Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

It's truly something important, not just to me personally, but to the survival of our species and to hundreds if not thousands of other species. It's not a toilet, it's not a dump, it has the potential to sustainably feed our entire population if handled properly. It has the potential to power our city's and homes with free, clean electricity and not to mention, the most fun I ever have is playing in the water, surfing, kayaking, boats, swimming and fishing. I just love the water.
Do anybody here understand that ONLY to reach that plastic patch and return to port this AHTS ship burned minimum 100 tons of diesel??
@@Je1e1 on the grand scheme of things, the longevity of the planet. That is not a massive price to pay, consider this. That amount of fuel is burned 100x over from ships crossing the oceans. If just one of those ships does something that will make a huge difference then it's totally worth it! This plastic is destroying the ocean and devastating so many species. I fail to see your point to be honest. Don't burn fuel to save the planet?

Thank you seems so small. I've watched you and your teams for over 10 years now. A couple of years ago I witnessed a police officer pulling over a man for throwing a handful of plastic trash out his car window! I am so glad to see more and more people start to care. This was in California. Thank you for being on the frontlines of this massive issue! God bless you all!
Humanity really need some positivity, success stories of can-do environmental activism
As long as that environmental activism focuses on actively doing something other than pointing fingers and screaming that other people need to "do something". A good start would be policing your own to get rid of the loudmouth activists that don't do anything other than scream and make a scene. Ruins the credibility of people (Ocean Cleanup) that are actually accomplishing something.
@@johnshilling2221 true, but many people I've spoken to say that they'll only make changes and do something if their government makes it a law. These people understand there's a problem, but aren't willing to do something unless someone from above makes them do it. My hunch is that the majority is like this. In that case, doesn't it make sense for activist groups to lobby/pressurise governments to do something?

@@azurbleu4335 Have you heard of the Interceptors? That's exactly what they're doing. Also, the boat is just for collecting the plastic out of the free-floating, carbon-neutral system. Have you looked at their website? Do you know anything about the project?

Growing year after year / In 2018, world plastics production totaled around 359 million metric tons. Wish the little boat & its crew good luck
Just to think it took a 15 year old young man, Boyan , to start this, and in short 5 years or so, accomplished something extraordinary. Now, if we just could Stopp People’s from throwing Trash into Rivers and Oceans. Thank you, the future looks a bit brighter because of you and your team! Respect...... I’m doing my part, Recycling as much as I can.

The trash can get washed from the land, during a flood, people don't have to directly throw the waste into a river or ocean to pollute it.
That'd be like a janitor trying to stop people from pissing on toilet seats. There will always be people that just absolutely do not care and will do whatever they want.

Every Nation in the world could supply one vessel at no cost to assist these people in their research and cleanup activities. I wouldn't cost that much but would be a great help to bring the oceans back to their full clean and pristine condition condition. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK The Ocean Cleanup!
While we would appreciate all the help, that would make for a lot of boats - and quite a carbon footprint! This is why we have designed our ocean system to work autonomously, using the natural currents of the ocean to capture and retain plastic. Can't wait to experience (almost entirely) plastic free waters in our lifetime! I'll do my best to remove as many kilograms as possible, whenever I'm near the ocean. Almost 400kg removed on land, so far 🐢🐳🐬🐠🦀 Let's make this happen!

Great job! Its a small batch of plastic for the oceans today, but a huge leap for the oceans of tomorrow!
Indeed, we were happy that we were able to collect 60 1m3 bags of plastic. Importantly, now that we have completed Mission One, we will compile our learnings and begin the process of designing System 002. This will indeed bring us further to that huge leap for our oceans!
You guys are genius. It's really inspired how passionate about the project the founder is. We need more people like you in every field. I'm trying to be as passionate as yourself in my own career field.
