So many people spent the night on the streets and went home on the first subway train. This is a victory for high civic awareness.

I would agree but the military itself issued orders to seize media outlets and some soldiers began fighting with protesters, so it needs to be looked into again. Ordinarily, they should've refused to follow the order.
There are often Koreans in comment sections who say it is shameful, but this is a misguided way of thinking. In any country and any era, it is inevitable that there will be flawed leaders. A nation's strength does not come from a single leader-be it a president, prime minister, or king-but from the awareness and actions of its people and their representatives in dealing with poor governance. Therefore, the Korean people should not feel ashamed but instead take pride in having swiftly lifted martial law in just 155 minutes.
There are millions of korean citizens who support the president's action on 12-03. You should dig why it started, why the soldiers carried weapons without ammo in the city, why the president sent militery to korean national election commision. The president sent troops without ammo to capital hall building, but sent troops fully equipped to national election commision. Maybe he had no business in capital but the elcetion commision. This is not about a president who wants more power on his hands. This is fight of millions korean people against socialists and comunists who are controling 2/3 of korea parliment. Korea has become a country where the constitution cannot arrest one politician who is accused of many different crimes. While investigating him, 6 of his staffs who also accused of same crime were found dead. Its been several years trying to arrest this man but the democratic party is protecting him with all the power they have. The democratic party impeached prosecutors who investigate their leader. And they keep impeaching the prosecutors whoever comes next. Now they are playing with goverment budget, and it is a joke. I will write a few 1. Assigned $0 for district prosecutor 2. Assigned $0 for board of audit and inspection. 3. Assigned $0 for president. Basically the democrats assigned zero dollar for key deparment who investigate politicians doing unlawful. Ppl showing tears in the street, they are the supports of the democratic party. And the medias in korea are more rigged than cnn. This is status of democracy in korea. It seems people laughing at his failed militery action but the supports know it was his final strugle and we thank for his courage. So this is my side of the story.
Why does this guy presents the situation as a problem of the Korean democracy? To me it's the opposite. It proves South Korea is a mature stable and developed democracy as the democratic process was uphold immediately. There is no level of democracy that can prevent a stupid president from doing stupid things. The question is what are the consequences. And there will be in SK. By this guy's logic, America is a fragile democracy because of everything Trump did, and the storming of the capitol hill just to name two recent events.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. The people showed the world that they will not bend to reckless acts of politics. South Koreans are some of the smartest, and best informed populace in the world. The people matter in a democracy. Governments come and go, but the people remain. As long as the people stay properly informed, resilient, assertive, and cooperative South Korea's democracy has a brighter future ahead.
Very wrong comments. These mal informed comments makes me feel threatened as a South Korean. People getting it all wrong. President Yoon is working so hard to protect the country. I am a person. One of many who support president Yoon. And one of many who voted for him. Where is the justice in impeaching a president who got elected by the people for the people? The national assembly is a crook full of aristocrats and North Korean spies.
Funniest thing is people went to sleep and haven't even woken up yet and all this has occured Edit: No it's not "funny" but like we say in America "Did you die?"
This is an example showing that education and the national system are important in protecting democracy. All citizens, including martial law troops, are taught in history classes how South Korea overthrew the dictator and achieved democracy. Also, South Korea's three-power separation system and democracy function very well and are the best in Asia. Even if there is an individual who wants to abuse power, the system and the people's sense of protecting democracy can prevent it.
He had backing from high officers... He changed the key military generals to to this. 1st paratroopers and special group #707(The group enter the Assembly, top in building, main role to kill the enemy leaders and anti-terrorism force), with two 11th and 20th air wing(with F35) + Police. And few armored brigades were ready to roll in morning. It was low level officers, NCOs and soldiers who sabotaged the operation. They broke the windows and entered slower than grandma. Did not insert the magazine or blue one(practice blank).
It looks like he had the military support, just didn't had enough civil support and probably US support (under the current administration, the next one would have supported him). It looks loosely similar to what almost happened in Brazil, where they had some civil support from the far right voters, plus the military but US didn't have them their bless, so no coup.
Im from Korea and in my opinion, it was the soldiers who hesitated to follow the order because they must have seen reactions from people on their iphones or laptops. From the moment the martial law was declared, they knew everything. This is the power of media, i guess
The president basically lost this fight , meaning he most likely will be forced to step down and probably will be jailed for treason and his wife for corruption.
This is what “they” want. They are trying to impeach our president. This is why the president is summoning emergency measures to protect the administration. The SOUTH Korean government. In order to put North Korean regime followers as president. Just as they impeached president Park and put Moon in its place. We will not let it happen again. This time we fight.
The guy is a loon and loves booze. People are now saying he didn't like what's happening to him and to his wife (corruption charges), got drunk, declared Martial Law, got up sober, realized what he's done, then backtracked. But he went too far this time. There will be consequences.

The generation in their 50s and older in Korea personally experienced the tragedy of dictatorship and military coups, while younger generations, who did not live through these events, have witnessed them indirectly through countless Korean films and dramas based on real historical and political events. These works have prompted them to reflect on dictatorship and democracy. Korea stands as the only country in Asia where political and historical topics can freely be explored in films and dramas, demonstrating the deeply rooted democracy in the nation. When the president of South Korea lifts martial law, it typically means that the extraordinary powers granted to the military and government during a state of emergency are being revoked. Martial law can involve restrictions on civil liberties, such as freedom of movement, assembly, and the press, as well as the military's involvement in maintaining public order. Lifting martial law usually signifies a return to normalcy and civil governance, indicating that the government believes the situation necessitating martial law has stabilized. It can also reflect confidence in the rule of law and the ability of civilian authorities to manage the country without military oversight. This action can have significant implications for political stability, public sentiment, and the restoration of democratic processes.

President is very unpopular and then accuses opposing party of being full of North Korean sympathizers and then invokes surprise martial law. Korean parliament rushes to repeal martial law.
The opposition party did not approve next year's national budget, which made him extremely angry and led him to impose martial law. This type of martial law lacked justification, and as a result, it did not gain much public support. Moreover, he did not even adhere to the constitutional provisions related to martial law.
An unpopular president after he’s impeached, please don’t let him run again. Please don’t let him run again. He might win and the world goes into flames. 🔥
We had communism before 1989, we know these propagandy speeches about looking for enemy between us, speech of Korean president sounded exactly like that, he just has different enemy, it's pure propaganda, he is probably very paranoid and this was just attempt to take full power and turn Korea to totaleratian once again. If he had actual reason to do this, he would have to get mandate for this from parliament before. You can dislike some political party, but you can't just mark them as "north korean friends" and send army at them, the hell, this is how revolutions and totaleratian starts. It's pretty much what happened here in former Czechoslovakia in 1948 after commies marked all democratic parties as enemies.
1:00 Those soldiers... the best special forces personnel in Korea. If they tried to put it down properly, they would have ended the whole situation in 10 minutes. But they were not. They were people who had to obey orders but were also trying to defend justice. We Koreans appreciate this.
fun fact: 140 years ago,(December 4, 1884) in korea, There was a military coup called the Gapsin-Coup. It occurred on Dec. 4 and lasted only three days, until Dec. 6, a total of which was suppressed afterwards. In Korea, this is called the Samilcheonha(three-day coup). Returning to the today, some Koreans use to call today the three-hour coup.
South Korea escaped from the establishment of a dictatorship in the country. I give thanks to the opposition for stepping up and defending democracy. President Yoon should step down as leader of the Republic of Korea. I’m glad that the National Assembly members are still in the chamber to make sure that Yoon backs down and having the South Korean military and police retreat from the building.
Thank you for saying this. I think a lot of people feel shamed because they voted for this guy two years ago, including myself.
This is so touching ❤
50년동안 쌓아올린 국가의 이미지를 윤석열 저 한 명이 한순간에 무너뜨렸습니다. 당연히 이건 부끄러운 짓이지
thank you 고마워요😢
I will write a few
1. Assigned $0 for district prosecutor
The US is a fragile democracy
The US is indeed framed as a fragile democracy by the world after the events of the US Capitol Riot.
Oh shut up😂
There was no storming. It was FBI backed. The weaponized alphabet agencies are more of a threat to democracy than Trump is.
You think a country where the current president almost became a dictator with the military’s support is a stable democracy?
“Let’s counter a North Korean dictatorship with our own dictatorship!” - Yoon
South Korean democracy has existed since the late 80s. Being a dictatorship again is something that could further prove the North’s POV.
It should be one country.
South Korea was actually under dictatorship after its independence until late 70s.

The people matter in a democracy. Governments come and go, but the people remain. As long as the people stay properly informed, resilient, assertive, and cooperative South Korea's democracy has a brighter future ahead.

BRO DID A COUP WITHOUT MILITARY BACKING WHAT A NOOB

Moral of the day: Don't vote for moron!
The opposition party did not approve next year's national budget, which made him extremely angry and led him to impose martial law. 1:00 Those soldiers... the best special forces personnel in Korea. If they tried to put it down properly, they would have ended the whole situation in 10 minutes. But they were not. They were people who had to obey orders but were also trying to defend justice.
We Koreans appreciate this.
Bro folded so quickly
Curb your enthusiasm
Straight to jail
He just got the WR for an any% martial law run.
The president was testing how far he could go. The people Spoke Loudly!
fun fact: 140 years ago,(December 4, 1884) in korea, There was a military coup called the Gapsin-Coup.
Democracy survived from being destroyed by the President. I say that Yoon should step down as President of South Korea.
Is he stupid?
Its like political suicide
He is lol parliament is debating impeachment
The South Korean president envies the control that the North Korean president has.
What a disappointment!
It's the same in the U.S
@@Xxxxxhccxywhat's the same?

@@Xxxxxhccxy There will be protests like never seen before if Trump tries to implement martial law in the United States.
That prospect would terrify Trump and I'm sure he's carefully following the events that are now playing out in South Korea.
@@shinichikudoz And failed spectacularly he did. I can't imagine how humiliated the South Korean president is feeling. It's not just in South Korea. The humiliation extends worldwide.
