This is a noble attempt, and I truly have huge respect and admiration for this young man’s passion to save our oceans. However, the design engineer in me, thinks there is a better way. It would be more complex at first to build, but it would work with a high degree of efficiency. So if anyone is reading this comment and wants to go off and patent what I’m about to say, Godspeed you can have it. 😊🙏🏼
You would have to get with a Technology University with a strong curriculum for machine learning, robotics, and AI. Here’s why.
Design a fleet of water drone vehicle that are electrically powered with similar high capacity lithium ion batteries like the new Hummer EV truck. Or even the power train and battery pack of the new Tesla Semi freight truck. The design of this drone would be a series of solar panels across the entire upper span of the body of the water drone, but but the underbelly hull of the water drone is where all the magic happens. At the underbelly hull, will be a series of cameras capable of not just regular optics, but thermal infrared lenses, able to see underwater based on heat and temperature signatures. Just as Tesla’s autopilot system, this water drone will have something similar, where it will be able to AI navigate itself, learn its surroundings, and be able to most importantly? Distinguish between biological life (fish, underwater vegetation, etc.) and foreign particles of plastic. The underwater vehicle will have a schedule. Stay stationary floating during the daytime, as the solar panels for 12 hours a day collect energy for the batteries, so work begins AT NIGHT. As night falls, the water drones begin a pre-set route an operator programmed to them, as they take this route and begin to collect all foreign plastic particles they are sensing via thermal and optical lenses. There will be two robotic arms extended from the hull that can reach out and grapple the plastic item, maneuvering it to a netting containment region in the middle of the underbelly of the hull. Through additional sensors, the capacity of the netting containment area is monitored via AI, until it’s sensed the netting containment unit has been fully filled. A larger boat in the area acts as the transfer boat for all water drones around the area. The water drone simply comes back to the “mother ship” where a human crew will retrieve the filled up cargo netting, and either immediately replacing it with an empty one, or dumping the filled one immediately into a larger container on the boat, and then re-placing the cargo netting back at the under belly of the drone, so it can be redeployed.
The “mother ship” will also perform all routine maintenance of the water drones in the area. Another alternate to this operational variant, is if the AI becomes too difficult for a computer to determine what is plastics and what isn’t, just like the military has drone pilots operating drones at a command center remotely, so too can these water drones be human piloted, where the human has a live video feed and joystick, literally controlling the navigation of the water drone and its robotic grappling arms, in real time. The communications is not happening via strong satellite or radio frequencies, but more close range radio frequencies being transmitted by the mother ship where the water drone pilots are, controlling the drones within a 1 mile radius of the mother ship at all times. If the drone needs extra charging for the batteries, it can also head back to the mother ship, where on board power could also come from even more ship mounted solar panels, to store energy on ship installed battery arrays. But the point of my idea is let the drones do all the work nightly, and just have a human crew supervising them.

Back in the mid 1980s I ran a polyethylene recycling operation in Sydney, Australia. It was not for garbage but rather at the very beginning of the cycle - at the commercial extrusion end, from pellets to film for bags. Everyday, we recycled film from start-up and size changes back into pellet feedstock - 1000Kgs per day. The dirtier the waste, the more ineffectual was the re-cycling. In my professional opinion, it is actually better to "fix" this dirty plastic into roads and buildings or other non-critical/non-structural components than to turn it back into film for bags!!!

Awesome work mate. I've seen in some of the third world countries who struggle to survive and have no garbage disposal systems in villages where the rubbish ends up in the rivers where they bath and use water as no where else to get. To help with clean up of oceans these rivers need to be cleaned otherwise ocean will continuously fill back up with rubbish/plastics. If I had billions of dollars i would help as much as I could. Sadly struggling myself but I never drop rubbish anywhere but bins. Countries needs to combine and pick up their act so this planet survives, not fight and invade land. There won't be anything left worth fighting each other for, that will be the day countries try and do something but it will be too late.

Amazing initiative. We should try to have initiative to stop the plastic flowing into ocean and rivers. Another one to correctly gather plastic and recycle.

The first two systems are essentially proof of concept, and as such they are successful... it is always to be expected that at the beginning of an engineering project, (or most other types of project as well) there are going to be significant things that don't work. It is an opportunity to learn. Look how many rockets blew up on the launch pad in the 1970s. Now we are going back to the moon.

This guy's motive and dream is a hundred times better than elon's in my opinion. Instead of going out in a world with so many uncertainties, why dont we first make our world a livable place.

Very encouraging project. Also need to find out the channels the garbages are coming from. Countries contributing the most have to take responsibility to improve their swerage system, educate their country men.
