    This guy is currently my hero. I mean this in the biggest way possible. The multi-million dollar corporations that produce all this plastic have a moral obligation to help finance his project. I wonder if they're even lifting a finger to help. I'd like to contribute financially. As a consumer of plastic products, that is the least I can do.

    42:49 - He says, "I think that many people see innovation as a way to get rich. Not so much as a way to make the world a better place or enrich humanity." When people make that evolution, from one motivation to the other, we'll be fit to enter the universe. Not before.

      For instance...what to do with the plastic once retrieved? Why not find a way to do what we know SHOULD be done with it--safely break it back down to its parts...save what is good...destroy safely or isolate those chemicals/substances that should never have been used because they are dangerous to life on the planet...use what can be safely used for fuel...find ways to use it to make materials for construction or manufacturing that will NOT add polution to the environment, will NOT break down into micropolutants...etcetcetc. And that was just off the top of the head. Imagine what Silicon Valley could do if it wanted to. They have probably already received 1000s if not millions of suggestions. But as stated, the profit motive puts the kibosh on most of them.

It must be a daunting task to oversee the whole of operations (including the new office headquarters) but you seem to take it in stride, Boyan. Exploring by prototype is a big risk but we all learn from failure as well as triumph. I think you will have a bit of both in this wonderful undertaking of yours. Taking plastic out of the ocean AND saving wildlife is an important thing that you are doing. I’m sure you’ve got the support you need from your staff and I wish you good luck and Godspeed. Every step in the direction towards a solution is a step in the right direction.
    This applies to all new innovation like renewable energy, clean air and water etc.
    Being critical because an idea isn't a silver bullet and a fix all in one shot is a massive problem today.
    Every new idea has hurdles but they are overcome only when someone starts

    With much of Asia becoming more industrialized, and countries wanting to pursue the path that the USA has followed since the 1950s, I'm afraid plastic pollution is going to get much worse. It's a nice idea that Boyan Slat has, but if we don't address the reason why so much plastic is being dumped into the ocean in the first place, his efforts will not be enough.

      Like Boyan Slat says in his TED talks, the plastic floating in the ocean is a ticking time bomb, because over time it is degrading into the incredibly harmful micro plastics which marine creatures can eat, be poisoned by and starve due to their stomachs being full. Cleaning up the oceans of plastics is essential even if plastics are not manufactured from tomorrow, and even if only biodegradable plastics are made in the future. Those things do not solve the problem of what is already out there and the accumulation of the current plastics that is occurring right now while we are waiting for a solution. We cannot wait any longer. We must clean NOW.

    My name is Mark C. Radosevich and I live n.e. of Durango, Colorado. I'm a 67 yr. old scientist and inventor of a biodegradable and extra profitable liquid fuel replacement for petroleum. This new higher mixed alcohol fuel is a synthetic blend of C1-C6 normal alcohols to include methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol and six carbon n-hexanol.
    This GTL (gas-to-liquids) synthesis technology [refinery chemistry set] has been in use for a hundred years in converting methane natural gas or solid coal into C1 methanol. My GTL system uses a totally different patented catalyst to produce six, eight or ten normal, synthetic alcohols instead of simply C1 methanol - and at 5x the efficiency of conversion which dovetails directly into its profitability. The first green herein are the profits which this fuel synthesis system will generate for its equity owners. The second green which drives me is its near-term benefits to Land, Water and Atmosphere.
    The U.S. EPA approved this new alcohol fuel for commercialization on September 20, 2001 -- just nine days after the Twin Towers crashed down on 9/11. This gas to liquids higher mixed alcohol technology began 45 years ago and still has not been commercialized. There exists a very large and definite controlling greed factor stymied by divisive patents to about one-half of the planet. I have been quietly working with this new and hidden fuel for the past 25 years.
    This new "Oxycarbon" mixed alcohol fuel contains just three atoms. Carbon, associated Hydrogen and new, missing Oxygen which is derived from H2O as hot steam. The chemical magic herein becomes the missing Oxygen atom which is not contained within Hydrocarbon [fossil oily] fuels of Nat/Gas, Crude OIL or solid Coal.
    This additional Oxygen atom does not contain any BTU's of combustion energy. Instead, it "fans the flames" to enable refined petroleum oils or ground coal or natural gas to combust far cleaner and provide more torque, fuel economy and a highly reduced emissions profile. The Oxygen atom also changes the polarity of the fuel molecule and instead of floating on water as ALL oils do (even edible oils) -- the new and stronger (less expensive) fuel alcohol is magnetically polarized to bind and dilute with water.
    This becomes the biodegradable aspect and the new alcohol fuel actually provides a free lunch to single celled [plant] phytoplankton & [animal] bacteria species and to all green living plants, trees, brush and grass. All of these living species consume the dilute alcohol fuel for lunch and pop off a water molecule. The chemistry is very simple, so simple that young children can interpret and understand it.
    Brown, urban smog is an Oil Spill in the Sky. Try interpreting smoggy air in this way.
    My next scale of development is a $50M tiny showcase demonstrating that society's solid waste garbage, sewer sludge, ground tires, beetle-killed pine, medical wastes and hazardous wastes become the source feedstock for Carbon & Hydrogen (instead of corn kernels) and such solid wastes are cleanly converted in a special Rotary Kiln Gasifier without a smokestack, thus no emissions. Imagine all of these nasty solid wastes being converted into a new, extra profitable, water soluble, oil soluble & coal soluble extra profitable biofuel without a smokestack, AND at negative cost per gallon as these solid waste feedstocks come with a tipping fee for disposal.
    Right behind the next $50M scale of demonstration will become commercial sizes of mixed alcohol refinery systems beginning in the $350M to $500M range which zero their capital debt in their first year of operations.
    The Oil Industry is more interested in converting their abundant sources of Methane natural gas and CO2 into this same new biofuel. Thus this GTL system has two front ends, one gaseous the other being solid wastes. The latter is the most profitable. Using Methane Nat/Gas and CO2 as feedstock will produce the new liquid biodegradable fuel for about 35¢ per gallon. Gasifying the solid wastes of society without emissions and collecting a tipping fee will produce the new liquid biofuel for approximately a negative -35¢ per gallon.

    Wouldn't it make more sense to catch the trash when it comes out of those few rivers that is the source of most of the trash in the oceans? Not only would it be easier -- smaller area to cover and the plastic would still be in larger pieces -- but it would prevent it from interacting with the oceans for years before gathering in the middle of the oceans.

    It's somehow saddening that all the selfishness of older generations and its disastrous outcomes are left up to two kids sacrifying their lives to reverse the sick system of the entire world. Seeing Boyan and Greta's desperate determination which actually makes a difference gives hope though. It's a lesson for everybody ,each of us can really safe the world.

This IS THE PROBLEM OF THE GLOBALIST companies who are producing the plastic - even they know it is a terrible pollutant - and even they know it reduces male fertility.....perhaps that is the reason they do so.

    Amazing next step is to use bioplastic materials.

  • @AYoung2084
    @AYoung2084 5 лет назад

    There is apparently technology available to turn waste plastics back into a liquid fuel, that could then be used to power the ships being used in the clean-up process. That might be more efficient than simply collecting the plastic to return it to the land somewhere, to be recycled in some way. In the longer run, getting humanity off this toxic oil and plastics economy would be much better for the biosphere of course. Wood, paper, metal and glass can do lots of useful jobs with less damage to the environment than plastic. Non-toxic biodegradable packaging substitutes (for plastic) based on things like fungus can also help.

      At least he is not flying around in a plane making empty promises. People are shallow, maybe it's a cheap way to impress something useful into their shallow minds? I'm sure I'm shallow too and too shallow to see it. But I love his flashy presentations, it excites me. If something looks exciting, people do it. That seems to be what most people care about. Maybe it's not about deep or shallow after all... just about exciting or boring. And if it's about that, it might as well be something good... doesn't that bode well for the world?!

    • @iMann_iFail

      Coenraad Loubser having a corporate jet makes travelling efficient, just means he has more time whilst travelling to work on his projects, to hold meetings whilst in the air and saves time from having to wait around and the best bit.. he doesn’t have to travel or be shoe horned into a packed plane.. plus the plane would be a giant advertising board.
      At the end of the day time is short lived.. if I could save time and not waste it waiting around, I would.

      @@iMann_iFail Sure. Personally, though, I believe that entrepreneurs who show potential, whom I meet in economy class, and get to spend a quality few random hours with, can do much more with a small grant, than plane manufacturers or big oil. I cherish the ability to just have a human conversation with someone who don't know me and expect nothing from me... every person counts, and can learn from each other. So, I won't judge. I call him "Human V3.0". I'm "Human V2.0" and happy to be, and I have deep respect and have learned some of my most valuable lessons from "Human V1.0" - many lessons that V2.0 and V3.0 could learn from, but probably won't... because of stuff like this.

    $31,000,000 raised, approximately 10,000 people worked directly and indirectly. How much of this money was wasted in administrative council with people who can do something in an hour but take a day. I doubt any of them have Boyan's drive and dedication to what the principle of operation at hand here. The world is in grave danger from what is being done to it. People need to ask how the plastic straw they used at Starbucks ended up in the ocean. It didn't just float down the river.

  • @625098evan
    @625098evan 3 года назад

    this is good, but there is some stuff to think about here. it took an Dutch entrepreneur who cares enough about our planet to go over to other countries, who are actually the problem, to catch trash before it get to the ocean. I think its rather likely that more trash will be thrown in the river now because people know this mechanism is there. the local government might be pleased than a primarily American funded project is effectively paying for this utility service for them. don't get me wrong, I'm glad this exists, but we also should be trying to fully understand the problem and where its coming from.

    • @pennyoflaherty1345

      True, only recently China stopped taking the Worlds trash making independent nations accountable for their own mess.
      Problem of one-use plastic is it’s Not Disposed of Thoughtfully! Adjacent to all plastics are cigarette butts ! Maybe on Isles like Indonesia where some of the worst trash enters the oceans, interchangeable bins of recycling would be a starter from the producers of plastic where this all begins the * PETROCHEMICAL PLANTS *

    • @625098evan
      @625098evan 2 года назад +1

      @@pennyoflaherty1345, some data that is publicly available shows that as people groups become more wealthy they start to care about their environmental effects more. it seems as though people are able to care more about external ethical matters when they don't need to be concerned about their own survival. improving the economy of some of the poorest countries would go a long way to having them create less mess. some of these countries need to be allowed to industrialize properly. they need to have the opportunity to develop. there is a way for more developed countries to coach and encourage without yelling at others about what they can can can't do.
