How’s this for a crazy drag race line-up?!
We’ve got Mat in the Tesla Model S Plaid, and he’s about to face off against the world’s fastest film drone! It’s been built by Red Bull so they can keep up with F1 cars, and we’re about to see just how powerful it is against a production car!
So let’s check out the stats, starting with the Tesla. It’s powered by 3 electric motors, and these combine to produce 1,020hp and 1,420Nm of torque! This power is sent to all four wheels, and it’s also pretty heavy, tipping the scales at 2,200kg.
And then we come to the drone. Whereas the Tesla comes in at 2,200kg, the drone weighs just 985 grams! It may only have 8hp, but when it’s that light, there’s no doubt this drone will absolutely fly down the straight!
But of course, we know the Tesla will absolutely shoot off the line, while the drone has to fly upwards before it can head forward. Will that be its downfall? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

It looked like he passed him multiple times the first few runs so I knew he was holding back
You can also tell by the sound, its electric with immediate torque and doesn't have to fight for traction. The pitch of the scream it makes should be consistent when at full throttle. Hear the difference between 3:43 and 6:26
Matt mentioned that it has over 5000hp per tonne and then immediately forgot when the drag races started. It was over before it even started. Secondly top fuel dragststers with similar(very loosely used) much HP per tonne can do mid 4s and if you minus the 2 seconds it takes to lift off and tilt you're about 1/2 a second off

@@randombanter7553 Yeah I get he wants to make "a nice video", but this was quite ridiculous. The drone was very obviously holding back and just at the very end jumping to the win. Even with acting and pretending "it's close, who's gonna be...." ... it was just too obvious to not be cringe.

Well, seeing how the dragster will hit the drone's top speed within 2 1/2 seconds and 1 1/2 seconds later hits 480 km/h (300 mph), the dragster will do to the drone what the drone did to the Tesla.

I mean that RedBull drone is meant to go around a track and keep up with a F1 car thats an endurance of about a minute, a drone with an endurance of 7 seconds means it can put out much much more power to weight ratio and so highly possible to beat the Top fuel.

Why is it impressive when the car had zero traction due to driving on wet surfaces ? My car does 0-142mph in under 10seconds, and on a wet surface It would take over 20

Ok thank god, as a pro drone racer myself I knew from the sound that he wasn't giving it everything, was worried he was instructed to keep it close for whatever reason. Glad he got to show off the actual speed
I knew something wasn’t right those first few races also. I have a drone that goes 160mph and the Redbull one is way faster, so I knew he was messing with him.
I was thinking the same thing there was no way, he was just toying with him 😮💨

also the tesla is going in a straight line where as the drone is all over the place, if the drone could go in straight line it'd have an even faster ¼ mile time

I saw the RedBull video yesterday. What a machine the drone is. Hopefully with tech later on we can use those drones in F1 as cameras for tv direction. You can see the real speed of F1 cars in the straights and most importantly in the corners which is really hard for most cameras to capture!
Yeah with current battery tech they would require 50+ drone but it would be really cool

Not going to happen, imagine crashing one down on the circuit, or worse, on a F1 pilot at 300kmh. I would be very surprised if they approved it. Not that I don't support your enthusiasm though.
@@MightyCalves also true. when they tested the prototype of this vs the f1 car on RB official channel something in fact did go wrong. it seemed to lose steering and veer off course and they pressed a 'return home' fail safe and it returned home. but you know, once something like this would be deployed in a race ittl be tested and 'fail safed' to the max... It wouldnt be a 100% safety but close enough to make it viable. I mean basically theres absolute deathmachines above the circuits in the form of choppers as well (if anything would happen)
They already have fpv pilots filming at F1 races, not using a top speed drone like this, tho. And they have been filming other styles of races for years, especially drift and rallycross

with drones, braking in a straight line is very difficult to interpret, because the way we accelerate isnt just throttle, we pitch forward as well, thats an equal part
so to completely stop, we usually circle, but we can also point backwards without turning, but it means we can't see the ground. a really confident pilot could stop it much quicker, easily within half the car's distance.
but in general, the drag is the only thing slowing us down in a corner, so we intentionally overshoot so we can turn around more to accelerate the other direction.

You could tell he was getting beside him and then taking off at the end of the race. Glad they showed the actual speed at the end.

I wouldn't say "drones" in general. This is very much an exception with these guys being actual gods at handling drones at this speed. They made the initial design (almost from scratch) then got some redbull R&D involved in there to use exotic composites and what not. If anything it shows you what the speed drone market will look like in 5 ish years
This is the BEST car channel on RUclips. It's like my dreams from the mid 90's when I was a teenager playing Gran Turismo 4 and 5. Just... so many wild match ups.
I used to get my little brother to be like "HEY! HEY! Let's race a slightly modded Cobra R vs a bone stock Viper and see how they do.

I'm curious, do the propeller tips go supersonic at that drone's max velocity?
I would assume not, just because it's really bad for performance when blade tips get into that new regime of flow. You start getting a bow shock in front of the blade and that restricts flow, the further supersonic the further that shock wave is in front on the travel direction of the blade. The tips transitioning into transonic and supersonic may also just break the blades from the instability and transition only at the tip.
Jet turbo fan tips are just riding the line before getting transonic, jets that get into multiple mach numbers have to use afterburner and ram jets.

And then my expectations were met with the 4th run.
A nice Mind blower for anyone who doesn't know how fast drones can get.
Literally looks like a Dragon Ball Character in real life.
And drones don't have so much of a limit as cars do.
Since they are not heavy and do not require friction with the surface alongside gravity to keep them grounded.
These factors mean the drone gets to max speed real quick without limitations holding it back.
Well except controllability with and wind and air pressure

LOL i knew the drone pilot was toying with Matt, you could tell from the sound of the motors it kept backing off any then only accelerated at the last moment, well apart from the last race where he smashed the car. very entertaining though, what a drone!
