Correction...playing "Purple Rain" in a literal Purple Rain!(thanks to lighting)...all the factors needed to coincide for that to happen!...
1st-needed to book prince for this specific SB
2nd-needed to be in an open air stadium in February, not a dome)
3rd-it had to be raining at halftime
This is damn near a religious experience!
Couple that with having the 30 ft banner casting a 25 ft silhouette of a 5'7" man... the metaphorical symbolism of him becoming a giant! In front of millions of people!!

There's an amazing video of Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood and others at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Everyone's doing a great job with the song, then Prince goes on an absolutely blinder of a guitar solo that makes everyone else on stage just kinda stare at him in awe of his talent. Absolutely worth a watch.

Best performance in a do-rag EVER by the Purple One in the pouring rain performing Purple Rain during the Super Bowl Halftime Show! RIP
When the Super Bowl games originally began more than 50 years ago, they basically had college marching bands or cheesy bland really conservative groups performing, but that all changed when they got Michael Jackson to perform, years before Prince. MJ set the standard for the modern halftime program, and his Super Bowl Halftime show is worthy of a reaction. From then on, they started booking more renown artists with a broader appeal to a younger, hipper audience. The Halftime Show thus became an event in itself. i'm not sure about the ticket price, but I've heard they run north of $3000.

    What a great reaction. 🥰
When Prince played, it was soon after wardrobe malfunctiongate and the censors were at high alert. So when Prince played his guitar behind the giant sheet, his guitar was a giant phallic symbol and was Prince snubbing the censors (who he has had a longtime feud with)
Also the Foo Fighters were hanging with Neil Peart and Rush when unbeknownst to them Prince was covering Best of You. Someone ran out to tell them Prince was covering them at the Superbowl. They said "cool"!. He did this because they covered Darling Nikki without telling him.
Prince was the only artist (as far as i know)who added multiple covers to his Superbowl setlist. Sampling Queen, Dylan, CCR AND Foo Fighters. All live! No lip syncing like so many including MJ. Or air banding like Red Hot Chili Peppers(embarrassing).
Real music played by real musicians. Legendary performance. RIP Prince 💔

    Two things:
    1. They told Prince there was a problem, it looked like it was going to rain when he was supposed to perform. His response was, “Can you make it rain harder?”
    2. To answer your question, while there had been some type of entertainment at the Super Bowl halftime show, it became an iconic production when Michael Jackson performed. That changed the halftime show forever. If you haven’t watched it, you owe it to yourself.

Prince was a musical genius and a multi-instrumentalist. He could play drums, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, keybords and synthesizer, he had a wide vocal range and even produced his own albums. He would play all the instruments on his albums, mix them all together and then add the vocals over the music track. He was also a phenomenal guitar player and wrote his first song when he was only 7 years old. He came from a musical family. I became an instant Prince fan as soon as his "Purple Rain" album hit the airwaves around 1984. Now, THIS is a halftime show! You need to watch the video where Prince plays alongside Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, Dhani Harrison and Mark Knopfler to George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". ;-) Peace

I was at the Feb 1985 Purple Rain concert in Los Angeles. I was as almost 15. That, to this day is still my #1 concert. #2 was Music for the Masses at the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Ca). #3 was U2 in Los Angeles right after 9/11.
Two best things about being born in 1970 and raised in Pasadena, Ca. #1 all the genres of music our parents exposed us to and being there for 80s alternative and the beginning of hip hop. #2 growing up with KROQ in my backyard. Being able to meet artists in the alley after interviews was incredible for a young teen. I about died when Robert Smith, The Cure, gave me a hug.
When Eminem and Rhianna played at the Rose Bowl several years ago, some guys told my 25 ye old son that it was cool that he brought me. He said, "No Dude, she brought me".. lol

It’s too long to do a reaction video but you should watch the NFL documentary about this performance. It has a lot of behind the scenes information like how those twins were dancing in two inch heels in the pouring rain.
Halftime shows are a thing at almost every level of football in the USA. High School, College and NFL. In HS and college it’s a marching band, flag team, majorettes and often a dance teams. I was a cheerleader in jr high and high school and we would cheerleaders didn’t perform at half time at football but we did at the half in basketball games. Especially at HBCUs the halftime show is a huge deal. At NFL games the cheerleaders perform but NFL cheerleaders are more like dance teams than HS and college cheerleaders because they don’t do any tumbling or stunts.

Only Prince would play an electric guitar in the pouring rain. He was called that morning by a friend and was told it was really raining hard outside, he is reply was, " Can you make it rain harder. Only someone from Minnesota would reply with that. Where tough hard-core peeps. The best halftime show EVER!!! Ok yeah I'm also from Minnesota. Hard to believe he's gone. He is so very much missed. RIP LEDGEN PRINCE!!!

"How much are Super Bowl tickets?" A month of your income salary to start! Yes, seriously that much.

It costs 1500 per ticket to be able to get presale advantage for next Super Bowl. And that doesn’t go toward the payment of the actual ticket

I'm sitting on my porch and just as the music began rain started falling how magical... A gift from Prince in heaven ;-) seeing him behind that cloth is my idea of his heaven free of pain sorrow and all earthly matters. Now he's in the wind on the air across the globe forevermore

Funny sidebar to this show: the NFL called Prince and asked him if he wanted to cancel due to the rain. Prince's response: "can you make it rain harder?"

I remember watching something about this and they are talking to the production designer of the Halftime show and he tells Prince that it's raining outside and Prince says "Can you make it Rain Harder"

When I was a kid, back in the '70s, the Super Bowl Halftime Shows were always just collegiate marching bands, or so it seemed. But according to wikipedia, recording artists started performing at these spectacles at Super Bowl IV, 1970, with a tribute to Mardi Gras which featured several jazz artists as well as a marching band. In 1976, there wasn't a marching band, & the only act was something called, 'Up With People', which I really can't explain. It wasn't until 1991, believe it or not, until contemporary artists (New Kids on the Block) started being featured. And, it's had more-or-less contemporary artists ever since.

My boyfriend and his friends want to the Superbowl this year. It cost each of them a minimum of $15,000 with travel, ticket, lodging, and food. That did not include whatever side spending they did.

I have great memories as a kid dancing and jamming to Prince’s music. He was HUGE in th e’80s. Later on, would just laugh at how weird and funny he was. Miss him already.

You mentioned Michael Jackson and the Rolling Stones. Both of them are among my top few Super Bowl performances as well. I will also never forget the U2 halftime performance.
