  • On September 8, The Ocean Cleanup will launch the world’s first ocean cleanup system through the San Francisco Bay, toward the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/371k8sN
    Short before the launch, Founder and CEO Boyan Slat explains how we got there and the challenges lying ahead of System 001.
    --
    The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. This is why, at the Ocean Cleanup, we are developing passive systems that are estimated to remove 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years.
    After 273 scale model tests, six at-sea prototypes, a comprehensive mapping of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) with 30 vessels and an airplane, and several technology iterations, we launched the world’s first cleanup system from San Francisco on September 8, 2018. During its approximate four months offshore, many aspects of the technology were proven, but it was observed that the system was not effectively retaining plastic. While the team was testing solutions, a fatigue fracture caused an 18-meter section of the system to detach. The crew and the system safely returned to shore on January 17, 2019, thus concluding the first campaign of System 001.

    A risk not mentioned is the possibility of collision with a vessel. I don’t think I’d want my 30ft yacht ploughing into that at 8 knots on a dark and stormy night. Might end up as plastic waste, itself! Is it fitted with AIS?

    What do you plan to do with the garbage once you have collected it?
    A thermaldepolomizer could be used to convert the plastic back into oil for use as fuel and lubricants.
    Recycling the plastic might offset your operating costs.

    How quickly does it collect surface plastic and foam? With high winds most will be blown over the edge and skipped or you'll see trash on both sides for sure on these rigs.

    • @williamchamberlain2263
      @williamchamberlain2263 5 лет назад

      If it captures just 1% of the plastic it passes it'll eventually get it all - it's not like it takes lunch breaks or annual vacation.

  • @_aullik

    I really hope this works out but honestly I believe the chances that this first system fails are very high. However the real world data it will provide us with will allow you to build better systems in the future.

    • @BeingJohnMalkowitz
      @BeingJohnMalkowitz 5 лет назад +2

      True . The system could fail , yes , but the total project is a huge succes . At least somebody had the courage to do something and put the problem on the map , not being scared to fail . We have a start !

    • @_aullik
      @_aullik 5 лет назад

      As i said in the second part. If this system doesn't work then the data provided by this system will be more than enough to build a working system.
      I am super thankful for the work of those guys. cleaning up the oceans is one of the most important tasks of my generation.

      aullik Won’t matter if it fails because there is no “garbage patch” in the Pacific Ocean to begin with.

    • @_aullik
      @_aullik 5 лет назад +1

      depends on what you call a "garbage patch". There is most definitely no connected mass of plastic. That is obvious and everyone with more than 50iq should know that. However there is a concentration of plastic in this area and this is what is called the pacific garbage patch which is confirmed by many scientific sources.

  • @johnbollenbacher6715
    @johnbollenbacher6715 5 лет назад

    These guys are doing great work. However, I predict that they will end up adding some autonomous tugboats to keep the net where they want it. Such an addition should be a minimal investment considering what they’ve done so far.

  • @pillcosby2423

    I can't wait to see how the plastic is be removed for the water and then ultimately disposed of.
    If this first step is a success, the volume of waste will be so large that it will not be able to be hauled to shore. Ultimately a system like the Plasma Arc Waste Destruction System on-board the USS Gerald R. Ford will be required.

    • @saveourseas7
      @saveourseas7 5 лет назад

      Jack Patteeuw the plastic can, and should be used to manufacture clothing and other products. It’s a HUGE money maker. All countries should mandate recycling, or heavy fines, and offer it FREE OF CHARGE! It has to start on land my friends!

    • @jackpatteeuw9244
      @jackpatteeuw9244 5 лет назад +1

      Orney Oh - All plastics are not suitable to be spun into thread and cloth.

    • @saveourseas7
      @saveourseas7 5 лет назад

      Jack Patteeuw I know this. There are many uses that plastics can be reused though. I'm hopeful there'll eventually be technology to vacuum the ocean floor, which is where micro plastic settles. The toxins have entered our food chain, and also our drinking water. It's awful. #ReduceReuseRecycle

    • @jackpatteeuw9244
      @jackpatteeuw9244 5 лет назад

      Ornery Oh - Plastics that can be reused/recycled have to be separated from plastics that can not. On land, this is typically done by land. Completely impractical on the ocean.

    • @saveourseas7
      @saveourseas7 5 лет назад

      Jack Patteeuw I know this as well. I’m pretty sure Boyan plans to take the hauls of plastic to land, to be separated and reused.

    Wouldn't it be simpler to just go to where this plastic is entering the ocean and collect it there? Make a huge garbage boom that would surround the sources of the garbage and keep it from migrating any further, that way when the garbage starts to pile up on the beaches the governments involved would have to act to improve their infrastructure. I guess they would be able to tell the difference, but maybe not.
