  • More than eight million tonnes of plastic is thrown away each year and washed out to sea.
    It takes centuries to break down. It's eaten by marine creatures. And it's in our food chain. Your seafood supper may have a synthetic garnish. Scientists just don't know what effects it has on our health.
    Sky Ocean Rescue is doing something about it.

    I wish more people cared. Ive started my zero waste journey and I have cut out all plastic except for 3 or 4 things of food packaging which i am working on cutting out too. People are just lazy and dont want to eat at home and make things from scratch. They like the convience of purchasing and disposing

    In the early 1980's we lived on an island in the med and were constantly asking the beach tourists to politely take their rubbish with them and not to leave it on the beach when they left, we were often met with swearing and threats of violence ! There is the problem, out of sight out of mind we don't care ignorance. I applaud the actions now being taken , but it was happening 40yrs ago so it is now some undertaking,

    I've been to India twice. They don't have rubbish disposal services: no rubbish bin (garbage can) collections, they have no land fill sites. They have no sewage system. Sadly most of their rubbish is disposed in the ocean. Sad but true. They have to address this.

    So they gather up all the plastic on the beach. Wonderful. But then what is done with it? It goes to the landfill which might be a long way from the beach. But then comes a flood which inundates the landfill and some of that plastic enters the waterway again and winds up on the beach yet again to be gathered up and taken back to the landfill. It all needs to be converted into some sort of construction material to build roads or buildings...free houses for the homeless!!!

    I live in Gwynedd and I go down to Barmouth beach and find lots of beer bottles and rubbish. I feel really good collecting just 10 items and put the in the recycle bin. A few years ago we had a Sunday with over 100 just cleaning the rubbish from the beach. It’s a great feeling. We all need to do are part. If we don’t the oceans will die.

    Paper and wax milk cartons might be a better way to go for selling servings of water, instead of plastic bottles. Many people now have their own water containers and no longer purchase water in disposable plastic bottles. Straws could go back to paper, too, like they were in the 50's and early 60's. There are now biodegradable disposable spoons and forks. Go back to paper shopping bags, or bring your own.

      I have 1 gallon bottles that I use to store water I get from a wonderful public running spring underground water. I have a reusable insulated water bottle . I use cleanable silicon straws..no overuse of paper products. We just have too much garbage..too many people is also the issue. Some of it is just common sense and being responsible.

    It is such an important issue and the view count is even more worrying, most people just do not care. I myself always do my bit, i recycle every little piece of plastic/cardboard and also combine every dog walk with a litter sweep in my area and the amount that i pick up is just criminal.

    Food packaging is most of the throw out stuff. We need to come up with a bio material that can be used for food safe packaging to prevent contamination and food storage once we get it home. there are waxed wraps sold in different sizes that are meant to be reusable, if washed properly. We have to slow down and get used to washing again on a larger scale. I don't know how much percentage is disposable diapers. (can't these be made of waxed paper and cotton somehow ?).

      @@angelajeanjones I do everyday. I shudder to think what my neighborhood and nearby woods would look like if I did not do it. When I first started one whole hillside by a local school was like looking at a blanket of bags, plastic bottles, tin cans, and other trash. I get to take my walk everyday and see green. One day the woods I keep clean had needles and a hazard box somebody left. Totally horrible next to a middle school. I took it out and got it properly disposed. People still do not pick up thier dog poo. That is another problem for some areas.I did not know there was a name for people who just wanted their neighborhoods to be clean.

    The UK has been using plastic long before India has, and yet indias beaches are covered in it. Plastic has its uses but if its not disposed of properly it is extremely dangerous for the environment. India do not have the infrastructure to deal with plastic waste, but still has the appetite for its convenience

Each generation should behave and act as the caretakers for the next generation.

    • @kenlee1416
      @kenlee1416 5 лет назад +1

      That is good but it is merely addressing the symptom of the problem. And the problem is ALL of us using these plastics. One main solution is to drastically cut back on our personal use of plastics - that includes (and not restricted to) totally stop buying any ''food and drink'' in plastic/semi-plastic packaging, eschewing the takeaway and convenience culture and restricting online purchases to essentials. Buy produce from farmers' markets as most/all chain supermarts now use excessive plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables.

    A mechanical rotary rake and sand shaker should make beach clean up much easier or less labor intensive, as well as some what more expensive, I suppose however, that the use of manual labor allows individuals to be more plastic-pollution conscious and progressively involves more and more members within a given locality, in one way or another.

    I have no problem in plastic manufacturing. I believe plastics at this point in time is essential to life. We just need to work on how to dispose of plastics....
