword mode in general does more damage and is the better part of the SA.
Unless axe mode motion values are higher anyways.
