Driving the terrifying 1968 Spa circuit with a McLaren legend

- Half a century ago we took our first-ever victory at Spa Francorchamps, but the circuit in 1968 was very different to today’s: a nine-mile triangle on public roads complete with 170mph blind apex corners. Alastair Caldwell, Bruce McLaren’s race engineer, and Jackie Oliver, fifth place finisher in that race and later McLaren team driver, discover the old circuit and relive the events of that historic day
The 720s has grown on me faster than hair.
Same.. didn't care for it when they launched it but now it's one of my favorite road cars.
McDonald's guy:so sir... what's your order
Me:A McLaren
this is dangerously close to a mcskillet (the youtuber) joke
@@BladezAndrew rip
Dat dude fucked himself up and fucking killed two people rip yes but dont be like him
That will be $6.78
@@steveguzman6141 rip to the McLaren... that's what I was thinking not that guy xD he fekin killed 2 for what? For feeling down? What an a hole...
And in 2018, McLaren finished dead last. 😡
These drivers had balls of steel
Amazing to hear how rudimentary and simple F1 was back then. :)
Bruce just bought stuff in America and had them fitted on the car. I mean wow! Thats so cool!
Imagine if he was still hear
Here*
Imagine the 24hr GT3 race on that circuit. Hot damn
I will always respect ol' Bruce for the Legendary Kiwi he was. Good on ya, mate
And you really have a GT3 version of the 720s?
I am an Indian and my dad had the chance to meet Alistair cadwell at the 2016 Bhutan vintage car rally. He and Mr Cadwell went on ride , Mr Cadwell was driving with my father in the co driver's seat and he was going through the mountains at 200 to 250 kph. He used to be a great friend of my dad. I still feel lucky that my dad drove and talked like freinds with mr Cadwell 😀
We need to get our act together and start getting podiums and challenging for titles again in current f1.
Sinister Hahahahahahahaaha it's gonna take them about a decade to get back at winning championships
@@jasdil8806 No, actually just 6 months to fight for podiums and 18 months for a championship.
@@mralf1_104 you're delusional. It's been the same from McLaren for 5 years and nothing will change for another 5 minimum
@@jordanlewis1163 How so?? This year was a transition season, which was messed up from the start because they couldn't get the actual 2018 car ready until Spain and so it made it look like the expectations given were way too high when they would've been achievable if Boullier had actually been working on the car instead of on the media. Since Spain onwards, there has only been 1 upgrade, which was to the engine. Because of the bad management around the team, Boullier was kicked out at Paul Ricard and a new direction was set, forgetting about this season completely and putting all the time and resources on 2019. And they are still better than half the field (including Renault, Sauber and Honda) and depending on the track, better than Force India. And like I said, next year will be better, so... When you focus on McLaren, don't just look at Vandoorne, because he isn't good enough for this team and maybe for the sport
The ALONSISTA Force India and Renault are both much superior to the current McLaren. They are currently the seventh best team. Not gonna be getting podiums for a long time.
I prefer this over those crap bugattis
Could shown us the whole lap! :\
There's a guy on youtube , who uploaded a whole lap of nurburgring in the 720s
@@ishkaranbrar313 he meant a lap of the old spa circuit. What's the point of even mentioning nordscheleife.
@@abhiverma9294 I thought he asked for the entire lap in the 720s
Entire lap in the McLaren 720s in Old Spa smh
Great video. The old GP circuits amaze me and the scenery is stunning.
Thanks McLaren
Acceleration is my drug of choice.. 🚦🏎🏁👍
Bruce & Denny, two great kiwi drivers
I hate this car company of what you did to Vandoorne...im out
Mclaren is so amazing. Imagine if Bruce was still here.
That eau rouge
Street supercar McLaren is glorious, but F1 car like shit hole...
nice rolex daytona
Solo tengo la oportunidad de probar el 720s en Forza Horizon 4
"The 1970 (not 1968) Belgian GP race was the last to take place on the original Spa-Francorchamps circuit, an epic nine-mile triangle of public roads." It was won by Pedro Rodriguez in his Yardley BRM P-153 over Chris Amon in his March 701. I do not understand how there is so much effort put into making these videos and yet basic facts are mistaken. I saw Peter Gethin win the 1970 Road America Can Am in his Gulf McLaren M8D as a little kid. ruclips.net/video/BeglAyTxXXQ/видео.html
The 1968 race was indeed the last time the track was used in it's original, unmodified layout.
In 1969 it was boycotted by the drivers and in 1970 the track was modified with a chicane at Malmedy prior to the race.
That's basic facts for you buddy! :)
1000th like, 3 years later 😎
That's my kind of Spa
Again ! STOP MAKING VIDEOS AND GET MY NEW720S DONE!!!
