    --
Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

Ok so I got an idea hear me out then if you like let me know you're thoughts.
So as you do this you should consider some small pipes that go down in the water to add o2.
Why 1 if you place them 4 to 6 feet from the Bottom and its 2 acers by 2 acers.
Why well 2nd is it will help move micro plastics up to surface and if its 2 by 2 acers any plastic bags might get enough air to float to the top for you to grab.
3 a good side effect is the added o2 will increase o2 in water as well cool and that means more fish can breathe more Plankton = more small fish to feed of them then more big fish to eat them.
4 since this should increase wild life you can now study them easier and get better readings.

Would be cool if cargo ships could pick up plastic as the travel back and forth. Not sure how but I can imagine them dragging a net or something like that... would be nice if big businesses like that cared about more than money and would make clean up a part of their business model. We have been kicking the can down the road for too long. What really needs to happen is recycled plastics needs to be less expensive than new plastic so companies will value them and start buying the plastic like they do scrap metal, then the poor will pick up everything to trade it in for cash, everyone would start cleaning up then.

    • @VFPn96kQT
      @VFPn96kQT 2 года назад +1

@@infiniteadam7352 The problem with using net is that they will catch wild life too. You don't want that. More biodegradable plastic would be great of course. Just dump that to compost and and bacterias will take care of the rest.

I've followed the work of the cleanup since Boyan's original TED talk, and I want to congratulate this team on this magnificent achievement.
It's got to be a little disappointing that the solution you converged on was to drag an enormous net behind a pair of boats. All of the effort to keep the cost down by using the forces of nature to your advantage, all the really tremendous ideas and years of work reduced down to that very simple concept. If only you could have skipped over those blind alleys! But that's not how new technology is developed.
Anyway, all this is to say, congratulations on this milestone. All of my fingers and toes are crossed that it works out.

This should be a good lesson in the folly of trying to engineer with the only principle being a drive to reduce costs. @Its me or whatever Yeah, it's like the sunglasses Ocean Cleanup made with the recycled plastic. They clarified that it's not their plan to turn literally all the plastic trash into new products, the sunglasses was just a design made with the plastic that could be ground down into usable bits. 5% of millions of tons is still quite a bit, though, and I think they should do more collabs with brands, especially something that could put them on store shelves, like a Lego set. Lego could totally make it so that their one main water themed set was by "Ocean Clean Up." Made of the same blue recycled plastic material as the sunglasses, limited edition, etc. They could even make a mode of the boat! Add water animals! etc.
Obviously it would take a lot more work than the sunglasses collab but it would be cool. Imagine the set comes with a bunch of info about Ocean Clean Up and recycling, etc. The material then makes it into every home with people who purchased the set or got gifted it! It also explains the solar panels, etc. Get kids interested in this stuff too. There can also be a QR code with each set that takes you to the website, like with the sunglasses. Some way to donate too.
But I definitely agree, and it would only be worth it if the info with the set made it clear that this is just a fun Collab and not how they plan on getting rid of all the plastic.

We used 'doors' to keep the net upon, floats on the head rope to keep the mouth up and chains on the footrope to keep it open downwards. Very simple. I also built nets so design plays a big part. This type of net can be used a the surface of any depth needed. Great idea. Too bad they didn't try this first.

Considering the low speeds involved, solar and wind power would be useful for this harvest. It would make sense to recruit yacht owners who care about the ocean to pull these systems (properly scaled) for whatever period of time as a public service, and to feel that they are doing their part. Two weeks towing a collection system with another yacht for example. It would give the yachties "bragging rights", and though the direct impact might be small, the publicity would be huge, and would help grow support. It could also grow a subscription model....... A promotion that could at the same time help encourage people to transition to electric propulsion through programs like Patreon. The indirect benefits could be quite significant. It could involve the little guy, not just the deep pockets billionaire. Imagine a yacht owner flying a plastics cleanup burgee the color of which represented how many tons he had accounted for! We have signs along our highways naming the family, company, club, etc... who cleans up that stretch of highway. Bring the little people in... provide the tracking, etc so they can do it..... Let them brag about their service. Harness human nature.

11/12/21 Thank you , thank you, thank you!!!!!!.......We may even be able to save ourselves. I waited for this since 1970, when I was a college student and began on my own to remove trash from local waterways, our streets, and places out in the country, in my home town. Think globally and act locally. I knew it seemed futile to attempt to help, but doing nothing was wrong.

Thank you for such a detailed presentation, I am starting a recycling operation in the colombian caribean coast and am looking for references that hace experience in this kind of operations. Hoping that in 2 to 3 years could be part of your recycling system and integrate it into the indigeous new culture for the second milenia. I will be based at Guajira, department of Colombia right at the tip of South America and at San Andres archipelago near the nicaraguan coast, but this second unit could be deployed at any of the islands in the Caribean Sea as a binational venture.

Loving all the progress you are making! I wonder if you could cut down on fuel by reconfiguring the turbines companies like e.on use off-coast to generate electricity from the tides? Modifying some of those to produce electricity from the currents and then using that to power the boats might be possible.

There's a boat called the energy observer that runs on hydrogen and makes it from the sea water which also has solar onboard. A boat with a system like that which doesn't need refueling would cut costs in the long run.

First of all: Great initiative! Thank you so much for your work! I don't understand though - in terms of efficiency, why don't you focus on filtering the rivers that cause the problem? The plastic problem needs to be addressed at the source: mainly asian rivers! There is drag and a high density of plastics, right? I guess ship traffic might cause problems to such a system... but I'm keen to hear your thoughts.

I'm a long-time follower and fan of what you are doing. It gives me hope. However, I feel like you are trying to solve the world's problem. You shouldn't have to fund that yourselves. I'm not sure where your funding sources come from, but I hope the UN is involved with full support. The river cleanup efforts you mentioned are a hopeful way to change our future impact while also working to reverse the existing damage. I hope you are getting all the resources you need, because this initiative is imperative and I'm grateful for people like you who are determined to take on the challenge.

Thank you so much for this needed update. I have been keeping tabs on your status since your beginning. I have not seen or heard from you (The Ocean Cleanup) in 8 or 10 months!
I believe you said that Jenny is capable of cleaning a football field of ocean recyclables. One question I have now is how long does it take Jenny to clean a football field of ocean recyclables?
Additionally, I really like the fact that you have chosen to use biodiesel from waste products. I am not a big fan of bio fuels especially if wood is used which is more common.
Thank you for choosing waste products as a fuel source.
Many good points were made in this video. I look forward to hearing back from you on my question and seeing and hearing more about current Ocean Cleanup action soon. Thank you..

A superb example of joind-up holistic system thinking. You deserve UN and govenment funding! How will the virtuous circle connecting recovery to recycling be realised? That is the next challenge for global governance.
