      DEADLY MICROPLASTICS?
fish is the primary source of protein for nearly one-fifth of the human population. the microplastics ingested by fish and crustaceans can be subsequently consumed by humans as the end of the food chain
microplastics find their way to human consumption not only from sea food but also from table salt. researchers in china tested three types of table salt samples available in supermarkets and found the presence of microplastics in all of them
polyethylene terephthalate (PET), dimethyl sulfide, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene, phthalate &
polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are some of the "environmentally-toxic" components / ingredients (plasticizers) of a plastic
which of these components / ingredients (plasticizers) of a plastic has strong potential to be carcinogenic / mutagenic (esp. the liver) when consumed by aquatic organisms and ultimately consumed by humans in the food chain?
which of these components / ingredients (plasticizers) of a plastic that is considered to be "endocrine disruptors" (affect the testes) and metabolic disrupters (affect the liver)?

I think they might be misusing their time on this effort today. The faucet is still running and getting worse, and they’re focused on getting towels on the floor. I just hope there is an equivalent or greater amount of brain talent working towards preventing plastics from being dumped into the oceans around the world in the first place. Get that faucet turned off.

What people do not realise, is that alot of plastic (and other trash) gets into the ocean by hurricanes, typhoons, floodings etc. Especially in poor countries they do not handle all the (plastic)thrash that well so it gets easily flodded into the ocean. So its also necessary to build recycling facilities in those countries next to cleaning up the ocean.

If the ocean cleanup is propelled only by nature it will travel at roughly the speed of the garbage around it... If that is true it wont catch that much of garbage as it sounds , maybe it is better to but sails or some kind of propelling device onto the system.
Keep going and design the future!

Chuonon from what I understand, they have data about ocean currents etc. that helps them predict how the plastic moves, calculate where to launch the cleanup systems, and so on. Notice how much they talk about data? This technology is not just the rafts that you can see - a key ingredient is data processing. I think they are ambitious, but I believe they can achieve their goal :-)

Anyway are computermodels limited especially in high current areas in the middle of the pacific , there are a lot of omitted variables which could bias the estimation of the direction and force of currents and winds.

Given the size and shape of the cleanup device, it may well travel at a different rate then the relatively small bits of plastic it’s trapping in the net. I don’t think it would take much difference in speed for the garbage to accumulate in the net over time. Just my educated guess.

The largest problem is third world countries whose governments have not come up with a viable waste collection and disposal system. Because of that people have nowhere to put their trash except outside - wherever. Then, when it rains, that plastic floats on the rainwater to the streams and rivers and out to the ocean.
