Great invention. One little thing though... what happens with the plastics it collects? Are there legislations which prevent them being shipped back in to the environment? Or will they simply be shipped to a third world country where they'll be dumped in to the ecosystem as it currently happens? Removal of these pollutants is one thing, but until humans develop clean way of recycling or completely utilising such materials... the cycle will never end.

@@StrzelnicaFX Super good point. Japan for example exports 70% of its plastic household waste to countries like Malaysia. And there, it flies around and ends up in the environment. I really think the industries have to start using replacements for plastics like plant based materials.

Unfortunately, now people will just think it’s ok to toss trash into the river 🤦🏼‍♂️
We have to stop thinking humans are smart enough (as a whole) to solve these problems.
Sadly, the only real solution is to threaten humans (who violate the planet) with heavy community service punishments.

@ci rob No they wouldn't. No matter how much money you got, you can always help. Almost anyone got a least 1 dollar, euro, pound, whatever currency to save, even way more. With that money you could buy and plant a tree. It's just what people call a priority and climate change ain't on almost no-one their list.
This guy named Boyan Slat ain't no millionaire, he received the money by opening a gofund me page.

For example my mother in law was complaining that there is so much garbage in the street and literally a minute later she rolls down the window of the car and throws out a plastic bag.
If i do that back in Holland i'll get a fine by that one cop in the city, here with a cop on the street every 100m they don't care. There are entries to the main river where you can't even use a motor boat because there is so much plastic it clogs the prop within a few meters. The sewer goes straight into the river so all the filth from the streets flows straight into the river the moment it rains

Fabulous.. to find him here still working… he was goal is to clean the 1,000 top.. most polluting rivers around the world.. by 2025.. aim is… and has been to ‘rid the oceans of plastics..’ which means prevent more plastics from reaching ocean
These 1,000 rivers contribute 80% of the plastics into the oceans..
Wow.. as many comments say this young man deserves the Nobel Prize..

There is but people think its inhumane, just think Thanos was the good guy in the movie avengers. He saved man kind by removing some. If we made a system where people had to be responsible for the kids they had, an those kids were brought up in loving homes with intellectual people that cared for the world and all man kind those kids wouldn't make garbage let alone dump it in where they get fresh water to drink, bathe or swim in let alone eat the fish from and they wouldn't do all the other horrible things that are being done around the planet. We are at a age in existence that should be more aware about bringing in more life to the planet than it can hold carry or feed or take the abuse of their resources usage. I have kids I understand the appeal of having kids but my sons all contribute to fixing the problems not wasting or using more then needed and in keeping a natural habitat natural for all life not just people it is a full time job to raise people to be that way its not being done enough and definitely not on a global scale as needbe. I really wish people would wake up and worry less about how much money they are going to make and more about how we are going to repair the damages that have been done and how not to repeat the pattern before us. covid was a start where we go from here, that depends on the survivors.

Timothy Flores thus the reason it was dumped in the ocean to begin with...the madness to think that this would not come back to be a problem.

yes.. collecting big pieces before they fracture into small and extra small pieces and kill fish .. turtles.. birds..
limiting one use plastics is helpful..i had lunch at panera's .. salad came in a pressed paper bowl.... paper a. recycles...b. is biodegradeable
Panera recycles plastic knives.. forksm. spoons..all the plastics
that said... recycling is a major failure...bales are piling up at pac rim processing yards...
boyan slat figured out that most plastic enters the ocean via rivers.. his scooper boat proto is doun a massive job recovering tons of debris.. hopefully more like it to follow
we will strangle world wide if we don't stop non degradeable plastic waste in land sea air..yes plastic is now aerosol... meaning you'll be breathing it soon

This is really cool. Finally people are making practical solutions to problems like ocean garbage/pollution. Now if only there was a way to do something similar for ocean acidification.
