How we mapped the Great Pacific Garbage Patch | Research | Cleaning Oceans

  • 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic weighing 80,000 metric tons are currently afloat in an area known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - and it is rapidly getting worse. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
These are the main conclusions of a three year mapping effort conducted by The Ocean Cleanup Research team.
    --
We believe that, to develop the most optimal cleanup technologies, it is essential that we truly understand the problem. Unfortunately, very little is known about the properties and dynamics of ocean plastic pollution - this is why we invest in scientific research. By understanding the sources, transport, and fate of plastic in the ocean, we create the foundation onto which we develop our cleanup solutions.
    --
Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. Our passive systems are estimated to remove 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years, and at a fraction of the cost.

They have showed *ZERO* proof to back up any of their claims of this “trash island” that’s supposedly 3 times the size of Texas.
They’re up in airplanes, they’ve got the time and money to screw around and make all these videos. But they can’t get even *one single picture* of the existence of “trash island”.

I'm old enough to remember when plastic packaging was "the newfangled thing" and most packaging was still paper, glass, and metal. All of which are easily recyclable or biodegradable. All we have to do is just go back to paper, glass, and metal packaging. Recycle/reuse the glass and metal, let the paper degrade. Simple and easy. And not that expensive, since we could afford to buy products packaged that way in the past.

When he said separating plastic from plankton a cold shiver ran down my spine. I live on a river in eastern Kentucky and every time the river rises from heavy rains all manner of things can be seen floating down it. Everything from plastic bottles to coolers to even refrigerators. It sickens me to no end because I know where this stuff ends up. More needs to be done....much more.

I am more than grateful and humbled by the efforts of Boyan and the countless individuals making this happen... I read about his collection/ cleanup design a few years ago and was blown away by 1 thing... It was not his age, or even the simplicity of the design... I was blown away by the fact that this problem has been studied since the 70's and it took a 17 year old kid saying "why not?" to finally get a bunch of adult engineers, biologists, and environmentalists off their ass to create an absolutely simple and logical hypothesis, prototype and solution to this. In addition, his determination surpassed all the naysayers, red tape, and funding hurdles to make his simple solution to a global problem a reality.

I think it is vital to this project to put a stop to the dumping of trash in the oceans. That creates another problem which is how to recycle trash at the collection sites. An important goal will be to inform the public about recycling and to make it more possible for cities to require recycling by consumers. In my city, Leavenworth, Kansas, we don't recycle. The drop-off location has limited hours which makes it difficult for consumers to drop off recyclable materials. Many people just can't do this and there is little encouragement for the rest.
