Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

It's good that the sea life is being taken into account, and I think it's important to realize for people who might be more upset about it that by cleaning up this plastic many more animals will be saved and healthier in the long run than will be accidentally injured or killed.
That's just not true. Plastic isn't harmful for animals. No more than sand is. Nets, on the other hand? Super dangerous for animals.

I wonder how much life is killed in the cleaning of this plastic.
Also lots of life live around plastic for some reason.
Also before plastic we use gords with bees wax inside for a water bottle or we used glass or animal insides.

@Rob Phillips It doesn't seem very inspiring to me. How much does it cost to run 2 big ships like that? How much does it cost to extract 1 tonne of plastic from the ocean in this way?
How do they expect to transport the plastic from this net that's in the middle of the ocean, to harbor?
More importantly, what do they expect to do with this plastic once its been collected? This question is even more changeling for the 'river interceptors' which are located in 3rd world countries with no infrastructure to handle waste, hence the plastic is dumped in the river in the first place.
They have not given good answers to this vital question. According to their websites FAQ;
"We want to give the plastic collected from the ocean a new life. Our plan is to work with partners to recycle the plastic and transform it into durable plastic products. By recycling the collected ocean plastic into useful products that are made with certified plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, we aim to make the cleanup operational costs, to a large extent, financially self-sustainable."
This this pipedream idea of recycling collected plastic is not feasible. It's already incredibly uneconomical to collect plastic from the ocean due to the low quantity of plastic per ocean water filtered through. You then need to transport that plastic all the way to a port, then it must be sorted and processed before it's even begun to be recycled.
We can't even recycle plastic using the highly organized and centralized source in the form of garbage collection system. The fact that the Ocean Cleanup company believes recycling is at all doable in the near or midterm future does not make them seem credible.
The same issue is seen with their 'river interceptors'. Though these are a far more sensible way of collecting the plastic (more density of plastic in the water, not as harsh operating conditions, far easier to access maintenance), they still have the issue of dealing with the collected waste. The floating debris in rivers is not just plastic, its a mixture of plastic, and dead biological matter like twigs etc.
In order for the plastic collected by an interceptor, it must be sorted out from the biological material, and then transported to a facility for further sorting and recycling.
These facilities are not going to be close to the interceptors. This means you are going to have a very hard to time transporting this waste material, much like ocean based system.
Not only do they think recycling collected river and ocean debris is at all practical, but they think it could even be economical.

Once again, recycling using plastic from waste collection is not economical, and it has none of the collection and transportation challenges that the Ocean Cleanup faces. This is nonsensical.
I think a much more practical and honest solution to dealing with the waste material collected, is to incinerate it. Even a dirty incineration system would prevent the plastic from strangling a seal or trapping a fish in bottle.
And of course, even with all of this practical issues addressed, we still have the problem of economics. Besides people donating to them charitably, and corporations funding them so they fulfill their ESG requirements, I can't see how they are going to get enough money to do this on a meaningful scale.

No one knows the entire solution to every downstream problem at the beginning. That’s what makes this inspiring: the fortitude to keep going and solve an incredibly important and challenging problem, even (and especially) amidst criticism.
@@iwasrobbed It's all well and good saying that, but they still havent addressed the great issue of what they will do with the waste they collect.
The fact that they are claiming to recycle it seems to show that they have no idea what to do with it. If they were honest they would tell us of this predicament, and more importantly focus the majority of their efforts in finding a practical solution to the problem, e.g. burning it.

and then to imagine there were quite a few scientists, oceanographers, biologists, etc. against this undertaking. Props to how far you've come and a great destination that seems within reach.

This is by far one of my favorite projects happening on this planet and I’m happy to see the progress moving forward.
I know you mentioned that you are compensating for the amount of emissions the vessels emit (which is a lot, those vessels consume a heavy amount of fuel), but HOW are you compensating? Additionally, I’ve noticed that you ship your containers of plastic debris from North America back to Europe. How does that work into your efficiency models for the company moving forward? Perhaps establishing recycling depots and working with local communities to do the same would be money better spent if you intend on removing more debris in the future?
Working with the fishing industry and creating nets and systems to expand in size is a great idea, and personally being part of large scale cleanups myself, I’ve noticed that the fishing industry is a huge part of the plastic problem in our oceans. However those polypropylene lines you’re working with to create the next best system, do breakdown and fragment micro plastics over time in the sun (essentially adding to the plastic problem, much more if you intend to implement these systems large scale). Are there materials you can utilize that wouldn’t be shedding these micro plastics over time? And if the intentions are to replace the systems as they get older, what do you do with a discarded 2km long net?

Doesn't matter, CO2 is not a pollutant, the whole climate thing is a communist scam. What they're doing is addressing real pollution, which should not be stopped by concerns for fake pollution.

I just love your mission. In the video the gentleman states that 10 of these system 003's could clean the entire pacific patch. Would be interesting to know over what period of time this could potentially take. Would be awesome if we were able to clean it up and then focus more on the rivers as the source. Also, how do you keep ships from running into these large net systems?
They are actually doing a lot on the rivers now. The videos of the interceptors they are using on rivers are fantastic. I'm obsessed with The Ocean Cleanup
I would suggest the other way round - focus on the rivers and then deal with the ocean after…55 tonnes is nothing compared with what could be done with the worst rivers. But the Ocean is sort of the figurehead of this project…it’s in the name right!
They, and other organizations are already working on catching garbage in rivers.
To mention or add to the river comment is there live cams. They may help bring awareness and funding.
@@mmchrisp I used to think likewise. However I’ve come to realize that both should be undertaken at the same time. The huge benefit of tackling the ocean side of the problem is its ability to gather public interest (hence funding) because of the obvious sharing of the oceans between countries. Whereas the issue of the great polluting rivers is often dismissed it as a scandalous but *local* issue under the responsibility of one specific country.
I am so thankful for these human beings working to realise this vision. There is an incredibly amount of expertise needed to be able to actually make all this come true. This is mind-blowing an heart-warming🙏❤

It’s great to see you guys really address the bycatch issue head-on, I see a lot of videos and comments suggesting the project shouldn’t happen simply because of bycatch. To me it’s an absurd conclusion but hopefully this video can put some of those folks at ease :)

Why cant people be happy for once that someone is finally fixing a big problem that our ancestors created, why not question where the pllastic goes, and how they prevent it from going back?
There's a small group of people - many of whom have a professional interest in seeing ocean plastic as an insoluble problem - who want to see TOC fail. They try to attack the project by imposing fake criteria. For example they complain if the project has even a minimal impact on wildlife, uses fuel, takes government money, or takes private money from the "wrong" sources. For years, they ranted about how TOC was distracting from the "real problem," of river waste. Then TOC announced the Interceptor project to catch river waste. At that point, did they express any gratitude or support? No way.

I never understand why people keep on thinking the only way to help is to join this project. Why not go outside and pick up plastics on the streets, canals, rivers etc? Like me and millions are doing.

@@BalboaBaggins I do that with my family every single time we are out on the river after we anchor the boat and enjoy the river. We clean up our garbage and walk 500 yards in both directions of the beach and fill up 2 garbage bags.

Use all the right words : carbon neutral for the diesel engined trawler or is it electric, not a permitted question? How does plastic get caught in the wide net? not a permitted question . how is a dolphin freed from entanglement, or even discovered there, not permitted questions. How much diesel being used, well, you guessed it. Can a neutral observer be allowed to film independently, but of course after signing a no disclosure agreement, the profits? negotiable . The sponsor?

I remember the small beginnings this company had. And to now see the aspirations of System 03.. amazing growth. I remember hearing the skepticism of "skimming the plastics out of the ocean" . . i was a bit skeptical too. It seemed too simple, now i know it's anything BUT simple. The premise is just simple, application is a massive undertaking.
Absolutely. 27 years at sea and done alot of things. Fishing and towboat mostly. The oceans and rivers present variables most have no idea about. They are living breathing things, awesome to watch these guys do this in real time.

Can’t wait to see how it performs. Great to see you guys partnering with industry. I think you might prove out a model of cooperation that can be replicated to solve a huge host of problems in a nimble way.
It is great to see that "The Ocean Cleanup" taps into the knowledge of fisherman and companies making nets, to help solve their problems, with solving "our problem".
I believe a next step could be to acquire knowledge of "real recycling", where we make new plastic from recycled plastic.
Right now, we mix and melt plastics into b-quality plastic products, that are not like the plastics being made new.
I believe the plastic industry can make new plastic out of recycled materials, a bit like companies as "loop industries" currently do for PET plastics.
Even if the management of most of these companies strongly believe making new plastics from oil is the way to go, their staff may very well know better.
An often heard "reason" is the so-called impurity of recycled plastic, where people seem to forget how many heavy metals and poisonous elements need to be extracted from crude oil.
It may not be the primary goal for "The Ocean Cleanup" to do this, but they can, and already have, influenced companies in the past.
Maybe their momentum will help to pull more knowledgeable people to think about how we can really recycle.
If done right, it could give value to plastic waste, that could perhaps finance "The Ocean Cleanup" but could also give a source of income to people in the Third World that live in plastic polluted areas.
So glad to see that the bright people in this world have developed a method to clean up all the plastic pollution humans have dumped into the Pacific ! Bravo ?

System 03/B: getting 3 layers in order to catch even smaller particles while easing pressure
System 03/C: developing a sound-like system that would make living things go away which will contribute to speed
System 04: all combined with a possible additional vessel

When I was 16 years old some 55 years ago, I was a galleyboy on board various cargo and oil tanker ships operating out of the UK and I saw some fantastic and wonderful things at sea. During long trips where we didn't see land for weeks it was the normal practice to empty bins over the side into the sea. Everything that was in those bins went over the side no matter what it was. There was no where else for it to go. So, to my shame, I have been a part of the problem now facing the oceans. I wish I could go back in time and take out the crap I had dumped in the sea but now my health wouldn't take it. I know it doesn't mean much now but I apologise to the future generations for my ignorance and lack of thought. But we really didn't know any better.

Would be interested to see if the collection vessel for System 03 could filter out wildlife via some kind of sorting deck at the end of the neck.
