How to make Bacon from Flour | Vegan Bacon from Wheat Starch

  • In this video I break down the steps to make vegan bacon from wheat starch. I made this crispy crunchy vegan bacon using the washed flour starch by product from making vegan seitan chicken. There is no reason to throw away the starch water. It makes the most amazing bacon substitute I've ever had. If you want plant based pork, look no further. This easy vegan recipe from simple ingredients is another form of wheat meat - using the starch.

    Ingredients:
    Light colored batter
2 cups of starch water - thin, not thick. (1 cup wheat starch powder, 1 cup water)
    1 T mushroom seasoning
    1/2 T vegan chicken bouillon
    1 tsp liquid smoke
    1 T olive oil
    1 tsp salt
    Dark colored batter
2 cups of starch water - thin, not thick. (1 cup wheat starch powder, 1 cup water)
    1 T mushroom seasoning
    1/2 T vegan chicken bullion
    1 tsp liquid smoke
    1 T olive oil
    1 tsp salt
    1 T maggi seasoning
    1 T soy sauce
    1 T red wine
    1 T maple syrup
    1 T smoked paprika
Mix batters well. I like to put them into squeeze bottles.
Heat a large non-stick pan to med low. Brush with oil. Add batters sequentially making variated color strips. Add enough batter to make 1 thin solid crepe. Cook for a minute or two until set and it releases from the pan. Flip and cook 30 seconds or so. Remove from pan and cook the next crepe.
Once all the crepes are cooked, slice them into bacon strips. Heat a pan to med high heat and add a good amount of oil. Fry bacon strips turning a few times until crispy. Remove and drain on a paper towel. Bacon can be stored in an airtight container for several days on the counter.
Bacon Bits: For the crepes that break apart, chop into fine pieces and pan fry with oil until crispy. Drain and enjoy.

It really depends on the size of the pan you use. I remember making about 12-13 but I messed up two of them because I hadn’t added oil yet to the recipe yet. I hope this helps.

That was interesting ! I really like Maggi sauce and I'm amazed that it's not more known here (France). It has a nice "umami" taste that is great to cook vegetarian or vegan food. I used to make lasagna by frying tofu in olive oil with chopped onions, garlic and Maggi sauce. But this is a whole other level !
I still have to try the home made seitan, but I'll definitely keep some starch to make it !
PS: Love the (lovely) "healthy bacon" funny moment. Plant based food isn't necessarily healthier, fries are vegan, but I wouldn't recommend eating too much if you try losing weight :P

You’re very welcome. I just made another batch of these yesterday and they turned out so good. Cooking the crepes on a flat nonstick electric griddle worked so much better than a pan.

This worked beautifully! I made the batters too watery at first but added more starch and it ended up being delicious. The first "gummy" one ended up making great bacon bits, and the chewiness was very reminiscent of fat bits. Love it!
