  • The Ocean Cleanup's System 001/B has successfully captured 60 1-cubic-meter bags of plastic from the Great Pacific garbage patch and returned it safely to Vancouver, British Columbia, where the organization held a press conference today to discuss its plans to develop the plastic into reusable products. We spoke with CEO Boyan Slat about what needs to be done next.

Greta is much younger than this boy, and she is still making a huge impact on the world. I doubt there is money in doing this. Even when the plastic is still on land or in people's homes it is usually difficult to get rid of since it is not valuable enough. No one wants it, recycling only works if someone pays for it, at least where i am from. I do not see how this would change if the plastic takes a detour via the ocean. And even if it actually did make a difference and did make this a money making business i am not sure whether i would like that: imagine plastic in the ocean being more valuable then plastic in a recycling bin. Guess what would happen. So i really hope that this stays a charity project. And that people take their recycling seriously, still the best thing you can do with your trash. After avoiding it in the first place of course.

@@cyberhawk80 Your comments are so wrong on so many levels that they sound crazy to me.
First of all: many men are simply not aware of their emotions and in fact can be easily guided as a result. If you think that you can "direct" all your emotions, you probably fit right into that category.
In fact, higher testosterone levels tend to lead to men being less able to control their emotions.
Also, I bet you don't stay calm if your favorite sports team wins an important game. In fact, many men can go pretty crazy at such moments and women tend to stay a lot calmer.
Second: your reaction also suggests that you don't get the significance of the result presented here. One of the main environmental problems of our time can now be solved with this system.
I don't much care for sports and anyway, this achievement is way more important than winning any sports championship and you accuse me of being over-emotional? Ridiculous.
Take some lessons in human psychology before you embarrass yourself again. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Many billionaires own companies that make things out of plastic. I'm not saying they won't help, but we need to leverage smart regulations on their companies (like a plastic tax) to push them toward alternatives, and then use that income for green cleanup initiatives like this one. Big companies otherwise won't do nearly enough, since they're the ones producing the plastic.

@@xbraac This guy is cleaning up what's already been done. All his work will be for nothing if we don't change our lifestyle. That 16 year old is working at the root of the problem to bring that change. Just think of all those millions of teens, whose life was stuck in instagram, and the people who saw the school strike now aware of climate change. Don't put the two groups in the opposing side. The end goal is same here. Both have strong contribution. Being a fanatic of one group to the point of undermining the other will only work against them. At the end of the day a recognition on a magazine, no matter how popular that is, adds no significance or value to either of their works

Great effort young man. This is something real that can be done. You should be commended for this effort. The sad part is it will just continue until countries realise stormwater systems are the source for this. Some Asian countries are the biggest culprits of this but all countries need to do their part. Plastic containers, bags and wrappings are the problem, so until the packaging industry can change to use different materials you are fighting a losing war. That’s not to disillusion you, but to fix the problem education of governments and people is required. I still see people throwing their rubbish on the street and that’s just not forgivable in any society. Your efforts to capture rubbish from rivers is fantastic and that will remove more plastic from the system than any other effort. Great work.

Really great example you people are setting. I had the same idea in mind back in the late eighties, however I'm an Australian Egalitarian and in the land of the "Tall poppy syndrome", I still to this day, have not been received well. Acquiring the necessary resources to achieve hoped for outcomes continually thwartes me. Hope you all had a great Christmas and all the best wishes for the New Year. You are one of my great lifes passions. May the wind fill your sails and your compass bearings remain true. Much passion from Australia
