Boyan Slat's story is not quite that of a 20-year-old Wunderkind who magically found a potential fix to a longstanding problem. It's perhaps more accurately described as a combination of personal dedication and trial and error. When going through his old prototypes for a technology that would passively scrub oceans of plastic, he's almost embarrassed of his early concepts.
"But that's what science is really," Slat said. "It's a work in progress."
The crowdfunding campaign behind Slat's Ocean Cleanup Project was announced with strong bidding, no matter: "With two million dollars we can make a theoretical concept come true." With just two days left in his campaign, Slat successfully collected the funding for his project, bringing him one step closer to realizing a vision of plastic-free oceans.

i had a idea of a fleet of modified Kelp harvesters, skimming 8 feet below and bringing all it can grab up and out of the water, but this idea from 15 years ago, didn't get any one interested or funding, but it's good to see the 'Solar-Powered Water Wheel Cleans Baltimore Harbor ' actually working and cleaning the water.

@Frank Spencer Easier said than done, buddy.
What would you do to solve the source of the problem and not the consequences? Like they say “be the change you want to see in the world” ... So, are you willing to stop using petroleum based products then? No more car, no more gasoline, no more petroleum based platics.. You wouldn’t be able to comment on this video without being a hypocrite.. You’d be living like our prehistoric ancestors did...
So again, let’s try solving the source of the problem.. How? One way would be by limiting and controlling means of
production and consumerism of petroleum based products, which would be enforced by dictators. would you like to be dictated?
The only other option I could think of would be making plastics bio degradable and not petroleum based, but so far every other potential replacement for our modern plastics are far to expensive.
That case of water bottles for $1.50-3.00 would be more like $11.00... fuck that i aint paying $11 for a case of water bottles, or have to pay an extra 70% to buy a car with biodegradable plastics i’ll need to replace in 5 years anyways... get it bro?

Problem isn't using plastic. The problem is responsible disposal of plastic. Just put your trash in a large plastic bag and tie it up. Then dump it in a landfill. Usually wind isn't strong enough to blow it into rivers so problem solved. Now you just need to convince Asia.

If you've watched Vice's "Garbage Island" you'd know that most of the plastic floating in the Ocean, i.e. North Pacific Gyre, it's not large, single handheld pieces of plastic out there. Most of the plastic is tiny, micro pieces of plastic that suffocate fishes and stuffs seagulls stomach.

The discussion should be... Around 1980 plastic began to replace glass on store shelves. Plastic was cheaper and dramatically cut shipping costs. Glass is inert and doesn't impact the environment like plastic does. This looming crisis is just beginning. The only solution is to go back to glass or biodegradable and the large corporations are not about to do this. This is why this story does not come up on cable news or commercial TV. Where is public broadcasting? I guess they have been bought off too.

I have a shipping company that transports ewaste from the west coast to asia. We were having a problem where the disposal cost of the ewaste cut about 1.3% off our net profit (we make $98.70 profit per ton instead of $100.00; we charge to get rid of it). So now that they have a way to clean it up we can just dump the trash into the ocean and keep that extra dollar in profit use half the fuel and it will be cleaned up! Best part is we can get a contract to dispose of the waste his company will collect and we can dump it back creating more revenue less the toxic metals that sink or dissolve into the water..

the barriers are not placed in high traffic zones, and they will be labeled on charts where you can adjust you're course thousands of miles in advance. every ship traveling internationally needs to have charts aboard their vessel. its also why ships don't hit shoals and buoys. plus im pretty sure those things will have lights all over it as is required by international law by a "vessel" at sea

Everyday I find it harder not to take advantage of all the stupid people who believe like this.
I'm just too nice to take other money for my own wet dreams. This will never work to any extent as envisioned to make it worth it.
And the endless number of things that will go wrong.
Ships run over the trap instead of going around the hundreds of kilometers of surface area that these will will take up.
Do you think most captains care more about this trap than the cost for fuel, time, labour, lost business?
One submarine that catchs a line and drag the whole thing. The storms will rip apart.
The weight of living things will drag it down. The amount of sunlight hitting it will degrade the plastic curtain.
But...please keep trying. I love working hard to waste money on things like this. This also helps simple people from giving up hope that the planet can be cleaned up with out extensive time, labour and $$$$$$$$. Maybe we can just wish away the plastic or rely upon smugness....There is just as much chance for these as for the plastic trap.

This is cute for simpletons. Do you know whats better than a usless trap? Land mass... the oceans and seas are full of large pieces of land. And you know what land does in water? It collects plastics , bodies, boats, etc. Something like the Hawaiian Islands. This is very good at collecting stuff. It's just that people...like you...are too lazy to collect it off of the shoreline..

In some old documentaries of BBC or other wildlife channels there show that Tiger shark's and Marco's have can's and even number plates in there stomach. They said that this shark are so aggressive to eat everything and even use such things to explain the travel routes of those sharks. Totally a wrong way of education.
