Hooray Foods made arguably one of the best vegan bacons you could buy, but unfortunately they went out of business. Food production is a tough tough world, but being the amazing company they were they actually released their recipe!! So I wanted to give it a try and give my own vegan bacon spin on the whole thing!
Now this is super similar to how I already make my vegan pepperoni recipe and a few other starch based vegan bacons so I was excited to see what I could do here.
This recipe is easy, doesn't take very many ingredients and can make enough to have a freezer full of vegan bacon for some time!

That's so cool how instead of being like, "if I can't make this, no one can!" that they decided to share it with everyone. Sucks that they went out of business tho
It really is awesome!! like I get why some companies don't do it, you never know if you can come back, but at the same time good for them for just releasing it anyway. They knew they had something awesome
@@SauceStache I don't think releasing the recipe necessarily prevents them from coming back either. People love convenience foods. I've watched plenty of videos on fermentation and tofu making, but at the end of the day I still buy my kombucha, kimchi, and tofu. I love making my own vegan cheeses, but I still buy the pre-made stuff. I think it's a good PR move in case they ever get funding again because it shows that they're not gatekeeping, you know?
@@msjkramey
Well said!
I agree with all that.
In fact, I wish that they would have put their concerns out to the public earlier in hopes of somebody suggesting a new business plan.
@@msjkramey Good points about coming back. As it is, people can make their own bacon from scratch, or just buy raw bacon, but they still buy cooked bacon, so clearly, there is still a market for this.
In a way it's sad they released their bacon recipe, because by doing so they show how much they truly cared about their goal for why they're making vegan bacon to begin with. It sucks to see companies don't succeed that had real passion
Long ago, one of my favorite vegan restaurants closed down. I asked them for recipes and they were cool enough to give me some! Now any time a vegan restaurant closes, I ask. 😊
(some actually have their own cookbook already!)
I had that happy recently and was told no, I totally understood hahaha but man I woulda loved a few of these recipes!
@@SauceStache That's a shame. Thankfully RUclips and the web are full of creative resourceful folks like you to reverse engineer amazing meals and share it with everyone! haha
Out of curiosity, can I ask what was the restaurant you were trying to get recipes from, and/or the meal?
I had no idea they shared their recipe - this is so kind of them actually! So sad people this thoughtful don't get to make a life doing what they're passionate about! I am sure not many people will try to make this (it is still quite a lot of work) BUT it's awesome we have a resource like this as they've put a lot of time and expertise into developing the recipe!
Didn’t realize how much I missed these bacUn videos until you started doing them again recently! Loving it! One can never have too much bacUn!
I know, im so excited to bring these back! I have a few more up my sleeve for now, but im always thinking!! Another coming late next month!
Me too!
I was wondering why I couldn't find this vegan bacon in stores anymore. I didn't know they went out of business. I'm so glad that they posted the recipe and you made a video on it. I'm definitely going to try this because I loved the Hooray foods bacon so much.
You're going to love it!! if you head to their instagram they have their exact recipe as their last post! I liked messing with it a bit, this is a fun one to use as a base and build from!
I’m wondering (for half recipe) if you could skip the red/white steps if you don’t care what it looks like and just do it all one color? Or does the beet juice add flavor too??
I confess that I have not tried your vegan bacon recipes because I am lazy; however, this recipe looks so easy that I'm gonna give it a try! Wish me luck!
Have you ever heard of Thrilling Foods, and their bacon? They cook theirs in a traditional smoker, and the creator of it was once a meat eater.
I will look them up . Thanks for the tip.
I had Bakon recently at a couple vegan restaurants and it is great! My wife doesn't like smokey foods so didn't like it compared to other vegan bacons. They just more recently were able to beef up production and keep up with demand and enough to sell retail too
I remember we served this at a college I worked at and its amazing
It would be so cool if you cooked all of your different bac'n recipes (or maybe your top 5?) and invited your friends over for a taste test. I wonder which bac'n recipe they would rate the best?
So cool. No animal cruelty ❤
i love it when companies do this. if you're discontinuing something, whether it be a food or a program, make it open source so the people that like it can still have it
I NEED to try this and soon. Thanks for sharing it!
Wow i didn’t know they went out of business that’s cool they shared their recipe
really cool they shared it!
It's super cool of them!!
Another fun recipe to try! Thanks!
I tried this recipe and was extremely pleased with it. Although mine's was very thick. Why? I listened to you and I'm thinking, you used a full sheet pan. So I think my 9x12 cookie sheet will be the correct size, since you said you used a larger pan. Reading the comments I have learned that we both were wrong. You really had a 1/2 sheet and not a full size and my cookie sheet was really too small. 🤦🏾
BUT it still came out delicious! It fried up very well and was chewy like real meat. I have almost eaten the entire pan!! It keeps you coming back for more and more! Great recipe, THANKS!!
By the way, will use the correct size pan the next time I make it👍🏾
Cool ! I can’t wait to try them. Perfect timing on the sheets I need some
They are soo good!!
And these sheets are awesome. We just bought a second set!!
Just fyi, a half sheet baking pan IS a standard size baking pan to a home baker. That's why your bacon turned out so much thicker than the original!
I'm confused. So which size should we use?
@@watkinsabob123a half sheet pan is 18” x 13” , which is what your standard cookie sheet pan is that people will have at home. So use that with the recipe as written! the pan he used here was a half sheet, but he thought it was a whole sheet pan.
“full sheet” refers to the size of a full sized sheet cake, which is 18” x 26”
ive tried every bacon recipe you have made...now this one i got to try since i dont eat pork anyways...but i do miss the taste of bacon. Ive moved to the south where they do not sell vegan/vegetarian things like i was accustomed to so this is a very welcomed recipe! thanks
Which ones have been your favourites?!
OHMYBLOB! Hooray, vegan bacon was by far my favorite vegan bacon. Thank you so much for sharing this. I had no idea that they had shared the recipe.🎉❤🎉❤
Thanks for this video! Interesting - looks tasty
I haven't seen your videos in a while. You two look great! 👊
Great to hear about this company releasing the recipe, this improves my hope in humanity. 😊👍Sadly,my Nana Chayo took her tamale, Guanajuato style with her to her grave.😢
I wanted to try this bacon, but saw some bad reviews so I didn't grab it. Then later I decided to try it anyway and went back to the only store that I knew sold it and it disappeared! I had no idea they went out of business! I'm so mad I didn't buy it when I first saw it, but I'm glad they shared the recipe and I'm going to try this myself when I get some time! 😊
Can’t wait to try this recipe 😋 🥓
Daikon? Broccoli? Rice paper who'd a thought vegan bacon could be so diverse and tasty?!!😋👍🥓🥓
looks fab!
That's very good my friend 😊
omg thank you!! I was so sad when hooray went out of business.
Hmm. This makes me wonder if adding some shredded carrot would help mix up the texture and give it some chew. Maybe a different veg but same idea. I'd definitely add vegimite/marmite to the light mix to give it more deep color and umami. Maybe try some molasses too.
As soon as I saw that wrapping paper, I thought of Gma's house growing up. She only bought meat from the meat market & they would wrap it in white paper. As always, this was so cool to watch, but it was more crispy than I'd like. I would def have to figure out how to get that chewy-crisp. 🥓
I definitely over crisped them haha 😂 you can cook them a little less than what I did and you’ll get the chewy crisp for sure!
@@SauceStache Noted!!
Still my favorite vegan bacon is Happy Veggie World. Heavily dependent on soy and wheat protein and MSG and other related amino based salts. The kind of processed food carnists love to hate on, despite the fact that the real thing is a class 1 carcinogen.
This looks pretty good. I've made wheat starch bacon from left overs of wtf seitan, and feel I've improved flavor by adding a protein source. Get a m8x of chewy and crispy.
Also add a touch of cloves, mustard and fennel.
I'm not fully vegan but there's a brand here in France that I love, I haven't bought real bacon since trying theirs, it's called "La vie" if you're curious to at least take a look online ! They have other vegan meat options too
La Vie is amazing, they now do a sliced “ham” too, apparently
Yes!!
Looks good. Leave it in sandwich sized sheets instead of strips.
TABLESPOON LIQUID SMOKE??? I'LL CHOKE
Off topic, but you look amazing! I've followed you for a long long time!
Do you happen to know how many carbs in this, AND will it shoot up the blood glucose levels you think?
She just came for a great video idea!
Rank the home made bacons!
Thicker is better. You could cut into cold cut shapes. Maybe a round Canadian bacon with a McMuffin or hollandaise
What's the best way to add about 3g of protein to each strip without drastically altering the taste and texture?
I just wish I had that recipe.
Is the beet juice just for color? I am allergic to beets so was wondering if i could just use water instead. I don't care about the color. Also can I use canola oil stead of coconut oil as I am allergic to coconuts. Thanks, great video as always.
I would have tried this if it were available near where I live. I never buy it because they don’t sell any gf versions at my grocery store.
Question: you said this hooray "bacon" was "near the daikon bacon" in quality - of the two, which do you prefer?
Thanks very much!
I may add some strips of rice paper along the white parts for added crunch. And use a combination of molasses (diluted) and syrup.
I'm not vegan but tips like yours give us options when keep getting more expensive. These wd be great snacks, in biscuits & BLTs, and in salads for people avoiding meat or just pork (kosher or sensitivities)
Only a tsp of salt? Sounds like a scant amount. I guess I have to try it. Thx for sharing this.
0:19 no joke - hate when that happens. Thanks for keeping us informed and in the know!!
OK a question how long would you be able to store this on a shelf or in a bag in warm Temps? I see where this would be killer snack food camping or hiking trails for days . If it holds up days or longer I got bacon 🥓 happy camping
And I used cassava ..yes fresh beet juice too...
BFV NAILED THIS..BEEN DOING IT A MTH NOW, EASY PESSY, DELISH!!!
I was thinking that myself.
I wonder if ground chia seeds would work?
But really even adding a few tablespoons of raw plain protein powder might work
@SauceStache I needed a gf for a friend, I was low on rice, so ...and it works great....this batter is truly now my only.....squeeze bottle trick was great....
I really like Morningstar's bacon. But this recipe is worth a try.
It's pretty good but I think this one is over the top!
I WILL CHECK OUT THOSE SHEETS
They are awesome!!!!
Sounds good 👍👍👍👍👍
MY MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!?
MYYYY MAAAAAAANNNN!!!! Thank you for always being here!!
I get the same things from 100 percent bamboo bedding but, for even MORE luxury I treat myself to eucalyptus fibre bedding. Oh boy, either type has the same anti bacterial properties, anti fungal etc. Anathema to mites , bedbugs etc. And these days, I think that every woman in existence should be treated to underwear made from either of these two fabrics. Go on, treat her to these and you’ll be viewed as both a genius, and the very best partner there ever was !
Give it a try, Saucy. Blessings from Scotland. X
He's been using them for weeks but it still has the folds from packaging in them 🤭
I just put a clean pair on!!! hahah ugh Monica said the same thing and I thought about it but didnt think it would be a big deal!
@@SauceStache 😆 I'll accept that. Monica's a wise woman.
Does it taste Coconut Oil ? I really don't like Coconut ... Can I replace by another oil ? Olive oil ?
I WAS TODAY YEARS OLD WHEN I FOUND HOORAY DOESN'T MAKE FOOD ANYMORE T_____T OH GOD
I hope impossible doesnt go out of business. My local grocery store is about to stop carrying them
Hola. Soy Gabi de Argentina. Tus videos son geniales!! Por favor, ponle subtítulos en Español a todos, porque no entiendo. Gracias!
I just came here for the funny comments, but i recommend trying Wrights apple liquid smoke and dare i not say - MSG?
I never saw that brand, but this game changed all my ways....
The Gordon Ramsey of Vegan Cuisine honestly.
They're GONE!?
Im pretty sure I still have some in my deep freezer
What's the reason for coconut oil?
It is the fat, without it, it wouldn't sizzle or have the mouthfeel
1:14 White Rice Flour or Glutinous rice flour? Why nobody specifies?
What did you do with the other red batch? made more off camera. 🧐
It’s crazy bc thats the first time he’s ever used those sheets, they still have all the creases from the bag in them
I have a few sets of these sheets!! I wanted to throw on a brand new set for the video so they were super clean. Thats all this was... but yes those were brand new outa the package
Pomegranate is good for people with low bp.
I haven’t watch in a while -You look great! Vegan diet ?
Lots and lots of work over the last 2 years with a very clean diet.
you can eat vegan Mac and cheese, Oreos and beer on a vegan diet hahah so no it wasnt that.
What would happen if you didn't add the the maple syrup? I've never been a fan of savory & sweet foods.
You would lose a lot of that bacon flavor... I know it's odd but that maple syrup plus the smoke and salt really add up to the bacon taste. You dont get a sweet and savory like taste from this.
Maybe try some diluted molasses? Less sweet and has a dark flavor consistent with meat
Bruh, if you're gonna say y'all have been using a product for a few weeks, y'all should at least wash them to remove that crisp "fresh out of the package" folds. 😂
hahaha its called a second set! ;) I didnt want to shoot with weeks old sheets on the bed.
Add that it's gluten-free in the title, you'll get more likes. GF meat analog recipes are fewer and further between than recipes with gluten...spread the word with gusto! Blessings!!!
wait - hooray foods went out of business???? That's way too sad for me - I agree with you - I liked their bacon, even if it didn't actually taste like it. I did like it better than real bacon with its melty stretchiness
QUESTION: Mark, There’s a company in Canada called The Good Butcher that went out of business or transferred hands. They made the BEST steak I’ve ever had.
We kept the package with ingredients. Want to try to replicate it?
The thicker slices being better is probably why they said to use a half pan....your batter would have spread out less resulting in a thicker slice.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
6 min, it's bubbly...take out
🌟🌈
😮no not a fill tablespoon 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Have you had real bacon? I was just wondering cause if I'm going to try it, I want it to taste like real bacon. I only eat bacon 2-3 times a year, but I am getting into mushrooms to try to fix some of my broken parts.
He definitely looks like a vegan
hahahaha please stick around for like 1 month because from watching your videos I think you're going to want to see what I post in the next few weeks hahahahahahahah
Then I want to see what your comment is.
Deal? haha wow
I went past a snack van doing real bacon the other day.
No vegan bacon smells anything like bacon. It smells like smoke.
I didn't really like the Hooray! bacon. Tasted like greasy burnt cardboard to me. Maybe I'll try making it from scratch though.
So it's bacon flavored chow mein noodles, more or less
Chow mein noodles are egg noodles.
It more closely resembles the process of rice noodles or rice paper, which I said in the video ;)
Watching two vegans who probably tasted meat over a decade ago be like: “yup this definitely tastes like bacon” is not really a reference point lol
lol yeah it wouldn't be. Neither of us are vegan. Not saying I've had bacon recently but it hasn't been a decade.
That being said do you commonly forget what things taste like?
I havn't had one of my grandmothers pies in over a decade and I can tell you right now if someone nailed one of her recipes I would know it.
If you are forgetting what things taste like go see a doctor.
No such thing
NO
Yes

Good recipe. On another note, do you ever wonder why you toast? Where the toast came from? Society just goes along and does things without even questioning why in many cases. Toasting is one of those things. After understanding where it came from, I will not toast. Just something to ponder about. Random I know.
What do you mean? Nobody knows where it came from, definitively. The leading theory is that it was from some ancient libations custom to the gods/ancestors/spirits.
… that’s fine and all… however… have you considered that it would taste and be much better if you skipped the vegan shtick and just did bacon?
Not for me.
Vegan bacon.. a joke that never gets old..🤣 🤣
I guess the only thing that gets old are the childish clowns telling the old stale jokes
@@SauceStache I disagree. A childish clown is not the only thing that gets old. A bored troll who decries videos in which he has no interest also gets old.
@@SauceStache Local, fillet steak is eye-wateringly expensive. Have you a joke, V fake alternative?
Ew lol
The moist ridiculous video, but I guess you have to keep up the monetisation and content.

Everyone is different and I totally get some people won’t find my content entertaining or enjoyable. I’m 100% certain there is something you watch or do that I would find “the moist ridiculous”
But I also don’t put that much care into it, as I would never do what you did.

The wahmbulance has been called for ol' Jimbo. Halp is on the way!
Also, as a meat eater, my meat replacements better be as meaty and realistic as possible.
I have never tried. Hooray Foods bacon. Thrilling Foods makes a vegan bacon that tastes amazingly good. I had it in at Just What I Kneaded in LA. It is very expensive to buy tho
