Looking for a vegan alternative to bacon that still satisfies your crispy, savory cravings? This vegan bacon recipe is not only delicious but also simple to make.
This recipe was inspired by the company Hooray Food’s plant-based bacon. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. On their way out they were incredibly generous and released their secret recipe online.
I took that recipe and made it easier for home cooks. I hope this recipe brings you as much joy as it has brought to my family!

    • @BoldFlavorVegan

I've only ever used coconut oil. If you're going to use a different fat, my educated guess is that you'd have to use something that is also solid at room temp, like vegan butter. Even then, I really don't know if that would hold together in the bacon or how it would taste. If you try let me know!

It looks like glutinous rice flour is required here, don't get it confused with plain rice flour. Glutinous rice flour is also labelled as sweet rice flour or mochiko. It's what's used in mochi and is gummy/stretchy in a way plain rice flour is not. Plain rice flour would probably tear easily and be hard to handle.

The only thing I didn't like about Hooray--and why I would not buy it--was the poor macronutrient profile. A protein analogue should contain a comparable amount of protein. This is something plant-based food companies are starting to pay more attention to, so I hope Hooray's competitors are working on it. In the meantime, I'll play around with this recipe and see if I can't get it closer to the meat version. Thanks so much for posting!

For a lot of vegans, the issue with meat isn't that they don't like the taste, so being able to replicate the taste and texture of meat without having to eat an animal is really useful. Obviously, if you eat meat, keep on keeping on, its totally your choice, but telling someone they need to eat meat because you don't like the thing they choose to eat instead is...troubling.

    • @DreamTerrorist

@@davidmclaine1801 It just doesn't make sense that you'd go through all this effort to make an unhealthy version of something that already exists. I mean I get why, cause you're trying to avoid animal foods but it's odd to me that vegans constantly try to imitate meat. That to me sounds like you guys still crave meat in the back of your mind, otherwise why would you be trying to imitate the texture and flavor of it?

Love rice paper bacon too. My only gripe is that it can be a bit messy and hard to batch cook and store without loss of quality. I wouldn't necessarily say this is "better" than RPB but it fixes those problems for me. I like that I can make these way ahead of time and pop some on the pan when I'm making b-fast.
