The baby boomer leave their children a lot of money, inheritance and a world full of opportunities. You are overly pessimistic and fail to recognize that humanity always rose to the occasion. This problem has been solved already with the invention of biodegradable plastic made from Hemp and Alge. Now new laws need to be passed requiring corporations to use it by law.
In my mind more organic or reusable packaging feels more premium, more 'healthy'. From a marketing perspective more needs to be done to make plastic itself look dirty and less premium. People are willing to pay double the price for mushrooms packaged in a plastic container, right next to the same mushrooms that you put DIY and put into a paper bag. So if people are willing to pay double, the packaging doesn't make the item cost double the price, it's in the consumers mind that something prepackaged is worth that value.

one of the challenges with groceries stores without packaging is unclear expiry date . I moved from Russia to Canada and even after living here for 11+ years still shocked at seeing NO expiry date on some food products and many beauty items. The usual answer from the CS rep is "oh don't worry, we always get new arrivals" , meaning they have a high turn-around. This does not really help to understand for how long it will be good for.
What about the fishing nets?? Marine fishing nets.. why don't anyone speak about those plastic fishing nets which contribute more than these plastics in the sea?
Insane but excellent solution: One of Our biggest environmental problems is non reusable plastics used for food packaging If every government started banning the sales of foods sold at stores (canned foods) and started encouraging people to eat out at restaurants & take outs instead of cooking at home 🏠 the positive impact on environment, economy, health & safety would improve substantially. Solving many of humanity’s problems. The benefits: Major Reduction in plastic use Major reduction in cost of food Major reduction in food waste massive job creations massive industry growth Increase in tax revenues for governments And much more.

We don't need plastic boxes to serve food; the ones made of rice husks decompost in a few days. Already in use in Vietnam and Thailand. Also as mugs :)
Part of the solution could be to require all packaging be 100% recyclable. An investigative journalist in Germany tracked recycled plastic, only to discover containers made with beaded recycled plastic fell to pieces. Reusable glass containers require enormous amounts of water to sanitize them, unless you are going to use irradiation, which creates carbonized bits of food that require water to flush out. Grasshoppers flourish when it gets hot and dry. Grasshoppers are also cannibals, taking delight in eating their dead. It takes 1683 gallons of water to produce 1 lb. of beef. It makes more sense to eat grasshoppers, since 1 lb. of grasshoppers don't consume nearly so much water.
Manufacturers should be held accountable in the production of single use plastics. Ban single used plastic. I dont need my vegetables wrapped in plastic.
Hi team.. Awesome video 👌👌 Just want to share that even India is taking drastic measures to cut down use of plastics... Plastic plates cups and Spoonshave already been banned😃👍
Those items are still there and most measures and high promises India made at UN with cheers and applause were never put to action. India is the most littered country in the whole world
thank you for the video! it feels that alongside with covid-19 also people around the planet should unite very fast and battle this plastics problem, changing the habits, introducing innovations and so on, on an individual and collective level. it is utopic, idealistic however absolutely necessary to avoid the chaos and catastrophic ecological consequences which can happen faster if no significant action is taken.
This is a no-brainer. Re-use plastic as building materials! Plastic blocks, roofing tiles and roofing panels, siding, floor tiles, decking, etc... It can also be mixed with asphalt to make roads more flexible and durable and much more! It should be seen as the new multiuse, ultra abundant raw material!
I am an engineer in PET packaging and the only immediate viable alternative is to curb consumption. Unfortunately humans won’t sacrifice convenience, quality of life for a better planet.
Solution ingredients: 1. Introduce law for plastic packaging to be priced at £/$/€ 1 per GRAMM Yes, just the one ingredient. Expected results: - Consumers will keep plastics to reuse. We never thow away valuables - Companies and corporations will introduce food/drinks dispensers to maximise profits as always - The wealthy few to afford £/$/€10 per GRAMM, will pay for cleaning up Example: 2 litres of coca-cola = £/$/€ 3 1 platic bottle (bottle+cap+labels) weighing 38 gramms = £/$/€ 38 3+38= £/$/€ 41 I can afford to buy a bottle of coca-cola for £/$/€ 41. And i will keep that bottle safe for years.. You can bank on it
Great video. Lose the screeching guy at the start. Tax all non-biodegradable materials and use all the money to clean up the ocean and environment - a self-correcting mechanism.
The crazy part is it's not consumers who demand plastic it's the corporations that want it. In my city a plastic bag ban went into effect a while back. Almost overnight everyone switched to using reusable bags. Most people don't mind and changed super quickly. Same thing with reusable water bottles at my job. If reusable models were more widely implemented people would switch no problem. After all these models worked in the 1950s and before for generations. Glass, paper, metal all of these things work. Corporations just need to stop using plastic for stuff that doesn't require it.
Baggers at the grocery store make me crazy. They will put one thing in a grocery bag. One. They will put something that has a handle into a bag. When will the stores educate the baggers about the plastic problem?
Is good to see that many companies are looking for solutions. The problem is the people. When I go to the store or at work and see how people is not concerned about plastic is just crazy. This is one of the problems that humanity is not willing to solve, just like climate change.
I completely disagree. Shifting the onus onto the consumer to 'be green' is a trick companies have been using for decades to get away with environmentally damaging practices. Companies should be responsible for the life-cycle of their products. While going green as an individual is great, it is not realistic to expect people en-masse to do the kind of research and make the kind of life-changes necessary to tackle large-scale environmental problems. Focusing on individuals just results in annoying virtue-signaling, rather than effective change.
The plastic wastes should be taken care of by the companies that produce them. The consumers should not be responsible for it. Asking the consumers to recycle is same as asking them to clean the dishes after eating in a restaurant. If asking to clean the dishes is unacceptable then so should be to recycle. The governments should fine the companies if their packages are found in the environment outside. If the government keep relying on people to ‘change’ the world will never be rid of plastic waste.
What’s the point of removing the plastic wastes from oceans if tonnes are still being dumped? The companies should be forced to come up with ways to reduce the wastes
Those companies wont exist without us. Both are at fault and being like "it aint me" is just distancing yourself from the problem. Besides everyone who works at one company are customers at grocery shops too.
likira111 that wasn’t my point. I knew people would misinterpret it. Yes of course they wouldn’t exist without us, just like restaurants won’t exist without it’s customers. Try to understand my analogy. They make billions of dollars of us, they can afford to come up with a better system to reduce the plastic waste. I’m not saying “it ain’t me” I’m saying if you rely on the customers to clean up after the company’s mess, you will not get good results
likira111 look up the litterbug concept. When the packaging were first introduced it was the company’s job to clean them. Just as I said. But In order to save them money, they marketed the “crying Indian” campaign and made it the customers fault that the world is “dirty”. And by the looks of your comments I’d say that was a pretty damn good advertisement campaign. It is not our job, no both are not at fault, it’s the companies and the governments that they lobbied for years who are at fault. The reduce plastic waste has been going on for decades now, but has shown very little progress. Because it’s a crappy idea to rely on the customers and say that both are at fault, cos we are not!
@@Vedrajrm So the assholes throwing their plastic garbage into the Forrest outside and littering in national parks can just blame the producer? 'to rely on the customers and say that both are at fault" If you say both are at fault you don't rely on the consumer, nobody is saying you don't need to regulate brands here. But no amount of plastic packaging is gonna make it okay for adults not to know how to operate a trashcan. If you throw mcdonalds containers and empty beer bottles everywhere it IS your fault and you are defending those people by saying customers have no reponsibility.
The companies that make plastic should be the companies that fix the problem of plastic. and I don't even care that they go bankruptcy in the process of doing it. just like they didn't care what their product did to the planet.
Experts can count that if plastic projection continues to expand by 2030 than emissions from plastic production in 2030 will be the “equivalent” of 295 500-megawatt coal plants, but they struggle to calculate that plastics is not the cheapest material for packaging due to negative impact on the environment.
To start all plastic bags from all retail stores should be banned 🚫. And also ban one time use water bottles, coffee and drink cups. they are the worse. Please bring cloth bags to the grocery and other stores. Use reusable water containers. Do your part, every little bit helps!
Plastics are inside most cars from your fuel tank to your bumper, and more plastic is being use in cars to make it more affordable. The product comes out sterile and convenient to use on goods.
Today I decided not to go on the sea water while on vacation in Phuket because the water was so full of plastic waste. Its a shame because this was not the case just 10 years ago. I cant imagine what it will look lile in 10 more years if nothing drastic is done to stop plastic waste.
Imagine if the top 10 corporations for jar and bottled foodstuffs (KarftHeinz, Nestle etc) signed up to a standardised glass jar and bottle system. But allowed any company to use them. These could be cleaned and returned to superarkets around the world, for a price per weight (saw this in Czech Republic in '97). Then jars and bottles collected in any country, would just need to go to the nearest bottling plant for reuse. This could be Thailand, these are filled, and sent around the world. When that jar/bottle appears in France, it returns to it's supermarket and is collected by a french bottling company, to be filled and sent onwards again. A glbal use of a standard jar and bottle system, where manufacturers just reused and labelled.

It seemed like everyone forgot this was important during the pandemic! I like what Mad Money said- can't only depend on the good nature of people.
As a Baby Boomer i have witnessed an era of amazing advancements in all facets of life but it is now apparent to all that it has all come at deadly cost. As a parent I'm ashamed of the mess we have left behind for other generations to fix.

The baby boomer leave their children a lot of money, inheritance and a world full of opportunities.
You are overly pessimistic and fail to recognize that humanity always rose to the occasion.
We have every reason to be optimistic. Human genius solves everything and every generation faces challenges.
And for the plastics there are companies which recycle plastics.
@@johnmajor9564 human overpopulation is a major issue for the people that is being born. Reciclying isn't the solution for every pollution problem, you need to avoid producing a lot of waste.

Anyway, You want plastic and You want to vote greedy people in office
But still engineers like us are working to solve this issue, ever heard of companies turning plastic into FUEL NAH who’s so free for that?
Nor in india countries with over 200 mn people cant transition easily but here we have banned some forms of it in many states
Avoid Plastic, Save Environment.
This problem has been solved already with the invention of biodegradable plastic made from Hemp and Alge. Now new laws need to be passed requiring corporations to use it by law.
Simple and idiotic solutions that don't actually address the issue
The corporations that run our governments will never pass such laws
I mean if we go back to glass and tins for grocery drinks and just return them for factory reuse would be better
costs more...
Over consumption is destroying the planned, we’ve got to stop this now.

one of the challenges with groceries stores without packaging is unclear expiry date .

Reduce and reuse. Technology cannot solve all problems if we out-consume plastics compared to biodegradable materials.
0:30 some gloves are nitrile, and could be made compostable.
None of these are legitimate competitors. Going to take a major breakthrough in materials science to fix this issue.
Companies need to take accountability and be held accountable. They're the ones pushing single-use packaging on us, consumers aren't demanding it.
Insane but excellent solution:
One of Our biggest environmental problems is non reusable plastics used for food packaging
If every government started banning the sales of foods sold at stores (canned foods) and started encouraging people to eat out at restaurants & take outs instead of cooking at home 🏠 the positive impact on environment, economy, health & safety would improve substantially. Solving many of humanity’s problems.
The benefits:
Major Reduction in plastic use
Major reduction in cost of food
Major reduction in food waste
massive job creations
massive industry growth
Increase in tax revenues for governments
And much more.
I have an idea to get rid of this problem. The issue is that it requires a significant change in the world economy.

I wish we have resolution to recycle plastic.

Reduce, reuse, recycle
8:30 really ? You put your new plastic in normal plastic ?
So we can solve it by doing these 3 thing:
1) reduce human population
2) reduce plastic
3) burn the plastic you do have to buy
Solution ingredients:
1. Introduce law for plastic packaging to be priced at £/$/€ 1 per GRAMM
Yes, just the one ingredient.
Expected results:
- Consumers will keep plastics to reuse. We never thow away valuables
- Companies and corporations will introduce food/drinks dispensers to maximise profits as always
- The wealthy few to afford £/$/€10 per GRAMM, will pay for cleaning up
Example:
2 litres of coca-cola = £/$/€ 3
1 platic bottle (bottle+cap+labels) weighing 38 gramms = £/$/€ 38
3+38= £/$/€ 41
I can afford to buy a bottle of coca-cola for £/$/€ 41.
"logistics"/"management" of habits is the main way to reduce plastic production/use pollution.

Focusing on individuals just results in annoying virtue-signaling, rather than effective change.
and not even just the consumers, also companies but a lot of pressure to local and regional governments to invest into waste collection and processing
EARTH: I got a bad case of the humans.

I'd gladly vote for plastic restrictions or fines. Most is not being used to "save lives". I never asked for plastic wrapped lettuce.
Ban Black Friday, regulate garbage disposal, and production of anything plastic. It’s a huge industry if we all work together for this cause.
