Your recipes made it so easy to remove the small amounts of meat I ate (Once every couple of weeks) from my diet completely. Guilt-free baby! Great stuff as always.
Mark, I'm loving this casual but refined format. It's slick and chill, informative and concise. Amazing how you've grown into this format. Keep doing you!!
Between your shorts and the recent videos, the production quality of your examples/interstitials has gotten so good recently. I've been loving your and net shaq's ingredient and category explainers. This video was nicely done! I also greatly respect the flex of turning chickpeas into a bacon-y substitute. You continue to innovate in ways that make already craveable and infinitely useful staples like chickpeas fresh, interesting, and even surprising.
It should also be said: foods which inspire contemplative and awe-inspired chewing and just straight-up horking down both have their place at the table, equal in dignity and culinary importance. This definitely falls into the category of "shove into your face as quickly as possible due to amazing flavor" 😂
I have done this by making a chickpea salad (in the vein of a chicken salad) sandwich. But searing/crisping the chickpeas looks like it adds another level!
Yum! I'd probably use Simmnett Nutrition's recipe for bacon sauce and toast the chickpeas in that. (This can be used on anything you want to make taste like bacon. I’ve put it on soy curls, rice paper, and jackfruit. You could probably just use it as a salad dressing if you wanted to. Lol) 3 tb Soy sauce 1 tsp maple syrup 1 tsp paprika 2-3 drops of liquid smoke (seriously, it only needs a couple.) 2 tb nutritional yeast Big pinch of black pepper
Hello! I love this video and the direction you've taken the channel in general with more whole foods and less faux meat replacements, etc. It is good to see your journey and evolution toward a path of greater health!
I'm new to your channel and want to thank you for some great plant based ideas to try as I begin to move toward a more plant based diet. I also love that you share what you prepare with your wife/partner at the end of videos; lovely.
I'm liking this new round of recipes! Sooo good; sounds amazing! That sauce; it could be the base of a great salad dressing! Probably a big "duh!", but I guess I didn't think of the for some reason....
ohhh that sauce is wild!! Toss it in some pasta, super good.. make a chickpea salad... super good.. tofu salad... super good!!! I think you're going to love it!! and thank you!
I've only recently discovered chickpeas - you can do a lot with them. I buy them "raw", soak them overnight in some bicarb, then cook them in the InstaPot to get the aquafaba which I then use in other recipes (aquafaba is a great egg white substitute). Apparantly chickpeas can be made into tofu & tempeh but I haven't tried this out yet. Chickpeas are a little more expensive than other beans so I prefer to use chickpeas for my main dishes (like curries & stews) and soups. I use white kidney beans for bread spreads & mayo etc. This recipe looks very yummy so I'll have to keep a few chickpeas aside for a nice BLT sandwhich (great for summer) - thanks!
Oh yeah! I saw Meati products in my grocery store yesterday!!! They had 3 different kinds. I've tried the crispy one, the plain one, and now they have a steak-like one I'm cooking up right now. 💚
I like your mentions of nutrition. I’m making this. As Warren Zevon said on Letterman back in the day - touching interview if you look it up - “Enjoy every sandwich”.
😝🤪🤪You both make me so hungry at the end of the videos when you eat... Everything always looks so good... 😂🤣😅I'm going to start prepping with having food to eat, while watching your videos...
The flavor combo - great. Especially when the tomatoes are in season! Having said that, I am definitely team Monica when it comes to any sandwiches which are hard to eat without loosing 1/2 of the filling so I would probably put it in a wrap!
@SauceStache I have been watching you since you started and you have changed how I think about food for myself in a more positive light. Love the videos and love when you get obsessed with new ingredients. btw have you ever thought about bringing back animal products into your diet especially with how expensive food has been for the past year?
Think when I try to make this, I will want to make the chickpeas with these spices into patties instead or more refried bean style, than a chicken salad style.
That looks amazing. Do you think it would work as well if I blended the cooked chic peas either alone or with the tofu spread so they don’t fall off the sandwich?
It looks absolutely yummy! As a non meat eater the only thing that’s always problematic for me is tofu. Everything so far that contains tofu is awful. I can’t get past the aftertaste. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to get rid of the aftertaste?
I hate to say it, but -1 point for not seasoning your tomato slices. A THICC tomato slice like that _needs_ a bit of flaky salt to draw out the juices and increase the perceived sweetness. But also + 10 points for calling out how good a boy that handsome good boy puppy is on camera.
True love is the greatest thing in the world, except for a nice MLT. MuttUn, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich, when the muttUn is nice and lean and the tomatoes ripe. They’re so perky!
Seriously though the sandwich you made is awesome! That said, if you get my reference, and if you have time, consider making a vegan MLT in reference to the movie.
COMMENT how much is a half block of tofu???? Weight please or at least the weight of the block. In Australia we have different weight blocks depending on the brand. Thanks in advance. I'm sure your other international subscribers would appreciate the detail.
Hey! Such a cool thing -Did you see Derek Sarno's video today? [the harsh reality (regrets) of going vegan ] where YOUR youTube channel was flashed across the screen AND linked because YOU convinced him to try soya chunks and TVP!
110 pounds, mostly over the last 2 years! Feel amazing, best ive ever felt in my life. Training for a sub 4 hour marathon time, which I couldn't have ran 100 meters a couple years ago!
I love to see vegan youtubers making healthy and tasty recipes. that's exactly what I want to eat at home and, hey, it's also super cheap. Glad to shut some mouths xD
Ok calling you out. Love your show but you either need to get a container big enough for your strainer, or a strainer small enough for your container. I cringe every time you do this in a video and things drip all over the cutting board.
It sucks how much more work and skilk good vegan cooking takes. BLT only requires cooking bacon and assembling your sandwich. This required making mayo & more complex cooking of chickpeas. It looks really good. But it'd def be easier to cook bacon and use store bought real mayo.
Thats not true at all...You're basing the entirety of vegan cooking off RUclips cooking shows. Ever watch BBQ Channels? It would seem like animal based cooking takes soooo much more time if you watch them, they are brining, smoking, and cooking for days straight just to get a roast. I can ALSO just buy pre made vegan bacon, toss it on a pan and throw together a sandwich. I was just making something from scratch here.
@@SauceStache fair point about premade bacon. And yeah, meat cooking can def get complex too. I based my view on personal experience. When i do cook, it's almost always vegan. It's been years since i regularly cooked meat, but i did find it easier to get into, to make tasty dishes that are cooked well. It's hard to judge though, bc it's been so long & an anxiety disorder makes things seem harder these days than in my early 20s. (Early 30s now) At the very least, vegan cooking requires some different skills than meat cooking, and i certainly didn't grow up around vegan cooking.
Call me crazy but this works GREAT with bacon bits mixed into the chickpea mixture and adds even more texture! (I'm not vegan but love cooking with veg!)
@SauceStache I am relieved to hear it took two years. About 55 pounds sort of fell off when I went plant-based, but I have another 45 or so to shed and have been camped on this plateau for nearly two months. I'm afraid the time has come to up my activity game.
I like a lot of your recipes, and I've learned a lot about vegan substitutes in your channel as I've moved towards a more fully veggie diet. However man I don't understand your format of saying, "This is better than bacon!" for this video and others. Don't you think that's going to be off-putting to people that might otherwise be interested in trying this? Let the product speak for itself rather than drawing unnecessary comparisons unless, of course, you're looking to drum up controversy for whatever reason. For this recipe you've posted today there isn't any similarity in flavor between chickpeas and bacon. Absolutely none. Adding smoked paprika and maple syrup doesn't magically make it taste like bacon. You didn't add anything to bump up the umami taste you'd expect of something like bacon like I've seen you do for other videos like your starchy bacon ones. Also fat isn't bad! Fat is an important part of diet, and like all things is good in moderation. This is something I feel the vegan / vegetarian mindset among so many have gotten wrong. Vegan / vegetarian dishes don't have to be competition with meat dishes. If you want to entice people looking to explore more veggie dishes trying to tell them it's better than bacon is a sure fire way to turn them away. As a personal example when I make my chickpea "meat"loaf, and my beef eater friends try it, I describe it as meatloaf adjacent. It almost has the same texture, and the taste isn't far off from what you'd expect of a classic meatloaf. What I don't do is claim it's better than a regular meatloaf. My chickpea meatloaf DOES taste different, but it also tastes good on its own. I don't need it to be in competition with meat to entice my friends to try it.

I think I will compress the chickpea mixture so it doesn’t fall apart - great video !
I bet it would be good that way!!!
I will try it in a wrap. Easier to eat.
You reminded me that a chickpea salad sandwich is one of the best sandwiches! More people need to try this, it's really delicious.
Wow! Can't wait to add this to my weekly rotation! Thx for this amazing CLT
I just had another 1 today!!! Its awesome!! Hope you enjoy

Looking forward to trying this! Tomatoes are ripening in the Garden. :)
Garden tomatoes are the best!!!!! Miss it!! Need to start growing again!
