THIS IS A DRAG RACE FOR THE AGES!
We’ve got the legendary Bugatti EB110, and it’s about to go head-to-head against the classic Ferrari F40!
So let’s see how these two legends compare. Starting with the Bugatti, it was originally released in 1994, and it’s powered by a 3.5-litre quad-turbo V12 that can produce 560hp and 610Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,690kg. When it was first released it cost £285,000, but if you’re looking to pick one up now you can expect to spend a cool £1,500,000!
The we have the Ferrari F40. It was first released in 1991, and it’s powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V8 that can put down 480hp and 580Nm. All of this power is sent to the rear wheels only via a 5-speed manual, but it’s oh-so light, weighing in at just 1,350kg! It was originally cheaper than the Bugatti, at £163,000, but if you’re looking to buy one today it’ll set you back at least £2,000,000!
So the Ferrari is down on power, and it’s only rear-wheel drive, so could the weight difference prove decisive? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I wanted an EB110 or F40 so bad a few years ago, but I opted for a 1997 Civic bc of its bigger boot space

My friend had an F40 in the late 90s. He wasn't even as rich as you might think but he was single and worked at Microsoft and wasn't super responsible with money. I've yet to find a video that truly captures how great those turbos sound from inside the car. It really was something else and the acceleration was violent.
Shifting the F40 at 5500 RPM isn't a drag race, that's a leisure drive.

At least just say it as it is "Listen, we're going to make the race close because of X.", or "Listen, we won't be driving the Ferrari F40 hard, because the owner does not want us to", or "The F40 would smoke the Viper, so we are going to make it close by not pushing the F40 beyond 5500 RPM", something like that.
You need to consider that you overdrive the car and something happens, you will lose your house, lol.

They make it seem as the cars go neck and neck all the way to the 1/2 mile mark, which is deceiving and in my eyes straight-up misinformation and dishonesty.

The coolest thing is that both cars come from the work of the passionate eng. Mr. Nicola Materazzi. He was the father of the F40 and after that worked on the Bugatt EB110 as well. What cars!
Matt has skills for sure! Launching a Viper that has no traction control is really sketchy business. Just like braking that hard without ABS to rescue you. Impressive!

There s NOTHING "insane" about it. The other guy is NOT racing AT ALL. He starts the car as if going for groceries and shifts at 5500 rpms! This video is simply INSULTING to this channel's audience. Respect to the Petersen Museum for even considering this, let alone allowing it to happen. The EB110's injury highlighted how delicate these iconic beauties are. Like asking grandfathers to run the 100 meters.

I was lucky enough to get to see both of these vehicles last year in the @PetersenMuseum vault. They're both just stunning to see in person.

Nah I'm sorry, Matt was giving it some but our friend in the F40 🥱 either babying it way too much or purposely driving slower to make it look close, guy was short shifting at around 6000rpm when, redline is 7750 with max power at 7000, I get it, it's an expensive car but if your not gona run it properly leave it sat in storage and run something else.
Have a lot of fun watching carwow drag races but not this one unfortunately

I believe the F40 had a lot more to give, but I think it was misfiring and the driver short shifted when it started to misfire. You can see what I mean twice in the roll race.
Nevertheless, it was really cool to see these cars racing 👌🏼
Yeah sadly these old girls are at risk of misbehaving a bit, and are not cheap to fix. They deserve to be looked after and treated gently. Shame, but back in the day you could have ringed the neck of an F40 with no worries. I would still have the F40 anyway.

God told me that Viper was (and currently is) modified. He says the showroom stock will do 14 sec quarter mile.
Times make sense with modern rubber.
There's something special about the F40. When it's turbos are on the boost it's so fast. Unbelievable what Ferrari made so many years ago❤
It was pretty evenly matched with the Viper but the latter came to 1/3rd of the price so how was it any more "special"? If anything, they did a very poor job if it can't even beat a Dodge, not that the Viper is a slouch or anything.

You can’t judge anything at all from this video about the F40’s performance. Luckily there are other video’s where they do drive it hard.

The Viper is a sledgehammer, achieving the same greatness with sheer brute force
it's strange how, both heavier and less torque. the power-curve must be sublime
It's naturally aspirated as well, so cute down on the turbo lag for better acceleration at points

Been waiting for the EB110 to make an appearance. Peterson has an impressive collection, cool to see them make use of the vehicles too. Bummer it shit the bed as it seemed like it wasn’t running that well after the initial launch on that run.
Here in Munich, Bavaria, Germany we have a Collector who owns not 1, not 2 but 3! EB110s and he drives them all regularly, including at high speeds for longer times on the Autobahn.
He isn't the "I cant drive the Car because muh investment" type like sadly so many Collectors in the USA, he's a real Car Enthusiast and drives all of his Cars regularly.
My point being, i think the issues with the EB110 in this Video are because it's a Museum Piece. Most Cars like this NEED to be driven regularly or they will just degrade.
Either way, still awesome from the Petersen Museum to make this happen, so kudos for that at least!

When the F40 turbos kick in it becomes a rocket. It's one of the reasons why it's so hard to drive, it's difficult to predict when the turbos power kick in, and so a lot of unexperienced drivers get hurt.
Jesus, that Viper launch was absolutely crazy.
With some nice clutch smoke as well.
It's really amazing how these two brands evolve from the 90's to now.

Great to see an F40 actually driving for once. Seen plenty static. Just to hear it running is great. It was treated with a lot of restraint - entirely understandable for motoring masterpiece (and value 😊)

They were all gorgeous models. Beautiful cars were made in those years. The Bugatti EB110 was for me the most beautiful model of the manufacturer. I have a mockup of the model I bought over 30 years ago. The shop also had the F40 and the Viper. On the real Viper I loved the big capacity and obviously naturally aspirated engine!
The second I saw Ferrari F40 I knew I had to click it. Such an epic comparison, this is the stuff we dreamed about growing up.
12.2 in a stock Gen 1 Viper is impressive considering there are Gen 2 GTS coupes that struggle to hit low twelves. Now we need Venom GT vs Agera R 👍

Just looking at how the car launched, he lucked out getting a viper with new tires on it. Too many times exotic car owners keep aging tires just because there is still tread on it. He definitely knew where the shift points were.
The Viper is also an icon and deserves to be respected and valued far more than it is!

id say the viper has the advantage of being NA it´s harder to send a turbo charged car because you have to consider when boost is gonna kick in and peak for the first 2 shifts to have the right amount of power. but man these racer where amazing. my favorite cars in a drag race. im a 90´s baby so all these cars i had as hot wheels

I had a pleasure to see F40 twice at Silverstone. It was displayed during GT3 and GB3 (British F3) race. Once it was even driving on a garage lane.

F40 is not pure cause of turbo. Ferrari always were atmospheric. Why they make F50 atmospheric? They should continue to design turbo cars. Instead they retire and abandoned F40 like traitors.

The trick of the Ferrari F40 is exactly that, luring you into thinking you've beaten it, off the lights, right to the moment the turbos kick in. God I love the F40.

There is something so special about drag races in manual cars. The pause on the upshifts just adds to the excitement.

The F40 with the rightangle rear wing is a one of a kind. Insanely special.
The only 1 of 1 was the LM barchetta, really there was a LM GT chassis but that was 1 of 9 prototypes and 19 production LM or comp versions.... prices starting about 10,000,000 😮
Even w all the Bugatti's advantages, you just can't beat the look of the F40. It's simple yet elegant, but brutal. A pure driving experience. Pretty close to Formula for the street.
