I'm always curious - if 750 won the 1/4 with 10.5s is it possible that 720 had better time one or two rides before? Maybe it would be a good idea to always show the best time for each car? Regardless of which ride it was? 😎
Because they race in a runway not a drag strip. I’ve seen a 720s run 9.7-9.8 on perfect weather with Toyo 888r in a fully prep surface. On the same track, perfect weather and same tires, the 765 LT could run 9.3-9.4. The point here is they raced the cars side by side… the day might not been perfect (The runway is definitely not perfect but it’s the same for everyone). So the times are what they are.
would be nice when you do 3 or more drag races, that youd just take the best time from each vehicle and use those stats instead of the last most recent race. just a tip! always great vids!

Never thought tyres can make that much difference, I considerd pirelli as great tyres but those cup 2's are at whole another level no wonder why michelin is no. 1
I dont think its the tyres mate. We can clearly see the 720s has less power off the line but reels in the 750 at higher speeds. The answer is GEARING. Shorter ratios on the 750 give more oooomph at low speeds and the longer ratios on the 720 give it more top speed.
Tyres always make a difference when it comes to performance cars. Owners will nearly always swap out pirellis. They've been proven time and time again to be much slower than others
Still like the styling of the 720 and 765 better than the more tame 750, but interesting to see the improvements off the line. Both cars could and should run about 0.5 faster in quarter under optimum conditions but this is equal footing to show the gap. Thanks CarWow! Love me some McLaren content!

the 750s probably has the OPF filter, so no wonder it got slower at the top end, all cars that got OPF became slower than their non-opf variants, for example OPF M5/M8 became a lot slower at the top end, the older models are gapping them in a roll race.
@@jaysosaaa7975 because it's the truth, in Dragtimes channel they raced 720S vs 918 Spyder 5 times and they were superclose (both around 9,90s/10,00s in the 1/4 mile). Meanwhile, SF90 is way faster, it always runs the 1/4 mile around 9,40s/9,50s. It will destroy both of them, it's even faster than 765LT.
So I believe that the shorter final drive in the 750S is beneficial from a standstill, however it's forced to shift way sooner thus making it easier to fall out of the best part of the power band.
@@Smzxe While it is true that McLaren underrates their cars, your numbers are too high. That 769 W_hp number was not done by the SAE standard, it was STD and it was not even done at a load based dyno. So you are looking at maybe 730 W_hp in the real world. Secondly the modern DCT transmission drive lines does not take 15%, more like 13%. So you are looking at about 830-840 C_hp not 880. This math you can do with the other numbers as well.
McLaren are known to break down . That's what made porsche what it is today. Their ability to be so reliable even when being pushed relentlessly on a track. Where as mclarens literally always have issues.
@@G82Watts thats not true at all. Mclarens are known to be reliable. They are one of if not the most reliable supercar. Where did you get your info from? youtube? Every talk to real owners? Mechanics? Hundreds of owners in the forums? Maybe do your research before trying to spread a lie.
Agreed. I suspect the 720S actually has more power. There are already dyno test videos on youtube showing the 720S has close to 790hp. They're easy to find. The 750S might actually make close to its actual rated power. Many Mclarens made signicantly more than claimed, but the 600LT actually made 600hp. The Senna made about 840hp, not the 789bhp they stated.
Add a advanced car diagnostic tool and I think we will see that the slip rate between front and rear axle is different between the cars, due too tyre difference. Would be interesting...
Less traction will hurt you off the line, and shorter gearing will improve your mid range acceleration but hurt the top end. I don't know a huge amount about the 750 tbh, but if they've worked in a bit more downforce that'll also hurt at higher speeds
We know from multiple dyno tests the 720S actually has around 790hp at the crank/flywheel. Maybe the 750S actually has closer to its advertised figure. That's my takeaway. The 720S was always faster than the Ferrari Pista because the while both had the same claimed power, the Pista actually made 710bhp. The final drive is the only shorter ratio, same as the 765LT.
Shorter gearing creates a final drive ratio that isn’t optimized for top speed, more so for acceleration. Longer gears let the engine crank out through the powerband more, giving you more top end shove. At least that’s how I believe it works. Something also tells me something may have been awry with the 750S. I’ve seen other videos with it and it’s been quicker. Not a crazy difference because they’ve both got hypercar-like power delivery but it’s definitely noticeable
Traction. It's why a rwd will smoke the same awd car on a prepped surface. Take the 992 for example. 4S vs S on a prepped surface and the rwd S runs away with it. But put them on regular street asphalt and the 4S takes it.
A 720s coupe is 1419kg kerb weight and a 750s spider is 1438kg kerb weight. Power difference plus tyre difference = similar results, get a 750s coupe v 720s coupe on same tyres and the race will be more realistic.
Wow, so much heat soak. Fun fact most of the mechanical issues all McLarens suffer from is the fact that the intercoolers are piped into the radiator and the turbos use the engine oil. It really shows here in this video
So it's clear that McLaren no longer makes an important upgrade to their cars today. All are the same. The 720s rides like the 750s... actually faster! The P1 with 1000hp rides the same as the 765LT (see the vs on DragTimes) The Senna rides the same as the others.. in short, no difference in performance, it doesn't matter if it has 1000hp vs 750hp, much the same. what a shame for the McLaren brand! Unfortunately, the facts speak for themselves.
Really shows how lazy Mclaren was with this iteration. Virtually no difference between these machines. Add 30 hp, tweak the gearing, body paint the front end instead of 2 tone. Change the exhaust. Update infotainment. Thats it.
I’ve heard from McLaren mechanics that if you just weekend drive them they break on you since the engine components aren’t warmed up But when you daily drive them and keep everything warm they are a lot more Reliable
Not far off. What's funny is that people are already dynoing them, and some have found them to be a bit down from the 720S, But the 720S was massively underrated.
@@jozefjozefczyk3936 More like 780. That test Brooks from Dragtjmes did, needs to be taken with a grain of salt. These transmissions have a loss closer to 13% not 15%. Also, they used an STD correction not SAE. So doing the numbers based off of a inertia style Dynojet using STD, you can deduct about 10% to get it to the equivalent of a load based SAE number. So 780-785 is probably correct.

It’s common knowledge those 720’s are actually more like 750-760 bhp
~790hp
Yeah even my nan knows that
Yeah even the nan of shanginadildo knows that
So what is the real power figures for the 750s ? 800 820 ?
So the 750s has about almost 800.

Seems like the 750s has better acceleration with the new shorter gear ratio but the 720s has better top end with the longer gear ratio

Matt, include the 765LT, too. This video was amazing!
I'm always curious - if 750 won the 1/4 with 10.5s is it possible that 720 had better time one or two rides before? Maybe it would be a good idea to always show the best time for each car? Regardless of which ride it was? 😎
It's 750 marketing, and it was supposed to win, although the 720was literally faster.
That's why they can't show the fastest times also for both cars.
I’ve been saying this, why don’t they take the best times possible?

All this vid shows is that the two cars are equal, great vid and not what I expected.
These are the kind of drag races that got me hooked on Car WOW ❤️ bring back more practical drag races🎉
Longer gearing helps the 720S at higher speeds. Not sure why this was surprising to Mat? He literally mentioned the longer gearing...
I like the placement of the rear badge better on the 720s. That space is taken up by the exhaust in the 750s unfortunately.

So I believe that the shorter final drive in the 750S is beneficial from a standstill, however it's forced to shift way sooner thus making it easier to fall out of the best part of the power band.

While it is true that McLaren underrates their cars, your numbers are too high.
Matts face 8:50 realising he's got slower car 😂
Thats absolutely bibilical.😂
And you Know, Matt always tries to pick the car he Thinks will give him the win..
I still find it unbelievable that the first question to an owner of a 200k “super car” is, has it broken down yet, and be surprised if not.
Well its very reliable surprisingly like TommyKaira R33.
Just because it's a supercar doesn't mean it's that reliable.
You must be new to the world of McLaren
McLaren are known to break down . That's what made porsche what it is today. Their ability to be so reliable even when being pushed relentlessly on a track. Where as mclarens literally always have issues.
@@G82Watts thats not true at all. Mclarens are known to be reliable. They are one of if not the most reliable supercar. Where did you get your info from? youtube? Every talk to real owners? Mechanics? Hundreds of owners in the forums? Maybe do your research before trying to spread a lie.
We should have a Dyno test
10:48 the 750s has push/pull paddle shifters, does 720s have as well?
765lt has them as well!
I’m no engineer, but how can essentially the same car but with a bit less weight, a bit more power and shorter gearing be slower?
Different tyres; one car properly run in; different drivers; vagaries of the track surface.
You compared 720s coupe with 750s spider, so no surprise coupe performed better
750s spider is still like 40kg lighter though.

This channel has great content 👍🏽😎✅
whenever Mat says this is the decider, the other driver forgets to launch, automatically helping Mat win
Really shows how lazy Mclaren was with this iteration. Virtually no difference between these machines. Add 30 hp, tweak the gearing, body paint the front end instead of 2 tone. Change the exhaust. Update infotainment. Thats it.
I’ve heard from McLaren mechanics that if you just weekend drive them they break on you since the engine components aren’t warmed up
But when you daily drive them and keep everything warm they are a lot more Reliable
Them launching at the same time makes me so happy
the extra hp doesnt overcome the extra down force in a straight line apparently, not that 4% extra hp is a huge change
I bet if you put cup 2s on the 750s it would’ve been the kicker, but I’m not sure if that’s an option on the 750s
I think the 720 had more power then advertised and all they did was put a different exhaust on it for the 750.
Not far off. What's funny is that people are already dynoing them, and some have found them to be a bit down from the 720S, But the 720S was massively underrated.

@@jozefjozefczyk3936
More like 780.
