In the West, the individual is the basic unit that all of society is ordered around, and the power is diffused within rule by the many. In Asia, the emphasis is on the group, or the clan, and to govern so many, power is routed primarily through a few individuals. The defining issue of our era is deciding which system will dominate the other and triumph. Only one will be applied all over the world in the future. Its no longer about capitalist vs communist, that is yesteryear's conflict. And each system benefits some at the expense of others. The Chjnese or North Korean leaders say that in the West, ppl may not be starving to death, but that they are still wage slaves that are given the illusion of political choice. the system never adapts to address their problems, so ppl use drugs to dull the pain of being a voiceless consumer who will be forgotten bc they could not afford to start a family and worked for a corporation their entire life. Pretty frequently I'll complain because there's "no food in the house", even though my pantry is stocked and there's stuff to eat in the fridge. We've become so picky because we have access to so much, and I feel so incredibly privileged. Watching stuff like this really puts into perspective how grateful I should be. Makes me sad, honestly.
There have been photos shared on various YT channels smuggled from NK showing people pulling grass on the side of the road to take home to eat. What kind of leadership forces it's citizens to resort to eating grass??
When people are desperate and know they'll die anyway, they'll take whatever measures they have to in order to have even the slightest chance of survival.
In 1996 I was in my office in Seoul, South Korea when a North Korean fighter jet flew over my office. We all looked out the window and observed it was flying so low we could see every detail of the plane. It was doing laps over Seoul. Later we learned he demanded permission to land before he would run out of fuel and crash. The pilot was granted permission to land. The pilot said he put his entire family in danger by defecting but needed to tell everyone how most were starving to death at that time. Sadly nothing has been done to help the North Koreans. I wonder if this generation of North Koreans will eventually revolt against the Kim regime, or will they just just lie down and starve to death?
How could they revolt? They have no means to fight the military. Soldiers even starve in the military but the officers must still be fat or else they would organize a revolution.
They can't revolt, they'll be executed immediately, they execute three generations of your family for treason, would you risk all your families lives to revolt?
The unfortunate thing is that starving people can't physically put up much of a fight if they wanted. Looking at similar catastrophes like Auschwitz it was noted that revolts only ever had small successes right as the trains arrived and with the crematorium slaves which were the only ones that received decent food rations.
I have heard that you sexually and physically abuse your relatives, male and female. There is an animated film with actors voices to prove it. Obviously you accept this evidence and admit your guilt.
AND the govt response admits some of the information is TRUE. It's been a hellhole since 1950s and for some reason killing off the people in the countryside outside the main city is in their best interest. For a while the govt was making the farmers into slaves by coming by and pretty much stealing the entire crop not even leaving enough to live on to feed the family who grew it to for use to feed the military. It's a heartless regime but Stalin and Mao and PolPot all refined this method. All totalitarian top down one rule governments act like this.

Watching this, I hope that the 3 who shared their life stories weren't sacrificing their lives and the lives of those they love in order to get this info to us. I thought so too, they straight up gave away their location, jobs, and family members??? If there's one thing the north korean government is good at, it's control of information. They probably wouldn't even need to do field research before making a short list of potential insiders. After that, all they need to do is mark each of them until they gain confirmation.
I know everyone has the right to be sad but the past few years ive started feeling depressed but videos like this make me question if my problems are even problems to begin with.
Another's pain doesn't diminish your own. Have empathy for others, but please, also care for yourself. You are still worth it, even if others have it worse.
I think thats because we compare ourselves to those around us and not to the greater world. Expanding your perspective can sometimes have that effect, I dont know about your personal situation but atleast your not in North Korea, and whatever your issue is stay strong, walk tall and dont quit fighting is all I can say.
A man having his leg cut off will never not be in pain during the process just because the man next to him is having both his legs cut off. Just like how a mother's pain of losing a child will not lessen just because another mother lost two children. You can understand that others have it worse than you without taking away from the pain you are currently suffering. Besides, do we really want to live in a world where people are less sad solely because they see others suffering worse than them? That would slowly turn toxic over time.
North Korea has a declining birth rate. It is a bit naive to think people are not giving in to sexual urges or that they somehow must control even this aspect of their lives by simply abstaining. The government spends less than $1 per person on health care. I doubt contraceptives are given out freely.
This is true, they force people to have kids. Especially in the camps, they match make slaves so they can make more slaves. You're not asking the right questions.

But when?
You actually bought into this lazy half assed agit-prop… Literally everything attributed to the repressive regime of North Korean holds triply true for the US and UK.
It's truly sad that one human being could be that cruel to a whole country of his people. He has the power to be good to help his people but for some reason he refuses
Not when they’ve been sanctioned by every country on earth except Iran and china. The nation does have the resources to make it slightly less miserable, but if the government didn’t oppress their people to such a high degree, they would absolutely organize a revolution. The hopelessness benefits those at the top
If the people there had a chance, they would hang him and do worse to him. Like what happened to Ceacescu in Rumania. Or Mussolini in Italy. The North Korean dictator wants to be treated like a god and have absolute control.
Brought into the world to suffer... Yeah, like pretty much all the rest of us, unless you only have Y chromosomes, in that case, you're a protected and privileged class.
“If we are going to die anyways, let’s take down the regime, at least the next generation will have a better chance to survive.” Shouldn’t this be what they are thinking instead of waiting to die?
I don’t know. I don’t think we can really imagine what they would’ve wouldn’t be thinking. It’s not just them who would die if it didn’t go the way that they wanted it to. They have to consider their families. If you do something like that in North Korea, three generations of your family get sent to a prison camp. Normal people don’t have guns. They don’t have access to the arms needed to bring down the country. There’s no organized effort to do this because of informers. It’s just so awful. They would need the military to be in support or something like that, but I don’t see how that would happen. The rest of the world won’t do anything because North Korea is allies with China and Russia, so, no one is willing to stick their neck out to help a people, who has been systematically oppressed, for over 70 years. It’s awful, but it’s the reality. I wish I could do something to help, but I don’t know what. I really do care about the people there, and I pray to God that He would give me some way to help them and, far more importantly, that He would turn the heart of their leader to good, and that He would help the people.
I thought I lived in a doomed and bad country. But after watching this, I'm am more than lucky. It is really sad and devastating to be born and live in a prison like N.Korea. These poor people just want to die, they welcome it. Can you imagine your own life being so bad and the excruciating pain from hunger and exposure, that all you wish for is death… an end to it all. These people need to be liberated and re-educated, welcomed into true freedom, normal society, & safety, but is it too late? Can North Korea actually be saved?
It can. Ofc, it would take decades for the country & society to build themselves up again. But Koreans are strong, hardworking and itelligent. If South Korea can reach such wealth & level of development, in time so can the North.
@@Ghetto-Gekko It seems highly unlikely that there is an actual source in North Korea here. More likely a South Korean scam to sell some juicy stories to a naïve Western journalist.
Once upon a time there was a similar situation: A fat king, an ignorant queen, and their starving people. It ended in the French Revolution. About time the people take their future in their own hand.
As an expat who lives in S Korea, this news story really makes my insides hurt. A totalitarian govt like this must end, but the world cannot do anything I guess. There are so many things that are unjust in the world, but this govt has no place to rule over others when they purposely let them die and starve. The people will have to revolt, a revolution, where they can break free from this tyranny. Perhaps then, the rest of the world could come to their rescue.
Although seemingly not the case, the existence of the Kim family's regime also greatly impacted the development of South Korea. The border has been fortified soon as the war was "over," and the self-proclaimed free government ironically fed certain companies to a rapid growth with direct intervention and support. Practically an island with no land connection to other countries, South Korea quickly shifted towards mercantile businesses, exporting cheap but effective goods to as many countries as possible. This eventually resulted in those certain companies rising as megacorps which are now widely known by the names of Samsung, LG, Hyundai, GS, and so on. The South Korean economy has reached the point where it is largely dependent on export and will meet its doom if any of these megacorps were to collapse, yet millions and trillions of dollars are spent on fortifying the northern border and shielding the country. Despite past attempts to negotiate with North Korea and offer aids, the regime still stands for over 70 years, regardless of how concrete it may seem. Those who have witnessed the tyranny and brutality of the North have died of old age, and the younger generations in the South openly admit that they see no way to reunite with the North, unless there is any form of violence such as a mass uprising inside North Korea, or the continuation of the war. This phenomenon is more prominent with young South Korean males, who must go through a conscript period of 2-3 years, potentially more depending on which branch and service they choose. The fact that they have to waste a large part of their youth for an act they didn't choose comes as a great frustration, and the following anger is directed towards the North. Although both the constitution and the army of South Korea agree on that the northern half is not to be recognized as a separate country and is a land that must be reacquired, their desired methods are direct opposites. The constitutional law says that a peaceful method is preferred, but the army internally educates their soldiers that the North Korean army is not an officially recognized army, but a bunch of mobsters that defend a pointless, meaningless cause of socialism forced upon them by the Kim regime, and that they must storm the North as it is the most effective way of wiping socialism off the Korean land.
how do you know that people are starving in North Korea, how do you know anything about life there, I assume from those few people who escape every year, but can those people be trusted, what if they are criminals who escape from prison for example, wouldn't they lied everything. When I was 9 years old, I watched a documentary about the North-Korean famine. It detailed how orphan children starved and were butchered as meat to survive. Images of emaciated market sales people with chunks of limbs on display. This documentary made such an impact on me that I wrote a lengthy essay about it in school detailing what I learned. 16 years later I went to South-Korea. I found it to be more technologically advanced in some respects than my own country. I felt the effect of the war-tensions. The propaganda speakers were put on the first time in decades, a S-Korean soldier was injured by an illegal mine on patrol, I visited the DMZ (and I bought North-Korean banknotes and plumwine as my souvenir), and I hiked across militarized zones in Seoul, I saw the subway systems filled with gasmasks and provisions for a sudden crisis, I was there when the periodic family reunions of North and South Korean were hosted to give them one day to spend with their lost relatives. I wondered since Covid how North-Koreans are doing. It went quiet, and I assumed the dynastic military government would reign with utmost control. I didn't think however that the documentary images that made such a deep impact when I was 9 are on the brink of repeating themselves. I feel very sorry for North-Korean people who live in this state-sized prison system.

I've been to South Korea several times, and in a splendorous city like Seoul, it's really easy to forget that this kind of horrible regime exists just 50 kilometers Northwest. I never visited the DMZ, because to me as a German, it's just too macabre to treat the border of a split country as a tourist attraction.
I've never been there, but being from the United States, this always was crazy to me too. That's like driving to another state.
Was the Berlin Wall not a tourist attraction, even if unintentionally?
@@juliansmith4295 It was. I went there, but the East Germans were a bit more welcoming than the North Koreans. You could take a bus tour of East Berlin with an East German guide.
How horrible
The unfortunate thing is that starving people can't physically put up much of a fight if they wanted.
Looking at similar catastrophes like Auschwitz it was noted that revolts only ever had small successes right as the trains arrived and with the crematorium slaves which were the only ones that received decent food rations.

I completely agree….this video puts so much into perspective. It offers another sense of humility
But I’m a bit baffled why they still decide to have kids in that situation. I mean people born there are pretty much doomed…
North Korea has a declining birth rate. It is a bit naive to think people are not giving in to sexual urges or that they somehow must control even this aspect of their lives by simply abstaining. The government spends less than $1 per person on health care. I doubt contraceptives are given out freely.
Because they are forced to, there’s even a video of Kim telling people that the birthrate is declining and women need to have more kids.
This is true, they force people to have kids. Especially in the camps, they match make slaves so they can make more slaves. You're not asking the right questions.

How can he and his wife go to bed and rest peacefully at nights??? Even if he keeps his people shelter from the rest of the world, how can any human being starve people to death? Wicked!
I feel very sorry for North-Korean people who live in this state-sized prison system.
the UN stopping at the 38th parallel was an absurd mistake in the korean war... douglas macarthur was a good general... but he made an absolutely massive mistake.

@@Pilvenuga the situation was that nothing was even tested and the UN didn't even try fighting back against chinese forces, it would be completely different if they tried investing and got bad results, then made that choice based off of failure, but that was not the case, the US didn't even try.
