Recycling Ocean Plastic Into Plastic Granulate | Cleaning Oceans | The Ocean Cleanup

  • On this step of the Plastic Journey from trash to treasure, we have successfully recycled our plastic catch into granulate. This material will be used to make the first product from verified ocean plastic.
    One of the common questions we receive is: why do we transport and process the plastic in the Netherlands? The answer is that, despite our best efforts, we were unable to find a suitable recycling partner for the material’s unique properties in North America. Processing in Europe also allows us to work with our recycling partner to gather data that can help us recycle closer to the source point once we scale up.
    While we are currently looking to offset our activities where we can, the current catch was transported through established land and sea routes in order to have the least additional environmental impact as possible. As we scale, we are looking to improve this in the future.
    --
    Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
    The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

      We seal the plastic to ensure the chain of custody. This allows us to verify that the plastic is certified ocean plastic collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

      I think opposite. Everyone coming across this is ecstatic and grateful that SOMETHING is fixing this detrimental issue after so so long. But really, some environmental companies (though effective) is the treatment, not the prevention. There is a fundamental force that enables environmental damage. So I hope people don’t see this and think, “finally! The pain is over!” I hope so many people become inspired to make it a collaborative effort that unsustainable production ceases.
      So I agree with you but in a different way.

    Not to take away from the great work that those guys are doing of cleaning the ocean but I have to ask, how is this sustainable or economic? Isn't the first requirement for a business is to be profitable in order to continue operating?
    It seems like a lot of work hours are being spent on sorting the plastics out which make the process at a large scale of processing hundreds of tons of material a day would not be possible.
    Did you guys think about an easier way of recycling the material? Perhaps turning the material into energy?
    If you truly want to clean up the ocean you must be profitable or at least break even, otherwise you'll run out of resources.
    That being said I do wish you great success on your journey for the good of the planet and us all

    • @stinnna
      @stinnna 3 года назад +10

      Yes, I am too very curious what the long term sustainable plans are. What if not enough people will buy the recycled products? And do they have other reliable sources of money to continue their great work?

    • @itayedry1234
      @itayedry1234 3 года назад +8

      @@stinnna besides if people do buy the reclaimed plastic, that same material will be turned into products with the potential to end up in the ocean again.
      When you spill a cup of milk on the the table the last thing you need you need to do is clean the floor. In the case of plastic in the ocean you must have a better way to dispose of plastic then what we currently have which is burying it in the ground before we start cleaothe ocean. Simultaneously we should develop resins that decompose to replace petroleum based plastic

    • @MacDrai8
      @MacDrai8 3 года назад +29

      @@stinnna It does not have to be sustainable, the project just has to find other means to sustain their operational cost. They are not a proper business, aiming to make money but an entity trying to empty the garbage out of the ocean. They are exploring multiple avenues to generate revenues, one of them is a shop where you can buy products which have been truly created from recycled plastic. This is why they have an emphasis on the chain of custody and they seal every part of the process. To certify they truly recycled this plastic, they can prove that every part of the process can be audited and the chain is not broken. When you buy any product from them, it was literal garbage from the ocean patch and by buying this product you help them directly removing more with a positive feedback loop.
      Any excess plastic can be sold to wholesalers to be used with brand new plastic products.
      Moreover, I'm sure they are working with an agile delivery process in place, every iteration of the recycling will get better and solutions will be developed along the way to speed up the end results. We are witnessing the first go at it, the next one may take 1/3 of that, the next 1/8 less of the second ect and at the end the process might break even from the sale of recycled products.
      They have more avenues to raise money, one is institutional donations (governments, public sector companies, private companies, other charities ect). The other is private donations.
      Boyan Slat, the founder kickstarted his mission with Kickstarter too. We might see in the future another round of crowdfunding for specific end goals or territories. We could see a patch of a river with a brand new interceptor sponsored by 1000 people or an expedition to study the migration of plastic from most polluted rivers to the great patch sponsored by another group of people. If there's a potential market of people ready to pay for a concept, there is no reason that the ocean cleanup project cannot capitalise on it and make everyone happy.
      But the concept of a web store to sell recycled products is a tremendous idea and hopefully the public will love it and more and more projects can fruit to completion.

    I have to tell you that in front of major resort areas head phone wires are a big problem. I recently visited one of my vacation spots on the Ocean and the plastic for these headphones were all over the beach...the metal corrodes in the center yet the plastic survives. One small portion took me approximately 45 minutes to clear. Somehow we must contact hotels on the beaches to inform their guests to secure their wires so they won't fly off into the beach. (the Metals dissolve as this will cause the ocean to develop a metal toxicity in conjunction to the MICRO- plastic). Good Day!

I look forward to seeing the larger boom make it out to the great garbage patch and start collecting. They need to do this more often. That way we can have our rightful amount of shared goods. I can imagine stuff made from this recycled material going to places that have less stuff than other places. With that material, you can make a huge amount of items that would help in the abolishment of hunger and homelessness. It really shouldn’t be about making money, it should really be about fixing all of Earth’s problems regardless of any money being lost or gained.
    And once those problems are fixed, we can move forward further in our space travel developments. Get some colonies on the Moon and Mars. Build energy-efficient green rocket ships and space shuttles that can get us further on half the fuel needed. The Earth is green enough, but humans need to learn to be more green, more renewable. If we learn from our mistakes, we could live on Earth a lot longer.
    But eventually we will have to leave Earth and find other places to dwell in this big universe of ours. Money should not be the goal, fixing the problems of Earth and beyond should be.

      We do not currently collect LDPE with our ocean system, so this is not something we are exploring at this time.

    Why not chip it in the beginning and sort it based on material density?

    • @theoceancleanup
      @theoceancleanup  3 года назад +1

      In order to sort it, the plastic must first be detangled. While we are looking to optimize this process, currently this is the most accurate and efficient way to do so.

    • @theoceancleanup
      @theoceancleanup  3 года назад

      There is often little verification for recycled product claims. For this reason, by working with DNV GL we ensured that our sunglasses were made with certified ocean plastic according to the Ocean Plastic Standard. still no clip of plaswaste being channelized by the boom to the conveyor...
    Baltimore water wheel shows a clip of guides forwarding trash to the pickup point and a spinning rake lifting debris directly onto it's conveyor... why does o c not show their interceptor at the gathering and transfer ??????? not perfected ????

    • @ryanwright2235
      @ryanwright2235 3 года назад +1

      Their fight isn’t wholly against plastic. It’s against the disposable of the plastic and other garbage. If they take those bags and dispose of them improperly then and only then are they defeating their own purpose.

      @@theoceancleanup you're missing a word on that page in the paragraph:
      Step 1: Catch, secure, and track the plastic
      When we catch the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and bring it onto the vessel, we dry, bag, and weigh it before tagging it with GPS coordinates securing it with tamperproof seals. These steps are laid out in the standard created by DNV GL, and allow the plastic’s origin to be traced from the moment it leaves the. Traceability is maintained throughout the Plastic Journey by keeping detailed documents and evidence (taking photos and videos) and it allows us to verify that the plastic in your product actually does come from the ocean.
