  • The Ocean Cleanup aims to start extracting plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the first half of 2018. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
The main idea behind The Ocean Cleanup is to let the ocean currents do the work. An installation of Ushaped screens channels floating plastic to a central point. The concentrated plastic can then be extracted and shipped to shore for recycling into durable products.
Our passive systems is estimated to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years.
    --
Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. Our passive systems are estimated to remove 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years, and at a fraction of the cost.

    Great Project!
Can we see in more detail how the garbage are collected? we see how it is concentrated, but not clearly how it is put in "containers" neither how these "containers" are put on the boat.
would be nice to see more details
Still, love this project, you guys rocks!!!
the planet and us tell you thank you

I`ve just donated some miles awards from my Flying Blue account to this cause. A very little help, i am aware of this, but if more will do the same i hope will finally matter to this cause. Thank you!

Thank you for this. Finally, we're not just talking about this issue. Although it's depressing to think that they're the first ones to REALLY do something.

Won't this affect shipping if a raid of floating stations is deployed? The ships crew will have to take in consideration the floating stations and their movement when making the passage plan so to pass them without collisions.

Great progress! Thanks to the ocean clean up team for the awesome achievement and the onces to come. One question that I feel wasn't answered was, now that the barrier flows with the currents, what is the procedure to recollect the plastic once collected by the barriers?

I would imagine that bit would be outsourced to plants, maybe they would have to set up a station to sort and clean it before delivery. But of course this is purely speculation.

Why isn't this video monetised? Are any of them monetised? I, for one, certainly don't mind ads on videos for good causes. Like if you agree and lets get these guys to create another revenue generator. Every little helps! Poo

What if ocean animals will be in this 'net'?For example whales, sharks, dolphins and fish?

    • @aerohydra3849
      @aerohydra3849 6 лет назад +1

The net is moving very slowly, so oceanic animals will be able to dodge out of the way. This is not a fishing net.
